How to Protect Your Natural Hair from Chlorine Damage

Summer days are incomplete without spending time swimming. It’s a fun activity for your friends and family. Swimming pools, however, are maintained with one substance that can wreak havoc on your hair: chlorine.

What Is Chlorine?

Chlorine is a chemical disinfectant dissolved in pool water to kill bacteria. It protects swimmers from diseases and infections, keeping the water safe for swimming. Without chlorine, you’d end up swimming in a filthy pool, which, of course, isn’t very appealing.

Chlorine isn’t safe for your hair though. It dries out your hair shaft, which makes the hair coarse and prone to breakage. In addition, it removes the sebum, which also causes the strands to crack and dry out. As a result, your hair becomes brittle and frizzy, which will lead to breakage, split ends, and loss of shine.

The longer you leave chlorine on your hair, the bigger the harm it brings. And so, your hair should be protected to shield it from possible damage.

Dealing With Chlorine Damage

Don’t let the chlorine take the fun out of swimming and summer time. Let chlorine be harsh on bacteria but not on your hair. Here are some steps you could take to protect your hair from chlorine damage.

Wet your hair first before diving in

Your hair is like a sponge. It soaks in liquid fast. Wet hair is known to be less absorbent compared to dry hair. If your hair is wet and filled with clean water, then the chlorinated water will find it difficult to work its way into your hair and cause damage.

This is why no matter how excited you are, you still shouldn’t forget to wet your hair first before you dive in. It would have absorbed fresh water before it gets exposed to chlorine-treated water.

Take a shower to prepare your hair and skin for swimming. Both your skin and your hair will thank you.

Coat Hair with Olive (or Coconut) Oil

Coat your hair with oils such as olive oil and coconut oil prior to swimming. Oils prevent the chlorine from penetrating or even coming in contact with your hair. In addition, the oils reinforce the sebum produced by the scalp, so that even though the hair gets submerged in chlorinated water, it won’t be damaged.

Olive oil nourishes the hair; it’s natural so it won’t weigh the hair down. Coconut oil works as a great alternative because it not only nourishes the hair but also moisturizes it. A lot choose coconut oil rather than olive oil because the former is less expensive than the other.

Make sure to apply olive or coconut oil on your scalp and on the tips of your hair. If you can, cover your head as well, because oil can cook your hair under the heat of the sun.

Wear a Swimming Cap

A swimming cap also offers a layer of protection in addition to your hair care routine.

Wearing a swimming cap will shield your hair from chlorine and protect your hair from the elements. It will also keep your hair in place, which is perfect for those who are training or want to try a few good laps in the pool. Swim caps are reusable and cheap. Most of them may not block the water entirely, but they will slow down the process.

For further protection, apply deep conditioner (or oils as mentioned above) on your hair before wearing the cap. All of your hair should be tucked to make sure it will all be protected as you swim.

Hate Swim Caps? Style Hair Instead

It’s okay if you’re not fond of swimming caps; you can just pin your hair back or style your hair in a protective hairstyle such as braided pigtails or French braids to limit the hair’s exposure to chlorine as much as possible. This will also make the hair less prone to tangling and/or breakage.

You can also pull your hair up in a knot or in a tight bun. If you’re just by the pool, then you can just tie the hair in a ponytail or even use a scarf or hat to lessen the exposure.

Rinse Your Hair Immediately

Rinse your hair right away after swimming. If you can’t, just make sure to wash your hair with clean water as soon as possible. Not washing your hair immediately will make chlorine stick on your hair and harder to remove. You can even rinse your hair in between dips to the pool to help flush chlorine and other chemicals in your hair.

Use tepid tap water in washing your hair to remove as much chlorine as possible. This will prevent the residual chemicals and metals from building up and even help the hair keep its strength.

Other than rinsing your hair with water, you can also wash your hair with clarifying shampoo to get rid of chlorine. Clarifying shampoos deep cleanse to remove chemicals that are damaging to your hair. For best results, use a deep conditioner.

Kitchen Items to the Rescue

Sometimes washing your hair with water doesn’t do the trick when it comes to chlorine damage. In times like these, kitchen items such as baking soda and apple cider vinegar will come to your rescue.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one household item that you can use to remove chlorine buildup. It can absorb the chlorine, decrease its damage, and help in the hair’s recovery.

To prevent chlorine from damaging your hair further once you’re done swimming, sprinkle baking soda on your hair. Spread an amount that’s enough to cover your entire head. Use either club soda or non-chlorinated water to rinse it out.

Another alternative is to add baking soda to your usual shampoo. You can shampoo your hair as usual. This method can be done once a week.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Another item that you can use is apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is a natural clarifier that helps remove any buildup that chlorine and other commercial products have left behind. Vinegar can also restore the shine of your hair.

You can perform an apple cider vinegar rinse by mixing one part of apple cider vinegar with four parts of water. Pour the mixture over your hair and afterwards, rinse clean with cold water to seal hair cuticles and prevent further damage.

Eggs

Would you have thought eggs can also help you treat your chlorine-damaged hair? Eggs are largely made of protein, so they can strengthen the hair and make it smooth and shiny.

You can prepare an egg treatment for chlorine damage. Just mix a beaten egg with a tablespoon of honey and plain yogurt, and then pour it onto clean and damp hair. Massage the mixture onto the hair, and then wear a shower cap. Let sit for 30 minutes and rinse with cold water.

These – baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and eggs – are just some of the household items that you can use to treat chlorine damage. Using those items is an effective yet inexpensive way of managing hair that’s exposed to chlorine.

Be Gentle on Your Hair

Don’t be too harsh on your hair. Be gentle, which means that when drying, you should just be squeezing your hair rather than rubbing it using your towel.

Done swimming? Don’t reach out for that brush; choose the wide-toothed comb instead. Using a wide-toothed comb will easily untangle your hair without resulting to a “tug-of-war” between you and your hair. It loosens tension and reduces hair breakage.

As much as possible, don’t use a blow dryer to dry your hair. Doing so will even add to the damages that your hair is dealing with. It will also take away the moisture that you’ve tried so hard to restore.

Trim Your Hair

The ends of your hair often deal with the most damage. It’s also the first to show signs of dryness. If you’ve noticed that the chlorine damage on your hair is already way difficult to repair, then you might have to resort to “extreme” measures such as cutting your hair.

You don’t have to chop them off; having your hairstylist cut an inch or two is just fine. Your hair will grow back and look healthier. Following the tips given above will assure you that you don’t have to ever cut your hair out just because of chlorine damage.

DON’T LET CHLORINE WIN

The main task of chlorine is to make sure that swimming pools are clean and not infested by germs and bacteria. It does this task perfectly; however, it comes with unfortunate consequences to the hair and skin. These “unfortunate consequences” can be avoided, so you shouldn’t stay away from swimming and spending time by the pool.

Swimming is a healthy activity and is a form of exercise; it’s also a good way to unwind. Don’t let chlorine spoil your plans of having fun. So long as you’re going to take note of the steps given here in protecting your hair from chlorine damage, then you’ll be just fine.

4 Ways to Hydrate Hair After Bleaching

To settle the debate once and for all, yes, bleaching will damage your hair. Bleaching is the process of chemically removing the melanin content in the hair to lighten hair by up to eight shades. Bleach has ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and alkaline, which cause the hair to swell and the cuticles to open up. When that happens, the hair cortex loses its protective layer, leaving the hair open to damages like dryness, split ends and breakage.

But don’t fret. Whether you had a botched bleach job or just need to do some post-bleach hair care stat, you can still get the hair of your dreams by doing one simple trick: hydrating.

What is hydrating?

Hydrating is the process of repairing hair from the inside. Hydrating products are made from humectants, which are substances that allow for the retention and increase of moisture. The proteins and amino acids in the humectants make the hair more porous so that it can absorb more nutrients.

Hydrating should not be confused with moisturizing. While hydrates fix hair from the inside, moisture fixes strands from the outside. Moisturizing is the process of coating the hair with oils, serums, extracts, or butters to seal in moisture. And although hydrating and moisturizing go hand in hand, this article focuses on the benefits of hydrating and proper bleach aftercare.

What are the benefits of hydrating?

Because hydrating focuses on the hair’s holistic health, its benefits are not just superficial. The many benefits of hydrating are as follows:

It thoroughly cleans the scalp, removing stubborn oil, dirt, and grime.
It unclogs the pores in the face and scalp, reducing acne, pimples, and skin imperfections.
It treats dandruff and removes dead skin.
It strengthens the strands, making them less prone to breakage and split ends.
It nourishes the roots, reducing the likelihood of baldness.
It thickens the hair, restoring volume and integrity.
It makes hair more manageable, reducing frizz, static, and tangles.

Here are four ways you can hydrate your hair:

1.   Learn your products.

Bleaching is a harsh process that uses harsh chemicals. Immediately after you get your hair bleached, you have to start treating it. This goes without saying, but if you’re going blonde, you have to know your hair products. The following is a crash course on products that encourage hydration and moisturization.

First things first: You have to be mindful about the ingredients in your hair products. When shopping, check the label and steer clear of products that contain ingredients like sulfate, mineral oil, chlorine, or formaldehyde.

There's no question about it: You will need conditioner — lots and lots of conditioner. Bleaching is an intensely dehydrating process, so bleaching aftercare is about putting the hydration back on. The best way to do this is by using deep conditioner. Think of deep conditioner as hair food. It contains vitamins and minerals necessary for hair repair, growth, shine, and luster.

To use, apply deep conditioner from root to tip, then massage it into your scalp. Cover your head with a shower cap, then turn on the hair dryer on low heat. Refer to the product's instructions to see how long you should use it before rinsing off with water.

Alternatively, if you're wary of using chemicals to treat chemical damage, you can make deep conditioner using all-natural ingredients. A typical homemade deep conditioner includes hydrating, moisturizing, and soothing ingredients like natural oils, extracts, butter, and even certain foodstuffs.

There is some debate on the issue of using shampoo after bleaching. On one hand, because bleaching is a chemical process, removing the remaining chemicals is necessary for scalp health. On the other hand, because bleaching dries the hair and shampoo removes the hair's natural oils, using shampoo may cause further damage. Luckily, there's a middle ground: purple shampoo.

Purple shampoo is effective for cleaning, hydrating, moisturizing, and volumizing. It also helps with color correction by dialing down the yellow tone so your bleach job doesn't come off as straw-like.

Another hydrating product you can use is oil. Oil hydrates the hair, makes it shiny, and tames frizz. The good thing about oil is that it's organic, so you don't have to worry about damaging chemical components.

You can use olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, or shea oil. Just put a pea-sized amount in your palms, then rub your hands. Apply the oil to your hair, starting from root to tip. Repeat daily after showering.

While oil is made from plant extracts, serum is made from a high-concentration combination of antioxidants, vitamins, and glycolic acids. These ingredients aim to treat the strands, scalp, and the underlying layer of skin. Hair serum coats the hair and protects it from pollutants like heat, dirt, grime, and sweat.

Hair serum should only be used on the days that you wash your hair with shampoo. After washing, pat your hair dry with a towel, then put 2-3 drops of the serum in your palms. Work your way up from tip to root, then massage into the scalp.

A heat protectant, as the name suggests, is your hair’s line of defense against an army of heated styling tools. It is a combination of water, vitamins, minerals, and natural oils that prevent thermal damage.

After washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, pat it dry with a towel. To apply the heat protection spray, hold the bottle a few inches away from your hair, spray 2-3 times, and voila! You can now use a dryer, straightener, or curler without fear of damage.

Yes, you can (and should) use sunscreen on your hair. Hair sunscreen locks in the moisture from other hair products and gives an added layer of protection against harmful UV rays. It usually comes in the form of leave-in conditioner, which you can apply to dry hair before stepping out of the house.

If you are often outdoors and need a hassle-free way to hydrate your hair, try coconut water. It’s a natural hydrating cleanser that also protects against sun damage, tames frizzy hair, and reduces dandruff. Simply put it in a spray bottle, then spritz 2-3 times a day. Coconut water can also be used to rinse off shampoo and conditioner.

2. Avoid heat and chemicals.

Bleached hair is dry, brittle, and, most importantly, vulnerable. Needless to say, you should give your hair time to heal and avoid doing further damage. The most obvious and damaging culprits are heat and chemicals.

Refrain from using hair styling products such as blow dryer, straightener, and curler. However, if you absolutely have to use these tools, at least apply heat-protectant products beforehand. Alternatively, you can get creative and try heat-free styling techniques like headband curling, rolling, braiding, and scarfing.

Additionally, it’s recommended to postpone salon appointments like hair coloring, highlighting, straightening, relaxing, and perming. These treatments use harsh chemicals that will worsen your hair’s condition.

3. Take care of your hair.

If your hair is badly damaged, every little bit helps. Here are some tips on everyday hair care and styling to make sure that your strands are hydrated.

After a shower, pat your hair dry with a towel. Then, use your hands to work out the tangles. Wet hair is more prone to damage, so you should only brush your hair when it’s dry.
As mentioned, heat isn’t good for the hair. This also applies to water —so instead of using hot water, go with cold or lukewarm H2O.
Use a paddle hairbrush or a wide-toothed comb. If your hair is extremely prone to breakage, use a brush with soft bristles. Start brushing from the bottom, then gently work your way up.
Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils and moisture, so you should only wash your hair with mild shampoo twice a week. Avoid shampoo that’s labeled “deep cleansing”. If your scalp gets greasy and oily on the in-between days, use dry shampoo.
Sometimes, your hair’s greatest enemy is the weather. Wind, rain, temperature, and humidity can affect the level of moisture in your hair — in short, a bad weather makes for a bad hair day. Limit the damage by covering your hair with a shawl or scarf.

4. Take care of your body.

Last, but not least: Beauty may be skin-deep, but health is not. What you eat affects your skin, scalp, and hair. Here are some dietary changes you can make so that your lifestyle supports your hairstyle.

Hair is made of protein, and so it needs protein for growth and repair. Modify your diet to include protein-rich food, such as eggs, chicken, fish, nuts, and legumes.
Iron deficiency can make hair look dull and lifeless. Add iron to your diet by adding red meat, lentils, and green and leafy vegetables.
Vitamin C not only helps facilitate the body’s absorption of iron; it also helps build collagen. Citrus fruits, broccoli, and tomato are great sources of vitamin C.

Bleaching may be high-maintenance, high-effort, and high-risk, but if done correctly, it’s also high-reward. Every type of hair is safe to bleach, as long as you know how to treat it afterwards. To give your bleached hair the best shine, always remember the four H’s: hydration, (no) heat, hair care, and health.

Tips for Taking Care of the Hair when Swimming

Now that you know the best swimming caps to help protect your hair, here are more tips:

Rinse your hair before and after swimming

Some people skip rinsing of the hair before dipping in the pool. But this part is important. The regular water used for rinsing acts as a barrier against the chlorine. This, in turn, will reduce its effects on hair. For extra protection, you could also use a leave-on conditioner for wet hair. After swimming, rinse, shampoo and condition your hair. This will get rid of the harmful chemicals you got from swimming. Dry your hair after and make sure that all the chemicals were rinsed through.

Opt for oil treatment

Put olive oil in your hair before swimming. This will help prevent drying. But make sure that your hair is covered when you go out in the sun. The oil can make your hair dryer when exposed to heat. Wear swim cap on top of the olive oil filled hair for better protection.

Take care of your hair outside the water

Swimming can indeed damage the hair when not protected. But you still must take care of your hair out of the pool. Dipping in the water with dry hair will increase the chance of it being more damaged. Aside from that, prevention is better than cure. Make sure to treat your hair properly. You can go to your preferred salon regularly or research the internet for quick fixes. There are many DIY alternatives you can try to save your hair.

Always wear a swim cap

There are times when you get lazy and opt to just swim without a swim cap. But these caps are a must when swimming, especially if you regularly do so. They will keep your hair away from the water and fights of dryness. It will also help you avoid chlorine damaging. Other things that swim cap could help you is your performance in the water. Besides, it is also a beauty accessory. Just make sure that you choose the right cap for your head and hair size. You could also opt-in choosing the perfect design that fits your personality.

Conclusion

The hair is a person's crowning glory. It just makes sense to take care of it. And when swimming, this too could not be neglected. Take care of your hair and use a swim cap to protect it from damage.

Furthermore, essential oils were the main sources of perfume in India, Rome and Greece. Old civilizations in Mesopotamia also used machines to extract oils from plants.

Nowadays, plants containing essential oils and growing in specific parts of the world have made their name in the field of medicine.

What Impedes Hair Growth

You are probably dreaming of thick, shiny, strong and manageable hair. However, you get depressed when you notice that your hair doesn’t grow the way you want.

The reasons why hair stops growing or having problems growing naturally are as follows:

Unhealthy Scalp

Oil or other particles can clog the pores on your scalp. These prevent your hair from growing.

Using hair sprays and commercial shampoos can cause inflammation on the scalp. To add, not rinsing thoroughly can increase particle build-up on your scalp.

Hair Breakage

Human hair grows about half an inch monthly. Your hair may suffer from breakage because of bleaching, showering and brushing roughly. Therefore, it becomes brittle and dry. It appears that your hair stops growing if continuous hair breakage is happening.

Age

As you get older, your hair becomes weaker. It also sheds more often. Furthermore, oil production in your scalp slows down.

Genes

Genetic factors determine the color, density, texture and length of hair. Therefore, hereditary disorders can cause extreme hair fall and even baldness.

5 DIY Essential Oil Recipes for Damaged Hair

The use of essential oils dates back more than three thousand years ago. The Ebers papyrus, which was written approximately 1500 BCE, contains recipes and instructions on the use of fine oil as perfume and medicine. One of the common uses of essential oils is for hair care. Different essential oils benefit the hair in different ways.

What Causes Hair Damage?

Apart from the harsh sun and air pollution, you might be doing other damaging things to your hair. Here are some of them.

Frequent Washing – Just the act of wetting your hair makes it more susceptible to damage. When hair is wet, it becomes easier to break because of the swelling of the shaft. Adding shampoo to the act doesn’t help either. It can remove natural oils from your hair making it look dry and dull. Stripping oils from your scalp makes it flaky and prone to dandruff.

Brushing Your Wet Hair – As mentioned, wet hair is more prone to damage and breakage, which is why you should let your hair dry first before combing or brushing. If you must brush your hair while it’s still wet, be gentle. Excessive brushing can break or snap hair.

Towel Drying – Be gentle when drying your hair using a towel. Rubbing hair can damage the hair’s outermost layer called the cuticle. This will make your look fluffy or frizzy.

Blow Drying – The damage is even worse if you use the high heat setting of your blow dryer. High heat can dry up your hair abruptly because of water evaporation. Opt for the low heat or ‘air only’ setting.

Curling/Flat Iron – These devices are even more damaging to your hair than blow dryers. When used on wet hair, the heat causes water moisture to burst. This causes blisters on the hair cuticle which can be seen by using a microscope. Ironing dry hair, on the other hand, can cause hair cracking which can then lead to split ends.

Managing Damaged Hair Using Essential Oils

There are many factors that can contribute to hair damage. Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimize or even reverse it. One option is using essential oils. Here are 5 DIY essential oil recipes to help you manage your damaged hair.

1. Tea Tree Oil – Best Healing Oil

This is considered to be one of the most potent healing oil and it comes from Melaleuca alternifolia tree leaves. This tree is native to Australia. It is often used as antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic.

Tea tree oil is most effective in treating hair flakiness. Studies show that this essential oil is successful in managing seborrheic dermatitis and in general treatment of dandruff.

Tea tree oil also helps relieve psoriasis, as proven by a medical study done in 2012 and published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology. This is due to its anti-inflammatory properties. There are even studies showing that tea tree oil may also promote hair growth. Minoxidil, the only clinically accepted hair growth solution, becomes even more potent when combined with tea tree oil.

Ingredients:

Tea tree oil – 3 drops

Peppermint oil – 3 drops

Extra virgin olive oil – 1 tablespoon

Directions:

Combine the 3 oils mentioned above with a cup of warm water and mix well. Wash and shampoo your hair normally and rinse. Pour the mixture of water and oils and massage it into the scalp. Continue massaging for a few minutes allowing the mixture to be absorbed. Rinse it all off completely using a mild shampoo.

Storage:

Pure tea tree oil should be stored in a glass container, not plastic. The glass should also be dark. Store in a cool and dry place and keep away from sunlight to make it last longer.

2. Peppermint Oil – Invigorating and Refreshing

The healing benefits of this essential oil are enough to fill a whole book. Peppermint is synonymous to invigoration. And it does a lot for your hair, too!

Peppermint oil works great for either dry or greasy hair. The cooling effect leaves a pleasant tingle on your scalp. This is due to the increased blood flow to the applied area. Peppermint oil is also believed to open pores on your scalp. This promotes a balanced flow of natural oils. This action can help alleviate dandruff.

This oil has also been used for ages in treating lice infestation. A study published in 2007 by the Archives of Dermatological Research shows that when peppermint oil is combined with eucalyptus oil, the mixture becomes as effective as other commercial lice shampoo solutions.

Like tea tree oil, peppermint oil also shows promise in promoting hair regrowth. There was even a study published in 2014 that showed this oil to be more effective in growing hair than minoxidil.

Ingredients:

Peppermint oil - 2 to 3 drops

Carrier oil (almond, coconut, or jojoba) – 1 tablespoon.

Directions:

Mix the oils thoroughly. Wash and shampoo your hair normally. Pour in the mixture into your hair and massage it in deeply into your scalp. Leave it on for half an hour before washing it off with a mild shampoo. Repeat the process every day for 28 days.

Precaution:

Too much peppermint oil can cause a burning sensation, leaving your scalp irritated. Keep away from children and use only as directed.

Storage:

Peppermint oil loses its efficacy fast when exposed to light and heat. You need to store it in a dark glass container and keep it in a dark, cool, and dry place.

3. Lemon Oil – Best for Oily Hair

Lemon oil offers a variety of healing properties. Lemon oil works best when used on oily hair. The acids from lemon will help dry up and clarify that extra grease in your hair. Lemon has also been proven to have antimicrobial properties. Its essential oil is quite effective against fungus. The antiseptic effect helps cure dandruff and scalp acne.

Although lemon oil works exceptionally well on oily hair, it can be used as well to prevent and even treat flaky scalp. There is also some proof that this essential oil can be effective in clearing up lice and helping in stimulation of new hair growth.

Ingredients:

Lemon oil – 1 tablespoon

Olive oil – 2 tablespoons

Castor oil – ½ tablespoon

Directions:

Combine all three oils in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
Before sleeping, apply this mixture all over the hair by massaging it into the scalp for 10 to 15 minutes after it is absorbed.
Leave the mixture on your hair overnight.
Wash it off the following day using an herbal shampoo.
Do this process once a week.

The vitamins and fatty acids from olive oil condition and nourish your hair. Castor oil makes each hair strand stronger and thicker. Lemon oil boosts hair growth.

Storage:

Citrus fruit oils, like lemon oil are more prone to oxidation than the other oils mentioned above. Oxidation is more significant in higher temperatures and when the essential oil is exposed to air. Keeping it in a dark glass container and refrigerated is the best way to keep the lemon oil’s efficacy.

4. Lavender Oil

Not all lavender oils are created equally. To get the most benefits, make sure that you only use top quality Lavendula angustifolia plant extract.

Lavender oil is more known as aromatic oil and is widely used in aromatherapy because of its relaxing scent that can help effectively reduce stress and anxiety, but the benefits of this essential oil don’t stop there. Lavender oil can be used on any type of hair be it flaky, dry, oily, or normal.

Its natural healing properties are believed to improve scalp dryness and circulation, prevent hair loss, and promote hair growth. Lavender also helps maintain the balance of natural oils on your scalp and relieve itchiness. The antifungal and antiseptic properties are effective against scalp acne and dandruff.

A study done in 2016 shows that lavender oil controls dandruff, keeps hair shiny, and conditions the hair. When tested on mice, significant hair growth was also observed on areas where the essential oil was applied.

Ingredients:

Lavender oil – 8 drops

Coconut oil – 2 tablespoons

Directions:

Combine the oils in a small bowl and mix thoroughly.
Before sleeping, massage the oil mixture into your scalp for 10 to 15 minutes, or until it is completely absorbed.
Leave it on your hair overnight by covering with a scarf.
Wash in the morning with a mild shampoo.

Storage:

Because most of the benefits of lavender oil come from its essence, keeping the container air tight is a must. Also keep it away from light and heat.

5. Rosemary Oil

Those who cook might be familiar with the distinctive smell of rosemary. The herb itself goes well with meat roasts and grilled vegetables. The oil, distilled from rosemary leaves, is an effective healing oil because of the antioxidants contained in it.

Rosemary oil works well for all types of hair. It helps balance hair oils and also unclogs the pores on your scalp. Mixed with other oils, it becomes a potent dandruff remedy. A study published in WebMD shows that rosemary oil increases scalp circulation, improves hair growth, and stimulates hair roots.

Ingredients:

Rosemary oil – 12 to 15 drops

Carrier oil (coconut recommended) – 4 tablespoons

Directions:

Mix the two oils in a small bowl.
Lightly heat the mixture then cool.
Rub into the scalp and cover with a hot towel.
Leave it on your hair for half an hour then
Wash with a mild shampoo
Repeat the process once a week

Storage:

Storing rosemary oil is pretty much the same with the most common essential oils. The container should be airtight and kept out of direct light or stored in dark colored vials. This will ensure that the oil will remain effective for up to half a year.

Essential Oils That are Safe for Hair and Scalp Use

The scalp produces natural oil or sebum. This sebum protects the hair follicles by forming a shield over them while hydrating the scalp.  However, daily hair washing, heated styling tools, dead cells, dust, and wind exposure can strip off the sebum. Regular hair treatments using products with harsh chemicals also contribute to loss of sebum.

When there is not enough oil, your hair becomes frizzy and dry. The scalp becomes flaky and itchy. All these issues affect healthy hair growth. A poor diet also affects hair growth, producing thin and brittle hair.

What to do? Use essential oils.

Essential oils are compounds from the leaves, stems, flowers, fruits, barks, or rinds of plants. Some come from certain herbs.  These oils contain the plant’s flavor and scent or their “essence.” Every plant has a unique aroma and benefits.

These pure oils are extracted through mechanical pressing (cold pressing) or via distillation (steam). To extract essential oils from citrus fruit, the best method is through expression. It is the process of scraping or grating the peels to release the essential oil.

For scalp and hair treatment, use carrier oils to dilute their concentrated content. Some oils work best when blended with other essential oils. Other are powerful on their own. The best carrier oils for fine, thin hair are coconut, sunflower, olive, jojoba, almond, and grapeseed. For dry, thick coarse hair, the ideal carrier oils are avocado, rosehip, sesame, hemp, almond, and olive.

The general rule is to add 1% of essential oil to the base oil. You can follow any of these two options:

30-40 drops essential oil in 100 ml base oil
10-15 drops essential oil in 15 ml or 1 tablespoon of base oil

Scalp and Hair Benefits of Essential Oils:

Stimulate hair growth
Reduce hair thinning
Soothe dry, irritated scalp
Reduce oiliness
Increase sebum production
Stimulates blood circulation in the scalp

Treats dandruff and fungal infections
Balances scalp hormones
Makes hair shiny and healthy

10 Best Essential Oils and Their Benefits for Hair Care:

Can Premature Grey Hair Be Reversed?

Premature grey hair is a dilemma that can be experienced by some individuals early in their 20’s and 30’s. While getting a few strands of greys in your 20s is not quite unusual, others do tend to be more bothered by it. Some young people grow a whole clump of greys, while some might even grow a full-on head of grey and white hair.

As we all know, grey hair is often associated with aging. And for some young person, who is still very much conscious about their physical appearance, having grey hair can be both a shock and a cause of frustration. It can even lead to serious socio-emotional effects such as lack of confidence and self-consciousness.

Sometimes called steely, salt-and-pepper or silver hair, the exact cause of premature greying is still not known but various research points out that genetics, race, stress, smoking and environmental factors do play a considerable role.

Is it possible for individuals prone to graying hair to prevent or even reverse this occurrence? Is there a specific nutritional diet, supplement or topical solutions to greying hair?

Causes of Grey Hair

Premature graying of the hair, also called canities, can be due to many reasons. Scientists believe that a large factor for people having premature grey hair has a lot to do with genes. While many believe it may be due to stress, there have been no studies to prove it to be so. Individuals having grey hair in their 20’s and early 30’s are considered to be experiencing ‘premature’ graying.

Race

Studies have shown that a person’s race and ethnicity can become a factor for premature greying of hair. White people are more prone to having grey hair, usually in their mid 30’s. Asians usually start having grey hair late in their 30’s while African-Americans might begin to have it in their mid-40’s. But generally, you are considered to be undergoing ‘premature’ greying when you get it early on in your 20s no matter what your race is.

Health

Premature grey hair can be due to underlying health problems. There are some genetic and autoimmune conditions that can be directly linked to poor production of melanin in the hair follicles. This includes possible issues with the thyroid, pituitary glands, vitiligo, or anemia.

According to a 2008 research on the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, insufficient or excessive levels of thyroid hormones have a direct effect on the production of melanin pigment in the hair follicles. This means that those suffering from thyroid problems may likely experience having a few gray hairs.

Autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo, a skin and hair-related disorder that causes hyper-pigmentation, can also cause premature graying of hair because the cells responsible for producing the pigment is being attacked.

Nutritional deficiencies

Greying hair can also be linked to the body’s deficiency in vitamin B12, the amino acid phenylalanine and lack of protein-rich food in the diet. This however, can be reversed when the medical problem is addressed accordingly.

Smoking

There is yet to be concrete medical research done on the relation between smoking and premature graying. However, a preliminary 2013 NCBI study revealed that a significant number of smokers showed signs of graying hair before the age of 30, as compared to non-smokers. Further studies need to be done to understand the direct relation of smoking and greying hair.

Stress

Experiencing high levels of stress will not cause you to have grey hair, as many seem to believe, but it can surely cause your hair to fall out. And when the hair grows back after several months, the pigment may not be as dark as it used to and it can eventually turn grey. This means that stress is just a contributing factor but not necessarily a direct cause for premature graying of hair.

Melanin

Grey hair occurs when the cells in the hair follicles stop producing melanin. For some people, melanocytes (color-producing cells) begin to slow down the production of melanin (pigment that provides color) hence turning their hair white. When the hair follicles are not getting enough melanin that provides its natural color, it turns into dry and brittle grey hair. As the body ages, it can also produce naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide that bleaches the hair, turning its color to grey or white.

According to a July 2017 article by Sharon Griffin in Livestrong.com, melanin production can be increased to restore the vitality and natural color of the hair. This can be done by adding more protein and seafood to the daily diet as well as living a stress-free lifestyle.

Can It Be Reversed?

Unfortunately, plucking out those grey hairs won’t keep it from coming back. It is also just a myth that when you pluck one out, several more will grow back.

First of all, greying hair is not a sign of a serious physical or medical problem. It is more of an aesthetic dilemma for most people who have it. Avoiding the causes of premature graying mentioned earlier in the article can also contribute to reversing the premature greying of hair. This includes increasing your intake of protein rich foods, supplementing the body with vitamin b12, and avoiding high levels of stress and smoking. But here are more specific solutions that can be explored.

Topical solution

Scientists may have found a way to reverse graying hair without using dyes or surgery. A research published in The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal reveals that graying hair may soon be cured using a newly developed sun-activated compound.

A group of scientists from the Netherlands and Germany is working on a topical solution that may help reverse the inside-out bleaching of hair. The sunlight-activated compound works through the ‘modified pseudocatalase’ which stops the process of graying hair. It is said to be the same topical solution that also works for those suffering from hyper-pigmentation of the skin such as seen in the skin condition vitiligo.

The said topical solution is yet to be released in the market. However, scientists are certainly excited about the fact that there is now a potential solution that gets to the root of the problem and could also improve the quality of life for those suffering from low levels of confidence due to hair and skin pigmentation issues.

Supplements

Studies done by David Satchell, a Holistic Trichologist, claims that supplementing with the antioxidant resveratrol and enzymes protease, amylase and lipase can help reverse the onset of grey hair naturally. He claims that many of his clients who took the recommended dosage for the supplements has shown improvement in regaining their natural hair color.

Catalase

Another research found that the decline in catalase enzyme production is the main culprit for graying hair. Without catalase, the hair follicles do not produce melanin, which gives the hair its natural color.

The hair also produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. The catalase is what converts this hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Without it, the hair follicles start producing too much hydrogen peroxide, thereby bleaching the hair from inside-out and drying it out.

There are supplements available to replace the lost catalase. The problem is that it is digested too fast by the body—long before it even reaches the parts where it is needed. Another alternative way is to simply help the body produce enough catalase by increasing intake of copper, zinc, selenium and manganese. These can be taken as vitamin and mineral supplements or in food rich in such building blocks.

Coconut oil

It seems like coconut oil does more than just make the hair follicles soft and shiny, it also helps reverse greying hair. The caprylic acids found in coconut oil are powerful disinfectants and mini antioxidants that can deeply penetrate into the hair shafts.  For a more effective therapy treatment, apply the coconut oil in the hair and leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes before washing it out. For a more intense treatment, massage into hair and scalp, wrap in a towel and leave on overnight. Coconut oil also addresses other hair and scalp issues such as balding, dandruff and even removing lice.

Amla

Amla is known in the Ayurvedic circles as a super food for the hair. The amla fruit is a powerful source of vitamin C and antioxidants that rejuvenates the body and conditions the skin and the hair. Amla is said to strengthen the hair follicles and fight the free radicals that causes the greying of hair. Amla is also used as a component of natural hair dyes. It helps renew the hair’s pigmentation making it darker and the hair looking thicker.

How To Avoid Grey Hair

It seems that there is no real way to avoid grey hair. Genetically, people are predisposed to acquire it as part of aging. Premature graying however, can be avoided by eating more protein-rich foods, seafood, enzyme supplements, and taking more Vitamin B12.

Some individuals who are already experiencing premature greying can resort to hair products to hide or conceal the gray spots. There are many coloring techniques to consider, from full color coverage to highlights. Others however, choose to embrace their natural ‘salt and pepper’ look and just wear it with style and confidence. There are plenty of people who actually manage to look cooler and more youthful by simply turning what is often seen as a flaw into a more interesting aesthetic feature about themselves.

In Closing

While it is important to address socio-emotional stress and anxieties related to premature greying hair, it is also important to look into any possible health issues associated with it. As we’ve said, there might be underlying health concerns that need to be addresses—but once you’ve been cleared of that, go ahead and style your locks however you wish!
