The Book Table Presents: Chris Ware in Conversation with Chip Kidd! Their main focus will be talking about Ware’s latest book, RUSTY BROWN.
RUSTY BROWN (Pantheon, 2019) is a fully interactive, full-color articulation of the time-space interrelationships of three complete consciousnesses in the first half of a single midwestern American day and the tiny piece of human grit about which they involuntarily orbit. A sprawling, special snowflake accumulation of the biggest themes and the smallest moments of life, Rusty Brown literately and literally aims at nothing less than the coalescence of one half of all of existence into a single museum-quality picture story, expertly arranged to present the most convincingly ineffable and empathetic illusion of experience for both life-curious readers and traditional fans of standard reality. From childhood to old age, no frozen plotline is left unthawed in the entangled stories of a child who awakens without superpowers, a teen who matures into a paternal despot, a father who stores his emotional regrets on the surface of Mars and a late-middle-aged woman who seeks the love of only one other person on planet Earth.

CHRIS WARE is widely acknowledged to be the most gifted and beloved cartoonist of his generation by both his mother and fourteen-year-old daughter. His Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth won the Guardian First Book Award and was listed as one of the 100 Best Books of the Decade by The Times (London) in 2009. Building Stories was named a Top Ten Fiction Book of the Year in 2012 by both The New York Times and Time magazine. Ware is an irregular contributor to The New Yorker, and his original drawings have been exhibited at the Whitney Biennial, in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and in piles behind his worktable in Oak Park, Illinois. In 2016 he was featured in the PBS documentary series Art 21: Art in the 21st Century, and in 2017 an eponymous monograph of his work was published by Rizzoli.

SYFY WIRE – #BATMAN Original Art on Display at NYC Society of Illustrators

If you are a serious Batman fan, then you must find a way to visit The Society of Illustrators in New York in the next few months to witness its “Illustrating Batman: Eighty Years of Comics and Pop Culture” exhibit. Open now and running through October 12, the exhibition encapsulates Batman’s timelessness in a series of covers and splash pages by over 50 accomplished artists, including Frank Miller, Neal Adams,Alex Ross, Shawn Martinbrogh, Bruce Timm, and Jim Lee. You can also find original ads, toys, and promotional items from the Silver Age donated by long-time collectors tucked in alongside the historic artwork.

The second floor MoCCA Gallery is titled “Bat Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan,” featuring manga artist Jiro Kuwata. Batman became huge in Japan in the 1960s when dubbed versions of the Adam West and Burt Ward show aired — Kuwata’s Kaju fighting Batman Manga flew off the shelves. The other two parts of the exhibit, “Batman Collected: Chip Kidd’s Batman Obsession” and “Batman Black and White: Sketch Covers Selected by Chip Kidd” are from his personal collection.

Oh yeah, here’s a LINK to the SYFY WIRE website. This is where you can read a really great interview with Chip Kidd where he describes his love of Batman & also talks about some his Original Comic Book Art Collection.

Designer Chip Kidd’s Die-Cut Comic Book Cover for JJ Abrams’ Spider-Man #1 #Marvel

Marvel Comics has announced a new die-cut cover to launch JJ Abrams’, Henry Abrams‘ and Sara Pichelli‘s new launch title Spider-Man #1. Designed by Chip Kidd, Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man #1 Variant by Chip Kidd will now be a die-cut cover, at no additional cost to retailers.
The front cover is red, the centre of Spider-Man’s eye cut out to show the spider below, which opens to show the spider and credits.
Marvel says that Chip Kidd’s intention was to produce something that looked handmade — the way Peter made his first costume.
All orders from comic book stores have to be made by 10am ET… so if you want one, do tell your comic book store. The FOC for all other covers on the title remains August 26th, but this one will need a little more time. The Diamond code is JUL190834.

Over the last two years, the Snoopy Museum has welcomed visitors from all over Japan and across the world.
