Hair Oil Infusions - Your Natural Hair Care Arsenal

Today, more and more people are starting to realize the importance of Natural Hair Care. For far too long, too many of us have been sold the false narrative that laboratories and manufacturers can ‘fix’ our hair worries. Unfortunately, their offerings are often filled with chemicals that can hurt us, even as they aim to help our wilting locks.

The list of the harmful chemicals added to Commercially processed hair care products is exhaustive, yet the main offenders found in many store-bought brands include: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and Isopropyl Alcohol. While all these ingredients are added for a specific purpose, they also have negative side effects that can damage our health AND our hair. SLS, used as an emulsifier in cleansers, can strip hair of its natural oils, leading to dry and brittle strands that break easily. Propylene Glycol is used to increase shine, yet it does this by breaking down the hair strand itself, leading to increased damage and skin irritation from exposure. Isopropyl Alcohol is used to dissolve oil, yet the oils it is dissolving in your hair are the precious, natural ones your hair needs!

Instead of drowning your hair in chemicals and hard to pronounce ingredients, you can choose natural, organic hair care products and oils that are truly beneficial to your locks – and can be made right at home! Making the switch from store bought to homemade is easier than you think. This book, You Hair Care Arsenal, offers 25 easy to follow and make DIY Recipes that can help you achieve the bouncy, healthy mane of hair you deserve, starting today!

Herbs and oils replace chemicals in DIY hair care products, offering natural solutions to your common hair problems. For a more in-depth look at which herbs to use or what oils are beneficial for YOUR particular worry, please be sure to check out Your Hair Care Arsenal. Beautiful, Healthy Hair Starts With Homemade DIY Recipes

Hair is big business, and it’s easy to see why. It is one of the first things people notice about you, and unlike make-up or the trendiest of fashions, your hair is always with you. How you treat it and how you choose to condition it, defines how IT will treat you. We all want our manes to be healthy, bouncy and beautiful, yet often the products we are told to use on our locks sap its vitality with chemicals and synthetic ingredients that not only damage our hair, but can damage our health as well.

These chemicals, like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Triclosan, Polysorbates and even certain Fragrances strip our hair of its natural oils and absorb into our largest and most permeable organ… our skin. While many scientists are still deciding the safety of additives used in commercially produced hair products, they do agree on one thing – we should probably avoid them. Yet finding conditioners that do not include harmful ingredients can be challenging, unless you make them yourself.

Luckily, making your own hair conditioners and treatments at home is easy, fun and healthy. In fact, you probably already have all the ingredients you need for an indulgent hair mask hidden in your kitchen cupboard right now!

You can find 35 hair conditioner recipes, using all-natural ingredients, listed in A DIY Guide for All Things Natural Hair. This book lays out the foundation for DIY Natural Hair Care – no matter your particular hair situation. Dull, thinning, curly, frizzy, damaged, oily, dry… there is something for everyone here, with tips designed to help you pick just the right homemade conditioner and hair rinse recipes for YOUR hair.

Beautiful, healthy hair is achievable right at home, at a fraction of the cost of store bought brands. You can rest easy knowing that you are nourishing your hair with all-natural ingredients, while avoiding chemicals and synthetic additives that can hurt your health.

DIY hair care is the wave of the future, and it starts right at home.

To Be, or Not to Be – Natural?

Is your crowning glory in need of a change?

No matter our hair type, texture or length, many of us reach a point when we decide to do something big with our hair. For some, it’s a change in color. For others, it’s a dramatic cut. Sometimes we just choose to go on a healthy hair journey. Another big decision in the hair world is deciding whether or not to go natural.

Going natural is a great place to start, although it’s more like returning to being natural. But what exactly does being natural mean?

What is Natural Hair?

Simply put, hair whose texture has not been chemically altered is referred to as “natural hair.” This means you can straighten your hair with a flat iron, or curl it with a curling wand for example, and still have natural hair. On the other hand, the use of relaxers or texturizers would mean that the hair is not referred to as natural.

Going natural can sometimes feel a little scary, particularly if you’ve lived with chemically treated or severely damaged hair for the large majority of your life (hands up if you’ve been there). Not to mention the (painful) childhood memories of our hair being combed by someone else. No wonder you’re on the fence about it! Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Why Should You Go Natural?

Get to Know Your Hair Again

What better way to get to know your hair again than by starting from scratch. Whether you choose to cut it all off and start again or slowly grow out your hair and transition to natural, you will now have to deal with your hair in its natural state. Don’t be scared, embrace the process. With some helpful information, a little patience and the right products, you’ll soon find your hair flourishing.

Save Money on Maintenance

The thing with applying chemicals to your hair is you have to keep doing it. For many of us, that means going to a professional, and that costs money. Once you go natural, that maintenance cost no longer exists – meaning more money in your pocket.

No More Lifestyle Conflicts

When your natural hair is relaxed or permed, you tend to avoid water until wash day, which is understandable. But for those who swim and exercise regularly, avoiding water is impossible, and styling your hair may become a problem. When you go natural you have the option to wash and go or style your hair for exercise, so that even if it gets wet, you’re still good to go. Talk about versatility!

Embrace Your Natural Beauty

You, just as you are, are beautiful. Accepting and loving yourself in your natural state is something everyone should experience. The confidence that comes with that radiates outward and into every other aspect of your life. Soon you’ll find yourself conquering the world!

Positive Influence

There are so many people who grow up believing that they have bad hair. By simply wearing your hair in its natural state you are changing people’s perceptions of how they view themselves and others. Your hair will teach others that there is no such thing as “bad hair,” and that all hair, no matter how different, is beautiful.

The Frustrating Side of Natural Hair

Many people get disappointed when they go natural and find that the effort involved is way more than they bargained for. The assumption is that natural hair requires less work. Not necessarily. Dealing with natural hair requires a lot of patience and work. The truth is when your hair is natural it does what it wants – and that can be really frustrating.

If you’re transitioning, you’re dealing with at least two textures. If you decide to cut it all off (the big chop), you’re dealing with an entirely new head of hair. At different points in your hair journey, your hair changes and that will mean getting to know it all over again.

Essentially, the main negative point is natural hair requires work – some textures more than others. But don’t be discouraged, we at Clishea have got you covered!

Natural Hair is a Personal Journey

Deciding to go natural is a personal choice. Not everyone has the same reasons for choosing this journey, and that’s ok. We suggest doing a lot of research before deciding to take the plunge. You’re not alone; we at Clishea are here to help you along the way.

Our products are made from nature’s finest ingredients, are free from harmful chemicals and are suitable for all hair types – from straight to coily and everything in between! No need to conform to society’s standards of beauty. Set your own! Step out as the confident, beautiful queen you are and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

The End of Bad Hair Days

By a show of hands, who has experienced a bad hair day? If your hand didn’t go up, you must be a magical creature from a mythical land.

The thing about bad hair days is they sneak up on us; and at the most inconvenient times too. Either when we’re late and don’t have much time to do anything about it, or when we’re out and about and just happen to bump into our exes or friends from high school that will no doubt look like they walked off a catwalk.

It’s pretty safe to say that we all want our hair to cooperate with us. Sometimes it doesn’t (ok, most times,) but when it does, we wear it with a certain pride and confidence like no other. We at Clishea want to arm you with an arsenal of hacks that will help you defeat the enemy that is bad hair days.

Cover Up!

Cap, beanie, scarf or hat – the quickest fix for the day-that-shall-not-be-named is to cover it up. The downside is this might not work depending on where you’re going. We’re pretty sure your colleagues will ask questions if you show up to work with a hat you refuse to take off all day. Covering your hair when appropriate is a great way to hide the frizzy mess that is your hair without having to put in too much effort. If you want to multitask, spritz your hair lightly with water and add any CliShea Conditioner for treatment on the go.

Bun it!

Ah, buns… The hair gods’ gift to mankind. Buns are perfect for any occasion, be it formal or casual, and work well with any outfit. Whether your hair is frizzy, tangled, limp or not fully dried, buns can disguise that mess quickly. Who doesn’t love a messy bun? If you’re going for a more sleek look or really want to tame your edges, spritz your hair lightly with water, add your favorite gel or edge control, brush back, bun it and tie a scarf around our edges to set them in place while you get dressed. Remove the scarf (or don’t) when you’re ready to go and you’ve got yourself a style! Feel free to plump up your bun with some extensions if your hair is looking a little limp.

Braids and Twists

For those who have mastered the technique of braiding or twisting, you’ll want to take advantage of these styles. There are so many varieties of braids and twists, as well as so many hairstyles you can morph them into – like buns and other updo's. Braids look great even if you haven’t washed your hair in a while, so go on and rock them!

Prep Your Hair the Night Before

Just because your hair looks great now, doesn’t mean it will look the same tomorrow – especially if you do nothing to try

Sleep on a satin pillowcase to help prevent moisture loss and frizz
Put your hair up into a loose “pineapple” – this involves loosely tying your hair as high on your head as possible. Perfect for preserving curls.
Loosely twist your hair up to keep it stretched and avoid tangles
Cover your hair with a satin scarf
Moisturize your hair by lightly spritzing it with water and sealing in that moisture with any of Clishea’s shea butters

Come morning, your hair will be tame enough to rock your favorite hairstyle!

Carry a Hair-emergency Kit

As we mentioned earlier, bad hair days can sneak up on you when you least expect it. You may have left home with perfect tresses, but sometime during the day your hair decided to misbehave. There’s no time to go home and fix your hair! Make sure you carry an emergency hair kit that will help save the day. Include:

A small spray bottle with water
Your favorite oil
Travel-size gel or cream
Hair ties
Bobby pins

These items can easily fit in your handbag, your car or desk-draw at the office. It’s always better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have!

Accessorize!

Don’t be afraid to use fancy hair clips, bobby pins, headbands and hair ties. Apart from keeping your hair in check, they can actually add to your overall look – stopping people from scrutinizing your hair too much.

Take Care of Your Hair and Your Hair will Take Care of You

Bad hair days happen to the best of us, but the healthier your hair, the easier it becomes to get rid of these dreadful days. Clishea’s range of natural hair products will leave your hair healthy, strong and manageable. Put bad hair days behind you and go about your days with confidence!
