Featured Guest: Allison Argo’s films have won over 100 awards internationally, including six national Emmys, DuPont Columbia, Genesis, Jackson Hole, NY, Banff, and dozens of awards from New Zealand to Japan. Argo is known for her emotionally-charged and deeply personal films – in particular her intimate portraits of endangered animals. The nearly two dozen award-winning films she’s produced, directed and written have all been broadcast by PBS and/or National Geographic and have reached audiences worldwide. The Last Pig continues Argo’s mission to provide “a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves”– and to deepen understanding and respect for all beings.

Tranquilosophy: Entertain

hosting copy

Week 38: Entertain

Light candles. Display flowers. Create a libation station of wine, tea, and water with mint sprigs. Set out finger-friendly hors d’oeuvres on silver platters with doilies. Dim the lights. Remove pet hair from everywhere.

This is my basic day-of entertaining checklist and what runs through my head continually before greeting the first guest.

Hosting an intimate dinner for two or a cocktail party for 20 doesn’t have to be a grand feat. Make the event a stress-free endeavor with mindful planning

Here are my 8 steps for ease-filled entertaining:

A Peek into Writing in the Woods

Picture yourself practicing yoga, sitting in meditation, consuming homemade vegetarian meals, and enjoying an assortment of desserts and treats, including kale chips and green juice. Oh, and roasting s’mores over a campfire under the stars.

This weekend a lovely group of ladies descended into the woods for an immersion in writing.

The programming included an abundance of writing tools, ways to structure a piece, how to find your writing voice, what goes into a powerful opening, and the path to publication.

At the end of our journey together, the ladies created a writing action plan to clarify next steps for this week, next month, and next year.

Our next jaunt into the woods is Art + Yoga May 13-15, 2016. Would love to see you there. Bisous. x

Fall Tranquilosophy Seasonal Podcast

petals

Yesterday was the official fall kickoff with the Tranquilosophy Seasonal Podcast. With nearly 100 listeners from the US, Canada, Australia, and France, we set our seasonal intentions in motion.

For almost a decade I’ve been hosting these seasonal chats focused on eight tranquility tips. The tips revolve around what I’m exploring, finding helpful, or seeking more insight into and eager to share. They often come with a story or savvy source to explore further.

In this one you’ll hear a confession of my candy corn problem, Mookie barking as Jackson gives him the evil eye, and this season’s online book club pick.

This season’s eight tips are:

Reflect
Soften {Savvy Source: The Happiness Trap}
Honor Shifts {Savvy Source: 12 Secrets of Highly Creative Women and The Artist’s Way}
Eat Clean {Savvy Source: Cleaneatingmag.com}
Declutter {Savvy Source: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up}
Prioritize {Savvy Source: Essentialism}
Capsule Dress {Savvy Source: Project 333, TranquiliT.com/capsule, and 10-Item Wardrobe}
Move {Savvy Source: Sun salute mp3 in Tranquil Treasures}

If you missed the call, the mp3 is available for purchase and comes with a 25% off TranquiliT shopping code.

Save the date for our next live gathering on Monday, January 4 at 3pm ET.

Wishing you a beautiful and tranquil launch into fall. Bring on the layers, tights, tall boots, hot cocoa, warm fires, and chunky knits! Bisous. x

Tranquilosophy: Soak in the Tub

bath

Week 37: Soak in the Tub

After a full day shuffling from clients to meetings to class, nothing heals like a soak in the tub. It’s a full body and soul balm.

Immersing in water provides mental, physical, and spiritual benefits. When my body aches, my mind is tired, or my heart feels heavy, to the bath I go. And, honestly, many moments in between.

If it’s frigid outside, the only way to warm my bones is a hot bath. As temperatures continue to drop in Washington, DC, a nightly soak will become my norm. Bring it on, fall!

Many, many years ago (4500 BC) baths were touted as a cure for mental illness. While we no longer give bathing that degree of power, I have found that water does provide healing—it soothes, comforts, and nurtures.

Takeaways from Brené Brown

AuthorRisingStrongBk-ftr

After a day feeling grumpy, I biked to a sold-out talk by Brené Brown promoting her new book, Rising Strong, in a state of disarray. Thanks to the fresh air and aerobic movement, I began to feel more myself just in time to enter Sixth and I.

Although I went solo with plans of slinking into a pew anonymously, I saw a friend waving from across the room and, eager to connect, I made my way across the balcony to her.

Shortly thereafter Brené took the stage and I settled in to my seat with devout attention—pen and paper in hand, of course. Here are the notes I penned:

* Draw a 1″x1″ square and make a list of whose opinions matter to you. Take their feedback to heart, no one else’s.

* Don’t try to win over the haters, you’re not a jack ass whisperer.

* Bring self-awareness by clarifying, “The story I’m telling myself right now is . . . ”

* If you want to change behavior, speak to emotion.

* Breathing helps us get centered.

* Ask, “What do I really need to know, poke around in, and understand?” to help process trauma.

* When having conflict share, “Here’s what happened, here’s the story I’m making up about it, is there anything we need to clean up?”

* Set boundaries around what is/isn’t okay.

* The moment you disown a story, it owns you.

* Reread shitty first drafts {the stories we tell ourselves} for patterns.

* Most compassionate people also have the best boundaries.

* The ability to open the line of communication in times of stress is transformational leadership.

* Scarcity is the birthplace of comparison.

I pedaled home grateful to be less grumpy and more in tune with what really matters. That’s something Brené preaches so eloquently and I look forward to reading her new book.

For a taste of Brené’s work, check out her two Ted Talks: Listening to Shame and The Power of Vulnerability.

Shortly I’ll get to hear Elizabeth Gilbert talk about her new book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. Stay tuned for more nuggets of inspiration. Bisous. x

Tranquilosophy: Oils

oils

Week 36 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility: Oils

Sitting at my desk overlooking the garden, I’m coated in a variety of oils.

After bathing, I douse my body in sweet almond oil and my face in some assortment of Argan oil, rosehip oil, jojoba oil, apricot oil, and essential oils, preferably jasmine.

Or if I’m in a hurry, I stick with straight Argan oil before dashing out the door.

Face and body oils have become quite popular over the past few years and I’ve jumped on the bandwagon, courtesy of having been gifted a few.

For years I loved lathering myself in chemical-filled scented body lotions such as Pineapple Mango Mint {or other random concoctions}. Then a fellow yogi mentioned how the skin was our largest organ {yep, 8 pounds and 22 square feet of it} and she preferred oils.

Bonjour Tranquillité Parfum {24-hr offer}

Apothecary parfum oil

Created in a Parisian apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower, I’m over the moon to reintroduce Tranquillité after selling out of the first batch.

Bursting with notes of gardenia, jasmine, sweet musk, rose, and sandalwood, Tranquillité is a girly delight—an intoxicating blend of all things tranquility and an homage to Parisian style.

Each ingredient was carefully chosen to represent the different aspects of who we are—earthy, sweet, floral, and fragrant. Tranquillité is a blend of essential and fragrance oils from France.

Dab or spritz to evoke a connection to your playful spirit and a reminder of self-love.

Available in parum oil infused with organic rose petals {featured above}, jojoba oil, and sweet almond oil and in an eau de toilette.

Handmade in small batches with love in DC. A portion of all profits benefit animal sanctuaries.

Ooh la la, all orders placed by 11:59pm ET on Tuesday, September 8 will receive a complimentary tealight infused with Tranquillité parfum {a preview of the forthcoming Tranquillité  home line}.
