Praying for God’s Provision

Are you praying for God’s provision? I’ve started doing this on a regular basis, and this is what has resulted.

Praying for God’s Provision

Let me start out by saying this – I do not believe in prosperity gospel teachings. I believe those are teachings from false prophets and wolves in sheep’s clothing in the church (Mt. 7:15-20). God is not a genie who we command to give us what we want.

However, I do believe in God’s provision as a loving Father. The Bible is full of wonderful and encouraging verses that teach us this, including these:

For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills. Psalm 50:10 NLTThere your people finally settled, and with a bountiful harvest, O God, you provided for your needy people. Psalm 68:10 NLT“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” Luke 6:38 NLTAnd this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NLT

It is perfectly fine to be praying for God’s provision if we pray these scriptures over our lives. The main posture we must first take is surrender to God’s will and trust that he will provide exactly what we need if we are asking, seeking and knocking (Mt. 7:7-12) while working hard (Gal. 6:4).

Testimonies of Praying for God’s Provision

After my painful divorce in 2022, I experienced financial setbacks as most people do after divorce. However, I have seen God answer my prayers for provision since that time, and I’m excited to share the testimonies with you.

Testimony 1

Our beloved dog needed surgery that I couldn’t afford. My children suggested setting up a GoFundMe account. I prayed about this, and God affirmed the action. This stretched me way outside my comfort zone. In just about a month, we were able to raise the exact amount needed for the surgery. Writing that huge check on surgery day was a surreal moment of thankfulness and awe at God’s provision. Praying for God’s provision during that month of fundraising helped me trust God more. It also helped me see how many of my brothers and sisters in Christ were willing to show me love and kindness through their donations.

Testimony 2

Through word of mouth, God has provided several book launch management contracts for me. These contracts have come from the many connections I made through blogging, podcasting, LinkedIn, and conferences over the years. I’m so incredibly grateful for friends like Amy, Amber, Alex, Christa, and many others who have referred clients to me. It’s a harvest I’m now reaping from years of making connections, and the Lord is connecting all the dots for me now as a book launch manager. It’s wonderful to see how he provides for me as I pray after having discovery calls with potential clients.

Testimony 3

Recently Amazon invited me to be part of its Vine influencer program. This invitation-only program lets me choose up to three items per day from a catalog of over 22,000 items to receive for free in exchange for my reviews. I can order things I actually need, and this is a huge blessing. This isn’t a coincidence, since I’ve been praying for God’s provision. I consider it a creative answer to my prayers. You can subscribe to my YouTube channel where I’ll be doing unboxing videos of the items I receive each month, including a video this Saturday of my first Vine delivery!

Another Reason I’m Praying for God’s Provision

In my 21-year marriage, I knew I was being emotionally abused. However, until I went through post-divorce recovery, I didn’t realize I was also being financially abused. Praying for God’s provision now is healing me every time the old voices of abuse tempt me to believe lies about finances. The prayers are literally rerouting my neural pathways and helping me see that God is on my side and will help me overcome my financial struggles.

Why You Need to Be Praying for God’s Provision

Here in the U.S., many of us are financially blessed. We forget that everything we have comes from God, and we are simply stewards of his gifts to us. Praying for God’s provision reminds us that all we have belongs to God, and all we need comes from his hand. It increases our trust and dependence on him rather than in our own abilities, talents, and experiences.

If you commit to praying for God’s provision daily, as I am doing now, I hope your trust in him grows each day. I think this is even more important than actually receiving financial blessings. Those are wonderful and much-needed in my situation. But the most beautiful part of this story is learning to rely on God more and join the adventure of surrendering to him.

May these verses guide you as you are praying for God’s provision:

You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. Psalm 63:5 NLTI have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches. Psalm 119:14 NLT

Thanks for reading and sharing!

Praying for God's provision isn't about the prosperity gospel - it's about trusting God more. #finances #prayer #provision #financialtroubles

Why I Wrote Hope for the Hard Days

My seventh book, Hope for the Hard Days, is now available on Kindle and will be available in paperback soon! This is why I wrote Hope for the Hard Days.

Why I Wrote Hope for the Hard Days

Hope for the Hard Days is a collection of 100 encouraging devotions. For five years, I wrote every Friday for Woman 2 Woman Ministries. That’s a lot of devotions! I wanted to collect many of them in one convenient place, and I knew a book would be a good option.

I also wrote Hope for the Hard Days because my readers ask me when my next book is coming. Hope for the Hard Days is my seventh book – I have three traditionally published books, and this devotional is my fourth self-published book. You can see all of my other books on this page.

Since I will have booths at three local craft fairs this fall, and my local readers love buying new books from me, I knew it was time to have another book available for purchase. Right now, Hope for the Hard Days is only available on Kindle. But by Oct. 24 I plan to have the paperback version ready, right in time for in-person sales at the shows.

Who Needs Hope for the Hard Days

Why this topic? I believe many of us are facing hard days more frequently than ever before. The hits just don’t stop coming. That has certainly been true in my life since my painful divorce in 2022 and all the trauma fallout since then.

I know I’m not the only one who needs hope for the hard days. That’s why I wanted to share this book with you. A devotional has short readings that are convenient for busy readers, and who isn’t busy these days? I also organized the book into 14 sections, so you can go straight to what type of encouragement you need that day.

If you’d like to help me launch this book between Oct. 9 and 27, 2023, please apply HERE. I’d love to have you on my team!

I’d also love to hear from you once you’ve read the book. I’m prepping an exclusive snail mail gift for anyone who leaves an Amazon review of Hope for the Hard Days. Get in touch with me HERE when you’ve completed your Amazon review, and a gift will be on its way to you this fall!

My seventh book, Hope for the Hard Days, is now available on Kindle and will be available in paperback soon!

Order your Kindle copy HERE.Join the launch team HERE.

Book Review: I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore

I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore is an ideal book for someone who feels confused and hurt after trauma. Here’s my book review.

Book Review: I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore

I have had a Job-like nuclear reboot since 2022 like Carole Holiday recounts in her new book, I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore.

She writes about her life meltdown with beautiful lyricism and picturesque metaphors.

The joy of food carried her through hard times, and she graciously shares recipes as well as trial-tested wisdom and affirmation like this one:

It’s a book about grieving what you lost, rediscovering your true identity in Christ, and recycling the pain to help others – that’s all exactly what I am trying to do now, and Carole is inspiring me.

I only wish this book had been available last year when things were so very hard for me. As I continue to process my trauma now, this book is a godsend at just the right time.

If you are looking for that kind of encouragement, don’t hesitate to get this lovely book HERE.

Also, here is my favorite quote from the book:

I Don't Know Who I Am Anymore is a new memoir that will strengthen your faith in hard times. #idontknowwhoiamanymore #christianbook

Book Review: But First, God

But First, God is a great new audio book. Here’s my book review.

Book Review: But First, God.

I don’t listen to many audio books, but I was excited to get the chance to listen to But First, God by Julie Chen Moonves. I played it in the background on my desktop computer while I worked.

Though I have not regularly watched Big Brother or The View, I did know Julie was a host of these shows. So I was vaguely familiar with her.

This book gave me a surprising glimpse of her professional, personal, and spiritual life. Julie tells about how her faith made her stronger in some hard seasons, and her testimony is inspiring.

One of the most powerful parts of the book for me is how Julie said she was convicted of the sin of gossip. The View is a show based on celebrity gossip. Over time she began to see that she needed to let go of the focus on gossip and follow God’s guidance to love others. This personally convicted me in a meaningful way, and I’m grateful.

It’s an engaging, inspiring, and encouraging audio book that is perfect for Julie’s avid fans, and also a great choice for people like me who didn’t know her story very well.

You can head HERE to get a chance to win this audio book for free, or go ahead and order it at a low price HERE.

But First, God is a wonderful new audio book that will inspire your faith. #butfirstgod #audiobook #bigbrother #christianbook

Book Review: Grit Don’t Quit

Grit Don’t Quit: Developing Resilience and Faith When Giving Up Isn’t an Option is a great read! Here’s my book review.

Book Review: Grit Don’t Quit

It’s late August, and at first glance, the broccoli plants in my garden are looking pretty beat up.

But I’ve tracked their progress ever since I set them out this spring. They showed great promise in April and May.

However, with attacks from cabbage moths at least three times, they were chewed down to nubs. You can still see some damage here.

Weeds also tried to crowd into their spaces and steal much-needed nutrients from the soil.

Finally, a few heat waves (including one last week) threatened to cook these plants while they were still in the ground.

However, after the rains and a new cool front transitioning us to autumn in Missouri, I think I’ll have a bumper crop of broccoli pretty soon.

My broccoli plants are showing grit. They aren’t letting anything take them down. I want that type of tenacity, resilience, and grit in my life.

Fortunately, I am finishing up reading Grit Don’t Quit, which gives me an outline of how to have more grit in tough times.

Grit Don’t Quit Quotes

Following the apostle Paul’s story, Bianca Juarez Olthoff explains the necessity of grit in Christian life. She tells compelling, entertaining, and funny stories from her own life that illustrate her own need for grit, and inspire you to find it for yourself.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from Grit Don’t Quit:

“Obeying God, even when we can’t see what lies ahead, is the most powerful thing we can do.”“When you’re able to articulate what you want and why you want it, you will tap into the resilience, grit, and perseverance needed to dust off and go where God tells you to go.”“When life gets tough, grit is formed when you can see reality for what it is…You must maintain clarity about your reality, however uncertain, all while maintaining an unwavering faith that in the end, you will more than conquer.”“One person plus God is an unbeatable equation.”

I also enjoyed Chapter Ten: What to Do in the Waiting which gives lots of practical tips for handling the “seasons of same” in our lives with greater grit and tenacity.

I’m compiling my list of favorite reads from 2023 out of over 100 books, and this one is on the shortlist. It’s got that great combination of solid teaching mixed with meaningful stories and injections of humor. You’ll even find some neuroscience in this book, so it’s sure to teach you something new. The book is great for personal or group study, so get your copy HERE.

Grit Don't Quit is a great new read to keep you on track when life shoves you around. #gritdontquit #gritdontquitbook #grit #christianbook

Book Review: Midlife Battle Cry

Midlife Battle Cry: Redefining the Mighty Second Half is a wonderfully funny and wise book! Here’s my book review.

Book Review: Midlife Battle Cry

When the loudest overnight storm of the year wakes you up THREE TIMES between 12:18 am and 4:32 am the night before you have a 5.5+ hour solo drive to a conference, you just have to find a reason to laugh.

I am glad I had this hilarious book to cheer me up. Around 1:30 am, when I was reading about what happened while she was making out with her past boyfriend, I quiet-laughed so hard that tears squeezed out of my eyes and I woke my dogs up.

It is a great book full of affirmation and encouragement, with a few butt kicks thrown in. I’m not quite as far along in midlife as Dawn is, yet I appreciate her big-sister leadership into the next stage of my life peppered with so many laughs.

She has so many great pop-culture references for Gen Xers like me, which made it feel very girlfriend-friendly. I love her self-deprecating humor as well as her time-tested faith. My favorite quote from the book that is still making me laugh is this one:

“I even thanked [God] for my turkey neck, albeit through clenched teeth. A turkey neck, I thought to myself, is better than no neck at all.”

Dawn lovingly proves how our midlife years really are better than our twenties in so many ways. It’s time to look forward with renewed joy, even though we may need to fight for it. Midlife Battle Cry is your plan for getting through the challenges with greater hope and bigger smiles.

Ministering to My Brothers

This is why I’m ministering to my brothers…my testimony for you.Though I grew up only with sisters, and did not date very much as a teen, I’ve always had male friends. So many times since my teen years, males of all ages have approached me to unburden their struggles. It’s been an honor to listen and guide them as the Lord spontaneously leads them to me. Here’s how it got started.

My First Ministry to My Brothers

Around the time pictured here in my life (1999), I started realizing I have a very unique ministry calling.

To graduate from Covenant College, I was required to complete a cross-cultural service experience. My heart had been drawn to Bosnia since the war in 1994, and I had signed up for an overseas mission trip. But the U.S. government shut down all non-military travel to Bosnia that year, so I had to make other plans closer to home.

That summer, I became a teacher’s aide at the local juvenile detention center. I was nervous about this, having no prior experience with this age group or culture. I had to pass through security each day to get in and out, which felt weird to me at age 21.

But soon enough, I got to know the young men in my classroom pretty well. Rather than being difficult and moody as I had expected, most were fun-loving, curious, talkative, and good-hearted. They came alive on Fridays when they were allowed to listen to music for good behavior (I always think of them when I hear Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna…” since they jammed to every word).

One special Friday, they asked me if I wanted a tour of their personal space. I agreed, and they delighted in showing me where they hung out and slept. They proudly showed off their belongings and their precious family photos.

I am glad I never knew what they did to get in there. Instead, I had the privilege of getting to know them as real people, flawed but beautiful.

They let their guard down around me since I offered friendship, and I sensed what an honor it was to have a door open into their lives.

More Ministry to My Brothers

Perseverance

It took a long time to understand that God had called me into a unique ministry. Time after time, too many times to count, I have been called to minister to males of all different ages. These times have always come unbidden, and it’s been an honor each time.

I have lost count of how many times this has happened. But here are just a few examples of the opportunities God has given me to spontaneously minister to men:

A pest spray tech told me about his night terrors related to childhood abuse. An appraiser shared his grief about his mom’s passing and cried on my steps. One man spent 45 minutes unloading all his burdens about his hopes to be a better husband, father, and provider while we waited in the hall for jury selection. When I was a high school secretary, a very popular boy with a deep mother wound befriended me, visiting me for a few one-on-one moments every day.I comforted and affirmed another high school senior after he had a wreck.Another young man who I knew from that school met me in public years later and opened up about his extreme anxiety.A bartender at a Nashville restaurant told me how heavy it was to carry the primary load of responsibility for his family while working with labor shortages and supply chain issues during and after the pandemic.

These situations happen over and over again, and it’s such a joy to serve when the Lord makes these opportunities happen.

It's such a joy to serve when the Lord makes these opportunities happen. Ministering to My Brothers - a testimony. #ministry #christianliving

Serving My Brothers as a Woman of Integrity

I wanted to be a woman of integrity in these interactions. So I frequently looked to Abigail’s example in 1 Samuel 25. These are the principles I have taken from her in my moments of ministry:

She was humble. She did not use her beauty to manipulate David. She affirmed David’s calling because she had done her homework. She did not let her own unmet needs (being married to a fool) get in the way of her ministry.

I also have learned to make good eye contact, listen well, ask thoughtful questions, and gently point them toward a more hopeful future.Sometimes I get to share about faith, but I always share about what God has done for me rather than preaching to them.

It is a joy to do this whenever God calls me to it, and I never know when it will happen. I feel as if it’s a reward for my pursuit of spiritual maturity because I don’t feel like I could have done this as well when my faith wasn’t as tested.I have also taken measures to guard my heart and stay as anonymous as possible (like paying in cash) because I want the man to get the blessing and God to get the glory rather than me to have an ongoing connection (unless God directs otherwise). In a handful of conversations with other brothers and sisters in Christ, they have agreed that this type of ministry is necessary but needs to be handled with great care and wisdom. When it is done well, it can make a lasting impact. I know it has made a powerful impact on me.

You can learn to serve your brothers in Christ as a woman of integrity. #ministry #brothersinChrist

How I’m Ministering to My Brothers Now

Though my primary writing and speaking ministry is to women, I wrote Hidden Manna on a Country Road for men too, because I know from these experiences that they need encouragement in their faith. I’m hoping and praying that God will use my book to minister to both men and women, and that God will continue to give me one-on-one, spontaneous ministry opportunities as he sees fit.

Since my recent YouTube video went viral, I discovered that 72 percent of my viewers on YouTube are males ages 30 and up. So I will be making more videos each week to serve the needs of my brothers. You can see my first video in this series HERE.

What thoughts does this post stir up in you? God has been nudging me to share it, and I know it’s because certain people need to hear it and think about how it applies to them. I’d love to hear your feedback in the comments below. You can also send me a prayer request or feedback HERE.

Giving Opportunity

If you have found this post or any other resource of mine to be helpful, I’d appreciate your gift of any amount to help fund our family dog’s second surgery this fall:

As a thank-you for your gift of any amount, I’m emailing this hand-drawn printable to every donor. You will receive both the black-and-white and color versions. These flowers are in the meadow in my front yard, and I enjoyed drawing them just for you!

Thank you in advance for your help in this challenging time for me and my teens.
