What I Always Do When Wrestling with Complex Issues
This is what I always do when wrestling with complex issues, particularly in an election year when I am called to vote.
What I Always Do When Wrestling with Complex IssuesLast night I watched the debate, and so many complex issues were on the discussion docket.
Since 1996, which was the first year I was eligible to vote in the presidential election, I have wrestled with complex issues by putting them through the exact same template.
The template I use is Genesis 1 and 2. The reason I use it is because that was the time before sin and evil entered the world. God’s original plan and design was fully intact. It’s also a preview of how life will be restored to us in the new heaven and new earth, as described in Revelation 21 and 22.
This simple yet incredibly profound template makes issues easier for me to understand. When I think deeply, carefully, and thoughtfully about God’s design for the family, government, nature, and development as described in these two chapters, it gives me clarity on how I should vote.
As I stated in my recent post, Two Important Reasons to Vote This Year, we will all have to stand before God regarding our voting choices. This is especially true for Bible-believing Christians. I want to stand before God’s judgment throne someday and tell him that I tried my best to filter my voting decisions through His Word first rather than my own feelings and preferences.
How You Can Wrestle with Complex Issues Using Genesis 1 and 2I encourage you in these 33 days remaining before the election to read Genesis 1 and 2 at a slow pace and regular frequency. As you approach these holy, inerrant, and infallible scriptures, you can pray directly to the Holy Spirit. Ask him to enlighten you to the unchanging truths He will show you in God’s Word – it’s one of his main jobs. Look at Genesis 1 and 2 through God’s eyes, not your own. Submit to his guidance, sovereignty, and beautiful design for how he created the world to be.
Two excellent books that are giving me incredible insight into Genesis 1 and 2 right now are “The Garden Within” and “When Your World Ends.” They can be extra credit reading for you. Yet I encourage you to first encounter the actual Scripture yourself and immerse yourself in its truth before you vote this year.
God might change you through this process. Don’t resist him, but welcome his loving correction and guidance.
I welcome your respectful comments below.
Christians, here is the template you can use when wrestling with complex issues, such as how to cast your vote. #vote #election #trustGod #christianliving

An Autumn Prayer-Poem of Praise for Small Blessings
I wrote an autumn prayer-poem of praise for small blessings based on my meal this weekend, and I hope you enjoy it. Please share it on social media if you love it!
An Autumn Prayer-Poem of Praise for Small BlessingsLord, I thank you
for autumn lunches
full of nurturing.
I praise you
for the crunch of kale
whose iron binds
with citric acid
in piquant cranberries
and crisp cabbage
to infuse my red blood cells
with strength they need
while the salad sings and dances
on my palate.
I praise you
for wonderfully crafting
butternut squash
to blend so smooth
with onions, celery, butter
nutmeg, turmeric, salt
flour, bay, broth, and cream
then transform
into an almost cheesy goodness
a cozy sweater
that wraps me
with comfort.
I thank you
for all the hands and feet
that brought brown bread to me
as if I were sitting in the beautiful
St. Louis restaurant
yet I’m simply at my table.
I praise you
for apples cooked down
in big kettles
and spiced with cinnamon
for me to spread
with fresh butter
on my little loaf.
I taste and see
that this is good.
You are good.
I’ll be posting more prayer-poems of praise on Sundays, so please follow my blog to see more of them.

The Best Christian Book Picks – September 2024
Here are the best Christian book picks for September 2024 as I pursue my annual goal of reading 100 books yearly.
The Best Christian Book Picks – September 2024These are some great books for both children and adults. You can find them all in my Amazon shop. Let me know the one that interests you most in the comments below.

This is a great new resource to use alongside your personal Bible study. It has several sections to help you get more out of your readings, such as observations, principles, application, and call to action, to name a few. There is plenty of space to write so you can look back and see how much you have learned in the past weeks and months.

I’m enjoying this deep dive into the book of 1 Peter, which Amy Lively has spent much time studying. She has found hope even in the hard times described in 1 Peter and the personal stories of hardship she has experienced. This is a non-sugar-coated yet fully encouraging book with probing questions and good applications.

I’ve always been intrigued by the story of Tamar, and wondered what happened to her after her major trauma and banishment.
This historical novel is based on much research and is fascinating to read.
While it is most certainly well written, I am giving it four stars. Unlike most historical fiction I’ve read from the period of ancient Israel, the characters seem stiffer and less emotionally accessible to me as a reader.
Also, there are a few concerning details about Tamar “praying” to her relatives for guidance and practicing some pagan rituals. I think the story would have been stronger to leave those out.
However, it’s a book worth reading even with these issues, mainly for the sense of history you’ll likely gain for the first time.

If you have a hard time understanding how the Old Testament applies to your life, Donna Amidon traces how Jesus is central to all Old Testament teachings. She leads you through a chronological study, starting in Genesis, to show you where you can find Jesus in ancient Bible scriptures. She also brings warmth by sharing her personal stories in each chapter, which keep you engaged.
This devotional is both meaty and practical, covering many areas for discipleship and spiritual growth. It’s my new chosen devotional for the fall. It’s a 365-day devotional you can start anytime, and it would make a great gift. You can see a preview of a recent devotion from it HERE.
This is a wonderful study on the book of Colossians, where the author promises that we can find abundant promises for our daily lives. The book is broken into seven weeks of study with five lessons for each week. I like the meaningful application questions most in this insightful book. It is perfect for individual or group study.
Though Rickey Smiley is a well-known comedian and radio host, I didn’t know his story until I read this book. In it, he details the harrowing experience of losing his firstborn child to addiction, and how he processed his grief afterward. It’s an authentic look at how we need to grieve after loss, and how God can help us through our hardest times. Any parent who has lost an adult child will deeply appreciate his wisdom.
This is a devotional journal on different aspects of God’s grace. It is beautifully designed with good prompt questions after engaging devotionals. There is plenty of space to record your thoughts and write your own prayers to God. The devotions are short but meaty, so this would be a great resource to use for spiritual growth over a three-month period.
Many people want to read the Bible but are intimidated by it, especially the Old Testament. This helpful book is an overview of the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Pentateuch. It gives explanations of cultural settings, links to how the content points to Jesus as our Lord and Savior, helps you explore challenging questions, and offers practical application for daily life. I’ve included several photos above to show you the type of content it outlines.
This is a beautifully illustrated picture book for children ages 4-8 from talented artist and writer Ruth Chou Simons. Inspired by Psalm 23, it incorporates portions of the beloved scripture into contemporary language to craft a lovely story that both boys and girls will enjoy.
This is a good story about overcoming anxiety with bravery and helping others. Its setting is a race, and the lessons are gently presented as the story unfolds. Children will enjoy the colorful, action-filled illustrations and soft-touch feel of the book cover.
This is an oversized book with wonderful illustrations of all areas of the world. It’s highly engaging with lots of facts and pictures. It’s also faith-based with testimonies of Bible characters and well-known Christians. This would be an excellent resource for homeschool families and children who love studying geography.
This is a delightful story to encourage children who don’t feel special. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and engaging. The story has a surprise ending and a fun way of educating while entertaining. It’s a sweet story with reflection questions at the end, and it will make a perfect gift for a child’s birthday, Christmas, or just because.

Two Important Reasons to Vote This Year
If you think your vote doesn’t matter, here are two important reasons to vote this year.
Two Important Reasons to Vote This YearFirst, the excuses I’ve heard include the following:
1. My vote is just one of many – how could it possibly matter?
2. Someone else’s vote cancels mine out – so why bother?
3. The results are “rigged,” so who cares?
4. The electoral college picks the winners, so why does my vote matter?
I have voted in every presidential election since 1996, the first year I was eligible. I’ve also voted in many local elections, and these are the reasons that motivate me to vote this year and every year.
In fact, it’s only been 104 years since women could vote in the United States! As a woman, I cherish the right to make my voice heard at the polls. It’s something many of my sisters in Christ around the world in the persecuted church would love to have. I don’t take my right to vote for granted, and if you are a woman, I compel you to cast your vote this year.
2. Most importantly, I filter all of my actions through this verse:“So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” Romans 14:12 NIVAs Americans, we are automatically born with “five talents” as the parable of the talents in Mt. 25:14-30 describes. We have been given SO MUCH freedom and responsibility, and we will all have to answer to God for how we stewarded it.
When I’ve been tempted to think my vote doesn’t count, I picture myself standing before God’s glorious judgment throne at the grand accounting of my life. I expect God to ask me, “What did you do with the right to vote I gave you?” I want to tell him I took this assignment seriously by voting from an educated position with the best of what I knew at the time.
I hope these thoughts encourage you to vote this year. However, don’t vote just based on the fact that a candidate is a man or woman, white or black, likeable or unlikeable, etc. Do your research and base your decision on voting records, not rhetoric.
Get informed, take your vote seriously, and cover it in prayer. Your vote really matters to God more than anyone else. It’s an investment in the future.
Respectful comments only, please.

What Dave Ramsey Taught Me About Writing
For years I’ve been inspired by what Dave Ramsey taught me about writing, and today I’m sharing my lessons with you.
What Dave Ramsey Taught Me About WritingI have learned much about money management from Dave Ramsey, which I have also applied to writing:
1. Pay yourself first.John Grisham wrote his books on his early morning commutes as a young lawyer. If he had not put in that additional time, even while working 70 hours a week, his novels may not exist today. As Dave says, if you don’t pay yourself first, no one else will. You need to make writing a top priority.
2. Sell the car.Dave often tells people to sell the car. It’s an investment that loses value quickly and often takes a big chunk out of the budget. You can drive a beater for a while and attack debt with the car payment money. Similarly, when I quit my day job to write full-time, some priorities and expenses needed to be cut right away. That hurt a little, but soon made a big difference, which leads us to the next point.
3) Be consistent. If you write consistently six days a week (Dave advocates Sabbath rest and so do I), you will live like very few others in the writing world who give up way too soon. Consistency produces a library of content you can endlessly repurpose, plus it helps you find and refine your voice. Do this now, and later you may be able to live like no one else with your writing dreams (I.e. traditionally publishing, speaking, etc.) since you’ll be building that all-important platform.
Thanks goes to Dave Ramsey for his amazing wisdom, which has inspired me more than I ever expected.

Do You Even Want to Get to Know Someone on the Other Side of the Aisle?
With the first big debate happening tonight, I have an important question for you, particularly if you are a Christian…
Do you even WANT to get to know someone on the other side of the aisle?Let’s explore that question today.
Do You Even Want to Get to Know Someone on the Other Side of the Aisle? When I attended the Global Leadership Summit this August, I was impacted by many teachings, including this one by Michael Jr.:
“If you don’t get curious, you’ll be furious.”I’m not going to tell you which side of the aisle I’m on, or which one to be on.
But I AM going to tell you since kindergarten, I’ve had friends who are on the other side of the aisle from me. Friends with whom I do life, like sharing meals and attending events together. Some of these friendships have lasted for decades.
Lately, I’ve been asking myself why this is true because it certainly seems unique in our current culture.
I can’t speak to why my friends chose me, but I can say why I chose them:They make my life richer, more interesting, and far more beautiful. These friends stretch and expand my viewpoints. They show me how God is working in their lives, which is sometimes vastly different yet often quite similar to how he works in mine.My friends teach me how childhood experiences, religious backgrounds, family dynamics, and socioeconomic settings inform their decisions and shape mine too. They challenge my tendency toward black-and-white thinking and help me see the amazing nuances of God’s love and grace.I don’t normally discuss politics with them, because I tend to say really stupid things that I deeply regret later. However, as I grow in wisdom, I try to practice curiosity rather than getting furious about stark differences of opinion.
I’ve realized that there is a low chance I will change their opinion, and vice versa. So I focus more on enjoying their company, celebrating their humanity, and as Paul said in 1 Cor. 9:22 NLT: “Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some.”
The most important thing I talk about with them is faith. I also look for open windows to do this, rather than preaching at them. Faith is what can unite us, while politics tend to divide us.
What thoughts does this post stir in you? I’d like to hear your thoughts below. Respectful comments only, please.

My New Services for Christian Authors
I’m excited to announce my new services for Christian authors today!
My New Services for Christian AuthorsLast weekend I reinvested in my business by purchasing an IMac, which will help me add these services to my offerings for authors:
Book cover designInterior formattingIllustrationI already offer these services which perfectly fit in with my new services for Christian authors:
EditingBook launch management12-month marketing planWhy did I add this now?
In the past two years, I have been asked these questions at least 20 times:
“Do you design book covers?”
“Do you do interior formatting?”
My answer was that I only did this for my own books because they require Adobe software, and I was stuck using my beloved dinosaur, a 2003 EMac. I was OK using that slow computer for my own projects, but not for clients.
For two years I have prayed for the finances to be able to go pick up a new computer from the Apple Store in St. Louis. Since I have been blessed with many book launch contracts lately, I decided to reinvest a portion of them for this purchase and trust God to provide.
Getting my new IMac was pure joy, and I can’t wait to start using it to help authors.
I am putting packages together so you can take advantage of affordable pricing for polishing, publishing, and marketing your book.

Here’s a Secret About Book Sales
Here’s a little-known secret about book sales I learned from my publisher at Leafwood.
Here’s a Secret About Book SalesDuane at Leafwood Publishers told me that your book needs to be sold twice, not just once.
We all know the first one: it must be purchased from a brick and mortar store or an online retailer.
The second one is the secret: it needs to be sold AGAIN once it’s in the reader’s possession. This is where it gets really hard, because lots of things compete for your reader’s attention.
Think about it:
How many other items are competing for your attention if a book you are reading is on your bedside table or kitchen table, or in your bag? Literally thousands, right?
Also, if you read on your Kindle (or your Kindle app like I do on my IPhone), there are so many other things competing for your attention there too.
This secret about book sales can be your motivation for marketing your book. I have told my 100+ clients that writing is only 20-30 percent of the process, and marketing is 70-80 percent of the process.
You’ll need to do this before your book launches, during the launch itself, and for at least a year after the launch, and I can teach you how.
Book Marketing Mastery to Help Your Book SalesI’m passionate about offering my Book Marketing Mastery group, where I lay out principles for a 12+ month book marketing plan to help authors sell their books without sounding salesy and wearing people out with their constant book posts.
This group is part of several services I offer for authors, including editing, book launch management, and more – you can learn about them on my Services page.
How did this secret resonate with you? Let me know in the comments.\

Three Great New Books for Teens and Young Adults
Here are three great new books for teens and young adults. Keep reading to learn more.
Three Great New Books for Teens and Young AdultsI received three great new books for teens and young adults to review, and here are my honest opinions.
The Enneagram for Teens
I’m fascinated by personality tools, and I love discussing the usefulness of the enneagram with my three children (ages 20, 18, and 16). My daughter and I regularly talk about being Enneagram 1’s, and all the delights and challenges of that configuration. We also talk about other types and learn how to relate to them with greater understanding. This book is an excellent introduction to the topic. It gives good insight into understanding yourself and others better, so you can be more loving and forgiving. I highly recommend it.

Embracing Imperfect
As I’ve said many times, I’m a recovering perfectionist. It would have been wonderful to have this resource when I was a teen and my struggle with perfectionism was at its height. The devotions clearly contrast the difference between being a perfectionist and being a high achiever. I think this is a great way to affirm a teen’s strengths while pointing him or her in a healthier direction.

Sunny Days Ahead
I have long forced myself to focus on the positive against my natural melancholy bent. This is a great book to help young people do just that. It doesn’t gloss over hard things, yet it does point them in brighter directions, all based on scripture and research. The short chapters of this book and the previous one are great for busy teens and college-aged men and women.

These all would make great gifts for a teen or young adult in your life. They would also be good books for group discussions.
