Cultivating Creativity During Covid ~ With An Assist From Mulled Wine

Mulled wine originated in the 2nd century and was created by the Romans who would heat wine fortified with spices and herbs to defend their bodies against the cold winter. As the Romans conquered much of Europe throughout the next century, their love for mulled wine spread across their empire and the regions they traded with. Europeans during the Middle Ages quickly grafted onto this idea and mixed heated wine with spices, herbs and flowers as natural sweeteners to enhance the healing abilities. As our country is experiencing another wave of shut downs and sheltering in place orders, the following recipe is crafted to bring out your most creative impulse and support finding this time fruitful and full of personal expression!

Creativity In A Mug

1 bottle wine – full bodied red

4 whole cloves

3 whole star anise

1 whole cardamom pod

2 cinnamon sticks

10 whole black peppercorns

1 small spring rosemary

Nutmeg – grated

1 ½ cups blood orange juice

2 strips of blood orange zest – large, use a vegetable peeler

Optional up to ¼ of brown sugar or sweetener of choice

Place spices, herb, and orange zest in cheesecloth and secure it with kitchen twine. Combine the wine, sugar if using, blood orange juice, and cheese cloth in a slow cooker on low heat until hot, about 1 hour and remove cheese cloth. Adjust temperature to the warm setting. To serve ladle into mugs and top off with grated nutmeg and a twist of blood orange peel.

Now let’s explore the energies that make this a creative beverage!

Wine: Soulfulness. This is an expression of incredible depth, which provides softness toward human experience. It is not the quest for perfection but instead the practice of exploring what it means to be fully human within all of our shades. It is growing to love the seemingly disorderly and paradoxical aspects of a human incarnation and staying within that process, without shutting down, until the rich gift of experience has bloomed.

Star anise: opens the crown chakra and third eye.

Black pepper: supports being precise and a specialist in whatever endeavor you’re currently exploring.

Cardamom: fosters feelings of contentment regardless of outside circumstances.

Clove: deepens the creative impulse.

Nutmeg: supports abstract understanding and dreaming and visualizing what could be.

Blood orange: teaches you how to share your gifts and talents, allowing your natural charisma to shine forth.

Narrative: A fun aspect of being creative is being a bit messy and not knowing the whole picture as you start. It is great to have an objective and clear insight into what you want to bring into this world and it is equally as important to leave room for divine inspiration or your muse to lend a hand. To really allow yourself to shine do not worry about public opinion as you are in creation mode and allow your deepest self to take the reins.

Formula: Sip + ponder + slip into flow + bring your idea into the concrete + rejoice + share.

Macerated Orchid Oil ~ Anacamptis morio (L.)

East India has a rich tradition of intertwining scent, sensuality, and spirituality. The following snippet illuminates the role of scent in love play. It is taken from the classic Indian poem Ritusanhara. "Lovers lie together on their girdled, round hips covered with silken robes, or on sandalwood anointed breasts, heavy with ornaments. They seek help from fragrant flowers, set in coiffures after a bath, to intoxicate and delight their lovers."

A beautiful expression of this energy is from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, "in the embrace of his beloved, a man forgets the whole world, everything both within and without." "In the very same way, he who embraces the Self knows neither within nor without."

For a moment, close your eyes and take in the warm scented erotism, intwined with spirituality and deep connection, in your minds eye. The following blend brings this languid energy of exploring with delight your beloved into your life.

Intertwined

Blend 15 drops clary sage essential oil, 5 drops Rose otto absolute, 10 drops sandalwood (Australian) essential oil in 1oz Macerated Orchid Oil.

Clary sage is slow, seductive, warm, and desirous.

Rose otto is luxurious and bring out your deepest feelings, desires, and a radiantly open heart.

Sandalwood is rich, warm, sensuous, and elevating.

...

Macerated Orchid Oil is also the perfect base oil for creating fertility blends. The following essential oils are recommended by Australasian College of Health Sciences.

Fertility Essential Oils for Women: Cypress, savoy, angelica, geranium, sweet basil, clary sage, nutmeg, cajeput, fennel, Roman chamomile, thyme, star anise.

Fertility Essential Oils for Men: Cumin, angelica, clary sage, sweet basil, common sage.

......

The orchid has a potent energy and historically has been associated with fertility and sexuality. In ancient Greece, orchids were associated with virility. In fact, Greek women believed that if the father of their unborn child ate large, new orchid tubers, the baby would be a boy. If the mother ate small orchid tubers, she would give birth to a girl. Gaius Plinius Secundus (AD 23/24 – 79) known, as Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, a naturalist and natural philosopher, claimed that even holding the roots of an orchid would stimulate one to ecstasy.

The Latin word for orchid is orchis, which comes from the Greek orkhis, meaning testicle, because of the twin bulbs resembling testicles. The Romans believed that orchids came into being when Satyrs (a male nature spirit with ears and a tail resembling those of a horse, as well as a permanent, exaggerated erection) spilled their seed upon the earth.

Key Vibrations: Romance, sensuality, sexuality, fertility.

Energetic Gifts: Use this oil when you want more romance in your life. This can be attracting in a new love relationship, or revitalizing the relationship you are in, if it has become lackluster. This is a dynamic oil to use, to energetically prime your body to conceive (apply to both potential parents).

Reported Benefits and Uses:

This oil is a remarkably nourishing and soothing and can help improve skin's elasticity and promote cell regeneration, making this an excellent choice for mature, aging skin. It also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties and is a useful germicide, helping prevent or eliminate infections. Orchid Oil is wonderful as a hair treatment.

...

About: The inflorescence (the arrangement of the flowers on a plant) is of various colors, mainly purple but ranging from white, through pink, to deep purple. From 5 to 25 helmet-shaped flowers grow in a loose, linear bunch at the top of the single stalk. A pair of lateral sepals with prominent green, occasionally purple veins extend laterally like "wings", giving the orchid its name. White Birch ~ Betula lenta L. Essential Oil (Organic)

10 ml ~ $7.50

Key Traits: Bringing light into the darkness, deep purification, expanding your appreciation of beauty and your own inner radiance, emotional succor, protection and a profound sense of calm. An expression of the divine feminine.

Divine Archetype: Brigid; Lady of the Forest/White Goddess

Birch has been traditionally used in Native American sweat-lodge ceremonies, whose purpose is deep purification of the spirit (subtle bodies). The essential oil of birch has the same effect on the spirit as the living tree has in dreary winter landscapes, brining radiance into the darkness. This essential oil also enhances your ability to experience beauty and remain calm.

In Russian folklore, as well as in Norse and Germanic cultures, the birch itself is called Lady of the Forest. Many cultures attribute qualities of nurturing, mothering, renewal, and protection to the white birch tree. The nourishing, caring birch is an age-old symbol of the White Goddess, and the Germanic rune berkana, “birch” stands in part for protection.

...

Birch Essential Oil, while chemically and therapeutically similar to Wintergreen Essential Oil, is a specialty oil - it is much more difficult to extract than Wintergreen, as the bark must be macerated and soaked in warm water for at least 10-12 hours prior to the distillation for the most effective extraction. This therapeutically wide-spectrum stimulating and cleansing oil is highly recommended for restoring comfort to the overworked body and the agitated or anxious mind.

Reported Benefits and Uses

Birch Essential Oil is rich in Methyl salicylates and Salicylic Acid that help promote comfort and relaxation, and support the body's own ability to boost effectiveness of it's healing cycles. Birch Oil is often added to lotions, massage oils and body salves for soothing minor pain and topical inflammation. Traditionally, applied topically, Birch Sweet Oil was used as an astringent and was recognized for centuries as among the most effective of toners and tighteners of skin. Birch Oil is a purifying, uplifting and stimulating oil that encourages detoxification of the body when inhaled or applied topically.

Birch Essential Oil is a better alternative to Wintergreen, as it has nuances that create a brighter, more complex interesting aroma. Emotionally and energetically, Betula Lenta Bark Oil can help reduce stress, fatigue, depression, and melancholy feelings. This essential oil also has sedative and antispasmodic properties and may help soothe anxiety.

EXTRACTION METHOD ~ Steam Distilled Essential Oil

ORIGIN ~ Canada

Vibrational Nutrition ~ Heart Opening Blackberry Jam

I live in the Pacific North West where wild berries are abundant--recently with the help of Auggie my goose--we went berry picking and 'we' made this delightful jam!

Heart Opening Blackberry Jam

2 Cups crushed blackberries, I suggest using a glass bowl and smashing/crushing with a wooden spoon (this is a very satisfying act in its own right)

2 Cups sugar, do not skimp, as this is what causes the jam to firm up

2 Teaspoons lime juice

1 Teaspoon rose cordial or rose water

Instructions

In a small saucepan cook the blackberries, sugar, lime juice and rose cordial/water on medium high heat for 5 minutes, reduce heat to medium for 9 – 11 minutes or until mixture comes to 220° on a candy thermometer. Stir often.

Skim foam off as needed and pour into sterilized canning jars and immediately put the lid on or it will not seal properly. The mixture will thicken as it cools. Once cooled, place in freezer until ready to use. This Jam will keep up to 1 year in the freezer and about 3 weeks in the refrigerator.

Blackberries are commonly found in the wild as well as cultivated varieties, this juicy berry in general heals the compulsion to sacrifice yourself while trying to live up to the expectations of others.

The Himalayan blackberry offers strong protection against gossip and what I call “helpful meddling,” where someone says or does something that’s to your detriment and indeed causes hurt, but claims it’s to benefit you. Ever hear someone say they’re doing or saying something about you, often behind your back, “for your own good”? The fruit of the Himalayan blackberry, considered a noxious weed and an invasive species in some areas of the country, helps you see the truth in such a situation, untangle the knot of confusing energy, and right yourself.

This recipe is rounded out by rose that clears and opens the heart and brings a lofty perspective, and lime that cuts energetic cords.

Eating this jam, clears stress and heaviness from the heart, and brings a playful happy loving energy. This is perfect for any occasion that you want to gift the joyful energy of love and contentment.

Vibrational Nutrition ~ Exploring the Energy of Wild Violet Sweet Corn

Quantum physics asserts that everything has a vibrational nature. Of course, this applies to the food we consume as nutrition. And each type of food, just like each person’s handwritten signature, reveals unique energetic properties that point to its nature and “personality.” This distinct vibrational nature of the different foods we eat is its energy signature.

In my upcoming book Vibrational Nutrition: Understanding the Energetic Signature of Foods, we explore over 400 (common and not so common food signatures) and how they influence body, mind and soul.

When I was shopping at the farmers market today I found Wild Violet Sweet Corn, it is one of the varieties of corn, I explore in my upcoming book, and I just had to share!

wild violet sweet corn

Corn energy, which comes in a multitude of varieties and colors, brings fertility and supports alignment with the earth’s energies, opening you to the cornucopia that life offers and providing an earthy groundedness. A sacred plant of Native Americans, it ushers in abundance on all levels, especially the joy and pleasure associated with the feminine. Corn supports increased creativity and birthing the projects that result, and is useful for fostering friendships and associations based on mutual support and growth by promoting the synergy needed to achieve goals larger than your own. This is the general vibration for corn, although you may choose specific varieties for additional information, below we highlight Wild Violet Sweet Corn.

Cumin-Scented Grilled Corn on the Cob Recipe

Desired number of ears of corn, husks still on

½ stick salted butter

½ teaspoon ground cumin

¼ teaspoon chili powder

1 lime, juiced

Pinch of sugar

Salt and black pepper to taste

Leaving the husks attached, remove the silk and rinse the corn. Gently put the husks back in place, then soak the corn cobs in water for at least 30 minutes (the corn needs to be completely covered in water). Bring the butter to room temperature and whip in the cumin, chili powder, lime juice, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Remove the corn from the water and carefully peel down the husks, making sure you keep them intact, and spread the butter evenly on the corn. Put the husks back in place (they might be a little loose, but that is okay) and grill the corn, turning frequently, until the husks are charred and beginning to shrivel and the corn is tender, about 10 minutes.

This is such a forgiving recipe and not persnickety at all! Whatever temperature you’re already grilling at will work. This next part is completely optional, but my favorite way to finish off this style of corn is to very carefully (so you don’t burn your fingers) peel back the husk, and place the ears directly on the grill, and depending on how hot your grill is, grill for 1 to 3 minutes, turning the corn halfway through the grilling. Basically you’re looking for a nice char.

Narrative: Wild Violet Sweet Corn is a stunning bicolored corn with about 60 percent purple and 40 percent white kernels per cob, wild violet sweet corn helps to activate your third eye and development of subtle perception. Brings penetrating insight and broadens your outlook. Also helps you anchor this knowing into your body to help guide you. It is excellent to eat before journeying, prayer, or meditation.

Australian Sandalwood ~ Santalum spicatum

For radiant skin, take 2 oz of sesame seed oil in a dark bottle and add 25 drops of Australian sandalwood oil, 3 drops of rose essential oil, and 7 drops of lemon essential oil. Cap and shake well. Apply while still wet out of the shower or tub and let allow yourself to air dry. Your skin will joyful 'drink' up this deeply moisturizing formula. You may also apply to your solar plexus and heart to help abolish heavy dark emotions and allow the 'sunshine' back in.

Purchase here ~ 10 ml . $56.00

Key Vibrations: Serenity, stability, lightness of being

Energetic Gifts:

This essential oil is sattvic nature, meaning it promotes the qualities of “intelligence, virtue, and goodness, and creates harmony, balance, and stability. It is light, (not heavy) and luminous in nature. It processes an inward and upward motion and brings about the awakening of the soul. Sattva provides happiness and contentment of a lasting nature. It is the principle of clarity, wideness and peace, the force of love that unites all things together.” - Dr. David Frawley

Brings serenity and calmness, reduces nervous energy, helps to stabilize emotional mood swings and extreme emotional reactions. Addresses the energetic root of insomnia and releases emotional tensions stored in the stomach and heart area.

Physical Gifts:

* Antibacterial. Helps to reducing acne-causing bacteria in the skin such as Staphylococcus aureus.

* Anti-inflammatory effects: Although bisabolol is present at a lower percentage in Australian sandalwood oil, it confers a significant anti-inflammatory property on the oil.

* Skin care: An excellent emollient for dry, aging skin. It can also promote the regeneration of keratinocytes, leading to reduction in scar formation and in the repair of skin damage.

* Eases muscle spasms, helps with minor pain and inflammation, anti -fungal and viral. Good topical application for bug bites.

Of Interest:

At a time when Indian Sandalwood Oil (Santalum alba) is becoming increasingly rare, Australian Sandalwood Oil is a more ecologically sound choice with its very similar therapeutic properties and aroma. Ours is an exceptional and very therapeutic Australian Sandalwood Essential Oil, with a natural alpha-santalol content of over 25% and a deep, complex character.

Santolols are terpenols that are unique to the genus Santalum. These molecules are known to stimulate the pineal gland and release endorphins, giving a sense of well-being. The woody, pleasant fragrance of sandalwood oil is due to β-santolol while α-santolol has therapeutic and healing properties.

Sandalwood trees are known as ‘root hemi-parasites’, which means they require another tree or ‘host tree’ to grow. Host trees provide extra water and nutrients to the sandalwood, delivered by unique root connections. The two trees form a symbiotic relationship and live together throughout the life of the sandalwood tree. The best host species are nitrogen fixing plants (plants that convert nitrogen from the air into fertilizer for their growth), especially wattles (Acacia trees) that grow in Western Australia.

....

It’s fragrance is heady, warm and creamy, with rich wood notes, and decidedly exotic.

EXTRACTION METHOD ~  Steam Distilled Essential Oil from Heart Wood
