3 DIY Recipes for Razor Bumps on Your Head

There are numerous reasons why men shave their head. However, frequent shaving may result to razor bumps in the head and more and more men are getting more concerned.

Initially, the condition may appear to just be a typical skin problem that will fade in time, but, continuous shaving actually makes it worse.

What are razor bumps?

Pseudofolliculitis barbae, commonly known as razor bumps or razor burns are small bumps on the skin which contain ingrown hair. Ingrown hairs are caused commonly by shaving or other hair removal methods such as plucking and waxing.

Causes of razor bumps

Razor bumps are often caused by ingrown hair. As hair regrows after shaving, the hair tends to curl and turn inwards.

When new skin cells grow over the shaved hair, the hair is trapped which causes the development of razor bumps.

On other instances, dead skin (caused by lack of natural moisturizing) blocks a hair follicle which forces it to eventually grow sideways or inside the skin. Ingrown hairs create small bumps which are irritable and painful at times.

Types of razor bumps

Razor bumps come in all sorts and sizes and not only develop in the head but also on other areas of the skin like face, under arms, legs, and on sensitive pubic areas.

Generally, there are two types of razor bumps: extra follicular and transfollicular.

Transfollicular is the type of bump in which the ingrown hair has grown inside the skin prohibiting the hair from going out.

On the other hand, extrafollicular is the type in which the hair has grown out but re-enters the skin. In most cases, a small amount of hair is exposed, making it possible to pluck it using a pair of tweezers. However, doing so might cause deeper ingrown hairs.

Who are mainly affected by razor bumps?

In a survey conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology, it showed that 78% of men experience different kinds of irritations caused by shaving. These include redness of the skin, soreness, and razor bumps.

One of the major factors that contribute to the development of razor bumps is genetics. Apparently, men with curly hair are more likely to experience these bumps more than straight-haired ones, most often among Indo-European and African men.

This is due to tight curly hair which is prone to curling around when hair grows after shaving. The unevenness of extreme curly hair makes it more likely to push itself back into the surface of the skin.

How to avoid razor bumps

Typically, one of the main causes of a razor bump is an unsharpened, poor quality razor blade. However, there are many ways to avoid it.

Consider replacing your dull blades with sharp ones. Using dull razor blades may result to a terrible shave because of the pressure being applied to the razor.

Not only does it increase the chances of cutting your skin, but it also becomes the major cause of ingrown hair and razor bumps.

Shaving can also be a challenge especially if you do not moisturize your skin well. After shaving, see to it that you apply a good amount of moisturizer to the shaved area to hydrate and protect your skin from itching. Applying cold compress to the skin may also reduce the worsening of razor bumps.

Here are 3 DIY recipes that you can try to soothe razor bumps on your head:
#1 - Razor Bump Spray

What you will need:

8 oz. glass spritzer bottle

1 tablespoon aloe vera gel

1 tablespoon witch hazel

1 tablespoon coconut oil

1 cup chamomile tea

5 drops lavender oil

5 drops tea tree oil

Procedure:

In a bowl, mix all ingredients thoroughly.
Use a funnel in transferring the mixed solution to the spray bottle.
Shake well before use.
Spray the solution to the affected skin before and after shaving. You may also use this solution to avoid razor bump appearances.

Aloe Vera is a traditional treatment to soothe irritated skin. Applying its gel to a razor bump or burn gives a total instant relief. There are Aloe Vera gels sold on stores, just be sure to select the unscented and unflavored ones that do not contain artificial ingredients.

Witch hazel, chamomile, lavender, and tea tree oil are common natural cures to skin inflammation. They are known to calm irritated skin because of their anti-inflammatory properties.

#2 - Oatmeal and Yogurt Paste for Razor Bumps

What you will need:

½ cup ground oatmeal

½ cup plain yogurt

1 teaspoon honey

Procedure:

In a bowl, combine equal portions of yogurt and ground oatmeal, and mix.
Then, add a teaspoon of honey to form a smooth paste.
Apply the paste to the skin, covering fully the affected area.
Allow it to dry for 30 minutes before rinsing off.
Make sure to use warm water in washing your skin.
Use the paste twice daily in the morning and before going to sleep.
Recommended period for application is three days, but you may repeat the procedure until you get better results.

Oatmeal is greatly known for removing dead skin cells and treating dry skin. Furthermore, oatmeal contains saponins, which are compounds proven as natural cleansers.

Yogurt is a good source of probiotics which help hydrate the affected skin and easily restore the skin’s outermost layer.

#3 - Razor Bumps Solution

What you will need:

½ cup apple cider vinegar

½ cup lukewarm water
1 black tea bag

½ cup hot water
Cotton balls

Procedure:

Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water in a bowl.
Apply the solution to the affected skin using a cotton ball. Let the skin dry naturally.
While drying the skin, soak the black tea bag into the hot water for a few minutes.
Remove the tea bag from hot water then place it inside the refrigerator for about ten to fifteen minutes.
Apply the cold tea bag to the skin with razor bumps while massaging it.
Repeat this method every day for as much as you want until bumps diminish.
You may also use this solution for a quick relief.

Apple cider vinegar contains natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which help soothe irritated and wounded skin. It goes well with black tea since tea bags are a great source of tannic acid, a component known for relieving razor bumps and burns.

For other people who have no time to make their own DIY treatment for razor bumps, there are products on amazon that you can purchase which offer the same relief, but in a faster and instant way.

High Time Bump Stoppe r is a good product for razor bumps. It is clinically proven and dermatologically tested. It is a concentrated cream which works great on exposed hair and reduces occurrences of bumps and ingrown hair.

5 Common Causes of Curly Hair Breakage and How to Avoid Them

There are a variety of reasons for hair breakage and curly hair is especially vulnerable to damage. Damaged curly hair can appear frizzy and coarse at the tips, making you look makes you look frazzled or disheveled.

With that said it, is important that special care and maintenance is done for curly hair. Here, we look at the 5 most common reasons for curly hair breakage. Some of them you might not be aware of and may be guilty of doing every day. We also look at how to avoid or treat damaged hair and prevent further damage and breakage.

#1 - Hair Styling Products

Hair colorants, dyes, perming solution, and other hair products can contain strong chemicals that, when frequently applied on hair, may cause chemical build-up. These can weaken the strands and cause hair breakage. Even some shampoos can contribute to hair breakage, especially those with a more alkaline or basic pH level.

Choose a mild shampoo with a more neutral pH level. It is also good to use a shampoo made especially for colored and/or permed hair that has both cleansing and protective properties. Using a clarifying shampoo once a week also helps improve hair health by breaking the build up of chemicals from products that have accumulated on the hair from everyday shampooing and styling.

The Baebody Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo is a volumizing and moisturizing shampoo that is gentle on curly and color treated hair, and is a must-try! You can also try the Cliniderm Neutral pH Gentle Hair Shampoo if you are looking for a more pH balanced shampoo. The Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo helps lift up to 90% of dulling residue left behind by shampoos and styling products, and is great for your weekly cleansing.

#2 - Over-Brushing

Brushing your hair too much can also weaken the hair and cause breakage. Applying too much friction to the hair can agitate and weaken the hair strands. Remember you only need to brush your hair as much as you need to style it and that applying 100 brushstrokes is purely a myth. While brushing your hair helps to distribute the natural oils on your scalp, overly doing it can do more harm than good to your hair.

When shopping for a hairbrush, choose one that can be used for both wet and dry hair. These types of brushes are sturdy but soft and flexible enough to dance its way through a mass of curly hair.

The Wet Brush Pro Detangle Hair Brush is perfect for all hair types and can be used on wet and dry hair. Its soft flexible bristles help prevent tangles, frizz, and breakage.

#3 - Extreme Heat on Hair

Frequent styling using heating tools can sometimes dry out and remove moisture from the hair making the hair brittle and prone to breakage. Heating tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling tongs may damage the hair over time. Hair breakage can simply be avoided by reducing the use of these heating tools. However, if you can’t go out of the house without drying your hair, the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is your best friend. It is engineered to protect hair from extreme heat damage by reducing the amount of time it takes to dry hair. Its small but powerful motor combined with Air Multiplier technology produces a high-velocity jet of controlled hair for the most efficient drying and precision styling. Its intelligent heat control also adjusts air temperature over 40 times a second to prevent damage from extreme heat.

#4 - Towel Drying

Rubbing vigorously with a rough towel can damage the hair, cause frizzing and hair breakage. Since hair breaks more easily when wet, special care should be taken when drying hair after a shower. Instead of rubbing the hair, you can try wrapping a towel around your head and let it sit for a bit to absorb the moisture in your hair. Also avoid using rough cotton terry towels that can break the strands and absorb very little moisture from the hair. Instead, look for the ones made of microfiber cloth that is soft and gentle to your hair while quickly absorbing any moisture.

The DuraComfort Essentials Super Absorbent Anti-Frizz Microfiber Hair Towel is a great microfiber hair towel that quickly absorbs moisture from the hair and cuts your blow-drying time in half! It leaves your hair just slightly damp which makes it easier to manage and style.

#5 - Health and Lifestyle

Healthy hair is also directly linked to nutrition and stress. There are certain nutrients that are essential to healthy hair growth and weakened hair that appears dry, dull, brittle or easily breaks may signal a deficiency in these nutrients. Biotin contained in eggs and fish is essential for healthy hair growth. Brazil nuts is also good for promoting hair health with its hair-boosting selenium. Other essential elements for healthy hair include Omega-3 fatty acids, Protein, Vitamin D, Iron, and Zinc.

Stress is also an important factor and too much of it can wreak havoc on your health, with the first signs showing through your hair. During a period of extreme stress, the hair growth cycle goes haywire and reaches the resting stage before the right time causing the hair to become loose from the scalp and fall off. This is why when people are stressed, they shed hair more than normal. However, unusual amounts of hair shedding should be checked by a doctor to ensure that there are no underlying causes.

It is important therefore to manage stress wisely and to not succumb to the pressures of everyday life. It also helps to have work-life balance and spending enough quality time with family and friends. You can also try self-relaxation techniques or read books on mindfulness to help let go of stress and be more present in the moment.

Aromatherapy is also a great way to relieve stress by immersing yourself in fragrances that help put your mind at ease, promote focus, and happiness. You can easily set up your own aromatherapy session at home with the use of essential oils and you can be relaxed and stress free in no time.

There is no doubt that curly hair is beautiful. It makes a woman look gorgeous and sexy and wild! While some people who have been blessed with naturally curly hair may consider it a curse (after all they can be notoriously difficult to manage), they can change that with the proper care and maintenance and by following the steps outlined above.

Everyday hair is exposed to the elements and to all kinds of stressors that can weaken the hair. Therefore, it is very important that you protect your hair and keep it well maintained to keep it shiny and healthy-looking.

Firstly, apply hair chemicals in moderation and use a pH balanced shampoo as well as a clarifying shampoo once a week. Do not over-brush your hair and only brush it when you are styling your hair. Avoid applying too much heat to your hair and choose a blow-dryer with an efficient blow-drying system. Instead of vigorously drying your hair with a cotton terry cloth towel, use a microfiber hair towel instead that will not damage your hair.

Aside from these nifty tools, it is also important to be healthy from within by eating the right kinds of food and having a balanced diet, so that it can manifest on the outside. You also need to manage your stress levels so that it does not affect your overall well-being. If you do encounter stress, you can use self-relaxation techniques that you can do at home to do away with stress.

Having curly hair can be a little bit tricky to pull off but with some extra love and the right set of tools, you're sure to rock those curls in no time!

5 Must-Have Hair Clippers for Home Use

Hair clippers are among the most essential tools in the men’s grooming section; you’ll find one in almost every barbershop. Unlike hair trimmers that are used for shorter or finer hair, hair clippers are used to “adjust” or prep longer hair for the final cut.

Popular Hair Styling Tools to Add to Your Hair Styling Kit

Styling hair is a form of expression. It brings out the best in every person by increasing confidence levels and improving overall looks. Both men and women can benefit from styling hair.

In styling hair, people use different kinds of tools. Each tool has its use to achieve certain hairstyles. Here’s a basic list of hair styling tools and their uses.

Hair Iron

Hair irons use heat to structure hair. There are curling tongs to make curls and crimpers for creating large or small hair crimps. There are also straighteners to straighten hair.

Using a hair iron needs a lot of care. Some people put on protectors in different forms such as sprays or conditioners to protect hair from immense heat.

But, not everyone can master using hair irons. It may take time and practice to get the best results. Why not try using lace front wigs that already have curls to save time on curling?

For people who like to spice up their hairstyle often, a 2-in-1 product is the best option. This product from Horatii is both a straightener and curling iron in one.

Hairdryer

A hairdryer is one of the essentials in hairstyling. It’s a device that needs electricity to work. It blows hot and/or cool air to hair. This helps speed up drying for quick styling.

It’s also useful for shaping hair when used with other tools. Old hairdryer models can be too harsh on the hair. That’s why newer models have amazing features for easier styling and hair protection.

This product from Dyson may not look like a conventional hairdryer. But, it’s lightweight and has negative ions which help lessen static in hair. Its versatility and features make it a great product for all hair types.

Hairbrush and Comb

Every person must have a hairbrush and a comb. It’s not enough to only have one of them since they have different uses.

Typically, people with short hair don’t use hairbrushes. But, it’s important to have one especially when styling. A hairbrush is an important styling tool for both long and short hair. It’s often used together with a hairdryer.

This round hairbrush from Olivia Garden is a great investment. It comes in different sizes. Also, it’s great for adding more shine and reduce flyaway and frizz.

Combs are usually used for detangling hair. They come in different sizes and designs. They’re also made from different materials. Combs can be wide-toothed or fine-toothed.

Wooden combs give the best results. They detangle hair without static. Onedor offers a two-comb set – one wide-toothed and one fine-toothed. They’re great for getting hair ready for styling.

Hair Rollers

For people who don’t want to use hot curling irons, hair rollers may be the best option. They’re used to create curls by attaching the rollers onto the hair. There are also different types of hair rollers.

Heated rollers
Velcro rollers
Foam rollers
Steam rollers
Flexi rods
Magnetic rollers
Ribbon curlers
Sponge rollers
Brush rollers

There’s a type of hair roller, depending on the kind of hair, hairstyle to achieve, and lifestyle.

For instance, sponge and foam rollers are best for busy people. They can be attached at night. They’re softer compared to other rollers so it won’t be painful to sleep in them. They’re also great for keeping lace front wig curls intact before the main event.

Heated rollers can create quick curls. They come in various sizes that can create different types of curls. This type uses heat to create curls. It’s perfect for people who can’t seem to master using curling irons.

Hairpins and Clips

Hairpins and clips may be small, but they’re also important tools when styling hair. They’re not only used as embellishments. They also help in keeping hair in place when styling.

There are different types of hairpins and clips.

Bobby pins
Barrettes
Claw clips
Snap clips
Duckbill clips
Alligator clips
Banana clips
Double prong clips
Double prong curls

Each of these hairpins and clips has specific purposes. For example, a claw clip holds a large portion of hair. This is useful when using a hair iron on small segments. It can hold the larger part, while the smaller portion is being styled.

An alligator clip is often found and used in hair salons. It’s also used to hold hair out of the way. It can hold a few strands of thin hair, as well as a lot of thick hair strands. It will depend on how properly it’s used.

Many hairpins and clips also come in beautiful designs and colors. These are often used to adorn styled hair. They’re also made from different materials. For styling, it’s best to use metal and plastic hairpins and clips.

This set of bobby pins by Meta-grip come in a 300-piece container. It’s great since the bobby pins can be stored neatly. Also, it’s useful for styling and holding styled hair in pain.

Hair Elastics

Hair elastics come in different colors and sizes. Men and women with long hair often use these. They’re used to hold the hair in place by gathering the hair and going around the hair.

There are also used for styling like creating braids. Cheap hair elastics are ones that are bare latex or rubber. These stay on the hair securely.

However, elastics covered in fabric are the best to use. Without a fabric layer, the elastic may become painful to remove and damage the hair.

These Goody Ouchless hair elastics don’t have metal parts that can damage hair. They also come in different colors that are perfect for different hairstyles and personalities. There are also great to use on lace front wigs without damaging them.

Headbands

A headband is often made from cloth, metal, or plastic. It goes over the forehead and keeps the hair away from the face. It comes in a wide array of colors, designs, and styles.

It’s often used before styling hair when someone needs to do makeup first. But, certain hairstyles may find headbands useful.

For a clean look, a plain headband may go well with a straightened hair. For an everyday look, use one or two pieces of thin solid headbands with short volumized hair.

Hair Extensions and Wigs

Hair takes a long time to grow. That’s why short-haired people who want to get a quick long hairstyle can use hair extensions and wigs.

Hair extensions can help make hair longer. It’s also a great way to add volume to limp and thinning hair. They come in different colors and textures.

Wigs can be most helpful to people suffering from diseases like severe alopecia or hair loss. There are various types of wigs to choose from.

Full lace
Lace front
Monofilament

For people who just want to change their hairstyle for a short time, a lace front wig is the best choice.

Many hair extensions and wigs are now made with natural hair. There are also some made with synthetic hair. But, these won’t give the best natural look.

The great thing about natural hair extensions and wigs is that they can be styles as well. But, some wigs and extensions are already styled and cut. It will all depend on the person’s preference.

How to Start a Successful Hair Care Blog in 3 Easy Steps

Shiny and beautiful hair leaves a good impression. Men see hair as the crown and glory of women.

Nowadays, not everyone has the time and money for hair care. This is why they turn to hair care blogs in order to get professional tips.

According to LAtimes, a subsidiary of the Los Angeles Times, the number of blogs for hair health is increasing. If you want to launch a hair care blog, just continue reading. You’ll be able to launch your blog in no time.

Here are the 3 simple steps you should follow to create a lead-generating blog.

Create Domain Name & Setup Hosting
Install WordPress
Add Design Flare

STEP 1: Domain Name & Hosting Provider
Your Domain Name

Before you can create a website, you have to choose a domain name. This is your website’s “address”. For example, the domain name of this website is www.Clishea.co. Once you have thought of some domain names, you need to check to see if it is available. Use this tool as a starting point to see if your website domain idea is available.

Your preferred domain name will be the name of your blog or website. It should be easy to memorize and related to your blog’s content.

Since you focus on hair care, the domain name for your blog should be related to that topic.

Other than this website, here are some of the most popular hair care blogs on the web.

Hairlicious Inc
Hair Sentinel
Naturally Curly
Hair Romance
Luxy Hair

Do you notice what they have in common? The name of the blog represents its content and media. And, the names above assert authority.

The domain name of your blog must have the following characteristics:

It’s short
It defines your brand
It asserts authority
It contains a keyword
It’s easy to type and memorize

Don’t forget, once you’ve chosen a domain name, you must check its availability.

If checking availability via Bluehost, click the “Domains” tab from the homepage. Enter the name on the search field. Next, press "Enter" or click the “Search” button. If someone is already using that name, you can’t use it.

Your Hosting Provider

If you’re new to blogging, this may be the first time you’ve ever heard about Bluehost. Bluehost is a web hosting company.

A web host, like Bluehost, gives websites and blogs a space on the internet. They enable your blog to be seen by searchers and users on the web.

How do they do that? Web hosting providers own data centers. Data centers house servers. And, servers contain data from websites and blogs.

In essence, web hosts are like landlords. They provide housing for your website for a specific period. As their client, you’re obligated to pay for monthly or yearly rent.

In web hosting, this rent is called subscription.

Web hosts also provide the technologies you need to launch your website on the internet.

Bluehost offers the following services:

WordPress hosting
Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting
Shared hosting
Dedicated hosting
WooCommerce hosting
Cloud hosting
Domain name services

Do you need all of these listed services today. No. Generally, a web host is a necessity in creating a website or blog. Without one, you can’t publish anything. You can’t post your articles or upload your images and videos.

So, you should visit Bluehost.com first before worrying about CMSs and Monetizing your blog.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a programmer or coding skills to start a blog.

Now, it’s time to set up your hosting. Here’s an overview of the process.

Remember, if you don’t have time to manage a blog, you may use The Ultimate Blog Planner. Whether you want to build an online reputation, increase product sales, or promote digital content, you must be hands-on with your blog.

Updates must be regular, and you must manage it daily. You must also act as a moderator. The comment sections on each blog page should be checked regularly for trolls and vulgar posts. Nobody wants to visit a blog full of offensive language. Trolls are all over the internet nowadays, and they can ruin a website’s reputation.

Answering inquiries also positively affects your brand. If your blog can cater to the needs of your prospects, then the right people will visit your pages.

Creating a blog is easy, but running one can be hard. It’s time-consuming. You have to invite influencers, affiliates, and sponsors, and track stats and web traffic. If you think these tasks are overwhelming for you, it’s recommended to use an Ultimate Blog Planner.

DIY Hair Masks with Yogurt for Hair Damage

Hair damage is not something you should disregard. It can hamper self-confidence and if the problem is with nutrition, it’s crucial to take care of it immediately.

Hair masks can help in naturally and safely restoring damaged hair. Yogurt as a main hair mask ingredient can have many benefits on the scalp and hair. This natural product also has many other benefits in the body. It has potent anti-fungal and anti-infective properties that protect against various infections. It also has calming and soothing effects that can help in reducing many inflammatory conditions. It also has rich nutrient profile that can nourish various organs, including the scalp and hair.

Causes of hair damage

Many factors contribute to hair damage. Most of these are exposure to harmful elements and too little nutrition, such as:

Too little moisture

It may be from poor hydration (not drinking enough water) or using harsh chemicals on hair that strip off moisture. Over-washing can also remove the protective oils from the hair strands. Without the natural oils, moisture in the hair strands dissipates more quickly. The hair strands become dry, brittle and easily damaged if it lacks moisture.

Too much heat

This may be in the form of using heat styling equipment like curling iron and hair straighteners. Blow-dryers on hot settings also apply too much heat that can damage the hair. Blow-dryers on high setting cause greater damage if the hair is still dripping wet right before it is blow-dried.

Damaging heat can also come from direct exposure to sunlight. It may also come from spending too much time near other heat sources, such as working with a kiln for long hours.

Chemical exposure

Harsh chemicals can come from the hair products used such as shampoos and dyes. Dyeing entails the use of very harsh chemicals that strip the original color off from hair. Ammonia in most shampoos are also very damaging to the hair.

No deep conditioning

Hair growth and strength depends on the health of the hair follicles. Deep conditioning is needed regularly to nourish and strengthen the hair follicles. Deep conditioning can be done at least once a week or so. Skipping this can cause hair follicles to become weaker.

Cotton pillowcases

Cotton pillowcases can rub the hair strands and remove the protective oils. The rubbing itself can damage the strands, much like rubbing a coarse file over fine thread. This can lead to fraying and weakening of the strands.

Towel drying

Similarly to using cotton pillowcases, towel drying rubs the hair strands and damages them.

Unbalanced diet

Proper nutrition is very important. No matter how much care is given to the hair strands, it won’t do much good if the body is not properly nourished. Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water every day to strengthen the hair against damage.

Potential solutions for hair damage

There are many things that can be done to protect the hair from getting damaged and to help restore its health.

Use gentle hair products

Avoid ammonia and similar harsh chemicals. Avoid hair dyes or dyeing the hair too often. Allow for the hair and scalp to breathe in between treatments.

Dirt, dust, grime and dead cells should be removed from the hair to allow it to breathe. Natural shampoo is one of the best products to use for cleaning the hair.

Get regular trimming

Damaged hair can be revived by getting it regularly trimmed. This will remove the damaged portions and allow your hair to recover faster.

Follow a healthy hair regimen

This is the time to give more attention to the health of your hair. Use gentle hair products and shampoos. If possible, avoid or reduce treatments while the hair strands are recovering from damage. Reduce the frequency of dyes and heat styling.

Deep condition the hair to bring back lost nutrients to the hair follicles. Remove dead cells and dirt from hair to allow it to breathe.

At this point, hair masks can do a lot of help in restoring damaged hair. Hair masks provide nourishment directly to the hair strands to strengthen them.

This hair care regimen will only be effective if the products used are gentle. Going natural and creating the hair treatment products yourself can help in avoiding many harsh chemicals that worsen hair damage.

The power of yogurt for hair and scalp

Yogurt is a very powerful ingredient that safely, effectively and gently nourishes the scalp and hair. This has many benefits for scalp and hair, such as:

Dandruff buster

Yogurt has a powerful anti-fungal property that can effectively treat dandruff. It is powerful against dandruff yet gentle enough on the scalp and hair. As a bonus, yogurt has an anti-inflammatory, soothing effect on the scalp. This can relieve itching and irritation of dandruff-affected scalp.

Frizz tamer

Many people battle with frizzy hair, especially in the summer. The scalp is dry and irritated, hair going every which way. Yogurt’s soothing and cooling effect helps to relieve the dryness. It can calm and soften frizzy hair with its moisturizing effect, too.

Nourishes hair

Yogurt is rich in nutrients that can bring back vitality to hair and scalp. It has vitamin B12 for boosting hair growth. Niacin protects against premature hair aging and appearance of gray hair. Biotin restores health to damaged hair. Calcium gives hair volume, density and strength. Choline improves blood flow to hair follicles for healthier hair growth. Iodine strengthens the hair follicles for healthy growth and stronger hair shaft.

Hair hydrating

Yogurt contains lactic acid. This helps to hydrate the hair strands. This nutrient also helps to wash away dead skin cells to cleanse the hair better.

Hair Mask Recipes

 Yogurt-Strawberry Hair Mask

This recipe helps to restore damaged hair through many ways. Yogurt softens hair while coconut oil stimulates hair growth. Egg restores minerals to the hair shaft while strawberry makes hair shinier.

Ingredients

¼ cup of yogurt
3-4 pieces ripe strawberries
2 tablespoons of coconut oil

1 egg

Directions

Put yogurt, coconut oil and strawberries in a blender.
Blitz until a well-mixed paste is formed.
Add the egg and gently pulse to mix it well into the paste.
Transfer the mask into a small container.

Application

Place mask on the palms and rub a few times.
Apply the mask evenly all over dry hair.
Cover the head with a shower cap and allow the mask to sit for 3 minutes.
Wash the mask off with natural shampoo.
Rinse well.

This recipe is meant for single-use only. Use this mask once every 2 weeks to get shinier, healthier-looking hair. Mix another batch for every use. Long storage is not recommended as this may spoil in between use.

Yogurt-Olive Oil Hair Mask

The combination of yogurt and olive oil conditions hair and promotes healthy hair growth. The essential fatty acids in olive oil help strengthen hair follicles. Eggs add nutrition to hair. The sulfur in the egg also helps balance oil secretion for healthier, softer hair.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons yogurt
1 teaspoon olive oil

1 egg

Directions

Put all ingredients in a blender and mix well into a smooth paste.
Place mask in a small shallow container.

Application

Rub the mask between the palms before applying onto wet hair.
Massage the mask gently from scalp to the tips of the hair.
Use a shower cap to cover the hair.
Leave the mask on for 15 minutes.
Rinse the mask off with cold water.

This recipe is for single use only. Apply repeatedly at least once every 2 weeks to promote healthy hair growth and repair.

Deep Conditioning Yogurt-Honey Hair Mask

This recipe works for dry, frizzy hair.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of natural yogurt
1 tablespoon of honey

Directions

Place yogurt and honey in a small shallow bowl.
Mix well with a spoon.

Application

Place the mask on the palms and gently rub a few times for even application.
Apply the mask onto the scalp.
Gently massage and spread the mask towards the entire length of the hair.
Massage well until the entire scalp is coated.
Let the mask sit on the scalp and hair for 15 to 20 minutes.
Rinse well with lots of lukewarm water. If preferred, apply a small amount of your usual conditioner on the ends of the hair.

This recipe is for short to medium-length hair. For longer hair, double the amounts indicated in the recipe. Use this treatment once a week to restore damaged hair.

Titanium vs. Ceramic Curling Irons - Which is Better?

There is a divide amongst hair stylists and everyone else who loves to style their hair. Some recommend titanium curling irons while others will give their all-out vote to ceramic curling irons.

The question is—titanium vs. ceramic curling irons, which one is better?

Quick and Easy Answer: it depends on your hair and your hair needs.

The fact of the matter is that there are several factors that you need to consider before you make your choice. Those who recommend ceramic curling irons do so because in their experience that is the one that worked for them.

It is the thing that they observed and maybe that is what they found in most effective in the experiences of other folks as well. Guess what. The same is true for those who favor titanium curling irons.

In this review we will go over the factors that you should consider when you decide which one is better—titanium or ceramic curling irons. We will also go over the pros and cons of each material.

After the little guide and comparison we will then give you a list of the best curling irons in the market today.

Factors to Consider

There are several factors to consider if you are choosing between ceramic or titanium curling irons. Here they are:

Price

One of the really big things that people consider is the price of curling iron that they want to buy. Your budget will always be a determining factor in every decision you make.

Now, here’s the cold fact – ceramic curling irons are typically slightly more expensive than their titanium counterparts. Well, that is if the curling iron you’re looking at is made of pure ceramic.

There are ceramic curling irons that are more budget friendly and yes they’re not made from 100% pure ceramic. That means there are also titanium curling irons that are more expensive—but they are usually the high end brands.

That means you should check the label before you buy either a ceramic or a titanium curling iron. That will reduce the amount of disappointment you will get, budget-wise.

Effectiveness

When we refer to the effectiveness of a curling iron what we are actually looking for is its level of efficiency. The more efficient a curling iron is the better and more effective it becomes—that is in the eyes of the consumer.

We often measure the efficiency of a curling iron by how well it curls our hair. We also take into account how fast it does the job. Another important thing we consider is how well the curls hold after the process is over.

Just like any other metal, we should expect titanium to get heated a lot faster compared to ceramic. That may already be a pretty good criterion for some.

Now, there is a downside to that when it comes to titanium curling irons. Yes, they heat up pretty fast but they don’t heat up evenly. In certain brands (I’m not saying that it happens to all models and brands) you will have hot spots and cold spots on the curling iron.

Ceramic curling irons don’t have that issue. These things usually heat up quite evenly, which is something that some hair stylists look for. That means all your hair strands get the same treatment and you won’t get some sides curled well while others are more like meh.

Heat Transfer

Heat transfer simply refers to how fast a material can transfer heat to another substance. In this case how fast titanium or ceramic can transfer its heat to your hair.

Again, titanium, being a metal, has a faster heat transfer compared to ceramic. A lot of ceramic curling irons will take up to 30 seconds to completely transfer their maximum temperature to your hair.

Titanium curling irons on the other hand only take a fraction of that time to transfer their maximum heat to your hair. That means if you work on hair a lot faster, then titanium curling irons are for you.

If you run a busy hair salon and you need to work fast since you have a lot of customers waiting, then a titanium curling iron is the one for you. But if you’re not that busy but want a nice even curl every single time then a ceramic one is a better option.

Ease of Use

Which is easier to use, a titanium curling iron or a ceramic one? One of the factors that affect ease of use is the design of the curling iron. That will vary from one manufacturer’s model to the other.

Of course (design-wise) that has nothing to do with the material being used to construct the curling iron. So, how does the material affect the user?

It is actually the weight of the curling iron that we are looking for in this case. Titanium curling irons are always lighter than their ceramic counterparts.

That means titanium irons are usually easier to use because they do not give your hands and wrists any undue strain. That is also why professional hair stylists prefer titanium curling irons.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any stylists that use ceramic curling irons. But if you need something that you will tend to use the entire day, I’d rather go for a titanium curling iron so you won’t have to worry about the weight of the iron the whole day.

Durability

The last factor that you should consider is durability. If you plan to use your curling iron for commercial purposes—let’s say in your salon—then you definitely want to get one that will last a lot longer.

Of course, a curling iron can be considered a significant investment even for personal use. If your curling iron can last for a decade then you can say that it was truly durable.

The main advantage of ceramic curling irons is that gentle even heating they provide, which is great for certain hairs. But when it comes to durability, there is no doubt that a titanium curling iron is definitely the better choice.

Now, this is can be an expensive experiment so you don’t have to do it at home. Just imagine dropping both a titanium and ceramic curling iron on the floor. It should be pretty obvious that the ceramic one will break and not the titanium iron.

Ceramic curling irons require a lot of care. You can keep one in your kit but you should make sure to keep it safe. Don’t leave it lying around in the salon—always keep it in its protective case.

Why Get a Ceramic Curling Iron

Ceramic curling irons are known for their smooth even surface. Because of that your hair tends to get a curl that is more even than what you will get out of any metal based curling iron.

Dust and debris don’t collect on ceramic, which is not something we can say for titanium or other curling irons that have metal heating plates. You can also be sure that the heat won’t spike off a ceramic surface, which is why you get a gentle even heat from it.

Pros

Even heat
Doesn’t accumulate dust
Even curls
Best option for hair that is easy to curl
It is also the better option for damaged hair

Cons

Expensive
Requires a lot of care (don’t dare drop it!)
Heavier—which means it isn’t that easy to use

Why Get a Titanium Curling Iron

Titanium is a great heat conductor. It tends to heat up a lot faster allowing you to work quickly and get you going. If you’re a professional stylist or someone who is just always in a hurry, then this is a better option for you.

Pros

Heats up really fast—often at a fraction of the time for a ceramic curling iron to get to maximum heat.
More durable—it’s made of metal and titanium is a really tough kind of metal at that.
Light weight—it is easy on your hands and easier to wield and heft. If you’re going to be in the salon curling hair all day then this is the better option.
Titanium curling irons are also usually more budget friendly compared to ceramic curling irons.
Faster heat transfer, which makes it better for hard to curl hair as well as for coarse hair.

Cons

Uneven heat – titanium curling irons usually have hot and cold spots.
It may get too hot for some hair types—if you have heavily damaged hair due to a lot of styling then a titanium curling hair may not be a good option for you.
Not suited for people with thinner hair strands.

More Buying Tips

Here are a few more factors that you should consider before you buy a curling iron (titanium or otherwise).

Automatic on/off system
Heat settings that suit your needs
Cord size—some people prefer longer cords while others want medium to shorter cords. It depends on what you need and how you will use your curling iron.
Barrel diameter

5 DIY Hair Detanglers for Type 4 Natural Hair

Type 4 Hair is more commonly known as kinky or Afro hair. Although anyone can have their hair done in a curly or Afro style, black Americans tend to be born with it.

Being coily, type 4 hair is prone to developing tangles and frizz. It has 3 subtypes: 4A, 4B, and 4C.

Type 4A

Type 4A has dense, tight coils of hair. The hair stands make an S pattern. Having fewer cuticle layers, type 4A hair strands break more easily.

This subtype retains the most moisture out of all the 4’s. Because of this, thicker emollients like products with creams or butters are ideal for this type.

Type 4B

Type 4B carries Z-shaped angles that are not as defined as Type 4A coils. It creates a fluffy appearance.

This type of hair is drier and more brittle because the strands bend sharply. It can also shrink more than half of its original length.

To protect this fragile hair type, hairstyles that pull on the strands such as ponytails and curlers should be avoided. Moisturize and deep condition type 4B hair frequently.

Type 4C

Type 4C resembles s4B but is less defined. This type has delicate strands that would also require to be frequently moisturized.

Hair Detanglers

A hair detangler is a product with ingredients that make hair easier to manage. It does this through several ways – by making the hair slippery by coating with a polymer (synthetic material), by increasing acidity to tighten up each hair strand,  by softening the outer surfaces of the hair, and by creating a mildly positive electric charge that counteracts static and frizzy hair.

You will find all sorts of detanglers, but they usually have the same common ingredients: acidifiers, cationic surfactants (chemicals that bind to negatively charged hair molecules), hydrolyzed proteins that repair broken hair strands, oils that fill up the pores of damaged or dry hair, and silicone, which adds a glossy coat to the strands.

Herbal products have a natural ingredient called mucilage. It is a gelatin-like substance derived from plant seeds and roots. It weakens cohesion between hair strands and allows them to slide against each other freely. This makes it easier to separate them and remove shedding hair.

If you’re thinking of saving money, try making your own detangler with materials you already have at home. A simple way to detangle is to mix 3 tablespoons of hair conditioner with water in a 12-oz spray bottle. Spray this on your hair and comb it through until tangles are straightened out. It is best if you get a conditioner that is designed for Type 4 hair.

Want something organic? Try these:

Apple Cider Vinegar Detangler

Mix 2 cups of clean, lukewarm water with half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. After your regular shampoo, pour this over your hair. Use a bit of fragrant conditioner to mask the smell and to add smoothness. Rinse your hair thoroughly afterwards.

Olive Oil Detangling Shampoo

This shampoo makes use of 1 tbsp olive oil soap flakes (grate the soap to get the flakes), ½ cup water, and an essential oil or herbal extract of your choice.

Boil water in a pan. Reduce the heat and add the soap flakes to the water, stirring continuously until they have dissolved. Remove from the heat and let it cool. Stir in a few drops of the essential oil or herbal extract.

Lather the shampoo into your hair and leave on for 5 to 15 minutes. Rinse continuously with running water, making sure that you have removed any undissolved flakes.

Detangling Herbal Conditioner for Fine, Greasy Hair

Fine kinky hair is prone to becoming greasy because of the presence of more hair follicles that produce sebum. Using the following herbs will help reduce greasiness so the hair won’t clump together.

The ingredients are as follows:

1 tsp dried rosemary leaves
1 tsp dried chamomile flowers
1 tsp dried stinging nettle leaves
100 ml water
1 tbsp vinegar

Collect all the herbs in a bowl. Boil the water and then pour it on the herbs.

Pour the vinegar and let it infuse for about 10 – 15 minutes before straining the concoction through a sieve.

After shampooing, apply this herbal conditioner to your damp hair. Leave it on.

Detangling Shampoo for Dry Hair

Eggs will help nourish and detangle dry hair. It is best to use this formulation immediately to prevent it from spoiling.

For this, you will need 2 egg yolks, 1 egg white, 2 glasses of water, a teaspoon of honey, and the juice of one lemon.

1 handful of fresh watercress leaves

Chop the watercress leaves and collect them in the bowl. Blend the water and vinegar in another bowl. Pour the liquid over the watercress. Allow the liquid to infuse overnight, then strain. After shampooing, pour it over your hair and then dry it.

There is a vast number of detangling recipes that could be made from household materials. For as long as you remember the basic ingredients of detanglers, you will always find a way to create an inexpensive alternative to commercial products. However, you must remember what worked and what didn’t, so it’s a good idea to keep a list of what you’ve already tried so far.

If you don’t want the trial and error, look for other recipes that have worked for other people. Blogs like this one  will help you find one that’s suitable for your hair type more quickly.

If you have little time to experiment with other people’s formulas, consider using tried-and-tested products. There are many brands that cater to Type 4 hair, with some of them having names that clearly say that they are for the kinky-haired:

Kinky-Curly Knot Today

Kinky-Curly provides hair-care products for curly, kinky, and wavy hair. One of their products is Knot Today. It is a detangler and leave-on conditioner that manages knots and smoothens hair cuticles. Those with wavy hair can use it as a regular conditioner that is rinsed afterwards, but those who have thick and curly hair can use it as a leave-on. It is recommended for using after removing hair extensions and braid.

To use this, apply it throughout your hair with your hands or a comb. If you decide not to wash it out, run some water on your scalp so you will distribute it evenly.

Knot Today ingredients are natural and includes mango extracts, marshmallow root, slipper elm, lemongrass, citric acid, behetrimonium methosulfate (BTMS), and phenoxyethanol.

BTMS is created from rapeseed oil. It is considered as one of the most effective substances that can detangle hair. It can penetrate the hair shaft, so the hair becomes manageable from the root towards the ends. Phenoxyethanol is an FDA-approved preservative used for hair and cosmetic products.

SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Leave-In Detangler

This product detangles and controls Type4 hair frizz with the use of shea oil, coconut oil, and coconut milk. It’s novel ingredient acacia Senegal serves as the detangler and frizz preventer. Manufacturers promise that their product will leave your hair smelling like a coconut breeze.

To use, spray the product generously on damp hair. Focus on applying it to the middle down to the ends of your hair so it won’t feel oily on your scalp. Dry it naturally or use a blow dryer.

Although this product has positive reviews, take note that some may be allergic to its organic ingredients. It warns users to discontinue usage if signs of irritation occur, such as itchiness, redness, swelling, and the like.

Ouidad Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner

Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner is a formula that claims to restore curls in as little as 2 minutes. It has a rich formulation that softens and moisturizes hair without weighing it down. It penetrates the hair cuticle and keeps moisture within it. The active substance is grapeseed oil.

TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING YOUR DETANGLER

You will find different kinds of detanglers – leave-on sprays, deep conditioners, shampoos, creams, hydrating masks, and so on.  These are some things to consider when choosing:

Ingredients – Do you prefer organic hair products? Be warned that herbal products will tend to have synthetic ingredients mixed in. What’s important is that you check whether a product contains something that you’re allergic to or not. Remember that something is not completely safe even if it claims to be all-natural.

Method of Application – Would you like to rinse it out or leave it on? Thicker hair can handle leave-ons, but if your hair is fine, you need to wash it, so it won’t turn into grease. Also, consider how much time you have. There are those that can be applied quickly, while others have special instructions like putting it on and then rinsing it off several times. Before buying anything, read the instructions first.

Reviews – What are the other customers’ experiences? Since you have Type 4 hair, it’s a good idea to go into forums that are dedicated for Afro-haired individuals. Although you can read product reviews, forums allow you to chat and ask questions.

Budget – Detanglers can cost a few dollars to hundreds depending on the brand. Think about how much you are willing to spend for something that you can probably get in inexpensive ways.

Time Available - As mentioned, you can make a detangler out of relatively cheap supplies, but it will cost you time to prepare. Is a DIY detangler worth losing time over?  How often will you use it? If your hair gets tangled up often, consider buying in bulk or making a lot of the solution.

Detanglers are available for type 1 - 4. If you have Type 4 hair, it is best if you find detanglers that are suited for your hair type. What will work for type 1 may not work for you because of the unique qualities of your hair.

If you’re not sure about what to buy, consider buying a product from a hair salon.  You could also find one online. Specify that you want a detangler for Type 4.

Of course, you will need less detanglers if you handle your hair carefully.  Don’t forget to moisturize your hair whenever you notice it drying out. Try getting a hot oil treatment every few months so you don’t have to apply moisturizers every now and then. Dry hair is prone to breakage and unruly hair strands.

Try not to wash your hair loose but braid it instead. This will keep the curls intact and prevent them from tangling up with each other.

Avoid styles that stretch your hair especially if your hair is vulnerable to shrinkage. If your hair is the type that becomes shorter than it really is, it is likely to be more affected by being pulled. Hairstyles to skip are tight ponytails and curled up sets.

Do not wet a knot in your hair because it will just get harder to untie. Apply butter or oil to it instead. Gradually pull the individual strands until you undo the knot. Use a blunt item for this, such as a pencil or the end of a long-tailed comb.

In summary, detangling Type 4 Hair involves understanding it and addressing its unique challenges. You can make detanglers on your own but involves time and some risk. If you want convenience, buy products that are created specifically for your hair type and choose products that have earned a good reputation. Research not only by reading the reviews, but by asking around and participating in forums that are dedicated for Hair Type 4. More importantly, learn how to take care of your hair better so you won’t have to rely on detanglers so often.

Tips for Selecting the Best Flat Iron for your Hair Type

What Kind of Flat Iron is Best for Your Hair Type?

The hair is known to be the crowning glory. Everyone wants to sport healthy and well-polished hair, regardless of hair type. Using an electronic flat iron is one of the best-known shortcuts. Electronic flat iron, also known as hair straighteners, use plates that are heated to flatten each hair strand.

For simplicity, there are four major hair types: fine hair (Type 1), wavy hair (Type 2), curly hair (Type 3), and kinky hair (Type 4). Mastery of each hair type is key to achieving straight, healthy-looking, and glossy hair. Each hair type has a corresponding flat iron appropriate to be used – selecting the correct flat iron for specific types of hair is key to avoiding possible damages.

Hair straighteners or electronic flat irons usually work under the principle of flattening your follicle, which is considered to be more efficient than paddle brushing or blow drying. However, one has to consider carefully the natural hair type and texture. For example, if you have thick and curly hair, you need to use an iron that has the capacity to achieve higher levels of temperature. If you use the same hair straightener on finer hair types, it will lead to damage or even burning.

For a more detailed discussion on hair types and specific guidelines on choosing the right electronic flat iron, you may visit this link

In the next section, specific suggestions are carefully handpicked from best rated flat irons in the market. Read on and explore the best flat iron for your hair type:

Type 1 Fine Hair

As mentioned earlier, it is easier for fine hair to acquire damage from constantly getting exposed to heat. You must veer away from straighteners that only have one level of heat setting. Multiple settings allow you to pick the appropriate heat level. Fine hair needs less heat, making it the easiest to straighten.

Below are different products in the market that are proven to efficiently manage straightening fine hair without making it weaker or thinner due to daily regular use.
