Whatever your reason is for being here, there’s one thing you should know: without direction, natural hair care can be time-consuming. And this is why we have this short read.

Natural Hair and the Benefits of Keeping a Natural Hair Care Regimen

The natural hair movement, which started during the 2000s, was an important era for women. Since this movement started, it has encouraged millions to embrace their natural hair. It has changed not only the way of life of millions; it has also changed the way people look and take care of their hair. And with more and more celebrities and media personalities rocking their natural hair, natural hair care is being brought closer and closer to home.

You’re not going to get rid of hair care products completely when you’re taking care of natural hair. You just have to find better products that are better suited to taking care of your natural hair. So, why should you bother? Is there any benefit to keeping a natural hair care regimen? Here are some of the benefits of rocking your natural hair:

You don’t have to check the weather every day to see if rain or humidity can mess up your hair.
You don’t have to worry about sweat ruining your hair so you can run, jog, exercise or go to the gym as much as you like.
You get to swim again without the need for swimming caps!
You get to look gorgeously beautiful hair without having to spend a single dime at the salon.
You can practice different looks and with every inch comes more styling possibilities.
You have a conversation starter for a hair!
You save lots of valuable time and money when you don’t feel the need to relax, straighten or chemically treat your hair.

The Basics of Building a Natural Hair Care Regimen

After learning the benefits of keeping your hair natural, you feel you’re now ready to make you own hair care regimen. So, here’s some easy-to-follow do’s and don’ts of how to build an effective natural hair care regimen:

Do know your hair and your goals

For the most part, when people talk about natural hair, they’re actually referring to untreated, and wavy, curly or kinky hair. Natural hair is classified into three types – type 2 hair is wavy, type 3 hair is curly, and type 4 hair is coily. Under these main types are three sub-types. Usually, these sub-types just determine the looseness or the tightness of the waves, curls and coils.

The difference between all these colors, textures, and types of hair require different maintenance routines and products, and this is why it’s important to know your hair and what you want to do with your hair. Knowing what your hair goals are can help you choose the right hair products and hair tools.

Do stop if it’s not working

It can take about 1-2 months before you can reap the benefits of a new hair care product. If you notice little to no changes in your hair, it could be that your new hair care regimen isn’t working for you. It’s up to you to decide when you’re calling it quits with a hair care routine, but it’s usually recommended to give your hair some time to adjust.

If you’re noticing negative side effects, however, there’s no need to wait for a month or two before you ditch whatever new product or tool you’ve introduced to your hair care routine.

Do keep a simple regimen

What good is a good hair care regimen if you can’t keep up with it? Settle for a routine that’s simple. The most important criteria to be met are that it should actually work for you and for your schedule.

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of hair care products marketed towards women with natural hair. You’re going to have to cleanse, condition, moisturize, nourish and style your hair, and you might have to use different products for all these parts of your routine.

The trick here is using as few products as possible while still getting the same great results.

Do be gentle

Many people seem to think that larger, curlier hair is stronger than straight, flat hair. It’s not true. Oils from the scalp can easily make their way through straight hair, giving the hair the nourishment they need. This is why you can brush and style straight hair without having to worry too much about hair damage. Straighter hair also grows longer faster because of this nourishment from the scalp’s natural sebum.

The tighter the coils and curls, the more susceptible they are to damage. Be gentle with your natural hair. Don’t shampoo too often and use detangling conditioners. Use wider-toothed combs and don’t rush with the brush. Be careful with heat treatments, and never use temperatures over 350° F. Opt for sulfate-free, alcohol-free, and paraben-free products that won’t dry your hair and irritate your scalp.

Don’t copy another person’s hair care regimen

Just because it looks like you have the same hair doesn’t mean you have the same hair. It doesn’t work that way. Even if you do have the same hair type, you may not have the same skin type. The products that work for another woman may be products that could give you an allergic reaction.

Your lifestyle may be different as well. You could be spending most of your time in an office, while the other person spends most of their time in field work. All these are the reasons why hair analysis is a must before you even begin to make a hair care routine.

Don’t focus on the products

Don’t limit your search to popular brands and focus on finding the right kind of hair care products instead. Make sure that you’re using products and tools that work for your hair type. Whenever you’re looking to try a new product, just make sure that they’re safe and don’t dry your hair out.

12 Ways You Are Damaging Your Hair

Color, highlights, extensions, perms: in your quest to become beautiful, you might be sacrificing your hair. You’ll find a list of ways and habits that might be damaging your hair.

To better understand your hair, here is a quick discussion on the anatomy of the hair. The hair is fiber, similar to wool. It is tightly bundled in the middle.

The hair has three layers:

        Medulla – inner fiber

        Cortex – surrounds the medulla

        Cuticle – protective outer layer

Your hair grows out of a follicle about ¼ inch every month. It continues to grow for up to 6 years, after which hair falls out to make way for a new hair. This is the natural cycle for hair growth. The length of your hair depends on how long its growing cycle lasts. For instance, if it’s just 2 years instead of 6, your hair will peak at a shorter length. This is the same with the thickness of the hair – hair grows out of large follicles; smaller follicles produce thinner hair.

Over styling damages the cuticle. The inner core is exposed, which makes your hair dull and dry.

What are the causes of hair damage?

Bleaching – Chemicals penetrate the hair during bleaching. It removes the hair’s natural pigment. Bleaching changes the structure of your hair, making it more susceptible to damage. The process weakens the hair. Blow drying and constant styling will result to breakage, split ends, and dull hair.

Perming – This is a process that uses chemicals to either straighten or curl the hair. Perming breaks the inner bonds of your hair and then re-forms them together in a totally different way. It also weakens the hair, resulting to dullness. Constant perming renders the hair brittle and dry, whether curly or straight. It robs the hair of its natural moisture.

Hair coloring and highlights – While semi-permanent dyes and highlights are not as damaging as the chemicals used in bleaching and perming, they still have damaging effects on your hair. The process will likewise create changes in the hair’s inner structure, giving you dry, coarse hair. It gets worst when you frequently color the hair to hide gray hair.

Frequent use of blow dryer and straightening iron – Applying heat creates temporary changes to the hydrogen bonds that hold the hair together. Regular blow drying and straightening the hair with flat iron results in dry, dull hair. The temporary changes will eventually lead to more permanent damage if you use either of these styling tools every day.

Blow drying is bad enough, but blow drying your hair when its still dripping wet is worse. It is best to air-dry your hair a little before applying heat. Blot (never rub) your wet hair with a towel, it would even be better if you have a microfiber towel.

An important note on blow-drying: do not “stretch” your hair with a brush as you blow-dry because it results in further breakage and split ends. Replace your big, round hairbrush for one that has smooth, synthetic bristles. Also, maintain at least a 2-inch distance between your hair and the nozzle of the blow dryer.

Frequently tying hair (ponytails) and braiding – When hair is always pulled back tightly into ponytails or in braids, the hair strands will break. Permanent damage may result if this kind of styling is done every day. Putting wet hair into ponytails is more damaging as it results in weak and fragile hair strands.

Too much hair brushing – One popular myth that you might have heard from your mom is to brush your hair 100 times before going to bed. Doing so gives you soft and shiny hair, they’d say. But, this is just a myth and it has no scientific basis. Over brushing actually causes breakage and split ends. Too much brushing actually causes friction that the hair cannot handle.

Using cheap combs and brushes does not help as well. These may cause tangles and snags that would be difficult to untangle which may result to split ends and broken hair.

Too much use of shampoo – The main purpose of washing the hair and shampooing it to remove oil and dirt buildup on the hair and cleanse the scalp. However, improper washing may wash away the natural moisture of the hair resulting to dryness and coarseness. The use of shampoo to cleanse your hair and scalp is good practice, and it is backed by research and studies. But, too much of a good thing won’t benefit your hair.

Hair experts do not recommend shampooing the hair every day, a good practice would be twice a week only.

The use of hair conditioner is recommended every day, though. If you can’t go or don’t have the budget to get regular treatments at a salon regularly, you can just get a good deep conditioner. Your daily conditioner may be beneficial but once in a while you should use deep conditioner, which is more concentrated and leaves behind a smoothing film on the hair that won’t wash off for days.

Adding extensions and weaves – Hair extensions and weaves have the same effect on the hair like ponytails and braids. Constant use of extensions and weaves will result in brittleness and breakage. If you begin to feel discomfort or the scalp begins to hurt, it means that the hair roots are subjected to too much pressure. The best remedy is to keep it loose or just have the patience to grow your hair naturally rather than opting for instant length.

Using cotton pillowcases – You better believe it your cotton pillowcase might be one of the causes why you’re experiencing hair breakage. There is friction between your hair and the cotton fabric while you sleep. You might be better off if you use a pillowcase in satin or silk as it may cut down the snagging while you sleep.

Towel-drying – may not be a good practice. Never rub the towel against your hair to dry it, instead dab (blot) the hair with it. Also, ditch the practice of bundling the towel up as a turban to dry your hair. Invest in a good-quality microfiber towel. Or you can simply use an old but soft T-shirt or a paper towel because of are more absorbent and safer to use to your hair.

Skipping your regular hair cut schedules – Even if you are trying to grow your hair long, it is still a good practice to go on regular haircuts to keep hair healthy. Remember that not getting a haircut will not prevent split ends and breakage, so, get your hair trimmed regularly.

Unhealthy eating habits – Your hair needs protein to keep it strong and healthy. It also helps repair the weak spots in the hair shaft, preventing breakage. However, too much protein may cause brittleness and too much moisture on the hair will make hair strands too flexible. So, it is important that everything you eat is in the right balance.

Correcting the Damage

Here is an easy DIY recipe to help repair your hair damaged by bleaching. You can use this as conditioner twice a week or as needed.

Coconut Oil and Beer Hair Mask

Ingredients:

½ cup brewed breed (made from hops, take note that commercial beers have chemicals and additives that may not be beneficial to your hair)
½ cup coconut oil

Procedure:

In a mixing bowl, pour the brewed beer and let it sit until it is de-carbonated.
When beer is ready you can add in the coconut oil. Mix. (It is okay if the beer and coconut does not mix well. There is no emulsifier, but it’s fine.)
Apply the beer and coconut oil mixture to your hair starting from the ends to the roots.
Massage gently and leave it on for at least 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, wash with shampoo and rinse thoroughly with cool water.

Beer is definitely not your typical ingredient to make a hair mask. You might even think it is not the most glamorous thing to use on your hair. However, beer contains malt and hops that are rich in proteins. Beer is an unlikely ingredient that will give your hair the nourishing it needs to correct the damages caused by repeated hair bleaching.

Additionally, beer contains some maltose and sucrose sugars that will help tighten the cuticles of the hair. Through constant use, it will bring back the natural shine of the hair.

Coconut oil has long been used to a lot of things and is normally used to keep hair healthy. Coconut oil helps strengthen the hair and renew its vitality, in addition to keeping it moisturized.

You’ll find additional DIY recipes here, which are easy to prepare and use.

The hair is one of the first things that other people see. It adds to one’s overall beauty, hence, a lot of people, especially women, spend time and money to make the hair more beautiful. However, it is not enough to make it beautiful, you also have to ensure that the hair is healthy, and we hope that this article has helped you in that aspect.

How Can I Moisturize My Hair Naturally?

While we all aspire to have rich, lustrous hair, there are moments when we simply cannot do anything to avoid a bad hair day.

Watching those enviable models’ hair on TV ads, one would wonder if it is real. Can you really achieve that kind of effect on your hair?

The answer is yes.

Common hair problems

Is your hair healthy?

You can easily answer this question if you know how to spot the most common hair problems and their symptoms.

Spilt ends. This hair problem is very common and caused by dryness and brittleness. Once your hair becomes dry and brittle, it damages your hair cuticles, resulting to split ends. Early symptoms of split ends are knots and tangles when combing.
Limp and dull hair. Your hair becomes limp and lifeless if you do not rinse off hair products residue properly. The kind of food you eat can also contribute in your hair’s lack of shine and moisture. You can detect limp, dull hair when you find your hair feeling heavy and sticky.
Dry and brittle hair. This hair problem can lead to other bigger hair problems like split ends and dandruff. Dry hair is often tangled and spongy. Knots and tangles are among the early symptoms of dry hair.
Grey hair usually occurs as you age, but exposure chemicals, heat, dirt and smoke can damage and cause your hair to turn gray.
Hair loss or falling hair may occur due to chemical-based hair products and improper care of your scalp.

These hair problems commonly occur when your hair has lost its natural moisture, and becomes dehydrated.

Keeping your hair healthy

Frequent changes in hairstyle has become synonymous with fashion. But, with it comes an influx of hair problems.

However, it need not be a problem if you follow some simple hair care tips to keep your hair healthy

Regular wash. Regularly wash your hair and do it properly. Massage your hair from roots to tips to wash off all the chemicals and styling aid products from your hair.
Use products that have organic ingredients. Avoid using chemical based ingredients, as these are mostly non-water soluble and leave residue on your hair.
Minimize heat damage. Set your blow dryer on low heat when drying your hair.
Get a regular trim. Getting a regular trim keeps the tips of your hair from splitting.
Eat the right food. To help keep the natural moisture and protein in your hair, eat food that are rich in protein, minerals and vitamins.
Pamper your hair. If you do not need to style your hair, and you can get away with a natural look, do it. Give your hair a break, and let it breathe.

Keeping your hair’s natural moisture

The hair, like the skin, has a natural moisture that keeps it hydrated and pliant.

The natural moisture of the hair combines with the natural protein found in the hair strand to keep it shiny and healthy.

Lack of moisture turns the hair dry, dull and brittle.

Can the hair get over moisturized?

Unfortunately, yes.

Over moisturizing can cause fatigue to your hair, and eventually cause it to break and get damaged.

You need to strike a balance between moisture and protein to retain your hair’s elasticity.

Is protein more important than moisture?

Your hair needs both, and neither is more important than the other.

You do not need to visit the salon to find out which one your hair needs more.

Check how your hair feels. As a general rule, limp, sticky and stringy hair lacks protein, while the opposite means it has too much protein. Dry, tangled, and brittle hair lacks moisture, while soft hair that refuses to be styled and is prone to breaking has too much moisture.

To know if your hair has the proper balance level of moisture and protein, perform a hair strand test.

Pull a strand of your hair and wet it with water. Gently stretch the strand. A hair with balanced moisture and protein level will stretch and return to its natural length, and not break.

What causes hair to lack moisture?

Genes determine the color, thickness and texture of your hair, but it is not the reason why your hair becomes dry, dull and limp.

Improper care contributes largely on the state of your hair. Frequent styling and use of hair styling products can affect the health of your hair, causing it to lose its natural moisture.
Prolonged exposure to heat through devices like blow dryers can also cause your hair to become dry and brittle.
Hair product build-up can also cause your hair to lose its natural volume and turn limp. Hair products like shampoo and conditioner can leave residue that will build up in your scalp, and eventually cause the start of dandruff. Non-water soluble hair products and heavy oiled products do not wash off easily, and can cause a build-up on your hair.
The food you eat also contributes to the nutrients that you need to retain the shine and moisture in your hair.
Continuous use of chemical based hair products can easily damage your hair.
Using the wrong moisturizer. Many people have the mistaken belief that oil moisturizes the hair because it makes dry hair soft. Water is what gives moisture to your hair, but water evaporates and dries. Oil can seal the water in and keep the moisture in your hair.

Keeping the moisture in

Once you have a good hair regimen going, it will be a breeze to maintain moisture in your hair.

Here are some tips on how you can lock in moisture in your hair:

Use a moisturizer that has water as one of its base ingredients. Remember that water naturally rehydrates your hair.
Keep the moisture in. Use avocado oil or castor oil to lock the moisture in your hair.
Keep the heat away from your hair, especially during summer when the heat is more intense. Wear a hat to keep the sun off your hair and try drying your hair naturally without the aid of a blow dryer
Eat food that is rich in protein and minerals.
Do not over moisturize. Try to maintain a balance of protein and moisture in your hair to keep it healthy, strong and shiny.

Choose organic or natural hair moisturizer

To keep your hair looking shiny and healthy, avoid chemical-based hair products.

No matter how good your hair regimen is, constant exposure to hair products that are heavy in chemicals and alcohol will eventually damage your hair.

Top three benefits of using organic products are:

The organic ingredients naturally stimulate the hair follicles to promote hair growth.
The minerals and natural oils of organic ingredients are infused in the hair follicles thus, maintaining the hair’s natural moisture.
Organic is safe. The natural ingredients of organic hair products suit all skin types, so they are non-allergenic.

Organic is expensive, you might say.

Not necessarily. You can make your own hair care product using organic ingredients.

Here is a quick list of the best natural ingredients you can use (and find in your kitchen) to keep your hair’s natural moisture:

Flaxseed oil mix with water and sunflower oil is a good spritz mix that you can use when your hair feels dry.
Banana mixed with almond oil mask applied on hair will help lock moisture in, and maintain your hair’s elasticity.
Fresh egg and olive oil mix applied to your hair for an hour not just locks moisture, but gives your hair extra shine
Apple cider mixed with water as hair rinse adds moisture and seals the moisture in.
Essential oil infused shea butter helps hydrate your hair, especially frizzy hair.
Another good hydrating spritz is Aloe Vera mixed with coconut oil, vitamin E oil and lavender essential oil. It will also leave your hair looking super shiny.

You can find many DIY hair care recipes on the internet. The recipes are easy to follow and would cost you a lot less than if you buy a ready to use product.

The Modern Rules of Dry Scalp

You may have experienced wearing a black shirt and having it covered in small white flakes as if it’s snowing. If you’ve noticed this recently, you may be suffering from dandruff.

Dandruff is not the condition itself. Rather, it is the symptom of an underlying condition, which is dry scalp. Before we talk about the things you can do to prevent and cure dry scalp, let us first try to understand what dry scalp is, how it starts, and what triggers the skin to have this condition.

What Is Dry Scalp?

Dandruff flakes are composed of dead skin cells. These skin cells fall from a dry scalp, especially if you scratch. A lot of people think that dandruff is just caused by dry scalp, and that having “dry scalp” is due to poor hair product choices and routines. However, that has never been the case. Dry scalp is caused by a lot of conditions. Here are the most common reasons why people have dry scalp:

Eating foods that are high in salt content. Salt, like alcohol, dehydrates the skin. This condition leads to skin flaking.
Excessive alcohol drinking. Alcohol is known for its ability to dry the skin. Therefore, an excessive amount of alcohol in your body will negatively affect the quality of your skin, causing it to dehydrate, and thus itch and produce dandruff.
Dry scalp can be inherited from your family. If you have parents, grandparents, or siblings who have dry scalp, chances are great that you have one, too.
Hormonal changes. Even though dry scalp happens at any age, it is most frequently observed in teenagers. During adolescence, the body undergoes significant hormonal changes, which in turn cause side effects on the skin - from the extremely common teenage acne to dry skin.
Lack of nutrients. Nutrients such as vitamin B and fatty acids are necessary in keeping the skin healthy. A diet that lacks these vitamins will negatively affect the skin.
Stress affects a person’s hormones much like how hormonal changes during puberty do. High stress levels are associated with a suppressed immune system, low sex drive, and skin oversensitivity, which leads to dry scalp.
Weather changes. The environment also plays a part in your skin’s health. Exposing your scalp to certain weather conditions such as too much direct sunlight or extremely cold climates will dry the scalp.

Apart from these very common issues, dry scalp can also be caused by underlying skin conditions. Before you conclude that any one of these is the condition you have, it is best to consult a doctor to get the right diagnosis and treatment.

This is a condition that makes the scalp feel flaky and itchy. In more severe cases, eczema can cause the skin to be reddish and dry, even going as far as looking leathery and cracked. This condition can appear in any part of the body. Studies have shown that those with eczema have high risks of developing allergic diseases like hay fever or asthma. The causes of eczema are unknown, but it has been known to run in families, which makes scientists believe that the overreaction of the immune system that triggers eczema is a genetic condition. However, the symptoms of eczema can be worsened by stress, heat, contact with irritating fabrics like wool, and cold weather.
Scalp psoriasis. This condition, apart from making the scalp feel and look dry, can also cause severe flaking and itching. Psoriasis is a skin condition that happens when the immune system triggers an abnormal amount of skin cells to grow in many body parts. The skin growth is not limited to the head and can also manifest in other parts of the body. People who suffer from psoriasis are very likely to experience dandruff, although it is worth noting that dandruff is not a condition that is exclusively related to psoriasis.
Seborrheic dermatitis. This condition is also known as seborrhea. This is a common skin condition that causes symptoms like itching, redness, and flaking. The symptoms can happen in any part of the body, but if it happens in the scalp, the flaking is called dandruff. It is unknown what specifically causes seborrhea, but it has been linked to stress, genes, the yeast that normally live in the skin, and cold weather.

There are much less common diseases that can also be linked to dry scalp and dandruff, including Parkinson’s disease and HIV. People who have these conditions tend to have an increased rate of dandruff.

Solutions

If you are suffering from dry scalp, here are some of the most common home treatments you can use to alleviate or possibly end the symptoms.

Aloe vera . Aloe vera has numerous properties that can help with your scalp problems. This plant can help with inflammation and can be of great help in reducing skin irritation.

Apple cider vinegar . Apart from being a great condiment, apple cider vinegar also works wonders for your dry scalp. First, its antimicrobial properties help prevent irritation due to fungal or bacterial growth. Second, its anti-inflammatory properties can help with exfoliation. To use this product, simply mix two parts water with one part of apple cider vinegar and apply it to your scalp. Let the mixture sit in your scalp for five minutes before washing it off using a gentle shampoo.
Baking soda with olive oil. These two work best for dandruff because they are the perfect match for skin health. While olive oil moisturizes, baking soda prevents bacterial growth. Together, they work perfectly to moisturize and exfoliate your scalp.
Coconut oil. Coconut oil is considered as one of the best things to use on your skin due to its benefits, a part of them being alleviating dry scalp. Coconut oil works by moisturizing the scalp and preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi with its antibacterial properties. Coconut oil has been considered one of the best treatments for seborrheic dermatitis because of its moisturizing properties.

Mashed bananas . Bananas are popular for being natural moisturizers, thus making them great treatment options for dry scalp. Furthermore, they also prevent the growth of microbes, thus preventing recurrence of dry scalp and dandruff. All you need to do is to mash some bananas and mix it with a few teaspoons of coconut oil. Massage the mixture into the scalp and let it sit for 10 minutes.
Tea tree oil. This herbal medication has very strong antifungal, antiseptic, and antibiotic properties that can work to help relieve dry scalp. You can purchase tea tree oil from drugstores and even online.

Apart from these natural products, here are some products that can also be of great help for your dry scalp.

Just Nutritive Vinegar Rinse Cleanser . If your shampoo is not enough, complement it with this cleanser. This product is made using more than 20 ingredients that specifically nourish your skin. This cleanser works best in eliminating built up hair care products and can even give your hair a bouncy glow. The product also detoxifies and dissolves the impurities stuck in your scalp’s pores, leaving the skin free to breathe and absorb nutrients. It is free from sulfate, color safe, and non-irritating.

Keune So Pure Renewing Elixir Exfoliating Lotion . This product is excellent for dandruff treatment. Made up of more than 20 natural ingredients, it is very gentle to the skin and works best for natural conditioning against dry scalp and dandruff. The two main components are Patchouli and Birch oils, both of which work best in treating dandruff and scalp irritation. Using the product will leave your scalp feeling calm and relaxed.

Malibu C Scalp Therapy Wellness Remedy - Scalp Wellness. This product is considered as the “ultimate flake fighter” because it naturally satisfies the needs of the scalp by providing it with all the needed nutrients to stay healthy. Get Rid of Your Dry Scalp Once and for All

Been finding tiny dandruff-like flakes in your hair lately? Has your scalp developed a persistent itch that has been driving you mad? If you answered yes to both questions, you may be suffering from dry scalp. How does a case of scalp dryness differ from dandruff? First off, dandruff produces big, oily flakes that are either yellow or white. Scalp dryness also causes a formation of flakes, but they’re much smaller and dry. Second, dandruff is commonly caused by seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that irritates skin and turns it oily and red. A dry scalp is usually caused by a lack of moisture or a minor skin irritation. If you have a dry scalp, there could be other parts of your skin that may also be dry due to dehydration.

Some of scalp dryness’ most common factors are sunburn, dehydration, and frequent exposure to changes in temperature. It is possible for an adverse reaction to products you are currently using, a condition also known as contact dermatitis, to contribute to dryness. Aging can also be a factor in developing a dry scalp. Fear not, there are many ways to remedy a dry, itchy scalp. Here are ways to help your scalp return to its healthy, itch-free glory.

Do NOT scratch it!

Scratching your scalp can cause abrasions and make things worse. Try to resist the desire to rake your nails along the itch. You can try using products that could relieve the itching, like Avlon’s KeraCare Dry and Itchy Scalp Moisturizing Shampoo . It contains natural extracts that can moisturize your scalp and lessen the irritation.

Avoid exposing your hair and scalp to excessive heat.

Hot, steaming showers are simply irresistible in cold weather, but be warned, they may be playing a part in drying out your scalp. Hot water may not only damage your scalp but could also dry out and weaken your hair. Consider switching to warm water instead and finish off with cold water to boost your scalp’s circulation.

When styling your hair after a shower, avoid blow drying your hair. The high heat might dry out your scalp and cause more problems. If you really must use a blow dryer, try to use a warm or cool setting. It’s best to let your hair rest for an hour or so before using a dryer on it straight away.

Protect against the sun.

Like the skin on the rest of your body, your scalp also needs protection from the sun. Your hair may not be enough to protect it from harmful UV rays. The best way to protect your hair and scalp is to wear a hat. If you can’t wear one, just put a bit of sunscreen on the exposed part of your scalp to prevent a bad case of sunburn that would make your scalp dryness worse.

Use gentler products.

Harsh chemicals in some shampoos can strip your scalp of its much-needed moisture. If you have sensitive skin, try washing your hair with a hypoallergenic shampoo that gently moisturizes your scalp, like the Specifique Bain Riche Dermo-Calm Shampoo by Kerastase . It contains glycerol for hydration and calophyllum oil, which lessens inflammation.

Don’t over wash your hair.

The scalp produces natural oils called sebum to protect the skin and encourage hair growth. Washing your hair too often removes this essential layer of oil and makes your scalp dry and irritated. Try cutting the times you wash your hair down to two to three times a week.

If you also have dry hair, keep in mind that moisture is important to bring it back to full health. Do not stop conditioning your hair even when you’re not using shampoo. If you have oily hair, you can wash your hair a bit more frequently than just twice or thrice a week. Just make sure to use a shampoo that is made for daily cleansing and wouldn’t dry your hair out. If you are unable to do a wet wash, you can either skip a day or use some dry shampoo to lessen the buildup. You could also use coconut oil to ease a dry scalp. Just apply the oil regularly into your hair for half an hour before a wash, then use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo.

Stay hydrated.

Dehydration is one of scalp dryness’ main factors. Remembering to drink the recommended amount of water per day is important for preventing or healing dry skin. Try to drink 1.2 liters of water a day or more in warmer temperatures and when you’re more physically active.

Have a healthy, balanced diet.

The scalp, like the skin on the rest of your body, would benefit from a balanced diet. Consume foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, mackerel, roasted soybeans and walnuts. Omega-3 fats have many other benefits to offer, like improving sleep and helping fight off depression and anxiety, in addition to keeping your skin healthy and protecting it from sun damage.

Vitamin A and iron each play an important part in keeping your skin healthy. Vitamin A aids in skin cell maintenance and function and plays an important role in the circulatory and immune systems’ functions. Some Vitamin A-rich foods you can try including in your diet are dairy products, sweet potatoes and orange fruits and vegetables. Iron is essential to maintaining a healthy circulatory system. If you are a woman between the ages of 19 and 50, you will need 18mg of iron a day, while men need 8. The scalp and skin need oxygen and nutrition, so the best way to providing them the care they need is to include Iron in your diet. Try incorporating nuts, tofu, leafy greens, beans or poultry in your daily meals.

See a specialist.

If you have been trying to treat your dry, itchy scalp for a month and the irritation does not ease up or gets worse, you may have to go to a doctor. It may be something more serious than a simple case of dryness. You may have eczema, psoriasis, or other conditions, all of which require immediate medical attention.

If you would prefer treating your dry scalp with ingredients you can find in your home, you can make a simple remedy with nothing but a bit of yogurt and an egg. The combination might sound a bit strange, but yogurt and egg can benefit your scalp. Yogurt soothes and exfoliates the skin while the protein and fat in eggs can nourish the scalp and protect it from free radical damage at a cellular level.

Combine a cup of plain, unflavored yogurt and a well-beaten egg. Massage the concoction into your hair and scalp, and then let it rest for 10 minutes. Keep in mind that hot water may cook the egg and make it difficult to wash out, so it’s better to use either cold or lukewarm water when rinsing the mixture off. Aside from solving your dry scalp problem, this treatment also promotes hair growth.

If you would like to try an all-natural, pre-prepared product, you can try out Just Nutritive’s Vinegar Nutritive Rinse Cleanser. Not only does it relieve dry skin, it also promotes hair growth. The cleanser contains apple cider vinegar, an age-old solution to scalp dryness and hair loss that you could also try using at home, combined with aloe vera and other organic extracts.

Before using any of the remedies mentioned above, make sure that you are not allergic to any of their ingredients beforehand. An allergic reaction can lead to contact dermatitis, an uncomfortable red rash that may cause your skin to blister up or crack.  If any irritation or severe allergic reaction occurs, contact your doctor immediately.

As the age-old saying goes, an ounce of care is better than a pound of cure. Keep yourself well hydrated, handle your hair with care, and remember to maintain a balanced diet. Take good care of your body and you can kiss those scalp and skin problems goodbye.

Is Dry Scalp Curable?

Of all hair problems out there, dry scalp is one of those you can’t spot easily. It often gets ignored until the telltale signs such as dandruff and itchiness become apparent. Once you realize the issue, it’s often too late for a simple solution.

Dry scalp is pretty mild. However, the itchiness is burdensome. It can prompt you to scratch your head more, which triggers more dandruff to fall off. Speaking of dandruff, having them on your mane and clothes could be embarrassing.

The good news is that there are numerous hair tips on how to counter and prevent such condition. To get rid of your dry scalp, the first thing you need to do is find out its possible root cause.

Root Cause

Your hair owes its shine from the natural oils or sebum produced by your scalp. Such oils are also the indication of a healthy scalp. However, sebum production can be disrupted, which may lead to dry hair and scalp.

The cause of disruption in sebum production tends to differ from one person to another. Do you remember how teens are more prone to having acne than those in other age groups? Those who are in their puberty stage also suffer from dry scalp because of the hormonal changes they’re experiencing. Instead of dry scalp, some of them may deal with too greasy hair.

Androgen hormones are the ones in-charge of stimulating sebum production. Teens often experience a spike in such hormones. As a result, the sebaceous glands in their scalp can produce more oil than what their hair needs. Ironically, the overproduction may damage or clog the actual glands, prompting them to give off less oil.

Being outdoors for too long and without proper headgear can damage your sebaceous glands as well. It could be due to the sun’s heat, the dry air, or the constantly changing temperature. During winter, staying indoors and getting exposed to dry hair can also affect your scalp.

Excessive scratching can also trigger or worsen your dry scalp. Doing such out of habit or in response to itchiness can further irritate the sebaceous glands.

The least common and most serious cause of dry scalp is seborrheic eczema. As its name implies, it’s a form of eczema that occurs in your scalp. In some cases, it extends to the face. It’s characterized by scaly and yellowish skin patches. Unless you’re diagnosed with this condition, you can treat dry scalp on your own.

Risk Factors

Certain lifestyle habits and conditions make you more prone to developing dry scalp. Just like the root cause, it’s also worth addressing these risk factors to prevent further recurrences. The risk factors you should be mindful of are as follows:

High stress levels
Having one or both parents who have or had dry skin
A diet rich in spicy, salty and sugary foods
Old age
Excessive use of hair products that have allergens and/or irritants

Signs

Dandruff

Dandruff is among the signs of having dry scalp. It manifests in the form of white flakes that fall off from the scalp. These flakes are actually the dead skin cells of your scalp.

One common misconception about dandruff and dry scalp is that they always go together. In reality, there are other possible skin conditions that can bring about those white flakes. These conditions include eczema, psoriasis and excessive sebum production on the scalp. Frequent scratching and sensitivity to hair products are other potential reasons.

Itchiness

Both the dry scalp and dandruff can trigger the itchy feeling. Scratching your scalp makes it worse.

Soreness

The soreness from a typical dry scalp is tolerable. However, if its cause is eczema, it can be too much to bear.

Bleeding scalp

This one is pretty rare. However, excessive scratching and eczema may result to this condition.

Treatment

Hair tips for treating dry scalp doesn’t have to be costly. You can treat it at home using products that you can get from your garden, kitchen or the nearest store. You can also order some of the products online. If you decide to buy products, make sure to try the smallest options first.

Apply aloe vera gel on your scalp and hair.

Aloe vera acts as moisturizer for your scalp. If you have dry hair, you can take advantage of its moisturizing properties as well. Aloe vera also helps with the soreness associated with dry scalp.

Massage your scalp using coconut oil.

The use of coconut oil is among the standard hair tips. It’s been mentioned many times before but it’s worth reiterating because of its benefits to your hair.

As an oil, this product helps satisfy your scalp and hair’s need for moisture. Coconut oil also possesses anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. This can help relieve irritation caused by bacteria in your scalp.

You can also make a hair mask out of coconut oil. You can blend it with avocado, honey or argan oil to reap more benefits for both your hair and scalp.

Opt for a shampoo that moisturizes and reduces itchiness.

KeraCare’s Anti-Dandruff Moisturizing Shampoo and Phyto Moisturizing Scalp Exfoliating Shampoo are two of the recommended hair products you can use. Avalon, the company behind KeraCare, is well-known for their line of hair care products for different types of hair.

KeraCare’s shampoo for dry scalp helps moisturize your hair. It also addresses the itchiness and flakiness resulting from the unhealthy scalp. Wild chamomile, menthol and citric acid are among the many ingredients of this shampoo.

Phyto’s offering takes pride on its main ingredients which are Guyana wood and black pepper. This product is also promising in hydrating and removing the flakes and itchiness in your scalp. It leaves your hair shiny as well.

Regardless of the shampoo you use, make sure you apply it by massaging it gently into your scalp. Never use your nails when shampooing. Use your fingertips instead.

In case moisturizing and anti-dandruff hair products aren’t effective, you should consider visiting a dermatologist. This is also advisable if the soreness and itchiness are too much. In case you spot yellowish flakes instead of the white ones, you might be suffering from eczema. A dermatologist can recommend better products for treating the skin condition.

Additional Hair Tips

Lessen your blower use. Blower won’t just dry your hair in an instant; it can dehydrate your scalp as well. Style your hair without the curling or flattening iron as well. During weekends, you can simply towel-dry or air-dry your hair.
Wash your hair less frequently. Even if you don’t apply shampoo or conditioner, excessive exposure to water can wash away the natural oils in your scalp.
Trim the ends every 4 to 6 weeks. The ends of your hair are usually the most damaged parts. Prevent them from affecting the other parts of your hair by cutting them away.
Use a humidifier when the air in your home (or even in your workplace) is too dry. A humidifier moistens the air, which in turn prevents the air from dehydrating your scalp.
Minimize your consumption of spicy, salty and sugary foods. It also helps if you eat more foods rich in fatty acids.
Resist scratching your scalp. If it’s too itchy, press your fingertips to the affected parts instead. You can use a head massager as well. Aside from managing the itchiness, massaging your scalp can also improve blood circulation therein.
Comb your hair in a gentle manner. Just like scratching, harsh combing can irritate your scalp. When buying combs, pay attention to their tips as well. Make sure the tips aren’t sharp.
As for hair brushes, avoid the synthetic ones. Don’t over brush your hair as well. If you do, you risk brushing the natural oils away.

Conclusion

Dry scalp is manageable. It can take some time to eradicate the root cause and manage the risk factors. However, if you treat the root cause and practice hair care, you can stop dry scalp and its signs from bothering you in the long run.

The Best Coconut Oil Reviewed

The coconut tree is called the ‘tree of life’ because all of its parts, from the roots up to its fruits and leaves, are all usable. In the hair care industry, coconut oil remains to be one of the main ingredients of most shampoos, conditioners, hot oil treatments, etc.But what does coconut oil really do to your hair? What should you look for when buying coconut oil? Which products are the best?

What Coconut Oil Does for Your Hair

Coconut oil has been used as hair treatment for centuries. It’s natural, easily obtainable, and doesn’t have side effects unlike its synthetic counterparts.

Prevents Hair Fatigue – The shrinking and swelling of the fibers due to water absorption and retention can damage your hair. Coconut oil makes hair fibers stronger to prevent fatigue. Hair fatigue is the common cause of breakage and split ends.
Reduces Loss of Protein – Hair is basically all protein. Thus, unhealthy and weak hair is usually caused by lack or loss of protein. Treating your hair with coconut oil has been proven to significantly reduce loss of protein from hair.
Conditions from the Inside – Moisture retention is one main functions of coconut oil. This feature keeps your hair strong and well-moisturized. It also accounts for that silky feel and shiny look. Coconut oil does that by conditioning from within and protecting hair from environment damage and heat.
Prevents Bacteria – Studies show that coconut oil has potent antibacterial properties. It prevents hair and scalp diseases caused by bacterial, viral, and protozoan infections. It also helps prevent lice infestation and dandruff.
Stimulates Hair Growth. One of the most common treatments for thinning hair is regular application of hot oil. To make it even more effective, coconut oil is mostly used in spas and salons. Coconut oil stimulates the growth of thicker hair strands and also slows down hair loss process.

What to Look for in Coconut Oil?

Not all coconut oils are created, well, produced equal. Some will be better than others on the way they are manufactured, the raw products used, or the process itself. When choosing a coconut oil, it should be as close to being natural as possible. Here are terms to look for.

Cold Pressed – Cold pressed coconut oil means that it was extracted from coconut meat. The cold pressing method is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in order to maintain as much nutrients as possible in the resulting coconut oil.
Organic – This is the ‘buzz’ nowadays and simply means that the coconut from which the oil is extracted did not undergo intensive farming methods and is free from pesticides. Also, you should look for the Organic Food Federation logo to ensure the product’s authenticity.
Raw – This is as natural as coconut oil can be. Raw coconut oil is extracted using minimal heat to prevent destruction of nutrients and other beneficial compounds. Temperature should be kept within 40 to 45 degrees Celsius.
Refined and Unrefined – Refined coconut oil is derived from copra or dried coconut. The process involves deodorization and bleaching. Unrefined coconut, on the other hand, is extracted from mature, fresh coconuts and did not undergo any processing. It’s also called virgin coconut oil.
Fair Trade – This means that buying coconut oil helps farmers get their fair share of the product’s price.

There are many coconut oil brands and products out there, but a handful stand out. Here’s a rundown on a few of them.

Coconut Oil Recipes

Beneficial to hair as it is, coconut oil may not be the do-all or silver bullet solution for all your hair problems. There are also products or even other oils that can do what it does.

Fortunately, coconut oil is pretty non-reactive, meaning it can be used in combination with other ingredients to maximize or augment its potency. That’s why many brands incorporate coconut oil into their products mixing with other natural or synthetic ingredients. The goal is to maximize the natural beneficial effects of coconut oil.

You can also combine coconut oil with ingredients that you may already have in your home to treat common hair problems such as the following.

Hair Breakage – Coconut oil, which restores hair proteins, can be combined with apple cider vinegar, which strengthens hair.

Deep Conditioning – Organic coconut oil can hydrate and nourish hair so it can be combined with honey which is known for hair follicle strengthening and moisture retention properties. You may also mix in apple cider vinegar for added hair strength.

Repair and Nourishment – Avocado oil is known to lubricate dry strands, revitalize hair follicles, and protect hair from breakage. Mixing it with coconut oil which promotes and stimulates hair growth can repair and nourish damaged hair.

Here are a few recipes that you can try at home.

Wrapping it Up

Coconut oil has many benefits to our body and those for your hair are just a few of them. But you need to be careful in choosing the right coconut oil for your hair problems.

Choose a well-known brand and a product which has undergone meticulous production to ensure purity. It’s also good to buy from companies that support farmers and are against animal testing.

Coconut oil doesn’t have to be used alone. You may combine coconut oil with other oils and ingredients to reap the most benefits out of it.

3 Creative Ways to Fix Dry Hair

You don’t have to worry about dry hair unless you care about being presentable. Some people may or may not notice when your tresses are in good condition. However, a dull and frizzy mane will attract attention for the wrong reasons.

Imagine eating in a posh restaurant or attending a corporate event with unruly hair. The people around will likely give you the look. Even the folks at home or on the streets may poke fun at your supposed crowning glory.

Common hair styling products can give a temporary fix. Ironically, they could worsen the dryness in the long run. If you want safer, more effective, and even cheaper solutions, you might want to be creative and try out the following 3 tips:

Tip #1: The Tea Trick

For centuries, teas have been lauded for their numerous health benefits. A cup of tea can keep you hydrated and provide relief for sore throat. If you consume teas frequently, you may reduce your risk of developing heart disease and cancers.

Tea should be a part of your beauty regimen as well. Thanks to its antioxidants, you can counter signs of aging. Gargling it can whiten your teeth as well. If you have dry hair, the beverage can help bring back your mane’s luster.

To add tea in your hair care regimen, simply brew at least a liter. (If you have longer tresses, you should go beyond that amount.) Later on, you can use it for your final rinse after shampooing.

You should know, though, that you can’t just brew any type of tea. As for the kind of tea, you should choose chamomile tea if you’re blonde. Black tea is recommended for brunettes.

Using an unsuitable tea can stain your mane or it won’t provide sufficient shine. On the other hand, opting for the suggested tea won’t just add shine to your hair; it will also enhance its color.

You can use either leaves or teabags. If you opt for leaves, make sure you strain the tea before you use it to rinse your hair. After you separate the steeped leaves and tea, save the former in a clean jar. You can reuse the steeped leaves up to three times.

Tip #2: A Fruity Hair Mask

Your diet can affect your hair too. Keep in mind that your strands are made from keratin, which is a form of protein. It’s a no-brainer that you should eat protein-rich foods such as eggs, poultry and lean meat.

Fruits and vegetables may offer fewer of such macronutrient. However, a simple combination of banana and avocado can do wonders to your hair. For speedy results, you can blend them to create your own hair mask.

Dry hair is usually brittle. With the help of banana, you can improve your hair’s elasticity. Aside from that, the fruit also makes your tresses smoother yet stronger.

As for the avocado, its main benefit is its ability to lock moisture in your hair. You can apply different types of oils and moisturizing products to your mane. However, the moisture they provide will be wasted if there’s nothing that seals it in.

Ingredients:

1 ripe banana
1 ripe avocado

Instructions:

Wash and peel the fruits accordingly. Deseed the avocado.
Slice them into chunks.
Put the chunks of fruits in a mixing bowl. Mash them until they’re well-mixed. Doing this by hand is more preferable as long as you wear gloves.
Once free of lumps, apply the fruity mixture to your mane. Massage your scalp using it. Spread it evenly on your strands as well. Let it sit for 30 minutes up to an hour.
Rinse off the mixture using lukewarm or cool water.

Tip #3: Coconut Oil (and its Countless Combos)

Plenty of hair care products boast of having one or both of these ingredients: aloe vera and coconut oil. With one slice of aloe vera leaf, you can scoop out the gel and apply it on your hair before shampooing or conditioning. Aside from the smoothness and shine it provides, this trick can help enhance hair growth.

For better results, you can mix aloe vera and coconut oil. Coconut oil used to be a less popular ingredient for hair care products. Nowadays, it seems like more products are made out of it. If you want healthier hair in the long run, having this ingredient in your home will help you achieve such.

Coconut oil can help fill the tiny gaps in a hair strand. This helps add volume in your mane. It can also help you counter dandruff. Like sandalwood oil and argan oil, coconut oil also gives instant shine to dry hair.

One of the best things about coconut oil is its versatility. In addition to aloe vera, it can be mixed with other ingredients to make a hair mask, conditioner or shampoo.

Some of the best ingredients you can use along with coconut oil are as follows: avocado, honey, yogurt, eggs, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, and rosemary essential oil. While these ingredients offer benefits to your hair, stick to two to four ingredients per recipe. Once you’re done, you can apply the mixture to your hair and rinse it accordingly.

Additional Tips

You don’t want to manage dry hair on a daily basis, do you? That’s just bothersome. Aside from the aforementioned fixes, you should address the underlying causes. Below are additional tips that will help you achieve and maintain smooth and shiny hair.

Shampoo less frequently. Washing your hair a lot tends to dry it up more easily.
Consume more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These foods include spinach, salmon and walnuts among others. These enhance your scalp’s ability to produce more natural oils.
Minimize the use of hair blower and styling iron. Both products operate using heat, which dries up your hair in an instant.
Ditch traditional hairspray. This product can make your hair look nice but your mane tends to feel dry.
Trim the ends every 4 to 6 weeks.

Contrary to popular belief, drinking more water than usual won’t necessarily make your hair sleek and smooth. Even so, you should remain hydrated to help your organs carry out their functions and to ensure healthy-looking skin.

Dry hair is manageable. You don’t have to spend lots on hair treatment products and services. More often than not, the solution you need is available in your kitchen or in the nearest market.

Top 5 Vitamins To Combat Hair Loss

Hair loss is among the most dreaded signs of aging especially for males. It is commonly linked to decreased attractiveness. Worse, it may negatively affect one’s self-image and confidence.

Androgenic Alopecia, more commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness, is the primary cause of hair loss in men and women. Male Pattern Baldness is caused by genetics. However, factors such as stress, diet, lifestyle, and the amount of essential nutrition intake also play a significant role.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition For Healthy Hair

Proper nutrition intake is a major contributor for the health of your hair. In fact, there are cases when nutrition alone is the cause of hair loss. The hair is composed of the second fastest-growing cells in the body. However, it is not a vital organ or tissue. Hence, your body will never prioritize its nutritional needs.

Because it is expendable, your hair is also the first thing to experience the adverse effects of nutritional imbalance.Having said these, it is important to note that too much of certain substances can be harmful for your hair. Balance is key. The hair cells need a balanced intake of proteins, iron, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals for them to function optimally.

The energy needed to grow hair is lowest during mornings. Make it a point to always eat breakfast. Eat balanced meals consisting mainly of protein and complex carbohydrates. These include lean meat, tofu, beans, and nuts. Iron is also essential for a hair-friendly diet. Eating red meat twice a week is enough. It’s best to eat different kinds of food in order to meet your nutritional needs.

The energy to grow your hair drops four hours after having meal. Try to eat nutritious snacks four hours after every meal. Your hair can also be dehydrated. Always drink water to keep your hair hydrated.

Top 5 Vitamins To Combat Hair Loss

So what exactly are the kinds of vitamins you need to be ingesting and where can you get them? Here’s a list.

VITAMIN A

Vitamin A is crucial for healthier hair. The human body is continually producing free radicals – unstable atoms that are damaging to cells – due to various metabolic processes. Free radicals also damage hair follicles.

Vitamin A has antioxidant properties which help stop free radicals from forming in the body. Adequate amount of Vitamin A promotes blood circulation which contributes to healthy hair. Vitamin A also helps moisturize the scalp. As moisturized scalp leads to stronger and nourished hair.

But too much of vitamin A is also harmful for your hair. Excessive Vitamin A strains the hair follicles by hastening the process of hair growth. So it is also important to take vitamin A in moderation.

Some good sources of vitamin A are liver, eggs, fortified cereals, skim milk, and vegetables.

VITAMIN B

Vitamin B, particularly Biotin, is one of the most popular vitamins for hair growth. Biotin deficiency is linked with hair loss. However, cases of vitamin B deficiency are rare especially with those who are eating a balanced diet.

Other B-vitamins aid the production of red blood cells that transport oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles. Take note however that taking more vitamin B than normal amount is not doing you any favor. This is because vitamin B is water-soluble. Excess vitamin B will only be urinated.

Foods rich in B-vitamins include whole grains, fish, meat, seafood, and dark leafy vegetables.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C best helps hair growth by providing collagen. Collagen is a natural amino acid that is good for hair growth and for the skin. Vitamin C can help prevent graying and dryness of hair.

Vitamin C is also antioxidant. It combats the harmful effect of free radicals and other stressors to hair follicles. A protein called Dickoppf-1 (DKK-1) is present in those who are experiencing hair loss. Vitamin C keeps the body from producing this hair follicle growth inhibitor.

Vitamin C is also water-soluble. It is necessary to have daily intake of vitamin C through foods or supplements to maintain your hair’s health. The best sources of vitamin C are broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, potatoes, tomatoes, and other fruits and vegetables.

VITAMIN D

Research shows that vitamin D helps create hair follicles. Alopecia, a technical term for hair loss, is also attributed to low vitamin D levels.

A 2012 study suggests shows that vitamin D can help produce new hair follicles. Researchers in Harvard also said that vitamin D may stimulate dormant hair follicles. However, the actual role of vitamin D for hair growth has yet to be fully established.

Vitamin D is also fat-soluble. So also avoid taking too much amounts of vitamin D. Excessive vitamin D accumulates in fat tissues at dangerous levels. It may also bring calcium in the blood which may lead to fatigue and kidney issues.

Vitamin-D rich foods include fatty fish, mushrooms, grains, cheese, eggs, and fortified foods.

VITAMIN E

A major way vitamin E helps the hair is by controlling the PH levels and oil production of the body. Overproduction of oil happens due to dryness of the scalp. This excess oil blocks the hair follicles resulting to hair fall induced by itching and dandruff.

Vitamin E is also an antioxidant that prevents the harmful effects of free radicals to the body. Moreover, it aids blood circulation and the repair of damaged hair follicles in the scalp. The best sources of vitamin E are vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables. Supplementation is also beneficial.

Chemical products such as those found in some shampoos and styling products are also harmful to hair. Those products remove the natural oil of hair. As much as possible, use natural and organic products.

Finally, adopt a positive mindset. Research proves that beliefs has a significant impact to your health. Having a good mindset also enables you take proactive actions in taking care of your hair.

How to Get Defined Curls for Men

Curly hair doesn’t have to be a big frizzy mess. All it takes to get defined curls is to understand what curly hair is. It will also help to know the products that can keep it manageable and in style.

What Is Curly Hair?

Curly hair results from having asymmetrical hair follicles. These follicles make oval-shaped hair that curls into a definite S-shape. Some curls look like loose loops, while others appear as tight corkscrews. The looseness or tightness of the hair strands determine the type of curls.

There are three types of curly hair. These are 3A, 3B, and 3C.

3A strands, like those of Josh’s Groban, are large, loose rings. They are shiny but tend to frizz and lose definition.

The next type makes you think of Justin Timberlake’s hair during his ‘NSync years. The curls are tighter, but they lack in lustre. These 3B curls have the circumference of a sharpie marker. 3B curls easily dry and frizz if not taken care of.

The last type of curly hair is 3C. Described as having tight corkscrew appearance, 3C curls have a pencil-width circumference that creates lots of volume. Although this type tends to dry and frizz, with proper TLC, it could easily become the highlight of a look.

All types of curly hair have problems with frizz and dryness. The good news is, you can solve these issues in three simple steps:

Use the right shampoo.
Choose the correct conditioner.
Keep the right styling products on hand.

What Is a Shampoo?

Shampoo is a cleaning agent that is designed to remove grease and dirt on hair. It comes in dry, liquid, and bar forms. In doing their job, most shampoos also strip the hair’s natural oils. This leaves the hair dull and dry. This is bad news for curly strands as they tend to frizz and dry fast. To avoid dryness due to hair washing, people with curly hair must use shampoos that specially formulated for curly locks.

What Is a Conditioner?

A hair conditioner is designed to improve the manageability and appearance of the hair. It is made up of ingredients like silicones, oils, emollients, and soaps. Its unique formulation replenishes the moisture that your shampoo has stripped away. It also helps control dryness, frizz, and fly-away. It also protects the hair from damage by making the outer covering of the hair (called the cuticle) form a tight layer around the hair shaft.

Shops offer tons of varieties of conditioners. But, there is no need to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of the available products. There are only three basic types of conditioner that you have to invest in to get the perfect curls.

First is a deep conditioner. The product is a must-have for curly strands. Dubbed as a post-shampoo hydrator, you leave it on the hair for a relatively long period of time. This will allow the conditioner to penetrate the hair strands. The result is a richly moisturized hair from the inside out. It fights off dryness and frizz like magic!

The second product that should be a fixture in your bathroom cabinet is a cleansing conditioner. It acts like a shampoo and conditioner at the same time: it cleanses and moisturizes. Cleansing conditioners are often used after regular hair washing. But, for people who want to go no poo within the week, a cleansing conditioner is the best alternative to regular shampoo.

The last but necessary conditioner for curly hair is the leave-in type. This post-shower, no-rinse conditioner nourishes and protects the hair. It will leave your hair looking and feeling healthy, and ready to style.

What Are Styling Products?

Cleansing and moisturizing the hair is just the beginning of perfectly defined curls. Curly hair needs more TLC than its straight counterpart. Here is where styling products come in.

Styling products help create and maintain hair styles. It is the secret behind well-kept curls that stay even in the worst weather. Men with curly hair can use a lot of styling products: pomades, waxes, clays, muds, creams, gels, mousse, and paste. Aside from looking at the efficiency of the product, lifestyle and personal taste determine what type of styling product is best for use.
