Elderflower Absolute - Sambucus nigra ssp. Caerulea
The proper and respectful way to approach the spirit of this tree, is to understand she is the physical embodiment of a wise ancient one, holding the energy and memory of the first rooted beings, an oracle, a source of strength and guidance in times of trouble or need.
An oracle classically defined, is a person or thing that provides wise and insightful counsel or prophetic predictions, including foreknowledge of the future, inspired by deities. If done through ritual means, it is a form of divination. Elderflowers have a strong connection to the Fairy.
I was a professional reader for many years and most often people would come and ask for a concrete prediction, as if, the world around them wasn’t mutable and in constant flux; not only from their actions but all other actions, including human and nonhuman.
Even if you start from a clear vantage point at any time there can be a swift change of fortune, because you cannot control outside factors, just react and adjust as needed. This is one of Elderflowers special gifts. When life is confusing, this flower helps you look again and see from a different point of view, often confusion arises because the wrong questions are being asked, one is operating on incorrect assumptions, or another is being deceptive consciously or unconsciously. There will always be varied results if your focus is on controlling environment or another. Where wisdom in action can always be applied is self.
This is a direct link to asking the oracle for help but not to control an outside force but to understand an internal one. The goal here is not predictably nor domination, in fact quite the opposite, the less predictable the individual becomes, rigidity is reduced and spontaneity and creativity are increased. I understand this may sound in conflict of popular ideas, however the emphasis upon the person rather than a specific event, switches the energy from ‘something happening to you’, to ‘you happening to an event’. What skills and knowing do you want to bring to bear?
This way of working with an oracle, emphasizes your potential for creativity and self-actualization and is deemed as more important than your limitations, idiosyncrasies, and difficulties with social situations, emphasizing your native and learned endowments.
Your potentialities of feeling, thoughts, actions, growth, evolution--the range and variety of experiences and how you interact with various environing conditions--the multiplicity and diversity of experiences available to you. This is inner, subjective freedom. It is the enlightenment of being responsible for the self, one chooses to be. It is the recognition you are emerging process, not a static end product.
I want to emphasis this understanding of freedom, is not a removal from cause and effect but a complement. Freedom rightly understood is a fulfillment of action laid in place, to order the sequence of your life, that will lead to clear results. This type of seeing is the long game but is the most reliable way to craft a future you desire. A path laid by clear sight and build with right action, with wiggle room for divine inspiration and serendipity.
Of course, we are not always in a rational frame of mind and have the energetic ability to manage our inner-self. She will come and shelter when you are need of protection and a soft place to rest, in the past people were cautioned not to sleep under an elder tree for fear you would transport out of time and place to Fairy. Some times that is what is needed – to be suspended out of time and place – held safe and fast in love and protection, until you are strong enough to re-address your problem and have the clarity and energy to work on it.

Cyclamen Absolute - Cyclamen europaeum
The origin of the word cyclamen is the Greek word kyklos, meaning a circle and her petals open as elegant brightly colored butterfly wings, floating in tandem, circling the stem. The Chinese artist Zhang Daqian a painter from the 20th century would make fantastical translations of a flower’s scientific name into a Chinese name based on pronunciation. The cyclamen’s Chinese name is Xiankelai, which means ‘the guest comes from the fairyland,’ and indeed the energy of this absolute is ethereal.

Cyclamen gifts the ability to frame things and ideas in new contexts. It is powerfully freeing to see things outside calcified notions. In fact, transformative. Her second gift in this sequence is the ability to crystalize this information and anchor it in the material realm to grow.
One of the oddest aspects of being human is how we absorb information. Psychotherapist Barbra Shore address this in her fascinating essay ‘An Absurdist Pantomime’, she examines the way in which our thought processes shape the data that constitutes our perceived reality, including ourself and our surroundings:
“We have to make room for the possibility that our thought processes do not neutrally report on what is ‘out there’ in an ‘objective’ world. But rather, like the suppositions of theoretical physicist David Bohm, that our thought processes actively participate in forming our perceptions, our sense of meaning, our daily actions. Bohm suggests that ‘collective thought and knowledge have become so automated that we’re in large part controlled by them, with subsequent loss of authenticity, freedom and order.” Seen through this hypothesis, thought is not a fresh, direct perception but rather is the past—that which has already been thought—carried forward through memory into the present." 1
Our growth as a whole requires an interplay between habit and creativity. Without the ability to perceive in a new way, outside of calcified projections—creativity—no new habits would come into being; your nature would follow repetitive patterns and behave as if you were governed by non-evolutionary principles. Stagnation. On the flip side, without the stabilizing force of habit formation, your new ideas and perceptions could never take root and bare fruit, leading to a turbulent unproductive life.
This speaks to not only the mysteries of physical metamorphoses but also the loveliest transmutations of the soul. This plant helps you know when it is time to anchor and when it is time to seek change in perception or physical circumstances.
At the most basic level—cyclamen helps you perceive where you are in your evolutionary cycle—aware or not, you are always at a certain stage in your life activates. There is always a beginning and to have a beginning you must have something truly new something that has not existed in your continuum before.
For many a fresh, direct perception, is what we call an epiphany. A sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something. It is an intuitive grasp of reality through something, such as an event, often simple and striking. The second turn of the wheel is the incubation stage, here lovingly grow your new idea or life circumstance. This is followed by taking your fully formed concept and taking action to birth it into the world, this is where stabilization through habit formation comes into play.
One of the most amazing aspects of this process, is what you leave in your wake. Even though you are ready to move on to the next project, idea, circumstance, what you leave behind might be the ah-ha moment for someone else. In this way we as all of humanity link arms in our evolutionary cycle.

Labdanum Absolute ~ Cistus ladaniferus

Although labdanum, is harvested from the long stems of the cistus shrub, a scented gum resin. Cistus is a sun-loving plant that thrives in arid conditions, this special relationship with the sun, provides the circumstances that produces labdanum. To use labdanum, is to awaken to and understand, your inner essences of the sun.

Sun —light—spirt and matter, the transparency of consciousness and the crystallization of light as form.
The Vedas teach us, that we each have a personal sun, that resides in our navel, it is called manipura or the abode of glittering gems and from here personal awareness arises. From this energy center we start to look at the unified whole as parts and pieces and give each a name and assign a value. From here we gain a sense of self, I-consciousness, and explore the world through a very personal lens: I like this, I do not like this, a very subjective view of environment and people.
Ayurveda teaches inner-fire rules physical sight. HH The 14th Dalai Lama likened spirit to the Sun and soul to the Moon. The sun is an animating force, that coaxes dormant yin forces into being. It purifies and desires to transcend.
Most traditions teach that the sun is an archetypal masculine energy and as all things in duality has two sides and is often depicted with the ability to protect or destroy. It can be a consuming, devouring force that can be unstable and destructive. In the tale of King Midas, we are reminded all the glitters is not gold, and not to allow ourselves to be consumed by worldly ambitions to the point our inner-lives are destroyed. The familiar Greek myth of Icarus and Phaethon is instructive: to fly too near the sun is to be consumed in one’s own hubris. The Vedas teach the solar plexus chakra (our inner-sun) is where personal ego is housed, if one is not vigilant, it is easy to be scorched by this energy.
This energy center teaches the earthly lessons of:
A balanced inner-sun
. Personal power, the intellect, opinion, logic, will, direction, joy, leadership, action, authority, integrity, radiance, courage, self-worth, consciousness, refinement, that consumes to renew.
A distorted inner-sun
. Anger, pettiness, rage, hatred, ego issues (inflated or deflated), abuse of power (i.e., domination, misguided force, using fear to control), feeling superior, ‘my way is the only way’, perfectionism, rigidity, violence, feeling weak, having no expression of personal choice.
It can also be understood as a catalyst for change, growth, evolution and increase. Attachment rises from here – what do you want to graft onto? Caretake? Foster into fruition? We only caretake and foster where our attention flows. From here also arises the ability to be in a committed long-term relationships.
The quintessential protector for those who cannot help themselves. As the heavenly warrior, the sun blazing light turns back the darkness of primeval chaos, as the hunter, his arrow like rays unerringly hit the target. The majestic solar vitality embodied in ram, dragon, lion, eagle and phoenix. The omniscient all-seeing eye, the exacting guardian of universal order.
J. R. R. Tolkien’s character Gandalf the White, “his hair was white as snow in the sunshine; and gleaming white was his robe; the eyes under his deep brows were bright, piercing as the rays of the sun”; 1 radiated out the protective light of the sun, pushing back the threats that loomed in the darkness, to keep the travelers under his protection safe, until the true dawn came.
Eastern philosophy teaches, this is the energy center, that produces what we call the mind and intellect, how we process and synthesis. The alchemists taught the sun is the act of becoming conscious. Generally speaking, we can only know that which already exists within our realm of awareness, and we must use this small opening of awareness to scan the vast ocean of knowledge and information to begin the process of becoming more aware. I believe most creation stories are metaphors for this very process of becoming awake or aware—that is enlightened.
The ability to form the rich information from the fertile darkness, break it into usable bits and synthesize, until it is a fully formed concept that moves civilization forward. You see this in all great discoveries that require structure and repeatable process. Art, music, literature, philosophy, spirituality, are all to a degree lunar in the fact they are not subject to hard fast rules. Whereas engineering, architecture, biology, chemistry, aeronautics, surgery, dentistry, etcetera, all benefit from a structured body of information. The sun gives rise to being analytical, organized, and methodical.
