Why I’m Not Dating After Divorce Yet

Why I’m not dating after divorce yet…a post I’m writing because I see other people making big mistakes in this area, and I want to help based on the lessons I’ve learned in the past year.

Why I’m Not Dating After Divorce Yet

I am speaking the truth in love to my friends and followers who are recently divorced with children at home.

I’m speaking out because I care so deeply about this issue as an adult child of divorce and now as a divorced woman.

If your dating after divorce (or heaven forbid, before your divorce is final) is causing increased anxiety or rebellion in your children, stop dating right now and put your children’s needs ahead of yours.

Going bold here: I have not been on a single date since my divorce in March 2022 and I don’t regret it, though I’ve been incredibly lonely and vulnerable in that time period.

Yet I remember the utter chaos that my parents’ dating caused when I was a child. It wrecked me with all types of emotions even at age 4, and I still have vivid, full five-sense memories of the pain and confusion it caused me.

I have also seen my own children suffer greatly in this time period due to toxicity out of my control.

Though I have been far from perfect, I have not added drama to their lives by bringing another person into the picture.

If your dating after divorce is causing increased anxiety or rebellion in your children, stop dating right now and put your children's needs ahead of yours.

What Your Children Need From You Now

Your kids need stability after divorce. They are suffering greatly now, and they will continue to suffer the rest of their lives from the aftereffects of your divorce, whether you wanted it or not. Whether you caused it or not.

As I say on Heart in a Drawer, my podcast for adult children of divorce, it is like a nuclear bomb going off with half-lives extending for many decades.

You have the power to decrease the chaos and serve as a stable base for your children. Even if the other parent is a wrecking ball, you can sacrifice your needs for a time for the benefit of your children.

I firmly believe you will never, ever regret this. You only have so many years with your children in your home.

Don’t inject 1,000 more problems into their lives by bringing a new person (and his or her kids and extended family) into your life too soon.

Your children (even teenagers) need your love, support, affirmation, validation, and most of all, focused attention from you. You need to fill your cup with good things to be able to pour out onto them – not drain your cup with a too-soon relationship. See tips on how to fill your cup below.

After divorce, you have the power to decrease the chaos and serve as a stable base for your children.

When to Date After Divorce

How soon is too soon? That differs for everyone. But the books I’ve read have said no dating for one full year – longer if you have been in an abusive situation, like I have been. Based on his 30+ years of experience, my counselor said he recommends waiting to date no less than one full year after divorce.

I’m over the grieving stage in my journey, but I’ve really just started the healing and forgiveness stage. I don’t know how long that will take, but I know it can’t be rushed. Sometimes it feels like two steps forward, three steps back. It will take as long as it needs to take, and that could be much longer than I want it to be. But that’s just part of adulting; you must do hard things for the greater good.

When I consider rushing ahead just to make myself feel better, I picture the faces of my three precious children in their moments of suffering post-divorce. I never, ever want to add any more pain to them by putting my search for a loneliness cure ahead of their own needs for healing.

Years ago, I listened to Dr. Randy Carlson’s Intentional Living radio show. He repeatedly told people to consider not dating after divorce until all children are out of your home. I’m not sure if I will follow that advice to a T, since my youngest is just now turning 15. However, I know I will not date anyone until I feel that my children are ready for me to take this step, and I will most certainly discuss it with them first (all are teens).

Don't put your search for a loneliness cure ahead of your children's needs for healing after divorce.

What to Do Instead of Dating After Divorce

So what can you do instead of dating after divorce? Get an accountability partner. Someone you can literally call day or night when you’re tempted to do something stupid like calling your ex, hooking up, posting inappropriate things online, shopping for therapy, drinking too much, taking drugs, viewing porn, or any other stuff you know you shouldn’t be doing.

Go out with your friends of the same sex. I love every minute of time with my girlfriends and I keep in touch with them regularly. They fill my cup with the love I need.

Go see a counselor. Journal. Take a walk. Splash your face with water. Go to sleep instead of staying up way too late.

Don’t read romance novels or watch romance movies if that makes things more complicated for you. Take in material that is edifying and encouraging instead of making you feel like you don’t have what you need.

Go to church every week – NOT to meet other people, but to worship God and learn from his Word. Listen to the playlist I recommend on this post to strengthen your faith in weak moments.

Educate yourself. Learn about the challenges blended families face. Family Life has an entire portion of its ministry dedicated to this topic. Learn HERE.

Pray in any way or fashion you need to do – mine has been screaming and cussing more times than I can count. God can handle it. Tell him about your loneliness, then ask him to help you stand firm for your kids’ sakes.

Give yourself abundant time to grieve, heal, and forgive. Process your emotions in safe spaces. Don’t complicate your life and your children’s lives by processing them with a member of the opposite sex to whom you are attracted.

Lots of tips for what to do instead of dating after divorce - for the sake of your children and your own healing.

Moving Forward

Remember this lesson I learned from Focus on the Family: The best marriages are built like houses. Friendship is the foundation. Advocacy (having each other’s backs) are the walls. Sexual intimacy is the roof.

So, if you start with the roof like I did with my failed marriage, guess what? You don’t have a house. You have a foolish, expensive, wasteful mess to clean up.

Instead, go slow by establishing friendship. You’ll never regret it. However, do the processing, grieving and healing at least while you establish friendship, preferably before.

Your children need to see you building a healthy relationship with another person. This will be a good model for their own future relationships.

Give yourself abundant time to grieve, heal, and forgive after divorce - before you ever consider dating someone new.

I’m Here for You

You can do this, friend! I’m rooting for you. You can send me a prayer request HERE.

If you’ve made mistakes, confess those to God today and repent – this means turn in the other direction. If you haven’t yet dated, don’t rush into it. Stay on the straight and narrow path for your children’s sake, and be proud of yourself.

I recommend calling Focus on the Family for a free, one-time consultation which will point you to a Christian counselor in your area. Then make that investment in yourself and your children. You’ll never look back with regret if you do what’s right by your kids and by God.

One Year Post-Divorce: Lessons I’ve Learned

I could write a whole book one year post-divorce about the lessons I’ve learned. Today, I’m giving you an overview in this blog post, plus announce a giveaway and a giving opportunity.

One Year Post-Divorce: Lessons I’ve Learned

If you’re joining me today from my devotion at Proverbs 31 Ministries, welcome! If you haven’t yet read the devotion, head HERE to get started.

Here’s a quick synopsis of my story.

In January 2022, my husband of 21 years left me and my three children abruptly. The divorce was final in early March. Immediately afterward, additional trauma developed right next to our physical location, and there was more betrayal trauma from family members.

Though the entire marriage was emotionally abusive and plagued by addiction, I reeled from the sudden shock. Eighteen months after his departure, I’m still trying to heal from the emotional pain, and I’m dealing with PTSD too.

I’m going to share the books and the playlist that have helped me the most during this time. First, I’m going to rapid-fire ten lessons I learned over the past eighteen months.

Ten Lessons I’ve Learned One Year Post-DivorceMy counselor told me about the four stages of grief from divorce, which go hand-in-hand with the five steps outlined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. See them in this post. It’s not that they don’t SEE – it’s that they don’t AGREE. So I eventually stopped trying to get abusers to see clear truth and focused more on managing my own emotions .Along those lines, don’t negotiate with emotional terrorists. The U.S. didn’t negotiate with terrorists post-9/11, and we shouldn’t negotiate with those bent on harming us either. See more HERE. You can and need to say whatever you need to say to God. Your prayers will get messy post-divorce, and God understands. Learn more on this post. It’s OK for a good girl to get angry at God. It’s natural, and I’d argue healthy, to get angry at God over the injustice of divorce – as long as you don’t stay there forever. Read more HERE. Grief follows a bell curve. You can see a photo of it and track your progress HERE. People unintentionally say hurtful things to you after divorce. You may hear things like THESE . However, you can process them with a counselor like I did, which has been so very helpful.Your body stores trauma. It keeps the score and manifests pain in ways you probably don’t realize. I talk about it in three episodes of my podcast, starting with THIS ONE. I also talk about broken heart syndrome HERE .My highly sensitive nature and photographic memory have made my grief harder. If you have either of these, learn more in THIS POST. Grief is non-linear, and so is healing. I’m currently on a healing journey, and you can see my favorite quote from the book I’m using on my healing journey HERE.

If you’d like to track more lessons I’ve learned post-divorce, please check out my podcast for adult children of divorce HERE.

May 2023 Christian Book Picks

Here are my May 2023 Christian book picks for you. This is a great group of books for spiritual growth.

Secrets of Sex and Marriage

This is a fascinating read full of research-based facts from a faith-based perspective. I guarantee you will learn something new and encouraging from this book, no matter how long you have been married. It will increase understanding, empathy, and creativity for both husbands and wives. This would be an excellent book for an engaged couple going through premarital counseling. It would also make a great resource to help a husband and wife navigate talks about sex and improve their physical, emotional, and spiritual connections.

I received a preview copy of Secrets of Sex and Marriage from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

The Lord Bless You

You may not think of the Lord blessing you much, and this book will help unpack this concept for you. It’s encouraging and will help you understand how to recognize blessings you receive from God. It will also inspire you to ask for more blessings and receive them with gratitude and expectation. A powerful little book that would make a great gift due to its portable size.

I received a preview copy of The Lord Bless You from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

My Daily Pursuit

Fans of A. W. Tozer will love this updated collection of his writings put into daily devotional forms. The devotions also include quotes from other classic Christian writers. You’ll be riveted by his no-nonsense tone and vivid word pictures that are still powerfully relevant today. A great gift for both men and women who seek deeper faith.

I received a preview copy of My Daily Pursuit from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

The Way of a Christian

Many of us are familiar with the classic story Pilgrim’s Progress, and this book repurposes it for a contemporary audience. It weaves a single truth from the book in a linear format and adds personal application for today. I appreciate the thoughtful application questions, which are good for individual study or group discussion. The layout and color scheme is pleasing to the eye as well. A good resource for a homeschool Bible study.

I received a preview copy of The Way of a Christian from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

The Military Guide to Disarming Deception

This is a sequel to a popular book on preparing for the end times. It’s an eye-opening look at how the devil will use deceptive techniques to sway people to his side in the days leading up to Christ’s return. Each chapter has a short story from a real battlefield and draws comparisons to what’s happening in today’s headlines. The chapters end with a section on Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures for how you can fight against deception in your own mind and faith. This book would be a great read for anyone interested in end times prophecy or military books.

I received a preview copy of The Military Guide to Disarming Deception from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

Hope for Ukraine

Though the news coverage of the war in Ukraine has wound down, the people of Ukraine are still suffering and in need of our prayers. This book gives us true stories of the struggles Ukrainians have faced before, during, and after February 2022 when war broke out. It will give you insight into their unique stories, inspiration for your prayers, and encouragement when you see how they are clinging to faith and hope against all odds.

I received a preview copy of Hope for Ukraine from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

Prayer Starters

What do you do when you are facing a crisis, but don’t have the words to pray? This beautifully written book by Suzanne Eller will guide you through hard times in three stages: trusting God in hard seasons, growing in hard places, and finding freedom in hard places. Suzie writes a short prayer for each day, then leaves space for you to start writing your own words back to God. She breaks in from time to time with a teaching vignette to propel you forward in your grief and healing journey. A wonderful book for someone going through a hard time.

I received a preview copy of Prayer Starters from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

The Clutter Fix

I need this book after 19 years of living in the same home, where clutter has been piling up for a while. It’s just the accountability partner I need to not only clean up the spaces I know that need decluttering, but the spaces I tend to ignore. I like the seasonal plans, quizzes, affirmations, and 120 things you can throw away right now. Lots of practical ideas to help you start decluttering this weekend, then keep up with your commitment for cleaner spaces from now on.

I received a preview copy of The Clutter Fix from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

The Time-Saving Mom

I’m always looking for more tips and suggestions for managing my busy schedule. Crystal Paine is a super-busy mom who shares her system for getting so many things accomplished. I liked her 6×2 priority system, her suggestions for getting more exercise, and her crowd-sourcing in nearly every chapter from other moms who share great ideas. If you need help organizing your schedule as a mom of littles or a homeschooling mom, this is a great book for you.

I received a preview copy of The Time-Saving Mom from the publisher.

Get your copy on Amazon or CBD.

The Power to Change

I enjoy books on personal growth, goal setting, and habit formation, and this book has it all, plus spiritual formation. I like Craig’s funny, self-effacing stories that show how he struggled in the past but overcame with practical steps. He lays them all out in this book, which is helping me change my mindset regarding the goals I’m setting for myself. A great book for both men and women who want to be more intentional.

You’re Going to Make It

This book is exactly what I need as I heal from past trauma. If you have worked through a good portion of your grief, and you’ve finally reached the stage where healing is possible and attainable, this is the perfect book for you. The devotions are powerful, meant to be read just one day at a time. You can’t rush through this book, and you won’t want to anyway, because the pictures are beautiful and the prayers are deep. Use this book as a companion for journaling and counseling sessions, as I’m doing, and see my favorite quote from it HERE.

Still Here and Still Struggling to Serve

Are you a woman in ministry who feels frustrated by the roadblocks to serve in the ways you are called? Gena McCown knows how you feel and writes a smart, affirming, and thought-provoking book on the unique struggles women face while serving in the church. If you know you are called to do more than what is traditionally expected of women in the church, yet you still want to follow a biblical model, this book will empower you and help you think through your next steps. An important and necessary book to facilitate much-needed changes.

I received a preview copy of Still Here and Still Struggling to Serve from the publisher.

Now or Never

It’s difficult to find a clean Christian romance with middle-aged love interests. This book fits the bill as a romance develops between 50-somethings who are looking for a new start. I’m loving this story in the Awestruck series, catching up with it on my Kindle every chance I get. An encouraging read that hits the right notes for the middle stages of life.

Book Review: God Knows

Here is my book review for God Knows, a new book by Lisa Whittle. It’s a great read for anyone in the trenches of faith.

Book Review: God Knows

In my own suffering of 2022 and beyond as I recover from divorce and multilayered betrayal trauma, I have needed constant reassurance that God is near and he not only knows but cares about what I’m facing. This is what Lisa beautifully affirms in her newest book, God Knows.

Whether you’ve been a Christian all your life like me, or your faith is rather new, you are guaranteed to face situations where your faith is rocked to the core. The really hard things in life shake us down, and it’s easy to turn away from God when we are hurting. Even when we know that he knows our pain, but seems to do nothing about it.

Lisa lovingly yet firmly helps you understand why you question God’s goodness when you suffer. She gives all kinds of practical tips for rerouting your thinking when it stinks, and clinging to faith even when things get harder, not easier. This is an excellent book you could give to someone going through a very hard time and is questioning whether God really cares about their hurt.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from this book:While we judge things by the surface, God knows the subplot.Sometimes a dream isn’t what is causing your insecurity problems. Sometimes you need to hold on a little longer, and only God knows why it hasn’t happened yet.A strange mix of unwavering confidence and consistent humility is required to keep pursuing a dream. It takes a lot of Jesus to stop wanting to pay someone back. There can be moments of happiness and pleasure even with the companion of hardship.

This book is excellent for individual use and would make a fantastic resource for an honest, deep-seeking small group.

The Top 10 Reasons You Need a Book Launch Manager

I love being a book launch manager, and I’ve also managed my own book launches in the past. Over the past 10 years, I’ve participated in dozens of launch teams. Here are my thoughts on the top 10 reasons you need a book launch manager.

The Top 10 Reasons You Need a Book Launch ManagerYou are new to the world of book publishing.

An experienced book launch manager will help you know what to do and what not to do for your book launch.

You are self-publishing for the first time.

With a self-published book, all the marketing responsibilities are on you. You can share those with a book launch manager so you don’t have to bear the full load on your own.

You are publishing with a traditional publisher.

Many traditional publishers do not give you much help, monetarily or otherwise, with marketing your book. But the manager for your book launch can help you do that.

Social media isn’t your jam.

Social media is an essential tool for launching your book. If you don’t love social media, your manager can handle it mostly on your behalf. Just know that the most successful launches do involve some author participation.

You work full-time.

A book launch is time-consuming, and it also requires physical and emotional energy. If you don’t have the bandwidth to handle this on top of your day job, it’s wise to hire experienced help.

You have a thriving ministry.

You need to devote plenty of time and energy to keeping your ministry going. Adding a book launch on top of that could cause stress and anxiety. A book launch manager can serve your launch team while you serve your people.

Your followers are new to launch teams.

Perhaps the people who will be most helpful in spreading the message about your book have no experience being on launch teams. A seasoned book launch manager will know how to explain how launch teams work to newbies.

You are good at some tasks, but not others.

Maybe you’re great at graphics, but you don’t love Facebook groups. Perhaps you love speaking, but you aren’t a detail-oriented person. A book launch manager will be good at all these things necessary for a successful book launch. You can get a customized package to fit your unique needs.

You aren’t up-to-date on the latest publishing trends.

Perhaps you’ve been on launch teams before, but you don’t know what Facebook allows or prohibits in group postings, or what Amazon looks for in reviews. It’s a book launch manager’s responsibility to keep up with the latest information on how to post reviews and what is allowed in Facebook groups. You can trust me to know the latest information on what is working right now.

You want to get booked for podcast interviews.

Not every book launch manager offers podcast interview bookings, but I do! Podcast interviews are a great way to introduce your book to more people. I can connect you with dozens of podcasters who are ready to book interviews with new guests.

There are more reasons why you need a book launch manager, which I’d love to discuss with you in a free discovery call. Book one with me HERE , and check out this page for more info about my book launch packages or coaching calls if you want to run your own book launch.
