MAUS Graphic Novel – What the Book-Banning Trend Could Mean for American Democracy
A wave of book-banning is washing over America, and Art Spiegelman is its latest target. His acclaimed graphic novel about the Holocaust, “Maus,” was recently banned by a Tennessee school board. The reason cited by the board is content that includes nudity, profanity and violence — this in reference to a book about a concentration camp. Spiegelman wrote the book about his parents, both Auschwitz survivors. In these two recent interviews he tells what the book-banning trend could mean for American democracy, antisemitism, racism and extremism.

OUR COLORS is a mesmerizing coming-of-age and coming-out graphic novel by the genius writer-artist of the breakout hit MY BROTHER’S HUSBAND!
Set in contemporary suburban Japan, OUR COLORS is the story of Sora Itoda, a sixteen-year-old aspiring painter who experiences his world in synesthetic hues of blues and reds and is governed by the emotional turbulence of being a teenager. He wants to live honestly as a young gay man in high school, but that is still not acceptable in Japanese society. His best friend and childhood confidante is Nao, a young woman whom everyone thinks is (or should be) his girlfriend, and it would be the easiest thing to play along—she knows he’s gay but knows, too, how difficult it is to live one’s truth in his situation.
Sora’s world changes forever when he meets Mr. Amamiya, a middle-aged gentleman who is the owner and proprietor of a local coffee shop and is completely, unapologetically out as a gay man. A mentorship and platonic friendship ensues as Sora comes out to him and agrees to paint a mural in the shop, and Mr. Amamiya counsels Sora about how to deal with who he is. But it won’t be easy. Mr. Amamiya paid a high price for his freedom of identity, and when a figure from his past suddenly appears, the situation becomes a vivid example of just how complicated life can be.

New Hardcover Book Coming Out From Knopf – A HUNDRED LOVERS: POEMS By RICHIE HOFMANN
ABOUT “A HUNDRED LOVERS, POEMS”:
This is a new book by Richie Hofmann that will be coming out on February 8th, 2022. It’s an erotic journal in poems, from a rising star in the American poetry scene, author of the highly acclaimed debut collection “Second Empire”.
“A Hundred Lovers” is a catalog of encounters, sublime, steamy, and frank. Inspired by French autofiction, the poems feel both sharp and diaristic; their lyrical, intimate world brings us everyday scenes imbued with sex. “Eros enters, where shame had lived,” the speaker observes, as the poems explore risk and appetite, promiscuity and violence, and, in the wake of his marriage, questions about monogamy and desire.
Bringing us both the carefully knotted silk ties of the wedding pair and their undress in a series of Hockney-like interiors where passion colors every object, Hofmann speaks plainly of the saliva, tears, and guts of the carnal, just as he does of the sublime in works of art. “A Hundred Lovers” invites us to consider our own memories of pleasure and pain, which fill the generous white space the poet leaves open to us between his ravishing lines.
