ORIGINAL SISTERS: PORTRAITS OF TENACITY AND COURAGE By ANITA KUNZ, a New Addition to the Pantheon Graphic Library
ORIGINAL SISTERS: PORTRAITS OF TENACITY AND COURAGE By ANITA KUNZ
Foreword by Roxane Gay
From the internationally acclaimed artist, a stunning collection of portraits of ground-breaking women—Joan of Arc, Josephine Baker, Greta Thunberg, Misty Copeland, and many more history-making women whose names have been forgotten and are finally being brought to light. With a Forward by Roxanne Gay
“This book, as a whole, offers the reader possibility and promise … You will be introduced to many of these women for the first time, because history is rarely kind to women until it is forced to be. You will learn about artists and activists, rulers and rebels.” —Roxanne Gay, from the Forward
Original Sisters was born from the COVID-19 quarantine. In early March 2020, locked down in her home-studio in Toronto and longing for inspiration, artist Anita Kunz started researching women on the Internet. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for, but she soon found an array of astonishing people who had done amazing things—some of whom she had heard of, but most of whom she had not. And then she began to paint their pictures and write down their stories. The result is a jaw-dropping feat of historic and artistic research. The wide variety of lives, occupations, time periods, and achievements is absolutely mind-bending.
From Joan of Arc to Josephine Baker, from Hippolyta to Greta Thunberg, from Anne Frank to Misty Copeland: these women made and changed history. But there are just as many whom you’ve never heard of, who were never recognized in their lifetimes, whose achievements need to be brought to light. They include the anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl, who was executed at age twenty-one by the Third Reich, and Alice Ball, a young African American scientist who discovered a treatment for leprosy but died tragically before she could receive credit for it.
This is not only a breathtaking art book. Original Sisters also recounts a secret history that must be told so that it is a secret no more.

VIDEO ~ CHASE JARVIS LIVE SHOW: Graphic Designer Debbie Millman Talks About Her New Book, “WHY DESIGN MATTERS”
In a recent episode of the CHASE JARVIS LIVE Podcast, Debbie Millman talks with Chase about her life, career & her new book, “WHY DESIGN MATTERS: CONVERSATIONS WITH THE WORLD’S MOST CREATIVE PEOPLE”.
At a certain point in our careers, there are no more promotions to seek. No more pay raises to demand. No more competition to be had…. At the peak of our careers, a sense of achievement can be offset by the sheer terror of falling down to the bottom again. For over thirty years, Debbie Millman established herself as a creative leader, on her own terms. Designer. Educator. Artist. Brand Consultant. Podcast Host. But unlike many others, Debbie did not just invent a brand. She focused on building character, creating a great reputation, and ultimately mastering her craft. The iconic host of one of the world’s longest-running podcasts, Design Matters, joins me in this episode to share the ups and downs of her incredible journey, the lessons learned, roles played, and her plans for the future.
Highlights of the conversation:
* Finding out what you truly love to do
* How speaking publicly about childhood trauma on Tim Ferriss’ podcast shifted her healing process forward
* Why we become more intentional about our time as we grow older
* Debbie shares one of the most profound pieces of advice from an interview guest she’s ever talked to, David Lee Roth (When you’re on the top, there’s only one way to go).
* Debbie shares why how her success came as a result of self-loathing and over-achieving as a young person * Why is it more important to evolve as a person than as a brand? What’s the difference?
If you don’t know yet, Debbie is also the author of six books, including two collections of interviews that have extended the ethos and editorial vision of Design Matters to the printed page: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. She has an upcoming book based majorly on her podcast Design Matters, called Why Design Matters.

For most of his life, Anderson Cooper intentionally distanced himself from the Vanderbilt dynasty his mother was born into. But after Gloria Vanderbilt’s death in 2019, Cooper, CNN anchor and New York Times bestselling author, began going through old journals, letters and Vanderbilt family documents his mother had stored away in long-forgotten boxes. Intrigued, he began researching the public and private lives of his ancestors, and when his son Wyatt was born in 2020, decided to write a book to one day help him understand this fascinating branch of his family’s history. The story of the Vanderbilts is an American epic of achievement and excess—a saga of a staggering fortune built and squandered, of high society and salacious scandals, of public fame and private pain.
As both award-winning journalist and great, great, great grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who rose from obscurity and died the richest man in America in 1877, Anderson Cooper is uniquely qualified to tell this extraordinary family history. VANDERBILT: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty, written with novelist and historian Katherine Howe, chronicles the lives of some of the most remarkable members of this famous and fractured family who re-defined conspicuous consumption.
