another cover link
A Russian fan downlist supplied this cover scan link:
http://lib.aldebaran.ru/books/budzhol...
It looks vaguely like the Caza French cover we were talking about a bit ago, except done in a more realistic style. The rest of the Russian covers are quite interesting, too, ranging from recognizable scenes and characters from the books through to recycled stock art. If anyone has more cover art links, feel free to post them in the comments.

new Bujold interview at Baen podcast
A few weeks ago, I recorded a long phone interview with Baen editor Tony Daniel, in support of their very nice trade paperback reprint of Memory, out this month. The first half is now up here:
http://www.baen.com/podcast/podcast.asp
My part starts at about 5:30 minutes in.
The second half is supposed to go up next Friday.
The colorful visual aid:

"Dreamweaver's Dilemma" (and Proto Zoa)
My chat list over at dendarii.com this week is discussing my first professional short story (novelette, technically), which is taking me back, rather. I wrote it in the late fall of 1982, fired with the spirit of emulation from watching my old friend Lillian Stewart Carl start her own writing career, out of the middle of a household also filled with young kids.
It is actually the start of the proto-Vorkosiverse, creating Beta Colony but before Barrayar was even thought of (or, in-universe, rediscovered.) I sometimes forget that the whole fictional universe did not actually start with Cordelia rolling over in the mud and finding Aral's boots in front of her nose; it was just the Barrayar parts that grew from him and unfolded outward.
I dubbed it "a short story written for practice" in later interviews -- if it had sold at the time, it wouldn't have been practice. I did learn a lot from writing it, as one does with early work. The mode is SFnal murder mystery; the setting is Earth.
It first hit print with the eponymous Boskone GoH souvenir book by NESFA Press in 1996. Later, I also recycled it (and the rest of my meager early short tales) into one of my first e-book experiments, Proto Zoa.
The latter, e-only, may be found here, also in the iPad and Nook stores:
http://www.amazon.com/Proto-Zoa-Lois-...
If you prefer paper, most of the contents (plus added value) are duplicated in the NESFA volume, reprinted (4 times now!) as a nice trade paperback. Contents here:

good covers
With all this talk of dire covers, herewith a couple of older ones that I thought were much better, certainly as far as representing the books inside goes. The artwork is not as polished as some, alas, but the composition is good and content is remarkably faithful in the details. (Spot the accurate details! There are several!) These were the 1996 editions of Shards of Honor and Barrayar in Polish.

Ran across this post this morning...

Bradbury's career survived, I might note. A heartening thought.

Bujold interview included (at no extra charge)
Sarah Wendell, one of the bloggers at the romance review website Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Books http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/ , has one of her books about the romance genre on sale in the Kindle store at present -- I'm not sure for how much longer.
http://www.amazon.com/Everything-abou...
Tone and style is much like the blog. It has a number of short interviews with authors about aspects of writing romance, including one from me. Lots of fun.

2014 Hugo results
...are here:
http://www.thehugoawards.org/2014/08/...
The complete voting breakdown, interesting if you are in an entrails-of-the-sacrifice mood, are here:
http://loncon3.org/hugos/2014%20Hugo%...
It took me years to figure out how their Australian Ballot system works. On the whole, I think it works pretty well, in an "at least better than the alternatives" way. 60 or so years of evolution will do that.
