Book Event Video – EXERCISE OF POWER by Former Secretary of Defense, Robert M. Gates

In his newest book, Exercise of Power: American Failures, Successes, and a New Path Forward in the Post-Cold War World (Knopf), former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates provides a candid, sweeping examination of power in all its manifestations, and how it has been exercised, effectively or poorly, by American presidents in the post-Cold War world.

Since the end of the Cold War, the global perception of the United States has progressively morphed from dominant international leader to disorganized entity, seemingly unwilling to accept the mantle of leadership or unable to govern itself effectively. Secretary Robert Gates argues that this transformation is the result of the failure of political leaders to understand the complexity of American power, its expansiveness, and its limitations. He makes clear that the successful exercise of power is not limited to the use of military might or the ability to coerce or demand submission, but must encompass as well diplomacy, economics, strategic communications, development assistance, intelligence, technology, ideology, and cyber.

By analyzing specific challenges faced by the American government in the post-Cold War period — Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, Syria, Libya, Russia, China, and others — Secretary Gates analyzes in depth the ways in which leaders have used the instruments of power available to them. With forthright judgments of the performance of past presidents and their senior-most advisers, firsthand knowledge, and insider stories, Secretary Gates argues that U.S. national security in the future will require learning, and abiding by, the lessons of the past, and re-creating those capabilities that the misuse of power has cost the nation.

Please look down below, here’s a video interview of Former US Secretary of Defense, Robert M. Gates, talking about his new book… EXERCISE OF POWER!

R. I. P. Milton Glaser – Graphic Designer & Creator of the “I Heart NY” Logo

dvdvdvv

“Milton Glaser has left the Earth. But his art, his passion, his inspiration, his friendship, his legacy: They are all still here. They’ll always be here, with us. Thank you, Milton.” – Chip Kidd

Milton Glaser was an American graphic designer. His designs include the I ❤ NY logo, the psychedelic Bob Dylan poster, and the logos for DC Comics, Stony Brook University, and Brooklyn Brewery. He was also a founder of NEW YORK Magazine and ran a personal studio/ ad agency called “Push Pin Studios”.

Sadly, Milton Glaser passed away on June 26th, 2020. He was 91 years old. He had a stroke in his own bed at home in Manhattan, NY.

Rest In Peace, Milton.

Around the time of the 9/11 event that hit New York City so hard Milton’s “I Heart NY” Logo was revamped to speak about it. This Poster (down below) became extremely popular around NYC. They added the phrase, “…More Than Ever”. Later, in 2020, during the Covid-19 Outbreak, this Poster can be seen in many New York Hospitals & has became totally iconic all over again.

It’s hard to believe but this famous logo started from this original sketch (from 1976) and look at what it became!

One last thing, here’s an incredible poster he designed that became a premium-type item you could have found inside Bob Dylan’s “Greatest Hits” Album of 1966.

Author Cheryl Strayed’s Interview on the DESIGN MATTERS Podcast With Debbie Millman

In a recent DESIGN MATTERS Podcast interview, Host Debbie Millman talks with Author Cheryl Strayed. You can check that out by clicking HERE!

You could say that Cheryl Strayed is very adaptable. Her memoir,  Wild , was adapted into a movie starring Reece Witherspoon. Another book, Tiny Beautiful Things , was adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos and Thomas Kale.  Tiny Beautiful Things  itself was adapted from an advice column she once wrote called “Dear Sugar”, and that advice column has been adapted into a New York Times podcast called  Sugar Calling .

Debbie talks to Cheryl about her childhood, her career, and about the value of taking a very long hike. “What happens on the outside, one foot in front of the other, also happens on the inside. The way to heal anything is to keep going.”

Amid a global pandemic comes a novel about a global pandemic. Lawrence Wright wrote “The End of October” before the new coronavirus was discovered in China, but some of its chapters feel ripped from today’s headlines. In the video down below, Wright joins Jeffrey Brown to discuss returning to fiction after years in journalism and what inspired his prescient story.

Little Side Note: This book was published by Knopf (In Stores Now!), & Chip Kidd designed the Cover!

“The action begins at an internment camp in Indonesia, where Dr. Henry Parsons has been sent by WHO to investigate a deadly outbreak of acute hemorrhagic fever. The situation quickly escalates when an infected man joins the Hajj to Mecca, and Parsons, working with a Saudi Prince and Doctor, has to find a way to quarantine millions of pilgrims even as he struggles to determine whether the disease is an act of bio-warfare, as the deputy director of homeland security claims.”
