periodic reading-order repost

For the new audience since the last time...

https://www.goodreads.com/story/show/...

What it says: my own reading order recs.

Judging from recent readers reviews I've seen surface, somewhere out there is a reading order that starts with Falling Free, in strict chronology. This may be the fault of the online booksellers' robotic insistence that we number the series books in their catalogs, which we duly did when we put them up. And I can't say starting there is wrong, but it's certainly not the only route into the series. What will be the "best" route will depend on the individual reader and is therefore unpredictable, at least by me.

Feel free to pass this link along.

xkcd 5-4-15

Oh, xkcd is so very fine in the snark values today.

I especially appreciate the mouseover.

Apropos to the new book, too -- I shall have to relink it later.

handy free SHARDS sample

I was lately reminded, Baen still has a large sample of Shards of Honor up on their website, for people who want to dip into the beginning of the Vorkosigan series at no risk.

http://www.baen.com/chapters/W200307/...

(Large as in rather more than half the book, although less than half the omnibus volume that also includes Barrayar.)

The Kindle store also includes a reasonably generous sample in their "Look Inside" feature. Which is a feature I really like, when I remember to access it -- it has several times either sold me on a title, or kept me from making a purchasing mistake.

Amazon's insistence that we number the series books, something I'd heretofore resisted, resulted in Shards of Honor being listed as Book 2 after Falling Free. But it is actually the book that those who wish to begin at the beginning should start with, something I also tried to indicate on the little e-book "cover".

While I think the above is enough for going on with -- why waste time with discussions about a book when one could be reading the actual book -- there's still this for those who really want to know more:

note from the past

I ran across this little amusement I did in promotion for CryoBurn, back when it came out... there may be a new audience by now that hasn't seen it.

Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Bookstore here in Minneapolis, I may note in passing, is your source for signed Bujold books. They do mail order to all seven continents.

also coming in 2015

Aha. I saw an early draft of this last year... glad to find it's seeing the light of day.

Academic Bujold study.

The academic study of fantasy and science fiction is a strange world all its own, but interesting to visit. Wouldn't want to live there, but I'm happy to come up on the porch and chat now and then.

new book

I am pleased to report that a new Cordelia Vorkosigan novel has been sold to Baen Books for publication, tentatively, in February of 2016.

The title is Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen.

It is not a war story. It is about grownups.

And that is probably all I ought to say right now in a venue read by the spoiler-sensitive. It is, after all, a long haul till next February.

2016 will also mark the 30th anniversary of my first publication by Baen, which ought to be good for a little PR fun.

Sir Pterry

I was saddened to hear of Terry Pratchett's death yesterday, though relieved that he got to pass at home, where he'd plainly wanted to be. I did get to meet him a few times on the convention circuit, where he was always instructive to watch. But mostly I met him through his books, which occupy two shelves on my keeper-bookcase.

Best obit I've seen so far was from xkcd, which really sums up not only what the best F&SF, but the best books generally, do for us:

Although I also especially appreciated this short but so-cogent reader response:

today's xkcd

Today's xkcd, "Flowcharts", made me think of Ivan, and grin.

http://www.xkcd.com/

That would be the adult Ivan, of course. The younger Ivan's thinking was more like a ball of yarn after the kitten had got to it.

an advantage to writers

A friend sent this link:

http://mic.com/articles/98348/science...

Heh. Finally, an advantage to all this nonsense.

Tho' I do wonder a bit at cause-and-effect flow vs. mere guilt-by-association. Being more ill would, it seems to me, impede writing, ergo non-writers would be seen as not doing as well. One presumes the formal studies assigned the tasks rather than having them be self-generated.
