Out with the Old, In with the True
Out with the old, in with the true is a quote I just heard from a new client. It’s a great quote to start off the Lenten season.
For Lent 2025, I’ll be writing new blog posts every day. I’m writing for just five unedited minutes on a quote of the day to deepen our faith in this Lenten season.
Day 1 – Ash Wednesday, March 5This quote has stuck with me since I heard it on Tuesday. My new client was commenting on the story of my life I had just shared with her, and she encouraged me with this word. We’ve all heard the phrase “Out with the old, in with the new.” But I hadn’t heard the spinoff “in with the true” until yesterday.
I’m coming out of a long season described as a dark night of the soul. It’s when my faith has been shaken to the core, and my thought life has been sabotaged by trauma and severe depression. I need a thought life refreshment that focuses forward with hope, and I can’t think of a better time to start that than Lent.
Growing up Lutheran, I practiced Lent with a solemn reverence. It was a time to reflect on the suffering Jesus endured on our behalf. The season always turned my thoughts inward. Even as a child, I reflected on my sins and my need for the salvation only Jesus could give me. That’s what made Easter morning so joyful after seven weeks of deep contemplation.
This is what I want to focus on in 2025 as I come out of a tough season filled with dark thoughts. I want to find inspiring quotes based on faith, some from my own books, and ponder them with you in this journey of writing publicly again for the first time in months. I welcome your comments below as you ponder what the quotes mean to you.

Best Christian Books of 2024
These are the best Christian books I read in 2024, out of over 100 books that I read all year.
Best Christian Books of 2024
This is an ideal book for someone going through a spiritual depression, dark night of the soul, or deep disillusionment with the church. It ministered right to my most personal, inner needs. I highlighted dozens of powerful quotes and teachings. I will be recommending this book to many others for years to come.

J. S. Park, a hospital chaplain, does not shy away from the hardest questions Christians face in their grief. He even talks about his own breaks with reality and his humble, painful questions of himself and God in his mental and spiritual struggles.
I’m not going to lie – it is full of triggers that folded me in half while I read them. Yet those of us in the depths of grief are desperate for true words of comfort from legitimate sources on the raw edges, not anything plastic or pithy. That’s why this book is so refreshing in its dark beauty.
Probably the most important takeaway is that you don’t get on with grief – you walk WITH grief. I’m learning to do this and it’s making an enormous difference in my mental health.

This was my favorite devotional of 2024. It is filled with hopeful moments, beautiful stories, lovely metaphors, and hard-won encouragement. It’s a perfect read for springtime too.

This is an extremely helpful book if you need to set a no-contact boundary, or if you have already set one. I have several in place, and this book helps me stand my ground. The teaching is solidly based on scripture. I am thankful the author speaks the truth in love as she advocates for abuse victims like myself.

The second book in this series was wonderful. I loved the redemption stories for both characters who were struggling to trust again. One of them seems like a healthy enneagram 8. It was a good glimpse for me because I have been hurt by the unhealthy 8 type. Book 1 is excellent too, and I enjoyed the recognizable details of a city I love when it was in its early development stages.

This new book is different from all others Dr. Cloud has written. He has written this one for his non-believing friends because he wants them to understand why he believes what he believes.
He talks about supernatural occurrences that cannot be explained but are undeniably true.
God has also used Dr. Cloud to help others in miraculous ways, and he even used him to stand up to a satanic worshiper way back in college.
Now I know I’m even less alone because Dr. Cloud recounts those types of stories in his book. The storytelling style is so engaging.
As a fellow author, I’m very impressed that Dr. Cloud decided to go this deep and spiritual with his memoir written to non-believers and pre-believers. I think he’s letting the stories speak for themselves because they are less about him and more about how God can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and however he wants. This is powerful stuff that’s well worth sharing with the non-believers in your life who may be curious about faith.

The Garden Within is one of the best books I read all year. What I love about it:
– Insight into how God designed our neurons to reflect his glory
– Fresh looks into the Garden of Eden and the parable of the soils for personal application
– Rich gardening metaphors that affirm my emotions and give me hope for deep healing
This is a book to be savored slowly. It holds the potential to change your life if you grasp the wonderful truths it unfolds.

This was a delightful romance. It did a great job describing someone with an anxiety disorder. It is also a good redemption story for recovering addicts. I liked how the story had several different storylines that tied together. It wasn’t just a romance story for young adults; it had a love story for middle-aged adults too. I enjoyed how the story pulled me forward all the way through to the end. It was a good escape that I needed, and it entertained me while encouraging me.

Since I love gardening, I enjoyed the metaphors and pictures throughout. I enjoyed the poetry and prayers sprinkled into the manuscript, as well as the interesting quotes. It’s a great read for a beginning or experienced gardener who is passionate about faith.

If you enjoy sewing, you will love this devotional by Naomi, a talented and experienced sewist. It contains lots of encouraging metaphors as she leads you on a journey to pursue peace. Whether you are a novice or an expert, I know you’ll love the sewing metaphors stitched into each chapter.

If You’re Starting the New Year with Depression
If you’re starting the new year with depression, I’m there with you today. I want to offer you advice based on my many cycles of depression since childhood, and my fourth dark night of the soul in three years.
These are the things I’m doing today after taking time to reflect on everything that happened in 2024, which felt depressing for several reasons. I want to get to a better place, and I hope you do too.

Before you read this list, if you are experiencing any feelings of self-harm, please call or text 988 right now and get the help you need. You can also chat at https://chat.988lifeline.org/. Reaching out for help is an act of bravery and you deserve it, friend. I have been there more than once. I got out of that pit with outside help, and you can too.
Get counseling.Counseling is a must, not an option. It helps you get outside of your head, which is essential for healing from depression. It may take a while for you to find a counselor who is a good fit for you, so don’t give up if a counseling session doesn’t click with you. If you are a Christian, you need to seek counseling from a Christian counselor. You can get a free, one-time counseling session and referral HERE.
Don’t hold anything back in your journal. It’s a safe place to record all your thoughts, whether they feel good or bad to write out. Even as a Christian, I hold nothing back in my journals, often cussing and complaining to the full hilt. Journals can be a good place to sort out your feelings, discover the sources of your pain, and reflect on the progress you are making day to day and month to month. This is the journal I’m using now – I like it because it’s beefy enough to hold six months of entries.
Just be.You may be a high achiever like I am, who feels like you always have to be doing something or working on something. This season, I’m trying to just “be” rather than “do.” That means being present in the moment, getting more comfortable with the spiritual discipline of silence as described in this book, and taking one day at a time as I learned at every Al-Anon meeting I attended.
Try persevering over hoping.In the excellent book The Night is Normal, Dr. Alicia Britt Chole says that perseverance is more useful and attainable than hope when you are going through dark nights of the soul. Hope has certainly felt too expensive for me in my recent seasons of depression. I am persevering now by practicing the rhythms that make me “me:”
reading morning devotions – here is one I recommend engaging in daily exercise eating right for better serotonin uptakespending time in nature , even on grey days reading 100 books per yearlistening to Christian praise music giving myself time to think every dayjournaling 3-5 times per weekworshiping in a corporate church service nearly every weekI know when these impossibly difficult seasons are over, I won’t regret keeping these rhythms. They connect my brain to my heart, which has been in retreat for the past few years. They also keep me connected to God even when I feel angry and sad toward him.
Give yourself room to grieve.The best book I read in 2024 is called As Long As You Need, and it’s all about grief. Often grief is the underlying cause for depression. This book helped me realize how little I understood about grief, how much I need to make space for it, and why it may take longer than I ever wanted it to take. I’m leaning into grief by crying just about every day (that’s a sure sign of depression, FYI), pushing through the pain arc while the tears flow, and then arriving on the other side feeling just a little bit better. Again, discussing grief in cognitive behavioral therapy with your counselor can be very helpful.
Be authentic.If you feel better by writing down three little things for which you are grateful each day, I recommend that because it’s scientifically proven to boost your mood. Right now it doesn’t feel authentic for me to practice gratitude. I am currently recovering from years of breadcrumbing from people who used me for their selfish purposes. So right now, gratitude isn’t cutting it. However, I am being authentic by practicing lament in my prayer life, and authenticity is the only thing that is really working for me.
Since I have seasonal affective disorder, which is triggered every fall with the time change, I have learned the importance of using light therapy on days when grey clouds hang low. Using my Happy Light for an hour or so each day greatly impacts my overall well-being. I also get outside any day the sun is out no matter how cold it might be, because sunlight makes an enormous difference in my mood.
Consider medication.I have not taken medication for my depression, but you may need to do this, and that’s perfectly fine. Speak to your doctor about the right treatment for you. However, I recommend that you combine all the above treatments with medication for a holistic approach to your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. In discussions with my counselor, I have realized my depression is more situationally based than chemically based, yet I also choose to address my serotonin uptake issues with alternative methods. This season, I’m also trying a new thing – St. John’s wort tea. I also have found much help through this daily supplement, which helps regulate my sleep and gastrointestinal health.
Connect with others.Though I’m a true-blue introvert, in this season I feel much better around other people than I do when I’m alone with my depressing thoughts. Connecting with others face-to-face each day is probably the most impactful thing I’m doing right now to manage my depression. It’s another must-do step for your healing, not really an option. I have tips to help you reach out on this post.
Depression can steal your joy, even in things you used to enjoy. However, I can escape from depressed feelings for a little while when I do things just for me. In my world, this looks like making art, watching Kansas City Chiefs games, giving myself a manicure, and birdwatching. Your list will probably look different from mine, yet I hope you can come up with at least one thing that you enjoy once per day for a moment of respite from the hard things you are facing.
Those are the best tips I have for you today. I pray that as you put them into practice, you’ll feel a bit stronger and more healed every day. Here are the best books I recommend to help you if you’re starting the new year with depression.

If Christmas Is Hard for You
I hope this Christmas is easier for you than Christmas 2020. I hope you aren’t still in full lockdown, and I hope you don’t have the exact same fears and losses you did last year.
But I know this Christmas may still be hard for you, and I have practical encouragement for you in this season.
Maybe you are dealing with new challenges that are affecting many of us, like inflation, financial or workplace stresses due to labor shortages, or frustration over supply chain problems.
Perhaps you are handling everyday junk like relationship issues, health problems, temptations, or winter blues. Those seem to affect us year after year, pandemic or not.
Maybe you have new griefs, new losses and new sorrows harrowing your heart this December. The first holiday season for these problems is always the hardest.
If Christmas is hard for you this year, I have hope for you. It’s hard-won hope I’m glad to share from my time in former trenches.
Here are five pieces of encouragement for you:The Christmas season has a limited time span. We tend to place a truckload of expectations on Dec. 24 and 25, perhaps more than we do for any other days of the year. Mercifully, they are confined to the same 24-hour periods, and that never changes. God will be right beside you in every second, minute and hour of those days, just as he has been before (Heb. 13:5b). He’ll carry you through as you vent your honest feelings to him in prayer.God is working behind the scenes of this Christmas on your behalf. When I look back on Christmases that were particularly hard for me, I can now see the seeds of hope, joy and peace God was planting back then. I couldn’t see that during the darkness and turmoil of those years. But now, years later, God is reaping the harvest. He is likely planting lots of seeds in this season for you too, preparing good things to be reaped in the future (Jer. 29:11).You only need one person to help you walk through this hard Christmas. Just one encouraging friend can lift your spirits. The part you play is reaching out to them. I remember how lonely and sad I felt in past seasonal depressions, but how much better I felt when I simply called a friend or met someone for lunch. You aren’t meant to walk through this season alone. God will give you the courage to reach out if you are willing to do your part (Matt. 7:7-8).Volunteering can lift your spirits in this hard season. There is something mysteriously wonderful about giving to others when you feel down. In the Christmases where I intentionally gave my time away to ministries and charities, I received an instant mood boost. Just an hour or two at your local church, library, blood donation center, food pantry, school or other places could make a huge difference. If you feel well enough to volunteer, you’ll receive far more than you give (Luke 6:38).There is no shame in reaching out for higher-level help. I spent five years in therapy, and the sessions before Christmas made an enormous difference in my peace level. A few hours of talking with a pastor, counselor or Stephen Minister may help you get through this season. You can contact Focus on the Family for a free, one-time counseling call like I did years ago, or ask your local church to refer you to a Christian counselor. Remember, God often uses others to lift us out of our pits (Psalm 40:2).If Christmas is hard for you, I pray you will be strengthened in your faith as you ponder these truths. Don’t hesitate to take action on one or more of them. I pray that in the new year, you’ll be able to look back and see how God was good to you even in a hard Christmas.

When Headlines Stir Your Anxiety, Set Your Mind on Things Above is a post I wrote for Devotable right before the 2020 election, and I believe it still applies today, one day before the 2024 election. Here is the repost.
When Headlines Stir Your Anxiety, Set Your Mind on Things AboveSet your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2 NIV)
As I write this devotion, we are in the thick of election season in the United States. Tensions are running high. People are frustrated, upset, anxious, and angry. Opinions fly wildly on social media. Both sides blame each other. No one knows what the future holds, or when the definitive declaration of the winner will be announced. If you focus on the headlines, your anxiety is sure to rise. Negativity runs rampant in the news.
But the headlines don’t have to dictate your thoughts.
In this challenging time, we have many choices. We have choices about how to cast our votes, and also choices about our thoughts, words, and actions.
Focus on Things AboveI wrote two books about using Christian meditation to transform your thought life. One of the best verses to meditate on in this challenging season is Colossians 3:2:
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
When we choose a heavenly mindset, rather than an earth-focused mindset, we have the peace that transcends all understanding (Phil. 4:7), the kind of peace that only God can give (John 14:27). Peace that can defeat the anxiety stirred up by the headlines.
You can choose self-control instead of anger, joy instead of negativity, and goodness instead of selfishness. Love instead of hate. Gentleness instead of harshness. These are all gifts the Holy Spirit provides us (Gal. 5:22-23), and we must choose to focus on them in this season.
Don’t Focus on Earthly ThingsOur enemy Satan would love nothing more than for you to set your mind on earthly things. After all, he is the prince of this world (John 12:31) who will one day be defeated. For now, he’s working as hard as he can to wreak havoc on the earth and in your thought life. He’s even using the headlines to do his dirty work.
You can fight back with the power of Scripture, just as Jesus did when he was tempted. You can rebuke the devil, saying, “Get behind me, Satan. A Call to PrayerNext time you read the headlines, consider them a call to prayer instead of an anxiety trigger. Praise God for his sovereignty over our world. His perfect control is exercised from his throne in heaven, where Jesus sits at the Father’s right hand.
Study the verses surrounding our theme verse for today. Let your thoughts rise to heaven, where your real life is hidden with Christ (Col. 3:3). May your prayers over the topics in the headlines be a sweet offering to the Lord.
As you surrender your anxiety, negativity, harshness, and other sins to God, he will pour out spiritual blessings on you. Receive these blessings gladly and share them with others. This way, you’ll spread God’s heavenly kingdom here on earth. You’ll have the peaceful mindset of a heaven-focused person, rather than an anxious earth-focused mindset.

A Letter to the Compassionate Christian Voter
Today I have a letter to the compassionate Christian voter. I hope you’ll consider what I have to say before you vote.
A Letter to the Compassionate Christian VoterDear compassionate Christian voter,
I have heard some of you saying you won’t vote for a man who is a womanizer, has been accused of lies, etc. You are voting from a place of compassion for victims.
I understand and appreciate your concerns as a victim of abuse, infidelity, and lies.
Let me offer you another perspective. Feel free to unfollow after you listen.
The ChallengerFor decades I was in a close relationship with an incredibly unhealthy Challenger personality type. You can read about those characteristics HERE.
However, if that type of person were in a contest against a woman leader who is projecting herself as compassionate, I would still closely look at their voting records before casting my vote.
Here’s what I know about the Challenger. This person was born to be a leader. They are extremely unwavering under pressure. Better than anyone I know, they get the job done – all in the professional world.
That’s where the vote matters most – in the professional world. Our president is not a pastor, who is righteously measured by character. Don’t hear me wrong – it’s not that character doesn’t matter for candidates. However, getting the job done in this extremely divided culture marked by intense spiritual warfare certainly does.
What Is Really At StakeI am going to be very bold right now and say that our vote is really between freedom and socialism, not between a jerk and a seemingly compassionate woman.
Compassion is NOT open borders, asylum for criminals, “free” health care for all, bigger government, etc. That’s the path to socialism, which is not what the founding fathers wanted for our country. Neither do I, because a socialist system squashes freedom.
Let me put it to you one more way. Let’s say a storm tears off your roof. Would you do deep research into the roofing contractor’s personal track record? Most of us would pick the one who offers a reasonable price, shows up, and patches the hole ASAP. We need that more than “compassion” in the cultural crisis we are facing.
Go to THIS SITE before you vote. Vote on the issues, NOT the personality. Don’t let your compassion be played in this election.

A 2024 Prayer for America
A 2024 Prayer for America is on my heart today as storms rage, devastation occurs, and politics divide. Will you pray this scripture-based prayer with me?
A 2024 Prayer for AmericaI’m writing this 2024 Prayer for America and inviting you to pray it with me.
O Lord God Almighty,
We come before you today on our knees.
Our hearts are distressed.
Concern weighs on us.
Fear tempts us.
We fear what the future holds.
Today a huge storm rages and threatens to hit with full force.
Many are still devastated by a recent hurricane.
Our country is divided by hatred and confusion.
Blame is cast on every side.
Racism is rising.
Children are suffering.
Distrust is rampant.
It seems our whole culture is being shaken from top to bottom.
We lay our problems at the feet of the cross.
Yet your word tells us this:
“I, only I, am the Lord, And there is no savior besides Me.”We are your witnesses today, O Lord.
We claim you as our God and Savior.
Only you can rescue our great country from demise.
Only you can save us from these storms that are shaking our world.
So we cast our anxiety upon you, for you care for us (1 Pet. 5:7).
Jesus, you also told us these things:
“See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many people. And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains.“Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. And at that time many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will rise up and mislead many people…because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will become cold. But the one who endures to the end is the one who will be saved. This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”Lord, we do not know if we are living in the end times or the end of our culture.
However, we know that with each new day, we are one day closer to your return, Jesus.
We confess that we are alarmed by wars, rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters.
We have been misled by false prophets who have infiltrated your church and fed us the prosperity gospel, progressive teachings, and radical twisting of truths to the far left and far right.
Our culture has moved away from its Christian foundations and prostituted itself with the false gods of materialism, entertainment, pornography, and greed.
We have allowed the ancient false gods of Chemosh and Molech to steal and kill millions of our children with our willing consent.
We have utterly wasted the abundant gift of your word and most of us are biblically illiterate, being more satisfied with milk than meat.
Romans 1:21 NIV
Our families are shattered by divorce, abuse, addiction, betrayals, and estrangements because we live for ourselves rather than submitting to you and one another.
Though we have been given five bags of gold in our freedoms and blessings, we have squandered and hidden them, rather than investing them for your glory.
O Lord, we confess our many sins before you, both personally and corporately as Americans.
We deserve your wrath for how sinful we have become as a nation.
Yet we come to you today, asking for your mercy.
For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, who suffered and died for us, may we receive your grace, Heavenly Father.
Lord, we find hope in this passage.
We know you have always preserved a remnant of true believers from the beginning of time, and you are preserving one today in America.
May those of us who know you and trust you get serious about our faith today.
Help us to look at our fellow Americans through your eyes, not our own. May we see them with compassion, like harassed and helpless sheep without a shepherd. Show us what we can do to encourage them and build them up rather than tearing them down.
May we offer prayerful and practical help to strangers because you move us to be your face, hands, and feet to them.
May we act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, Lord (Micah 6:8).
Give us hope when we hear about revivals breaking out across our country.
Use these hard times we face to draw us closer to you and one another.
Help us not give up the habit of meeting together, but to draw strength from one another in the Church.
May we let our light shine before others so they see our good deeds and glorify you in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
Fit us with armor for the spiritual warfare we will face as persecutions increase.
Help us endure to the end, and fight the good fight of faith for your glory.
We praise you, Lord, as the King of all the earth!
No one can rule like you.
You appoint leaders for us and give us the freedom to vote.
May we submit our wills to yours as we cast our votes this November.
We pray for protection for our leaders; may no weapon formed against them prevail (Isaiah 54:17 NIV).
We pray for fair, honest, truthful elections not tainted by falsehood.
Today we ask you for another great revival to sweep this nation.
We pray that when people turn their hearts over to you, true change will occur.
May you establish our beloved America as a city on a hill once more to bring light and life to all nations.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Celebrating 1000 Blog Posts
Today I am celebrating 100 blog posts since August 2015, a big accomplishment in my writing career.
I started blogging in 2010, yet I got serious about blogging regularly in August 2015.
I got up at 4:30 a.m. and blogged for a couple of hours before getting ready for work. This practice helped me write and publish my first three books, which I did from scratch on KDP.
Because I wanted to build an email list, I wrote weekly blog posts for my readers. The Tea on Tuesdays newsletter deadline helped me produce many blog posts.
I also guest blogged on many sites. For one site, I wrote every Friday. I compiled my guest posts into monthly roundups, which provided more blog posts and eventually turned into my latest book.
Over the years I’ve learned about the power of SEO for online writing. That’s helped market my books and services.
Now I blog less often, yet I receive traffic on my older posts primarily through SEO and Pinterest searches.
I still enjoy blogging, because writers must write. It’s a fulfilling place to share my thoughts and ideas in my writing ministry.
Why Blogging Isn’t DeadBlogging isn’t dead. It’s still an excellent way to get people to find out about you for the first time.
I’ve worked as a freelance writer for many businesses such as attorneys, dentists, and contractors, who all needed active blogs to continue driving traffic to their sites.
I still apply this strategy for my books and services for authors, and I have coached over 100 clients since 2020 on blogging strategies.
