Lord of the Liminal Space: Filigree
I’m in a liminal space in 2023 – that means it’s an in-between space arching over what was and what will be. As I recover from my divorce in 2022 and many other losses, I’m seeing this year as a liminal space, and I am acknowledging God as the Lord over it all.
This year, I’m starting something new: an unedited prayer poem every day, written in just five minutes. I’m writing it based on the names of God I find in my One Year Bible readings.

Lord of the Liminal Space – FiligreeBased on this reading from the One Year Bible for February 8.
O Lord
you desired
gold filigree
in the settings
of the precious stones
representing
your twelve tribes
on the ephod
Aaron wore
when he went before you
to represent your people
and seek your will.
Though your people
had hurt you
dishonored you
and turned against you
you saw them as beautiful
and wanted to see
their colorful stones
surrounded by gilded intricacies.
As Aaron carried them
over his heart
when he sought your will
for your people
you chose to see
their beauty
rather than their sin.
You could have commanded
plainness
but you longed to see
your people
crowned with beauty
like a bride
for her bridegroom.
O Lord
be my filigree
in this liminal space.
Wrap your love
around me
in intricate beauty.
Twine your tendrils
over my hardness.
Set my colors
in your shining gold
against this darkness.
May your lovely filigree
hold me firm
as I go before you
with all my concerns
and may I depart
from your throne
with greater peace.

Lord of the Liminal Space – InvestorBased on this reading from the One Year Bible for February 7.
O Lord
you have invested
much in me:
time
talents
treasures
and you entrust me
to manage much
in this liminal space.
Though I am tempted
to bury what you have given
I feel the five-bag weight
in my hands
and know
you want me to share it.
Not just scatter your gifts
around
but multiply them
through investment.
So each day
I take a small portion
put it to work
then receive a bit more back.
I use the overflow
to create more
the next time.
Progress is slow
when I focus on days at a time
but month by month
I can track my growth.
O Lord
since you invest in me
may I invest
in your kingdom work
so one day
I might hear
well done
good and faithful servant
even from what I produced
in this period
that feels so limited.

Book Review: Becoming His Masterpiece
I am enjoying Becoming His Masterpiece and it is my chosen devotional for Lent 2023. Here is my book review.
As an avid reader and artist, this book is very appealing to me. I love the full-color pages with abstract art that illustrate each day’s devotion. The writer’s perspective and insights are helpful too.
As you will see in just one example below, there is plenty of space to record your thoughts and prayers in this beautiful book.

O Lord
as I drive by
store windows
displaying wedding dresses
I mourn
the pearls and lace
hidden in my closet
and I run my fingers
along the bodice
of the black shroud
I wear now.
My wedding dress
was perfectly fitted
for me back then
but would not fit
if I tried it on now.
Right now
you have custom fit
me into clothes
of mourning
ideal for this time
when I need more layers
of comfort
and a water-resistant exterior
so my tears
will run off
rather than soaking in.
But in your back rooms
you are already sewing
a garment of praise
for me to wear someday
a gown fit for dancing
when you will help me out
of my mourning clothes
and lay the joyful shawl
on my shoulders
before I join
the celebratory feast.

O Lord
your voice
is powerful enough
to stir mountains
split cedars
strip forests
and shake the wilderness.
May I take comfort
knowing
your voice
is a lightning strike
against all
who are unholy.
Your voice
is also
the whisper
after the hurricane
earthquake
and fire.
The quiet voice
I hear most clearly
in the midnight hours
speaking to my heart
so close
as if you were
in the flesh
beside me.
Your voice
affirms
comforts
guides
corrects
and encourages
as I fall back asleep.
In the morning
while I ponder
what you spoke
so tenderly to me
may I always remember
the One who draws so close
is also the Almighty
whose voice echoes
above the sea
and thunders
with glory.

Lord of the Liminal Space – ProtectorBased on this reading from the One Year Bible for February 4.
O Lord
you long to gather me
under your wings
like a hen who protects
her chicks
and in this liminal space
I allow you to cover me.
Your ancient commands
protect me from harm
keeping me from hurting
myself and others
serving as the guidelines
for my desires
thoughts
and actions.
You protect me
from those who do evil
the ones who act
as if nothing is wrong
while inventing new forms
of evil in their hearts.
As I sit under the shadow
of your wings
I cry out
for vengeance
asking you to give them
the punishment
they so richly deserve
in proportion
to all the suffering
they have caused
so many.
Pay them back
and give them a taste
of what they have done
in their wretched wickedness.
Since they care nothing
for your commands
tear them down
so they can never
be rebuilt.
Because you are my protector
I can voice my cries of anguish
from the safety of your covering
then praise you
as my strength and shield
my helper
fortress
and shepherd
who offers protection
with your rod and staff
in this valley
that will lead

Lord of the Liminal Space – Delegator
I’m in a liminal space in 2023 – that means it’s an in-between space arching over what was and what will be. As I recover from my divorce in 2022 and many other losses, I’m seeing this year as a liminal space, and I am acknowledging God as the Lord over it all.
This year, I’m starting something new: an unedited prayer poem every day, written in just five minutes. I’m writing it based on the names of God I find in my One Year Bible readings.

Lord of the Liminal Space – DelegatorBased on this reading from the One Year Bible for February 3.
O Lord
you care
that I am spread
so thin
in this liminal space
where everything
presses down
on my shoulders.
Where practical concerns
pile up
emotional stress
multiplies
spiritual loads
weigh down.
But you meet me
in my overwhelm
and call my burden
too heavy for me
to carry myself.
So you appoint me
to do what is best
with my own gifts
and instruct me
to delegate tasks
to others.
They are helping me
carry the load
with their regular prayers
and practical help
often lifting me
when I have no strength
left to give.
You are the delegator
of these roles to them
so I never walk
through this valley
alone.

O Lord
you had already planned
sustenance
for their physical needs
yet did not turn away
when they voiced
their desires
not from need
but from bitter complaint.
You rained down
bread from heaven
flakes good only
one day at a time
save a double portion
to account for Sabbath rest.
You gave them
just what they needed
no more
no less
yet they could not store it
as a daily reminder
of their dependence
on you.
O great manna
like dew
every morning
feed me one moment
at a time
in this space
where my empty soul
cries out in hunger.
Turn not away from me
even while I complain
as I wrestle with you.
Build me back up
bit by bit
as I bake and boil
what you give me
then taste it
sweet like honey
in my mouth
and may I then praise you
for this gift.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Cloud

Lord of the Liminal Space – CloudBased on this reading from the One Year Bible for February 1.
O Lord
you went ahead
of the Israelites
every day in the wilderness
in the shape
of a cloud
as a pillar
that towered over them.
They knew where to go
because they saw your presence
in this towering cloud
an unmistakeable sign
you never left them.
O Lord
in these long winter days
where the clouds persist
and block the light
may I view them
as a sign of your presence
constantly over me.
May I remember
your cloud once settled
between your people
and their enemies
separating them
the night before
you split the Red Sea
and obliterated
every wicked enemy.
Oh may I see
your clouds today
as a sign of hope
that you are keeping me
separate
from evil
that my enemies
will soon be
destroyed
that I will someday
exit the wilderness
and enter my
promised land
free from
a slavery mindset.
