How to Manage Grey Hair

Hair follicles have different stem cells for hair growth and pigment. These cells often work together, but fall out of synch as the body gets older.

The growth stem cell makes a strand of hair for about one to three years. After shedding that strand, it grows a new one.

Every time it regenerates, the pigment stem cells get tired. This leads to the gray coming out.

Causes

Several studies list what causes grey hair and premature greying. Disorders sometimes happen where the body attacks their own cells. This results in grey hair to appear prematurely.

Common ones include ethnicity and nutrient deficiencies. Here are some other examples:

Genetics

Race affects the pace of grey hair. Caucasians often reach their crown of gray before other ethnicities.  The grey usually comes out once they hit 30.Asians follow in their late 30s. African-Americans get gray strands when they hit their mid-40s.

Nutrition

Lack of essential amino acids and Vitamin B 12 deficiency makes hair lose their pigment. Get enough vitamins and minerals to protect cells from toxins.

Lifestyle

Stress can be one of the culprits in many hair and skin concerns. It may not have a direct connection with gray hair appearances, but it’s often still linked. Poor diet and lack of exercise also weaken hair health.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is in the chemicals used for bleaching hair. It is also present in hair follicles, and builds up as we age. This blockage stops or slows down melanin production, which is the pigment in our hair and skin.

Age

The most obvious reason is the natural cycle of life. Cells tire themselves out. They slow down and can’t keep up with normal production.

An estimated 50% of the population in the US has their hair half covered with grey strands.  This happens when they are 50 years of age.

Yet, there are many young adults who begin to lose the pigment early in life. Some people who are not even 25 years old are looking for answers to what causes grey hair.

Premature Greying

There are other specific causes to the premature growth of grey hair in young people. Those who have anemia may see their hair turning grey sooner than expected. Harmful hair dyes and bleaches are also to blame.

If one of your parents had grey hair early in their lives, you may experience the same outcome. A record of premature graying in your family tree raises your chances of developing one.

Health Disorders

Aside from the common reasons for early grey hair, there are also serious health concerns. People in their 20s may miss out on some key nutrients. Poor life choices and bad habits also have their place in pushing the grey outwards.

Autoimmune Diseases

Sometimes, the immune system attacks the body. Autoimmune disorders like vitiligo attack pigment cells, which causes discoloration. Some areas of skin appear off color.

Prevention of Grey Hair

You can’t stop the process of grey hair completely. You can only slow it down by taking active measures that promote hair health.

Researches show that young smokers have more grey strands than those who don’t light a cigarette. Smoking makes hair brittle and causes them to fall out. The addiction you get from nicotine makes it hard for you to stop, so find a friend who will hold you accountable.

Brushing your wet tangles after a shower can cause breakage and hair loss. Use combs that have wide teeth.

Hair dryers and curling irons damage the hair through heating. The heat seeps through the follicles even when you apply a protectant. Ditch the straighteners and let your hair dry in the wind.

Bleaching your hair makes it prone to falling out. It is common knowledge that bleaching kills the hair’s protein. That's why the color becomes a lighter shade.

Healthy Diet

Keratin makes up the hair. This is a type of protein that is important in the construction of healthy strands. Eggs and fish contain good amounts of these essential amino acids.

Vegetarians may have problems in getting the right kind of protein. Animal based protein is easier to absorb than the ones found in plants.

Supplements can help maintain the shine and luster of hair. Make sure that the multivitamins you buy contain plenty of iron, copper, and zinc.

Copper helps to prevent premature greying. Consume a lot of turnips, mushrooms, oysters, and spinach.

The whole vitamin B complex group is important for healthy hair and skin. Hair color sometimes fades when we get sick. Vitamin B-6 restores color to the hair after an illness.

Reports say that Folic Acid and Pantothenic Acid taken together help reverse greys. You can find these in yoghurt and bran.

You should also add in some Omega 3 to moisturize dry hair. This reduces scalp flakes and dandruff.

Iodine maintains hair color. Grab carrots and bananas for snacks.

Nuts and seeds have selenium that may help stop the quick forming of grey hair. Buy walnuts, soybeans, and corn to get proper amounts of selenium.

Horsetail breaks down the natural hydrogen peroxide found in hair.

Beans contain inositol that may boost hair health. Niacin helps in the nourishment of hair follicles through scalp circulation.

Blood Flow and Circulation

Massaging the scalp stimulates blood flow. The good news is that you’re already doing this in the shower. Put in a couple of extra minutes in massaging your scalp as you shampoo and condition.

Exercising promotes proper blood circulation. Proper blood flow helps in carrying the nutrients up to the hair. If you lay passive all day, the nutrients you consume won’t reach all the corners in your system.

Hair Treatments

There are a couple of home remedies you can try to reduce the appearance of grey hair. Studies show that some methods are effective to an extent.

They may help in preventing and reducing the growth of grey hair, but they’re not a miracle solution. Feel free to test out each one, and stick with those that work well for you.

Amla

One of the best hair care remedies at home is an Indian gooseberry called amla. Rub the paste on your scalp to prevent grey hair. Coconut oil and lemon can also do the trick.

Boil the berries with the oil and store it in a jar. Use only two tablespoons with every hair massage. Coat it on your hair for about 15 minutes, and leave it on for half an hour or overnight.

Amla has plenty of vitamin C in its reserves. This has anti-aging benefits and awakens your hair follicles. You can also leave amla oil in water for the night and use it as a rinse come morning.

Curry Leaves

Curry leaves can be an alternative to gooseberries if you don’t have them. The process is the same for amla. Mix with coconut oil and leave on your hair after massaging for a while.

This solution has rich sources of vitamin B that helps with pigmentation and hair growth.

Onion Juice

Studies have proven that onion juice reduces hair fall. It reverses the grey color by improving the health of your hair.

Chop an onion into little pieces for easy blending. Add a tablespoon of olive oil.

Get the juice by squeezing the pulp with cheesecloth. Massage on hair, but don’t leave the juice overnight. Wash it after half an hour.

Mustard Oil

You can even mix different kinds of oils to nourish the hair. Add one tablespoon of castor, jojoba, or blackseed oil to two tablespoons of mustard oil.

Warm them up first before massaging onto hair, then leave as usual.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek contains iron, potassium, and lysine. These nutrients prevent scalp dryness that causes the appearance of premature grey strands.

Soak two tablespoons of Fenugreek seeds overnight in a quarter cup of water. In the morning, make a smooth paste of it by grinding the seeds with more water.

If oil’s not your thing, you can soak your hair in black tea for an hour if you want. The antioxidants in the tea darken the hair with an added shine.

Chinese use fo-ti as a longevity tonic. Not only does the herb prevent the appearances of premature grey hair, but signs of aging as well.

Eggs aren’t only for eating. You could also apply beaten eggs on your hair and leave the substance overnight. Eggs are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin that may stop premature greying.

Grey Hair Management

Hair Dyes

Grey hair is more resistant to coat with hair dyes. Some light coloring doesn’t stick well to fine hair. Go for darker hues of brown and black to make sure they hold.

There are options for semi-permanent and permanent hair colorings. People try the semi-permanent ones first when their grey hair is starting to come out. When they’ve got half a head full, they often switch to permanent.

Temporary Solutions

Spray-on airbrushes also mask the grey. These concealers wash away with shampoo. Some people may want to cover grey hair for only a day or when attending an event.

Welcoming the Grey

There is nothing wrong with having grey hair. It’s but a natural part of life.

You shouldn't worry about what causes grey hair, especially if it’s genetic. You can talk to your parents about it. Ask advice based on how they handled their own premature greying.

Always adopt a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition should always have an important role in the maintenance of the body. Even if the results don’t show in your outward appearance, your system will thank you for the care.

Embracing your grey hair will give you a boost of optimism. Think about it as a fashion trend. Some people bleach their hair to get the color, while you have them on natural display.

Hair Thinning: Causes, Prevention and Remedy

One of the most common signs of aging is hair thinning and hair loss. Although more common in men, it is also experienced by a lot of women around the world. That is why hair growing products are scattered in the market. They come in various forms and prices but not everyone is proven safe and effective. Hence, careful examination of the product must be done before using them for your hair.

There are various reasons why many people experience hair thinning. Some say its hereditary why others argue that it is because of their lifestyle. To understand more about this problem, here are the top three causes of hair thinning and hair loss.

Stress

When the human body is exposed to undesirable conditions, its normal day-to-day processes are affected. The impact may depend on the nature and intensity of the stressor. It may cause a moderate delay in the process or may halt the process completely. Hair thinning, for example, is caused by physical and emotional stress. Traumatic experiences such as a motorcycle accident or a breakup may trigger a condition called telogen effluvium. This is a kind of hair loss that immediately occurs after a stressful event. In the process, the hair growth cycle becomes disrupted causing the hair to grow slowly or never grow at all. But after the recovery period, the hair growth cycle returns to its normal state.

Genes and Heredity

Yes, heredity belongs to the top three primary causes of hair loss among men and women. If you come from a family whose hair becomes thinner over time, there is a big chance that you may get it. For men, there is a condition called the male pattern baldness. It is caused by the combination of male hormones and genes, and it usually occurs at age 60. This condition leads to a hairline that resembles the letter M. For women, the counterpart of male pattern baldness is the androgenetic alopecia. Hair thinning all over the head is very evident and the hairline does not recede.

Misuse of Hair Products

Since there are tons of hair products available online, anybody can easily buy one for his or her hair. However, various researches show that there is an increasing number of people who experience hair thinning due to fake products.  Some shampoos, waxes, and styling gels contain toxic ingredients that are not indicated on their labels. Hence, without careful examination before using them, the effect on the hair is adverse.

Frequent overstyling of hair also causes hair thinning. Tight braids and high-heat treatments weaken the hair and cause it to fall out. Due to many hair strands that fall out every time the hair is styled, the hair becomes thinner over time.

Apart from the three main causes of hair thinning, there is still a lot of reasons why it happens most of the time. This may include the foods that you eat, the medications that you take, or the diseases that you currently have. Since prevention is better than cure, it is important to take the necessary steps and prevent it from happening. To do this, here are a few tips that you can follow:

Have a healthy lifestyle

Living healthy is one of the best things to do to prevent hair thinning. It does not only bring benefits to your hair, but also to your entire body as well. Exercise more often and eat foods that are rich in protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin C. Always make sure that the foods you eat are always in the right amount. Do not eat less or excessively.

Use safe and quality hair products

Make sure that the products you use on your hair are of good quality. Watch out for toxic components such as lead or mercury since they can cause hair loss and scalp irritation. Safe products are those that are approved and recommended by professionals. If possible, do a background check to see if a product is legitimate, and to avoid hair problems.

Avoid exposure to heat

Frequent heat exposure can weaken the hair structure and destroy the proteins that build it. It can also make the hair brittle and makes it easy to pull out. That is why you should limit the use of hair blowers and heat treatments. It is also a good practice to wear a hat when walking under the sun to prevent the direct heat from damaging your hair.

Avoid over-styling

Excessive pulling of hair to achieve different styles is harmful to your scalp and hair. Whenever possible, be gentle on your hair and do not over-style it. Avoid tight ponytails and braids, and let them relax once in a while.

Keep hair and scalp clean

Maintaining proper hygiene is also one of the best practices to do to prevent hair thinning. Wash your hair regularly with an anti-dandruff shampoo that is appropriate for your hair type. For women, use hair conditioners that promote healthier and stronger hair.

If your hair is already thin, here are some of the things that you can do to prevent it from further thinning and damage:

Take Vitamin B7 supplements

Biotin, a common name for Vitamin B7, is available in the market. It is often recommended as the best hair-growth supplement for thinning hair. The substance can be found in meat products and leafy vegetables. Hence, eating these foods while regularly taking biotin supplements can improve hair growth. Just remember to seek the advice of a professional about the right dosage that you have to take.

Massage the scalp regularly

Massaging the scalp using nutritive oil  is a natural way of improving hair growth in thin areas. The circular motion of the hand while massaging encourages blood flow in the scalp and hair follicles. Meanwhile, the nutritive oil contains essential minerals that promote healthy hair. It also prevents early hair damage and restores the strength of your hair. You can try coconut oil or egg oil if you have no available nutritive oil.

Consult a physician

If you notice the early signs of hair thinning, consult a doctor immediately. He can identify the possible factors that cause your hair to become thin. He can also give you a list of medications that you can try to restore your hair growth. In the market, the most popular medication is minoxidil. It is usually available in the form of cream and can be applied directly to the scalp. However, you should be aware of the risks and side effects of this product.

Improve your lifestyle

Consistent exposure to stressful situation may be one of the reasons why you experience hair thinning. Consider changing your lifestyle and minimize your vices. Make time to relieve your stress and live a healthy life. If you are emotionally down, take a walk at the park and enjoy the surrounding. It is also good to check the medications that you take since there is a chance that some of them is responsible for your hair thinning. Ask your doctor if there are other alternatives for your current medications.

DIY RECIPE FOR THICKER HAIR

Since hair thinning is prevalent, the market is bombarded with different hair products that promise thick and healthy hair. However, majority of these products are too expensive and do not guarantee accurate results. Some of them may even contain harmful ingredients that may cause irritation and other problems. That is why it is important to use an all-natural homemade product to restore your hair's thickness. Here is one do-it-yourself recipe that you can easily make:

Ingredients:

Ginger (1 medium-sized)

Ginger contains a lot of essential minerals such as phosphorus and magnesium that can nourish hair follicles. It can improve blood circulation in the scalp and prevent it from becoming dry. The ginger extract has antibacterial properties that can suppress microbial formation and dandruff.

Onion (1 large-sized)

Like ginger, onion also contains antimicrobial properties that can prevent lice formations. The extract contains sulphur which strengthens hair and stops it from breakage. It can also make the hair permanently shiny when used continuously.

2 tbsp/ 30mL Honey

Honey contains a large number of antioxidants which can make your hair healthy. It can keep the hair conditioned throughout the day since it has the ability to retain moisture in the hair. Honey also minimizes clogging in the scalp which allows hairs to grow freely.

2 tbsp/ 30mL Castor Oil

Castor oil is full of Omega-9 and Omega-6 fatty acids which is good for your hair. It can promote hair growth in thin areas and can make the hair shiny throughout the day. Castor oil also contains antiseptic properties which prevent dirt and microbial accumulation in the scalp.

2 tbsp/30mL Olive Oil

The properties of olive oil make it a good remedy for hair fall and split ends. It also makes your hair stronger by locking the keratin in hair strands. In areas where hairs are relatively thin, olive oil can enhance hair growth and can keep the hair from becoming frizzy

Procedures

Wash the ginger thoroughly and make sure that it is free from dirt. Wipe it with a clean cloth and remove its peel.
Place the ginger in a food processor or grate it manually using a grater. You may also opt to chop it finely using a knife if you have no available equipment. Set it aside.
Peel the onions and cut them in small parts.
Place the chopped onions and ginger in a blender and mix it with water. After mixing, use a muslin cloth to extract their juice.
Place the juice in a bowl and put 2 tbsp of honey, castor oil, and olive oil.
Mix all the ingredients thoroughly and set the mixture aside.

How to apply

Before applying the treatment, wash your hair with warm water and massage your scalp gently. Warm water increases blood flow in the scalp and causes the pores in thin areas to open. After 3-5 minutes, apply the mixture in your scalp and massage it moderately in a circular motion. Concentrate on the part with thin hair. Let the mixture sit for 30 to 60 minutes per day and rinse it with a nourishing shampoo afterward. For best results, repeat the process for at least two months.

Storage

This DIY hair treatment does not need special storage conditions. You can just put it in a clean glass container and place it under normal room temperature. Avoid storing it in high-temperature areas and direct sunlight. This is because the composition of the product may change. Lastly, avoid frequent opening of the jar to prevent contamination.

For some people, the hair is one of the most important parts of their body.  Healthy and thick hairs often enhance one’s personality and boost their confidence. If the hair becomes thin and starts to fall out, it is best to assess its causes and treatment. By using the DIY recipe presented above, you can regain your hair’s vitality and you can make your hair thick and strong once again.

DIY Bentonite Clay Hair Mask Recipes for Natural Hair

Most people spend a lot of time searching for a safe product to moisturize, de-frizz, detangle, and cleanse their hair. Daily blow-drying and using chemical-laden hair products can make curls brittle, lifeless, and dry.

If you are constantly facing this dilemma, why not concoct a DIY hair mask that naturally revives and conditions your tresses. One of the most effective hair masks for kinky hair uses a bentonite clay.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay (montmorillonite), also known as the Aztec Indian healing clay, is an aluminum phyllosilicate clay, which is produced by weathering the volcanic ash and exposing it to water.

The clay is mostly sourced from Fort Benton, Wyoming. For centuries, it was utilized by the indigenous people of the Andes, Central Africa, and Australia as an alternative medicine to heal dry skin, bug bites, and digestive troubles. The first recorded account of its usage was traced back to Mesopotamia.

At present, it is used as an excellent natural hair and skin care product.

What type of hair benefits best from Bentonite clay?

Bentonite clay is the perfect hair mask for every type of hair. It is best for people with black, thick, curly hair that need special care.

The Bentonite clay encourages curl definition by clumping them together. Using it as a mask or a rinse reduces frizz, knots, and tangles.

Benefits of Bentonite clay for hair:

It detoxifies hair.

Bentonite clay is anionic (negative-charged),  which means it attracts cationic (positive-charged) toxins. The detoxifying and clarifying effects happen when it is combined with apple cider vinegar or water. As you wash off the clay from your hair, you get rid of impurities, chemicals, heavy metals, and toxins from the scalp.

It protects hair from infections.

The anionic property of this clay cleanses excess oil and chemical build-up from the scalp, protecting it from fungal and bacterial infections. The antimicrobial properties of Bentonite clay prevent scalp irritation, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis.

It prevents or eliminates dandruff.

The itchy dandruff is produced by Malassezia fungus. The extra-sebum that your scalp secretes is the thriving place of this fungus. The Bentonite clay works by cleansing the extra sebum and scraping the accumulated dandruff on your scalp. Regular use of this clay hair mask prevents the formation of dandruff and makes your scalp inhospitable for the fungus.

It promotes hair growth.

Bentonite clay has potassium, calcium, and sodium. These minerals are vital for healthy hair growth. They cleanse hair follicles and remove dead skin cells from the scalp.

It adds luster to the hair.

Bentonite clay adds intense shine to your precious locks.

Other beauty/health benefits of Bentonite clay:

Beauty

It purifies skin pores – Bentonite clay acts as a sponge and magnet that cleanses the skin. It pulls out pollutants, free radicals, and bacteria effectively.

It absorbs excess oil – It balances the sebum level of the skin by absorbing excess sebum. Bentonite clay is ideal for people with oily complexion due to its super-absorbent ability.

It infuses minerals – By using it as body or face mask, you will reap the benefits of absorbing its mineral contents such as magnesium, silicon, calcium, and potassium.

It exfoliates the skin – It sloughs off old, flaky, dead skin cells, revealing a smoother, healthier, and softer complexion.

It detoxifies your body – When used as a bath detox, the Bentonite clay powder soothes inflammation and reduces swelling.

It clears blemishes – It is a perfect alternative to acne treatment. It gets rid of the primary causes of acne such as clogged pores, bacteria, dead skin cells, and excessive oil production.

It heals dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema – Its healing properties draw out bacteria and fungus from the skin. It is a topical antibiotic which soothes inflammation, calm skin infections, and facilitates the quick healing process.

It deodorizes – Bentonite clay effectively absorbs moisture and gets rid of odor-causing bacteria. Mix it with coconut oil, baking soda, and arrowroot flour to reap the benefit.

Health

Promotes pH balance – It is loaded with natural, alkalizing minerals that keep the pH level balanced.

Cleanses the digestive tract – It removes aflatoxins and other harmful gastrointestinal pathogens. Aflatoxins ingestion can cause digestive complaints, liver damage, impaired immune function, and dreadful debilitating illnesses. They are mostly found in foods that produce molds like grains and peanuts.

Supports healthy gut – Its ability to remove toxins promotes a robust gut environment, which in turn sustain a healthy digestive system and strong immune system.

Eliminates Fluoride – Oral use and consumption of this substance when added to water or dental products affects the developing brains of small children. Using it with magnesium as water filtration agent helps in the elimination of this neurotoxin.

Removes environmental toxins – Due to its magnetic properties, it is being eyed as an agent to remove VOCs that are present in cleaning supplies, paints, permanent markers, office equipment, and a lot of household products.

The Truth About Hair Loss - Male or Female Pattern Baldness

Hair is the crowning glory of women and men. Some people freak out when they have a bad hair day or find a lot of fallen strands. However, hair loss is normal. What is alarming is the unusual hair loss caused by male or female pattern baldness symptoms.

Normal Hair Loss versus Hair Pattern Baldness

Normal Hair Loss- The head of an adult has around 100,000-150,000 hair. Every day, around 50-100 hairs fall when you wash your hair while showering and brushing. So, don’t worry about hair shedding.

Women are more prone to hair loss because of regular heat styling, frequent hair coloring, pregnancy, and even menopause.

Hair Pattern BaldnessIt has two types depending on the gender of the person – male or female.

Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) – also known as androgenetic alopecia. Genetic and DHT or dihydrotestosterone are the main causes.

DHT causes hair follicles’ atrophy which shortens the hair growth cycle. The hair follicles also become paler in color and thinner. And because the growth phase is shorter, the hair follicles remain empty for a longer period of time, thus the lack of hair in some areas.

The receding hairline of men is an indication of this condition. The hair recedes at the front followed by the hair on top of the crown. The balding spots eventually grow larger and connect with each other.  For those afflicted, it usually begins at the age of 20 or 30s. Unfortunately, men notice that their hair is thinning when almost 50% of their hair is gone. The normal period for people to become bald is 15-25 years but some men experience it within 5 years after its initial occurrence.

Other male pattern baldness symptoms are hair shafts breakage, hair loss characterized by hair patches, hair loss associated with scaling, redness, rapid progression, and pain, as well as shedding of hair.

Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) – As a distinct effect of androgenetic alopecia, 40% of women show female pattern baldness symptoms before the age of 50.

The diffuse thinning of hair due to shedding or hair volume reduction causes a bald spot on head of a woman.  The pattern of balding is different from MPHL because of lesser production of androgens in the females’ bodies.

The cause is strongly associated with polygenetic predisposition. The genes are inherited from one or both parents. The real cause is not yet determined. When women with FPHL were tested to determine the androgen level in their bloodstream, the results showed a normal level.

The role of estrogen is also being studied because most women suffer hair loss after menopause. Studies showed that estrogens or lack of estrogens do not cause hair loss because they do not stimulate hair growth.

Recommended Safe Treatments

Topical solutions or Drugs

For men suffering from MPHL, hair loss can be reversed or slowed with medications during its early stage. The US Food and Drug Administration approved Finasteride and minoxidil as safe treatments for it.

Finasteride prevents the testosterone conversion into dihydrotestosterone in the scalp and other body tissues. Increased hair growth on the scalp is noticeably within 3 months of continued treatment. However, it is found to be more effective in the vertex part rather than the temples and front of the head.

Minoxidil induces the blood vessels dilation which can be contributory to hair growth.

Another product that shows effectiveness is the Ketoconazole shampoo. It contains antiandrogenic properties to arrest the balding effects. The shampoo also improves the seborrheic dermatitis condition which is known to aggravate hair loss. Other treatments that slow down the male pattern baldness symptoms are spironolactone, topilutamide (fluridil), alfatradiol, or spironolactone.

Hair Transplant Surgery

This is recommended for males with an advanced stage of MPHL who want full hair cover on the scalp. Hair transplant employs implanting follicular units in the scalp. They are implanted in close proximity into recipient sites or small incisions.

The hair grafts are obtained through:

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) – a strip of skin is extracted and dissected to produce several follicular unit grafts
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) – hairs are robotically (use ARTAS system) or manually extracted

For women with FPHL, treatments are available to treat the female pattern baldness symptoms. However, there is still no cure for the bald spot on head of a woman

It is also important to note that the positive response or hair growth does not apply to all who use the treatment. Some only experience slowing down of hair loss progress.

The most common treatment is minoxidil which is available in 5% and 2% solutions. Do not attempt to use stronger preparation to prevent scalp irritation and undesirable growth of hair on body parts other than your scalp.

Another treatment that significantly improves the growth of hair, enhances hair density, and reduces shedding is combining a low dose of oral spironolactone (25 mg) and minoxidil (0.25 mg) every day. Continue the treatment for a minimum of six months to reap the benefits. Long term treatment will maintain the positive result. Before you stop the treatment, ask your doctor’s approval first.

Hormonal treatment through oral intake of finasteride, flutamide, cyproterone, and spironolactone are found to block the androgens’ effects.

Hair transplant among women is also becoming popular.

DIY Homemade Shampoo with Goat’s Milk to Nourish Your Hair

Shampoo is the most commonly used hair care product around the world. Its main purpose is to cleanse the hair and nourish it. It is often use to treat dandruff, keep hair manageable, treat hair damage, and prevent hair fall.

Early shampoos were made from boiled herbs and natural oil. Moreover, soap and shampoo have been a part of everyone’s daily bath.

In Europe, shampoos were made from shaved soap with fragrances. It became popular because it had given shine and good scent to hair.

Today, shampoos are formulated to relieve oiliness, dryness, frizz, and damage from color treatment.

Types of Homemade Shampoo

Natural shampoos are classified according to their form. Organic shampoos can be bars, dry/powdered, or liquid.

Shampoo Bars

Shampoo bars have a good lathering ability. They are easy to use and can last long. You only need up to 3 strokes of soap lather across wet hair.

People love them because they are convenient to use and easy to carry. It may seem new to you, but these were used before liquid shampoos became popular.

Homemade shampoo bars are made from meticulously selected ingredients that help moisturize scalp and remove dirt on your hair. They are also environmental-friendly because they never require plastic bottles.

You are advised to wash your hair once a day using shampoo bars. Fortunately, these shampoos are mild and hypoallergenic so they are safe to use regularly.

Liquid Shampoos

Liquid shampoos are a form of homemade shampoo which has great foaming properties. These are easy to make and apply.

Organic liquid shampoos provide great hair care by only targeting unwanted oil and dirt on the scalp and hair. They are gentle but perform like commercial shampoos.

Liquid shampoos can be used thrice a week by people who have non-oily hair and once a day for those who have oily hair. This helps maintain the natural oil in the hair.

Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoos can be in a form of fast-drying spray or powder. This type of shampoo uses water-free method for cleansing the hair.

Dry shampoos absorb excess oil and leave the hair smelling fresh. These are a great alternative for those who do not want to wash their hair regularly.

These also help people save time while they refresh a style, add volume, conserve hair color, and eliminate odor.

Furthermore, this can only be used twice a week because dry shampoo can create irritation of the hair follicles.

Goat Milk as an Ingredient in Shampoo

Different hair care products are becoming more popular these days. However, people tend to forget that there are smarter, healthier products available. In this case, goat milk is the best example.

People are unaware of the possible effects of chemicals found in their commercial shampoos. They are probably clueless about the health benefits of goat milk too.

Goat milk shampoo gives a great lather while it effectively cleanses the hair. It also leaves the hair soft and smooth.

Choosing goat’s milk means avoiding toxic ingredients in shampoo. It also reaps the benefits of using a chemical-free shampoo.

Benefits of Goat’s Milk

Goat’s milk is rich in fatty acids and protein. Thus, it nourishes the hair thoroughly and keeps its natural shine.

It improves dry scalp and prevents dandruff, making it less prone to dryness and irritation.

It adds moisture to the hair.

It helps improve psoriasis, eczema, and other scalp conditions.

Other Beauty Uses of Goat’s Milk

Pure goat’s milk has lactic acid that is helpful in cleansing and eliminating skin impurities. Moreover, it contains alpha hydroxy acids that remove dead skin cells on the surface layer of the skin.

Goat’s milk contains vitamins A, C, B1, B6, D, and E. It also contains minerals such as iron, copper, selenium, and zinc that are also needed by the body to keep itself healthy inside and out.

It also prevents skin aging. Its powerful antioxidants keep the body from free radicals. Therefore, it results in delayed aging such as appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and dark circles.

Goat’s milk formulation in shampoo has balanced PH level that promotes healthy hair and scalp.

Harmful Effects of Excessive Shampooing

Shampoos are great partners for hygienic purposes. They give hair extra shine and strength. However, there are few harmful effects of using shampoo excessively.

Hair and Scalp Problems

Commercial shampoos have SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), a foaming agent and considered as the most toxic ingredients in shampoo. SLS can cause hair follicles damage and hair loss. Unfortunately, this can also cause skin inflammation. Therefore, if the hair and skin are exposed to frequent use of SLS, it can result to serious skin, hair, and scalp damage.

Asthma

Formaldehyde, a chemical present in shampoo, can cause chemical reaction. This triggers asthma, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Daily use of commercial shampoos may increase the risk of these conditions.

Growth of Fungus

Excessive use of shampoo removes oil that is actually needed by the hair and scalp. This forces the scalp to produce more oil. Thus, excessive oil causes fungus. This makes the head more prone to dandruff, skin irritation, rashes, and inflammation.

Dryness

Excessive washing of hair can cause brittleness and dryness. In worse cases, no matter what products you put into your hair, it just doesn’t style properly or style the way you want it. Experts say that healthy hair will always look good no matter how you choose to wear it or style it everyday.

What are the Most Common Types of Alopecia?

One of the common hair problems is alopecia, which refers to an autoimmune disorder characterized by hair loss. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system negatively affects a specific system in the body. In the case of alopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles, which lead to uprooting of hair. The hair loss attributed to alopecia is usually in the form of clumps or circles. The extent of hair loss depends on the strength of hair follicles. It may contribute to partial or total hair loss.

Main Types of Alopecia

Alopecia areata

It is a type of alopecia characterized by several coin-sized patches with irregular shape. These patches may be found on the scalp or any part of the body where hair grows. If it gets worse, it may lead to alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis. The patches are characterized by lighter skin tone due to less blood circulation in this area.

Alopecia totalis

It is a type of alopecia concentrated on the scalp wherein the entire scalp loses hair.

Alopecia universalis

It is a type of alopecia centered on body parts. It is an extreme case of alopecia areata wherein the entire body loses hair.

Diffuse alopecia areata

In this type of alopecia, the hair gets thinner all over the scalp. In extreme cases, the scalp is exposed as the formation of gaps between piles of hair occurs due to thinning. It is also referred as alopecia areata incognita.

Ophiasis alopecia

This type of alopecia involves losing hair across the occipital region of the head. Hair loss occurs at the lower back and sides of the head, leaving the upper portion with some hair. Among the types of alopecia, ophiasis tends to be more difficult to deal with. In some cases, the hair loss continues even if you take proper medication.

Androgenetic alopecia

It is a special type of alopecia wherein the scalp loses hair on one part only. This condition is hereditary and may possess a baldness pattern among relatives. It occurs on both men and women after puberty.

Postpartum alopecia

Postpartum alopecia occurs at the end of pregnancy with minimal hair loss. After three to nine months of giving birth, excessive shedding may occur. Do not worry if this happens to you during pregnancy since it is only temporary. The hair will regrow after approximately a year.

Traction alopecia

This type of alopecia is prevalent among women. Hair falls due to the application of pulling force, which occurs when hair tie is too tight. The pulling force causes hair to uproot from its follicle. Due to the pulling action, white bumps and scales are left on the scalp, which makes it rough and uneven.

Causes of Alopecia

Alopecia takes place when the immune system detects healthy cells as foreign substances. Since the immune system functions to protect the body, it will destroy all foreign substances, such as viruses and bacteria. Thus, the heathy cells that are mistakenly detected as foreign substances will be destroyed by the immune system. In response to the attacks of the immune system, hair follicles lose control and grip on the hair and stop producing hair. Until now, scientists have not yet found the cause of this response from the immune system.

Some studies show that alopecia is oftentimes observed in people who are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes. Hence, it is a postulate that alopecia is highly attributed to genetics.

Diagnosis of Alopecia

Alopecia is diagnosed through a series of examinations. First, one will be physically examined for occurring symptoms. Observations include the degree of hair fall and physical condition of hair when viewed in a microscope.

An advance way to examine the patient is through a scalp biopsy. In this method, the skin on the scalp is observed if any fungus is present, which may be triggering the hair loss. The doctor uses a machine to extract a tiny piece of skin on your scalp.

In some cases, blood test is performed to detect if the patient suffers from an autoimmune condition. In this method, the presence of abnormal antibodies is determined, which signifies that you suffer from an autoimmune disease.

Treatments for Alopecia

Not all treatments for alopecia can treat everyone diagnosed with this disease. The effect of these treatments depends on the age, degree of hair loss, and type of alopecia. These treatments commonly address and stop the attacks of immune system against hair follicles. Moreover, it also aims to stimulate hair regrowth.

Here are some of the most common treatments for alopecia:

Intralesional corticosteroid injections

This form of treatment is commonly done to people diagnosed with alopecia areata. It injects corticosteroids into round, hair-less patches on the skin. The injections are performed once every four weeks. It is performed by a licensed dermatologist.

Pros:

Upon receiving injections, you may expect a faster hair regrowth within four weeks. Another advantage is that it is easy and fast to conduct so it will be less hassle for you.

Cons:

The injections only function for hair regrowth and do not address or stop hair loss. If not done properly, the injections may cause a temporary skin depression, also known as dells. Moreover, the patient may feel a bit of discomfort due to the pricking of needle and stingy sensation as the corticosteroids penetrate the scalp.

Topical minoxidil

This treatment directly applies a solution with 5% topical minoxidil on the hairless portion of the scalp or skin. The solution helps stimulate hair regrowth. It is also used by some people for growing eyebrows and beard.

Pros:

Unlike some medications, one can immediately stop applying the topical minoxidil if he/she is already satisfied with the results of the hair regrowth. Moreover, it is easy to apply and has few known side effects.

Cons:

This treatment can only be used on its own for treating mild alopecia. It must be complemented with another treatment if it is done for extensive alopecia.

Anthralin cream or ointment

It is a tar-like cream used for treating mild alopecia. The ointment is spread on the hairless portion of the skin once a day. After soaking it for thirty to sixty minutes, it is washed off with lukewarm water.

Pros:

It can stimulate hair regrowth within eight to twelve weeks. It is easy to apply and widely accessible.

Cons:

If the skin is sensitive, it may result to skin irritation, which may cause darkening of the skin. This condition usually occurs if the anthralin is left for more than the required time of soaking.

Topical corticosteroids

Instead of injections, topical corticosteroids are also available in the market. It is gradually applied on the hairless portion of the skin. It acts as a soothing agent for the inflammation at the surface of hair follicle. It may be bought in the form of lotion, cream, ointment, foam, or solution.

Pros:

Hair regrowth can increase up to 25% when using highly potent topical corticosteroids. It is widely accessible and may be bought in most drug stores.

Cons:

The effectiveness of this treatment highly depends on the amount absorbed by the skin. The absorption is directly proportional to the size of skin pores. Hence, its effectiveness varies from person to person.

How to Begin Your Natural Hair Transitioning Journey

In 2011, chemically formulated hair straighteners and dyes have become prevalent. The hair straighteners are used to straighten natural kinky hairs while the dyes are applied to enhance the hair aesthetically by changing its color. However, continuous use of these products entails a certain extent of hair damage depending on the amount of application. Due to this arising problem from chemical substances, many people, nowadays, prefer to maintain their natural hair.

What is Natural Hair?

Natural hair is basically defined as the hair that has not undergone any physical alteration using chemically formulated substances like relaxers and dyes. Depending on your genes, you may have a different type of natural hair from others. Some hair types include afro, large curls, small curls, wavy, and straight hair. The hair texture also differs from one type to another. Some hair textures include frizzy, smooth, and oily.

Hair can still be called natural if it has undergone a physical alteration that would not last for a long time. For instance, pressed hair using flat iron is still considered natural since it transforms back to its initial state after washing.

In terms of characteristics, natural hair has a wide array of features. One person may not have the same hair with another person. However, similarities between individuals can be observed when the characteristics are categorized into texture, color, glow, and overall shape. A combination of these characteristics defines a unique natural hair.

Many people are now embracing their natural hair, which constitutes its appearance and color. One main reason is that people learn to accept the differences among races and realize the beauty of natural hair.

What is Chemically Processed or Relaxed Hair?

People, who are born with curly hair, usually opt to straighten their hair through a process called relaxing. This hair straightening process involves disrupting of disulfide bonds present in the strand follicle and permanently restraining them from reformation. Such bonds are responsible for creating a wavy form of hair. This process is initially introduced to bring “controlled damage”, wherein the alteration of hair does not lead to frizzy and unhealthy hair. However, the process contributes greater damage when performed repetitively.

Natural hair usually appears strong and smooth, but it can be damaged as chemicals penetrate the strands and roots. Hence, chemically processed or relaxed hair requires regular application of moisturizers and conditioners. In addition, it must not be exposed to direct heat to reduce drying and uneven tone of hair.

When Should One Consider Transitioning?

Chemically processed or relaxed hair has its own advantages and disadvantages as compared to natural hair. A person should consider transitioning from relaxed hair into natural hair when its disadvantages dominate.

Some people often undergo transitioning if they want to maintain healthy hair and embrace their identity. Relaxed hair often leads to damaged hair due to over-processing, repetitive, and/or improper chemical application. Such hair is more sensitive to prolonged sunlight exposure and thus, chemicals coating the hair may entail negative effects to the hair due to the temperature rise in the immediate surroundings.

Another reason why people should opt for transitioning is when they start to experience hair fall-out. Chemical relaxers applied on your scalp create hazardous environment for hair growth. Thus, the roots tend to lose its strength and eventually, scalp experiences hair fall.

Hair thinning is commonly experienced due to repetitive hair relaxing. People often want to grow their hair thick as it is commensurate with healthy hair. Thus, if you prefer thick and healthy hair, you may start transitioning back to your natural hair.

Pros and Cons of Transitioning

If you are torn on deciding whether to undergo hair transitioning or not, then you have to weigh its pros and cons. Given below are some of the pros and cons of hair transitioning to its natural state.

Pros

You will learn to appreciate the beauty of natural curls. Each hair type has its own distinct features that make someone stand out. As you transition to your natural hair, you’ll begin to love your hair grooves and enjoy styling it. It has a distinct pattern that can remain beautiful and in-style without putting hairpins on or ponytails.

Embrace a healthier hair. As you refuse from using harmful hair products, you free your hair from possible hair fall, split ends, and breakage. However, healthy hair can be achieved and maintained by following a consistent haircare regime. Just be careful on choosing the appropriate product for your hair so that it can be as manageable as you want.

You are about to enter a wide array of styling trends due to its different wave patterns. Some must-try styling patterns for curly hairs include braids, knots, wash-and-go, two-strand twist, and afros.

You will be more confident to represent yourself as you embrace your real identity. Although the pre- and post-response of people undergoing the transition process differs for every person, it starts to unleash your self-appreciation and finally disregard your self-doubt. Being able to be proud of your true self is the most fulfilling part of hair transitioning.

Cons

It tends to be costly since you will need to procure several conditioning products and tools. This is usually experienced by those people who prefer slow-and-steady transitioning. If you don’t want it to be costly, you may want to try “big chop”, which refers to cutting a large portion of hair, leaving the naturally grown out hairs.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. Others may or may not like your decision about transitioning. Their comments may be encouraging or discouraging, which may alter your decision. Always remember that it is helpful to hear and comprehend their comments, but the final decision must come from you.

Five simple steps to help one begin their natural hair transitioning journey

To start your journey to natural hair, you need to fulfill the following steps:

Establish your commitment

Hair transitioning may take a long period of time before you reach a full-grown natural hair. Hence, it requires you to establish a strong commitment to achieve your goal. Aside from its duration, you will be more likely to deal with your own insecurities, self-doubt, fears, and prejudices with regards to your natural hair as it represents your identity. Hence, the initial step is to assess yourself about how eagerly you want to undergo transitioning.

Choose a method that you are comfortable with.

Hair transitioning may be done by undergoing either of the two processes: “big chop” or slow-and-steady transitioning. “Big chop” is a process where you cut a huge portion of your hair and allow it to grow from there onwards. On the other hand, the slow-and-steady transitioning requires greater amount of time as you condition and maintain your hair with non-hazardous hair products while your natural hair grows.

Establish your hair regimen.

A hair regimen is a series of haircare processes that you need to perform regularly to nourish your hair. It takes trial-and-error to find suitable haircare products depending on your hair characteristics. A common hair regimen includes cleansing, softening, deep conditioning, and moisturizing.

For each process, you can buy different hair products, either organic or with non-hazardous chemicals. In buying these products, you should always read the components to check if you are not allergic to these products. If your hair is sensitive, you can opt to buy hypoallergenic products, but they are usually available at a higher price.

Invest on essential hair products and tools.

A healthy hair is an end-product of regular haircare regimen. You should not skip your haircare regimen. Hence, you should have regular stock of haircare products. Aside from that, it would be helpful to procure some tools including hair pins, clips, and spray bottles, which can be used in styling your hair.

Learn to do different hairstyles.

Curly hair tends to be messy if not managed properly. To look neat, you may want to clip on your hair or tie it in a bun. By doing this, you look more presentable and your hair will not hide your beautiful face.

Products and Tools One Should Have on Deck When Beginning the Natural Hair Journey

As you try to make your hair as manageable as it can be, you will need the following products and tools in your journey to natural hair:

Tools for Detangling

For curly hair, you need a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. Narrow-tooth combs are not advisable since it becomes hard to pull when used on curly hair. You may also need spray bottles to moisten your hair with water or “slick” conditioner. It will become easier to detangle. Another common tool is the tangle teezer, which is a type of hair brush that detangles your hair like finger detangling. You may also use a denman brush, which is made of nylon bristles. It is helpful for even distribution of conditioner.

Tools for Conditioning

From time to time, you may want to condition your hair through soaking into hot oil or hair spa. In doing this, you need a plastic cap to hold your hair in a stable position as it absorbs the replenishing ingredients of the haircare product. An optional tool is the applicator bottle, which can serve as a storage bottle and applicator of your hair creams and conditioners.

Hair Products

For cleansing, you need a hydrating shampoo that would cleanse your hair from its strands up to your scalp. You also need a conditioner to ensure that your hair remains soft and unruly. To maintain the natural glow of your hair, you will need to soak it in hot oils or hair spa once a month. It is advisable to avoid using products with intense chemicals. You may also opt to organic regimen such as using honey and banana for conditioning your hair.

Tools for hair drying

After washing your hair, you need a microfiber towel to completely absorb the excess water after rinsing it. It is optional to use a hot air dryer. If this tool is not available, you may opt to comb your hair in front of a fan to easily dry it. It is important to dry your hair immediately to avoid dirt from accumulating.

There are a lot of hair treatments that you can buy in the grocery or drug stores. You may perform do-it-yourself hair treatments, but it is best to seek advice first from a hair expert before doing so. If you are not confident to perform it by yourself, you can go to a hair salon and ask a hair expert to provide you with hair conditioning treatment regularly. If something unexpected or suspicious happens to your hair resulting from do-it-yourself hair treatments, do not hesitate to consult a hair expert and perform an immediate home remedy.

Aloe Vera contains Vitamin A and Vitamin E, which are responsible for moisturizing hair and prevent breaking and drying. With sufficient amount of these substances, the hair is maintained with healthy follicles, improved hair growth, and smooth and silky appearance. This hair oil constitutes coconut oil and rosemary essential oil, which helps in minimizing hair fall and enhance blood circulation.

Ingredients

2 pcs. aloe vera leaf

5 drops of rosemary essential oil (optional)

½ cup of coconut oil

How to Make

Cut the aloe vera leaf into tiny pieces. Using a mortar and pestle, grind the leaf to extract its juice. Mix it with one-half cup of coconut oil. Let the mixture simmer under low heat for approximately 7 minutes. Let the mixture cool afterwards. When the mixture is already cooled, add five drops of rosemary essential oil and mix until evenly distributed. Transfer the mixture in a dark container.

Application

Using a spatula or applicator, apply a generous amount of mixture on your hair. Make sure to apply the mixture on your scalp too.

Storage

Put the container in a cool, dark place. It can last only up to 2 weeks.

Top 10 Healthy Hair Care Regimen Tips for Men

Don’t think that if you’re a guy, you should just be contented with wash and wear hair. Your hair is your crowning glory and also says a lot about your hygiene.

Men’s and women’s hair care regimens are almost similar. The slight differences may be due to men’s more active lifestyle and that they always keep their hair short. The hair care products that men and women use also affect the hair quality. However, men’s and women’s hair are just the same. Therefore, men should care for their men as much as women do.

Top 10 Hair Mistakes

Most men feel that they just need to wash their hair, dry it off and they’re good to go. However, your daily activities may be damaging your hair. Here are some common habits and what you need to do:

Using hot water every day – A hot bath is a relaxing way to end the day. However, using hot water every day is not good as it dries your hair, strips off the hair’s essential oils, and causes it to be more brittle. Exposing the hair to constant heat such as hot water damages the hair and may even cause hair loss.

What to do:

Use lukewarm water instead of hot water. Otherwise, after showering, run colder (not too cold) water on your hair to cool it. Try to adjust the water temperature that is comfortable for you. After that, use a revitalizing hair conditioner to nourish the hair and restore moisture. You can try Brickell Men’s Revitalizing Hair Conditioner for Men, which consists of natural and organic ingredients. The essential oils promote hair growth and soothe the scalp, while Vitamin E and aloe provides moisture.

Constant exposure to the sun – Sunlight is not only bad for the skin but for the hair, too. As mentioned previously, too much heat dries your hair and damages it.

What to do:

Wear hats or bring an umbrella. Ever wonder why women always wear hats or carry parasols when it’s sunny? One of the reasons is to protect their hair from the damaging rays of the sun.

You can also use a scent-free leave-in conditioner such as The Particular Man Conditioner Leave-In Continual Moisturizing. This leave-in conditioner protects your hair from being bleached by the sun and has no unpleasant scent.

Using damaging hair care products – Men like to keep the hair short, and they also want to look good. Most men use damaging hair products such as styling gels or clays. These products may contain harsh ingredients such as fragrances, alcohol, sulfates, and parabens.

What to do:

If you really need to use these products to style your hair, make sure that you wash off the products at the end of the day. Use a mild but cleansing hair shampoo and conditioner such as Dove Men+Care 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner, Fresh and Clean. It deeply cleans the hair while nourishing it. It also contains menthol and caffeine to invigorate hair and keep it healthy and nourished all the time.

Drying your hair wrong – Rubbing your hair hard with a towel is not the proper way. The best way is to pat it dry with a towel, however, this is challenging for men because of short hair.

What to do:

Try the DuraComfort Essentials Super Absorbent Anti-Frizz Microfiber Hair Towel. This microfiber towel absorbs moisture well from your hair and does not cause frizz. Its soft and gentle fibers are suitable for thin, fine, coarse, short hair. Just wrap it around your hair to dry while you shave.

Incorrect use of hair tools – If you think that using a brush is a cheap and economical way to groom your hair, think again. Wet hair is at its most vulnerable. Avoid using a brush or heating tools such as hair dryers.

What to do:

Use a wide-toothed comb to untangle your hair, no matter how short. In case you use a fine-toothed comb, use your fingers to untangle your hair first, so you avoid pulling them out.

Using tight hats – If you must wear baseball caps, wear them only when necessary. Tight hats may cause “traction alopecia” which causes baldness because the hair is pulled out of the scalp when it gets stuck to the hat. Tight hats can also damage the hair cuticle and lead to breakage. Same goes if you’re a guy who has long hair and likes pulling it back in a ponytail.

What to do:

If you must wear hats remove them when indoors to let your hair breathe. If you wear your hair long, avoid very tight ponytails. Also, never tie your hair when wet.

Try the Goody Ouchless Ponytail Hair Elastics, which contain no metal and are gentle on hair.

Not watching your health – A healthy hair means a healthy lifestyle. When you are unhealthy, your hair is dry, dull, and you might also have dandruff. Stress can also cause dandruff.

What to do:

Exercise regularly or go for long walks, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, practice stress management, and avoid negativity. You may also need vitamin supplements such as Omega 3 Fish Oil Pills 180 SOFTGELS. These vitamins promote healthy hair and skin and are also good for heart health and maintaining your weight.

Improper washing of hair – Some men wash their hair once or twice a week, while some over wash their hair. Not cleaning your hair regularly is as bad as over washing your hair.

Washing your hair cleanses it of impurities. However, don’t get fooled by shampoo ads that tell you to wash, rinse, and repeat. Once is enough, and make sure you use the proper shampoo and conditioner that’s best for you.

What to do:

If you have oily hair or dandruff, use this natural shampoo with essential rosemary lemon and jojoba basil that effectively detoxifies your hair while moisturizing it.

Exposure to chlorine – If you swim frequently, pool chlorine is damaging to your hair and causes it to be brittle.

What to do:

If you cannot avoid swimming in a chlorinated pool, rinse your hair and apply a mild conditioner such as Silk18 Natural Hair Conditioner Argan Oil Sulfate Free Treatment for Dry and Damaged Hair before you take a swim. Use a reliable swim cap such as Turata Waterproof Swimming Cap whenever you hit the pool.

Not conditioning your hair – If you think that only women should condition their hair, you’re wrong. Men’s and women’s hair are the same. Conditioning your hair does not make you less of a man. In fact, conditioning your hair defines your crowning glory and makes you look better.

What to do:

If you don’t want to buy conditioner from the store, you can use egg yolks to condition your hair. Just break one egg and massage it on your hair and scalp. Leave it on for 10 minutes, rinse and shampoo as usual. The protein from egg yolks will penetrate into your scalp and strengthen your hair follicles.

Conclusion

Your hair is your crowning glory. Don’t think that you need to pay for expensive treatments to a salon just like women do. Simply buying the correct products, regularly and properly cleansing and conditioning your hair, and practicing a healthy lifestyle can lead to healthy-looking, clean, and gorgeous (or handsome) hair.

5 Shampoos for Type 4C Natural Hair

As with the human skin, different hair types require different hair care products and regimen. Coined as one’s “crowning glory,” a person’s hair can certainly say a lot about his or her ethnicity, style, personality, and even hygiene.

People are born with either naturally straight (to wavy) hair or naturally curly hair. In general, the human hair may be classified into 4 types:

Type 1 for Straight Hair,
Type 2 for Wavy Hair,
Type 3 for Curly Hair,
and Type 4 for Kinky or Afro Hair.

Characterized by a zigzag pattern, Type 4 hair is usually extremely wiry and tightly coiled, giving it a fragile and delicate nature. A common misconception is that this hair type does not grow. In fact, kinky hair can grow as long as any other hair type. However, since it is known to be the driest among all hair types, it is most prone to breakage and may even exhibit shrinkage tendencies. Thus, utmost care and proper treatment is required to maintain these natural locks.

Depending on curl pattern, texture, density, and moisture retention, Type 4 hair is further divided into 3 groups: 4A, 4B, and 4C. Of all Type 4 hair types, 4C requires the most care as it is the most fragile.

Typically, men and women with 4C hair type experience hair shrinkage by up to 70%. This means that the hair, when not stretched out, may look much shorter than it actually is. In addition, 4C is the most tightly coiled Type 4 hair. As such, it has no defined curl pattern and has less definition compared to 4B and 4A types. To achieve a more defined curl pattern, men and women with 4C hair may need to braid, twist, or shingle through their hair strands with a specific styling technique, coupled with appropriate hair products.

Protective hairstyles such as buns, braids, and twists may also be sported to avoid further breakage, since these styles involve minimal to no combing or brushing.

Sporting protective hairstyles and using the right kind of hair products is the key to effectively maintain these gorgeous locks. With 4C hair’s dry nature, it is a must to moisturize it every day, to keep it healthy, shiny, and beautiful. It is also important to choose hair products that are free from harmful chemicals such as sulfate, as these further contribute to hair’s dryness and breakage in the long run.

Check out these top all-natural shampoo recommendations that are great for 4C hair type:

10 Best Products for Type 4c Hair Growth

Growing your hair longer, especially if you have kinky hair, can be a challenge. It’s not only enough to use a hair growth shampoo, you may also need other products to encourage healthy hair growth like combs, serums, and conditions. Moreover, you may also want to take vitamins, especially the ones that encourage hair growth.

Growing hair can be a bigger challenge if you have kinky hair. Now, there are three types of kinky hair – 4a, 4b, and 4c. The 4a hair has a nearly-defined “s-shaped” curl pattern. The 4b hair looks like fluffy cotton and has a “z-shaped” pattern.

The 4c hair is like 4b, but only coiled tightly. In its natural state, there’s no definitive curl pattern. The coils need to be defined by braiding, twisting, or shingling through the strands.

If you have 4c hair, your hair may seem short even if it’s actually long. Many people with 4c hair can have hair shrinkage of 70% or even more. If your hair is actually 10” long, it may look like it is only 3” long if you don’t stretch your hair out.

Why Use Different Products?

The 4c hair is the most fragile hair type. Thus, you can see the need to use hair products that are unique to you, and don’t damage your hair. Growing your 4c hair can be a delicate matter, so you need to be extra careful.

Some of the things you need to do to take care of your 4c hair and let it grow out beautifully include LOC (liquid, oil, cream) in moisture, deep conditioning, protective styling, gentle detangling, co-washing your hair, getting rid of split ends, avoiding too many products, and pampering your hair at night.

Below are the 10 best products for 4c hair growth. If you don’t have 4c hair, you may use these hair products as well. However, if your hair is of a fragile 4c, you may want to use these hair care and hair growth products religiously if you want healthy, long curls.
