9 Reasons Gluten May Make You Gain Weight!

Happy Tuesday! – This is a guest blog post by The diet detective AKA Heidi Moretti, MS, RD who I met via LinkedIn!  https://www.dietdetectiverd.com/single-post/9-Reasons-Gluten-May-Make-You-Gain-Weight

Excess weight can be tied to many food and eating patterns.  One that many people may not think about is gluten.

How can gluten cause weight gain?.  Any food that may cause inflammation in the body may also lead to weight gain. When gluten intolerance or allergy occurs, so does inflammation. Gluten spins a lot of controversy.  First, let’s consider what the headlines have really told us so far. Then, I will describe the many ways gluten may be making you put on the pounds.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is simply a type of protein in grains: it is in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats.

Why Are Headlines Sometimes Wrong About Gluten?

Headlines and research can make some pretty big errors when talking about food and diet.

A recent study about gluten got a lot of press.  It stated that gluten-free diets were less healthy than gluten-containing diets [R].  They indicated that gluten-free diets slightly increased risk of heart disease.

What was missing in these headlines? A lot. The study started over 25 years ago.  It collected information about what people eat regularly. The last diet measurements took place in 2010, before the big surge and trends in gluten free diets,

In fact, gluten-free diets became popular in 2009-2010.  I’m sure people did not have time to develop heart disease specific to gluten-free during this short of a time period.  So how is it even responsible to look at this topic effectively [R]?  Perhaps the biggest research error; not enough time passed to assess heart disease risk.

This creates an error by omission;  gluten-free products were rare in the marketplace at that time and prior to that.

New agricultural practices for gluten-containing crops weren’t present when the study took place, such as crop desiccation. This is the practice of spraying a weed killer on grains days before harvest, often wheat, soy, and corn.

Who Ate Gluten Free Products in the Study?

People seeking out gluten-free products in this study most likely had a disease called Celiac disease. This is a disease which increases mortality, has a lot of inflammation and more. Celiac disease increases risk of heart disease dramatically. It seems obvious that they would find what they did, but they didn’t talk about why in the headlines.

The study also didn’t look at complete gluten exclusion as well. They were looking at levels of gluten intake [R].

Simply cutting back gluten likely won’t help a person with Celiac disease or an intolerance.  The damage from inflammation can still occur when eating small amounts. A study can only be as good as the design, and in this case, they questions didn’t get answered with the poor design.

What happens to people with gluten sensitivity?

Gluten sensitivity is real and up to 30% of the population has it. Gluten sensitivity creates an abnormal immune response in the body, including abnormal T cell response [R]. The only way to diagnose gluten sensitivity is through elimination of gluten at this time. When someone eliminates a sensitivity, it can help with weight loss, sometimes quickly.

Why do they get better? And why do they often get leaner, sometimes very quickly?

1, Gluten Can Make Your Immune System Out of Balance

Immune responses to gluten can create danger signals in the body, which shunt nutrients in undesirable ways.  One result: body can become hungrier and bigger.

Clinicians all over the country are slowly learning for themselves that people  can become better. They can even heal very serious illness, and perhaps lose weight, with a gluten-free diet as part of a balanced diet [R].

Take the work of Dr. Terry Wahls as an example. She had progressive multiple sclerosis.  Both in her life and in her research she found great success with this: a gluten-free diet  plus copious amounts of vegetables and other healthy habits.

Her progressive, debilitating disease was lifted with gluten free, healthy diet. Her research is showing similar results.

Another finding in her research: her diet plan is very healthy and well-rounded; she has almost complete recovery [R].

Multiple sclerosis is a disease of imbalanced immunity and diet plays a powerful impact on the course of the disease.

Imbalanced immunity can occur even with subtle gluten intolerance.

2. Gluten Causes Inflammation

Gluten can cause inflammation.  In animal studies, gluten increased inflammatory chemicals in the blood, and led to weight gain, obesity and diabetes [R] [R]

In people who are sensitive to gluten, they may experience inflammation throughout the body, even in the nervous system and gut [R]. Inflammation can slow down weight loss or cause weight gain.

3. Gluten Increases Zonulin

Gluten increases a protein called zonulin in the digestive tract.  The higher the zonulin levels, the more likely a person has obesity, bigger waists, and high cholesterol [R].

Gluten is not the only food that changes zonulin in the body, but it is one of many factors [R].

4. Gluten May Cause Leaky Gut

Gluten can increase gut permeability or leaky gut, which drives inflammation in the body [R].  Inflammation due to leaky gut can make it difficult to lose weight.  This is because inflammation can stall fat loss.

5. Gluten May Make Your Body Starve for Nutrients

Inflammation can block nutrient use and metabolism in the body.  When the body thinks it is short of nutrients, it will crave more food in order to get the nutrients it needs [R].  This is why some patients with Celiac disease become overweight despite being starved for nutrition.

While human studies are early on this topic, animal studies indicate that gluten-free diets may help promote the weight loss [R].

6. Gluten Free Foods Can Be More Nutritiou

Gluten-free snacks aren’t always healthy. But out of necessity, people often eat more vegetables and non-processed foods when following a gluten free diet. On a gluten free diet, you won’t be grabbing the breakroom cake or sugar-laden desserts as often.

You also may be less likely to eat these high-calorie, weight-promoting, low-nutrient foods due to the reduced availability of gluten free options:

Beer

Refined crackers

Enriched Noodles

Ramen

Cake

Cookies

Donuts

Bagels

Fried foods

7. Gluten Free Diets May Make You More Mindful

When you have to look out for gluten, you are consciously making a decision each and every time you eat, not just grabbing the nearest food. This may be a big part of why gluten-free diets promote weight loss for some people. Each and every bite requires thoughtful consideration.

8. What you crave the most may be the food that needs to go.

So many people struggle with the idea of giving up gluten because it is in their favorite snack at night and they simply can’t live without pasta and breads.

Why does this happen?

When we are sensitive to a food, the body can send out endorphins due to the reaction it causes in the body, making us want the foods even more [R].

Gluten can even make opiate-like chemicals in the body, making us want a lot!

9. Lectins in wheat can make you (and anyone) bloat.

Even if you aren’t sensitive to gluten, you may be sensitive to the lectins in the gluten-containing grains like wheat. This can cause pain, bloating, and add to the width of your waistline

Important Considerations

Not all gluten free diets are the same and not all gluten-full diets are the same.

Most people are on one side of the fence or other in terms of their beliefs surround the hotly debated topic.

A gluten-free diet is also quite drastically different than people who limit or eat “a little bit of gluten.” Full elimination may be needed to reduce inflammation.

Gluten free diets can be as full of junk food as a diet that contains gluten if you aren’t careful.

It is best to give a gluten free diet a try for at least 3 weeks to find out if it is going to help you feel better.

Gastric Band Hypnosis For Long Term Weight Loss

So what is a Virtual Gastric Band?

The Virtual Gastric Band is a non-surgical technique which uses the power of hypnosis to retrain you to be satisfied with smaller amounts of food. Your unconscious mind will think that it has had a small band placed around the top part of the stomach so that you feel fuller faster and satisfied sooner.

The program develops a healthy, natural weight control system, based on the natural biological signals of eating when hungry and stopping when satisfied, rather than forming an emotional attachment to food and eating. The program addresses emotional and psychological issues as the root of an individual’s ultimate need to begin – and continue – overeating or emotional eating.

There are predictable results (over 95% success rate in clinical trials) with ZERO risk.  No invasive surgery or potential side effects.  The virtual version deals with the issues in a person’s mind and their relationship with food.

What Are The Benefits?

You CAN Lose Weight! The program enables you to form new healthy habits that you can maintain easily and permanently, there is no deprivation, no constantly thinking about food and counting calories, you eat consciously, slowly and mindfully.  The result – steady, progressive weight loss.

Gastric band hypnotherapy can be useful for not only general health benefits through supporting weight loss in overweight and obese clients, it can also potentially reduce the risk of developing other conditions associated with obesity.

Why Diets Don’t Work

Most people who follow a “diet” will lose weight while they are still motivated to be on that diet. But, as soon as the diet stops, the weight invariably returns, often leaving them heavier than before the diet began! It is estimated that 95 percent of all people who diet experience this cycle.

Most diets include some form of deprivation and/or denial; some involve counting calories, or points, but all merely serve to program the mind to think about food. How often have you gone on a diet and obsessed about all the food you “couldn’t” or “shouldn’t have?  Now, i’m all for having a “strategy” that works and eating healthy will give you more energy and better health overall.

Denying your favorite foods could cause more problems such as “binge eating”, or obsessing about when and how you can eat your “denied foods”.

How often have you said to yourself – “OK, its Monday: “That’s it! I’m going on a diet! Just as soon as I’ve had my dinner. And then I’m going to eat only salad, and protein drinks.” Of course, the good intentions quickly lapse and it’s back to Stage One… and misery all over again!

Because most eating habits, and all habits are deeply ingrained in the unconscious, we need to get to that unconscious mind to make changes stick, for good.  Conscious self-denial can often increase the desire for that very thing, and eating a little less than we need but eating what we enjoy (within reason of course) – can actually lead to shedding the weight.

Cutting out favorite foods completely may not be a great idea… but cutting down on those foods is achievable and sustainable.

Everyone knows that eating less and exercising more will lead to a better body-shape, improved fitness and all-round health. The virtual gastric band program employs a pseudo-gastric band and other mind management techniques to help clients get the results they want and deserve. The result is steady, progressive weight loss – without depriving oneself.

What happens in a session?

During the gastric band ‘procedure’, the client is guided gently into hypnosis, where we can access their unconscious mind and increase the person’s susceptibility to positive suggestion.  Suggestions that the client wants for themselves.

The therapist then takes the client through the gastric band procedure, remember, this is an operation of the mind.  There is no pain or discomfort, just deep relaxation.

Although the client in hypnosis remain aware of what’s going on around them, when in hypnosis the unconscious mind doesn’t understand the difference between what’s real and imagined…  the unconscious mind can in fact influence the real physical responses that the client feels after the session is finished.

Everyone experiences different effects from gastric band hypnotherapy, with some people experiencing the sensation of physical tightening in their stomach, while others are unable to identify any conscious connection to the ‘surgery’, but are naturally eating less, and feeling satisfied on much smaller portions of food.

What’s Involved?

There are four one-on-one (or small group) Hypnosis sessions for you over four to six weeks which are designed to bring about permanent change in your eating habits, as well as Emotion Code Healing Sessions and as a bonus, Time Line Therapy(R) … and,  Nutrition Consultations & Education as well.  Phase 2 and 3 are for maintenance and further assistance in reaching your ideal weight,There are simple guidelines to follow to support yourself on your journey. This isn’t a short term fix. We enable you to create new habits to successfully maintain your results.

How long are the sessions?

The first hypnosis session is approximately 90 minutes and subsequent sessions are approximately 60 to 90 minutes each. You will also be given a 15 min Audio to listen to every day to reinforce new habits and help make a permanent change.  Location is no barrier, Lynn works with clients via zoom video feed as well as in person.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis

What If I Can’t Be Hypnotised?

Everyone who can follow instructions & directions can benefit from hypnosis. It is simply about following the suggestions. If you can listen and follow suggestions, you can be hypnotized. Which means you can achieve successful results with hypnosis.

How Will I Know If I Am Hypnotised?

There is no special feeling of whether or not you are hypnotized. Hypnosis is experienced as a state of being deeply relaxed. That’s all it is, deep relaxation.

Is Hypnosis Safe?

Hypnosis is perfectly safe. No one has ever been hurt using hypnosis. When you are in the relaxed state of hypnosis you are still awake and aware of everything that is occurring. You are still in control and you cannot be made to do anything you don’t want to do.

Are You In Need Of An Emotional Cleaning?

You can clear out unproductive thinking, negative self-talk and the clutter of past experiences. Just like cleaning out a closet, this kind of cleaning requires a sorting process (what to keep, what to release, what to give away).
Do THESE 5 STEPS TO START YOUR EMOTIONAL CLEANSE!

1. Sit down and center yourself, with your journal or a piece of paper. In the quietude of the moment, ask yourself, “What emotional responses do not serve me?” Don’t edit the thoughts. Don’t judge the answers. Just witness what comes in. Once you feel clear and calm, write down what came through.

2. Once the list is complete, take some time over the next few days to write how these emotions show up and what triggers them. It is important that you are clear about what buttons get pushed and how.

3. Write a list of the ways you could lead a more empowered life if you could shift these negative patterns.  AND get a blank sheet of paper… next write down everything you don’t want on one side of the page – on the other write down what you want instead.  Focus soely on what you want for yourself going forward.

4. Create a set of goals (no more than three per emotional issue) that you will begin to implement in the next six months. Include only those goals that you will commit to doing. You do not want to set yourself up for failure. Make sure, with these goals, that you create how you are going to release the unwanted behavior.

Example: I will count to 10 before I speak when I am angry; I will call my prayer partner before I act out of an emotional place; I will take time to write down how a negative emotional response will not support me, and I will choose another response.

5. Make a “win” list: Every time you respond more positively, document it. The more wins you experience and celebrate, the more wins there will be in your life!

Take a moment to say or think about this affirmation:

I am totally and fully in charge of my emotional reactions. I will clear out my negative tendencies and open myself to a life of magnificent joy!

You can also clear emotional “baggage” using the Emotion Code process,

Emotion Code & Animals – Pets Have Trapped Emotions Too!

What is the Emotion Code?

The Emotion Code is a healing modality, discovered/created by Dr. Bradley Nelson , using tools from Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture to release emotional baggage trapped within our energy field and get rid of false negative programs within our unconscious mind that prevents us from the greatest level healing.

All humans and animals have an energy body, a physical body, and an emotional body (physical, nonphysical, and metaphysical; energy, matter, and antimatter). These aspects of ourselves work together to maintain optimal health. However, it’s inevitable in the world we live in, that things happen that are out of our control. You lose your job or a close family member, maybe a friend says something mean, you lose a loved one, are rejected by a classmate or were bullied at school.  Animals also may have been abandoned, abused, fearful etc…

Many life events trigger emotions and we feel such things as abandonment, anger, jealousy, lost, anxiety, hopelessness, lack of control, etc. If we do not process these emotions properly they can become trapped within our energy body/field. Each emotion is connected to a specific organ system. See chart below.

Screen Shot 2016-04-15 at 9.14.45 AM

As more and more emotions get trapped, it creates an increasingly larger lump within the energy field of the specific organ, creating stagnation in the flow of Qi (ch-ee, life energy) that eventually leads to problems and major health issues. Who hasn’t had things happen in their lives to create emotional baggage?  We then carry that baggage with us and into our careers, & relationships which can create a lot of problems in the Now….

Trapped emotions within the body are similar to hair and debris in a clogged drain. As the debris and hair pile up, the drain slowly becomes blocked and the water is not able to flow smoothly down the drain and it will continue to get worse until you do maintenance and unclog the sink. When you have a clogged, or stuck, Qi flow in your energy body it begins to throw off the balance of your systems and because your energy and physical body work so closely together (yin and yang) once the energy body is off balance your physical body soon follows. This is where aches, pains, and small discomforts within the body comes from. Your body is simply trying to communicate to you what is wrong on an emotional/energetic level. So by removing these trapped emotions, you are essentially and metaphorically unclogging the drain and allowing water to flow smoothly so that the sink can be cleaned and function properly again.

An important thing to remember is: just like a healthy diet and frequent exercise keeps your body strong and healthy, proper and frequent maintenance of your energy and emotional body is just as crucial to your health. The Emotion code is a powerful and simple way to read and eliminate unseen baggage called trapped emotions and releasing trapped emotions often results in the sudden disappearance of physical problems, self-sabotage, and recurring relationship difficulties.

Amazing Horse Stories by Dr. Bradley Nelson

Our children were taking riding lessons at a local equestrian park and we ended up treating the owner’s horses for trapped emotions. The owner tells the story here:

I have been involved with horse training and riding since I was fourteen years old. I now own and operate an equestrian facility. I regularly compete in National Reining Horse Association events around the country with my horses.

I met Dr. Nelson and his wife, Jean a year or so ago, and have been privileged to have the two of them work on some of my horses, with amazing results, and I would like to share with you what I have seen.

All my horses are quarter horses, and are considered working cattle horses. One of my favorite horses is Newt. He is now 14 years old, and has been retired for 5 years, which is very unusual for a horse, but Newt has some problems. About 10 years ago, Newt slept on an anthill, and was bitten repeatedly by ants in a large area of skin over his left hind-quarter. Within a few days, all the hair fell out of that area, and he never really recovered from it. Although the hair grew back, I quit showing him about 6 or 7 years ago, as he just couldn’t perform any more, and it was obvious to me that he was in pain. His energy level was very low, and it seemed that he was suddenly old before his time. Over the last five years he has been totally retired, but I have been taking him out about twice a year to work him just a bit, just to give him something to do.

Over the years I have had vets look at him, chiropractors, and even tried shock therapy, but nothing worked at all. Newt is a very valuable horse. Both of his grandparents were from DocBarr twice, from both mother and father. DocBarr is a very famous quarter horse. His mother’s lineage is in the top 5 reining and cow-horses in the country.

As Dr. Nelson and Jean worked on Newt, they told me that he was suffering from trapped emotions. Specifically, he had lack of control and nervousness from around age 2. This dated back to before I had him, when he had been worked too hard and too aggressively by his former owner/trainer. They said he had some sort of disconnection going on in the left hindquarter, dating back to the ant bites as well.

Since Dr. Nelson and his wife worked on him, (he had a total of one treatment that lasted about 30 minutes) Newt is like a new horse. In fact, it’s like he has suddenly gone back to where he was when he was a four-year-old. I can now use him to rope cattle, which puts a lot of strain on the horse’s back, with no problem. I can rein him and put him through all his paces, and he performs at the top of his game. It’s amazing to me how he acts now. He is full of energy, and wants to play all the time. After being retired and unable to do much of anything at all for many years, Newt is brand-new.

Another horse of mine I call Buck. He is probably the best horse I have, and is a beautiful little buckskin quarter horse. I got him three months ago. From the very beginning, he was suffering from a severe lack of energy and trust, and had no desire to do anything. He didn’t want to work. I happen to know how he was trained, and it was way too aggressive, to put it kindly. My observation is that you can get a horse to perform with that kind of harsh training for about a year, and then you are all done, because the horse finally says, “You can hurt me all you want, and I just don’t care anymore. I’m done.”

Well, Buck had reached that point, and he was done. He hated his life, hated his job, and hated people, because they had mistreated him so much. Dr. Nelson and his wife checked him out, and found trapped emotions of hatred at age 3 (he felt that the trainer hated him), depression at age 3, and other emotions of overwhelmed, panic, and feeling taken for granted.

Since then, Buck has changed in a big way. His cadence has changed, he is much smoother to ride, and feels much more relaxed, which is how he should feel to me when I ride him. In addition, he is no longer afraid of people, and much less guarded. He is now a normal horse in all those aspects, he loves to work now, and is full of energy. It’s really amazing. He is like a new horse.

Last month, I took Buck to the NHRA show, where he took 3rd out of 30 head in the stallion class event, and 3rd in the trainer horse event. I am happy to say that he beat his old trainer’s best by five points at this show. Training by instilling fear might work for a while, but trust lasts forever.

I’m not sure how Dr. Nelson’s method works, but I am absolutely convinced that trapped emotions are real. It is truly amazing to see this process done and to see the results that are obtained. Without Dr. Nelson knowing anything about a horse’s history, the emotions and things that come up are exactly right on.

I have seen this method work, and I can see and feel the results in my horses. When I try to describe it to people they say it sounds like Voodoo. All I know is, it works, and that’s all I care about.

Shed The Weight – Your Emotional Baggage with The Emotion Code!

Most weight-loss diets focus on eliminating certain foods, reducing your food intake and measuring the width and weight of your physical form. Most of the time when you begin something new, perhaps adopting the latest diet regime touted by the so-called experts, there is the thrill of anticipated change. So you set about gathering the necessary ingredients for this promised success and the projected ‘new me’, with excitement for the challenge, coupled with the strength of your intention and a promise for the future.

And, inevitably success does come and you achieve whatever goal was set in your mind. Your physical form has shrunk accordingly and you look in the mirror admiring the new external representation of yourself. Yet, as time moves along – even as you retain the newly fashioned body and bask in the shine of success – those familiar negative feelings reveal themselves once again. It’s as if your life is on rewind, like the film ‘Ground Hog Day’. You notice these seemingly ancient feelings and respond in exactly the same way as always. In fact, it seems you have recreated situations in your life which have the same script but with new actors.

You might then ask, “Why do I still feel this way and why can’t I get over this and move on?”

So, it seems you can consciously manipulate the external (the physical body)  but this great effort doesn’t appear to move those negative thoughts you have about yourself. Powering these thoughts are the beliefs you hold about yourself, your abilities and your world. These beliefs are stored mostly at a unconscious level together with whatever are the strongest emotions within you.

We have all experienced some emotional trauma or upheaval. These events produced painful emotions and if you were not able to process these negative feelings at the time, the energy of them remained stuck in your body. The effect of holding these trapped emotions causes imbalances on the physical, mental and emotional levels. They continue to negatively interfere with the way you think, act and make decisions.

Your life, your everyday experience, is the way it is because you have created it with those beliefs and their accompanying trapped emotions. Your physical reality appears to act as a feedback mechanism to show you just what your belief systems are.

So, to make change, to clean up your act, you need to clear away the gunk weighing you down – to release your trapped emotions and change your beliefs. And then… this excess weight you carry will disappear and you will rediscover your true essence… your true self!  –written by Annette Janover, & brought to you by Lynn Thier

Anxiety Relief through Energy Healing~The Emotion Code…

Anxiety can be an overwhelming thing to tackle. Each individual affected with this illness must treat it in a personal way in order to see results. No two treatments are exactly the same. With the help of a therapist or another mental health professional, there are several ways you can begin finding anxiety help. One of these ways, not often discussed, is energy healing. Alone, or coupled with other treatment methods such as hypnosis, meditation, herbal supplements, or medical help, energy healing can help align your body and fill you with inner calm.

Signs of Anxiety

The signs of anxiety are expansive and can differ from person to person. In general, people often feel restless, antsy, and/or afraid. Thoughts race and concentrating may be difficult. People suffering from anxiety disorders may feel uneasy, panicked and may experience physical symptoms such as sweating, chest tightness, upset stomach, and dizziness. If you find that you may be suffering from anxiety, immediately contact a mental health professional. Anxiety treatment can begin and help can be found the moment you reach out. If you are interested in anxiety relief through energy healing, work with your mental health professional to find a healer near you.

How Energy Healing Can Help

Energy healing works with your chakras. By opening and aligning these points of energy, your body is restored to its natural order and positivity and peace can take root. When your chakras are misaligned, the anxious energy shooting through your body hits your chakras and meridians in a way that is not balanced. A balanced energy flow allows those feelings to flow in and out and to be addressed. An unbalanced energy flow sends those feelings of anxiety all over the place often negatively affecting the heart chakra — causing chest tightness or heavy breathing. By including energy in your anxiety treatment you can align your chakras and become more grounded. Though energy healing is not an instantaneous fix that eradicates all anxiety, it does dramatically improve your quality of life. When used over time and practiced in conjunction with other healing arts such as meditation and yoga, energy healing can be used as a highly-effective way to treat and manage anxiety — leading to a better, more rounded and balanced life.

Benefits of Energy Healing as a Form of Anxiety Treatment

Energy healing is all natural, no heavy chemicals or manufactured drugs involved. For those who wish to treat their illness in a form that is natural to the body, energy healing is an excellent choice. There are several forms of energy healing that are not limited solely to chakra healing. Energy healing can be used in conjunction with fitness, yoga, and even reiki. Energy healing is focused on helping you live in a natural, positive state through organic means.

If you are interested in energy healing as a beneficial method of anxiety treatment, please do reach out.  Sessions are approx 30 min and we release between 5 and 10 trapped negative emotions from the body in one session.

Thoughts that can Help You to be SLIM!

Retraining your brain to think and to feel differently about food is as important as what you eat when it comes to successful dieting. You can’t successfully change your diet without also changing your thinking because every habit of action is run by a habit of thought.

This means that if your habit of thought is ‘Chocolate or cookies always makes me feel better,’ then your habit of action will be putting chocolate or cookies in your mouth every time you feel sad, bored, lonely or stressed and under pressure.  Trying to give up the habit of action cannot work while you are thinking the same thoughts, but once you change the habit of thought the action changes too, then losing and maintaining the weight loss becomes much easier.

Vegetarians don’t have to fight with themselves to resist bacon or burgers as their habit of thought says, ‘I can’t and don’t eat animals’. Take a few minutes to think about how you think and describe food to yourself because harnessing the power of positive thinking will motivate you and help you stick to your diet.

For instance, when you are at the checkout looking at chocolate bars called ‘Celebration’ or ‘Divine’ remind yourself that putting large amounts of sugar into your body is neither divine nor a celebration, it’s just a form of manipulation that you can ignore by saying ‘Sugar is not a treat for my body. It’s punishment. I am choosing to treat myself and reward myself with better things.’

Here are some examples of typical negative diet thoughts that cause us to overeat and techniques for positively replacing each thought with a better one, this will help you to succeed at losing weight instead of sabotaging yourself. So, for example:

Negative thought: ‘I feel so fat in these jeans, I may as well give up the diet because I’ll NEVER be slim!’  Think instead: ‘I WILL wear these jeans and feel fantastic. I can do it!   Visualization exercise: looking in the mirror and imagining yourself looking slim and gorgeous in those jeans then keeping those feelings of confidence in your mind afterwards so that you resist junk food by focusing on the reward – looking great in your jeans.
Negative thought: ‘I can’t stick to a diet because my boyfriend has to have cookies and potato chips in the house for his lunch box and I can’t resist them.’ Think instead: ‘I keep all my boyfriends junk food/ lunch box food in a separate high cupboard that I don’t open and soon it will not exist for me. It’s always out of sight and I forget about it.’   Visualization exercise: We eat a whopping 50% more when food is right in front of us so see yourself putting his snacks in an out of reach and forgetting they exist because you don’t see them.
Negative thought: ‘We socialize so much, it’s impossible for me to diet.’ Think instead: ‘famous people socialize almost every day and if they can do it I can. Eating out makes it easier for me. I can choose lean protein, fish and salads and yummy, grilled vegetables and chicken. I don’t need to cook or shop for food and it’s easier.  Visualization exercise: See yourself making the right choices. When you get the menu, you look at the fish and chicken dishes and don’t even glance at the pasta, it empowers you and makes you proud to choose healthy food
Negative thought: ‘I will never be slim, everyone in my family is overweight.’ Think instead: ‘That is because everyone in my family makes the wrong choices. I am the one to change that.’ Visualization exercise: See your family being so impressed with what you have achieved that they want to follow your lead and lose weight just like you have.
Negative thought: ‘I have big bones.’ and my stomach gets hungry often, Think instead: ‘I have a small stomach the size of my fist and I get full very quickly. I remind myself of this every time I eat and I squeeze my fist and feel my stomach getting smaller.’    Visualization exercise: Your stomach is actually quite small, the more you squeeze your fist and remind yourself of this the quicker you feel full and the easier it is for you to eat selectively.
Negative thought: ‘It is too hard to diet when I have to take clients out to lunch all the time.’ Think instead: ‘I choose where to take my clients and I pick healthy places so it’s easy for me to stick to healthy eating.’   Visualization exercise: See yourself being so busy engaging and talking to your clients that you don’t pay much attention to the food.
Negative thought: I can’t afford diet food. My budget is too limiting for the healthy foods’ Think instead: I take my own food to work like egg and tuna fish pitas or salads, chicken and fruit.’   Visualization exercise: See how much money you are saving now you don’t buy snacks and lattes. You have more money to buy healthy, delicious food and then the inexpensive clothes you have always wanted and you look amazing in them. You are saving money, losing weight and looking great!
Negative thought: ‘I have ruined my diet eating those cookies. I am so weak, I can’t say no to my favorite foods.’ Think instead:  its ok to enjoy my favorite foods occasionally, i always have a strategy in place where i can enjoy food and still shed the weight that i want.  Visualization exercise: Visualize yourself looking amazing in your jeans or on the beach, always knowing that you have another day to eat healthy.
