Ivan's flow chart would involve more curves.
I've rather enjoyed watching Ivan mature from ne'er-do-well foil-of-Miles to a person in his own right, and his 'shielded' intelligence is perfectly rational, considering how sharp his closest (living) relatives are. We didn't get to see much of Padma; the circumstances of his death made him seem a bit thick-headed, but there were definitely extenuating circumstances, and I don't see Lady Alys having much use for a nincompoop, let alone marrying one; so Padma may have had the same sort of Claudius thing going to try to stay out of the lines of fire around the throne. (Camp stool.)
I think you are jiving us Lois. Ivan does not really seem as dumb as you have your characters say he is.
