What a Broken Heart Feels Like
What a Broken Heart Feels Like is a poem I wrote in 10 minutes this Sunday morning. I hope it affirms your hurt and encourages you if you have a broken heart.
What a Broken Heart Feels LikeI look for the pen
to heal me again
since pouring out words
and pictures
seems to help.
In the book I open
the joy expert asks:
“What does your heart
look like now?”
A waterfall bursts inside
and finds its exit
in rivulets down my face
as I picture the seat of my emotions
desires
and longings:
battered
bruised
broken
purple, blue, and black
delicately strewn with orchid petals
and held in hands
I don’t trust.
It’s not even beating.
How can it possibly hope,
much less seek joy?
No wonder
after a lifetime of suffering
then three long years
of daily torture.
Yet it is held
by the only one
with the breath
of life
the only one
who can breathe life
back into it.
So my tears
form a little ocean
around the heart
cocooning it
in intensive care
as I wait for the healer
to make it whole again.
What a Broken Heart Feels Like - a poem of faith. #poetry #faith #brokenheart

7 Spiritual Reasons You Might Be Waking Up in the Middle of the Night
There are 7 spiritual reasons you might be waking up in the middle of the night. You might think it’s just insomnia or indigestion if you’re waking up in the middle of the night, and that could be true.
However, it might be a special way God wants to speak to you, too.
Here are 7 spiritual reasons you might be waking up in the middle of the night.Reason 1: God Wants Your Full AttentionMany of us are so busy and distracted in our waking hours that it’s difficult to hear God’s voice.
The quiet hours of the night can be a good time for God to get your full attention.
Your mind might be occupied with other things in the daytime.
That’s why the middle of the night might be the best time for God to speak to you.
Responding to God in the Middle of the NightIf you wake up in the middle of the night, you can always respond to God like young Samuel did:
“Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Sam. 3:10, NIV)
Then you can listen for God’s response in His still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12).
His voice is often easier to hear in the middle of the night when it’s quiet.
Reason 2: God Wants to Encourage YouMany of us need encouragement in our relationships, careers, finances, health, and other areas of life.
God may want to encourage you in a special way in the middle of the night.
He might help you ponder things more deeply than you normally do in the daytime.
Looking for God’s Encouragement in the Middle of the NightIn the middle of the night, you can look for ways God is faithful to you even in your difficulties.
You can be encouraged by examples of His constant care for you (1 Pet. 5:7).
The next time you wake up, ask God to show you how He wants to encourage you, and He will!
Reason 3: God Wants to Teach YouJesus said that when He left the Earth, He would send the Holy Spirit to believers.
He said,
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (Jn. 14:26, NIV)
You can always use the time you’re awake in the middle of the night to open your Bible and ask God to teach you something new through your reading.
The Holy Spirit might teach you something in the middle of the night that He wouldn’t normally teach at any other time of day, because He has your full attention then.
Reason 4: God Wants to Direct YouAre you seeking direction for a decision you’re making or a life path you are taking?
The middle of the night can be a good time to seek God’s direction.
Next time you wake up in the midnight hours, ask God to direct you.
His Word says,
“The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9, NASB)
You can ask God to direct your steps in the plans you are making for the future.

When we stray from the path, God offers us correction.
He does not do this to shame us; instead, he offers us discipline like a loving father as described in Heb. 12:11.
He might use the middle of the night as a time of testing and examination (Ps. 17:3, NIV).
If God Wants to Correct You in the Middle of the NightWhen God wants to correct us, it’s good to remember that Proverbs tells us,
“Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise.” (Prov. 15:31, NIV)
So if God decides to correct you on something in the middle of the night, count it as a kindness instead of a punishment.
Decide right then and there to take a different path, and you’ll be wiser because of it.
Reason 6: God Wants to Remind YouIn the middle of the night, the Holy Spirit may bring up memories in your mind.
Those memories might stir things that God wants you to work through with His help and perhaps the help of others.
When memories come to the surface, ask God what He wants to remind you.
He may use those memories to help you remember times He was with you when you felt alone (Ps. 73:23).
He may be reminding you how He provided for you when you were losing hope (Ps. 119:147).
Reason 7: God Wants to Bless YouWe always need to be reminded that God loves us.
Maybe God wakes you up in the middle of the night because He simply wants to tell you He loves you.
He might want to bless you with special insight or knowledge as you seek Him with your whole heart (Deut. 4:29, NIV).
You can always receive a blessing from God in the middle of the night by reading this passage or speaking it out loud:
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Num. 6:24-26, NIV).

Strength in Motherhood: 10 Inspiring Biblical Mothers Who Endured Hard Things
Do you count yourself among mothers who are enduring hard things?
In honor of Mother’s Day, let’s look at these 10 mothers in the Bible who endured hard things.
They can encourage us in our own journeys as mothers now.
1. EveEve’s name means “mother of all the living,” as described in Gen. 3:20.
She was the first woman to bear a child when her son Abel was born.
Sadly, she was also the first woman to endure the loss of a child, when her son Cain took Abel’s life (Gen. 4:8).
Though she endured this terrible difficulty, she was blessed with the birth of more children, including Seth (Gen. 4:25).
Seth was in the bloodline of Jesus, the Savior to come from Eve’s lineage, as described in 1 Chronicles 1.
Eve’s story is encouraging because God redeemed the bad for the greater good.
2. HagarHagar was an Egyptian slave in Abraham’s house.
Since his wife Sarah could have no children, Abraham agreed to Sarah’s idea to have a child through Hagar.
However, after Hagar conceived, Sarah mistreated Hagar, so she fled, as told to us in Gen. 16.
Though Hagar was mistreated and abused, God met her in the wilderness and spoke encouraging promises about her pregnancy.
The angel announced God’s promise to her:
“I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.” (Gen. 16:10, NIV)
Though Hagar suffered, God took care of her and fulfilled His promise to her, as He takes care of us too.
3. SarahSarah was Abraham’s wife, and she dealt with the hardship of infertility.
But God opened her womb well into her eighties.
The birth of Isaac when Sarah was 90 years old made her laugh and brought her great joy, as described in Genesis 21:1-17.
Through Sarah’s story, we learn that God can do miracles even in situations that seem impossible.
4. LeahLeah was unloved by her husband Jacob, who was tricked into marrying her.
However, God saw that Leah was unloved, so he blessed her with children to comfort her (Gen. 29:31).
Leah received the honor of being Judah’s mother.
Judah was the one chosen in the 12 tribes of Israel to be the bloodline of King David and eventually Jesus.
God redeemed Leah’s sadness and turned it into a great blessing for many.
5. HannahHannah was childless and tortured by her husband’s other wife, who had children.
In her distress and grief, she poured out a request to God in prayer:
“Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head” (1 Sam. 1:11, NIV)
God honored her request, and Samuel became one of the greatest prophets in Israel.
Through Hannah’s story, we see the power of prayer and the blessing of a mother’s sacrifice.
6. BathshebaBathsheba was Uriah the Hittite’s wife. However, King David wrongly took her, slept with her, and impregnated her. Sadly, the baby was born and only lived a few days before dying.
Though Bathsheba endured much pain, including infant loss, God restored her story.
Eventually, King David married Bathsheba, and they conceived another son – Solomon.
Bathsheba enjoyed the blessing of seeing her son Solomon become the wisest and richest king the world has ever known.
God took Bathsheba’s struggles and turned them into good, as promised in Romans 8:28.
7. A Woman in Solomon’s TimeWhen Solomon was king, a dispute arose between two women as described in 1 Kings 3:16-28.
Both women had baby boys, but one baby had died in the night.
One of the women switched the babies in the middle of the night. Yet each woman claimed the living baby was her own.
To settle the dispute, Solomon boldly proposed to divide the living baby between the two women. However, the real mother cried out on behalf of the baby, and then Solomon knew she was the true mother and protected the baby’s life.
This woman received God’s abundant grace in a desperate time of need.
8. MaryAs a teenager, Mary was chosen to be the mother of Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah.
She had great faith when she said to the angel:
“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38, NIV)
Her willingness to face shame and criticism as a young mother is inspirational.
Her unwavering commitment to her Son, especially after watching Him suffer, was essential at the start of the early church, as noted in Acts 1:14.
Mary’s practice of pondering things in her heart likely helped Luke write his gospel, which has been a blessing to countless millions.
9. A Canaanite WomanA Canaanite woman had a child suffering from demon possession.
Canaanites had long been enemies of the Jews. But since she was desperate for her daughter to be healed, she cried out for Jesus’ help, risking rejection.
However, Jesus commended her great faith and granted her request, and her daughter was instantly healed as described in Matthew 15:21-28.
God cares when our children are sick and troubled, and He hears the heart cries of mothers pleading on their behalf.
10. EuniceTimothy was a young pastor under Paul’s teaching. Timothy’s mother Eunice was a Jewish believer, but his father was Greek, as told in Acts. 16:1. It’s possible that this difference of belief created friction in the family.
Timothy’s grandmother Lois was also a believer.
These two women passed on their beliefs to Timothy, whom Paul commended for his “sincere faith” (2 Tim. 1:5, NIV).
The intentional acts of Eunice and Lois to pass their faith on to Timothy were instrumental in helping the Gospel spread in the early church.
Their example can inspire mothers today to be faithful in passing on their Christian beliefs to their children, even if fathers don’t share in the belief.
Let’s look at these 10 mothers in the Bible who endured hard things and displayed strength in motherhood. #motherhood #strength #womenoffaith

We Are Easter People
We are Easter people is a favorite quote from my dear pastor friend, and I’m pondering it with you today.
We Are Easter PeopleToday I’m reflecting on a 46-day journey of blogging every day for Lent. After reflecting on so many quotes, I couldn’t pick a better quote than this one to celebrate Easter.
Pastor Mark Martin is now with the Lord. I can only imagine his joy today as he celebrates Easter in heaven. He was my pastor for many years, and he was also my friend.
Every Easter Sunday, Pastor Mark proclaimed this message with verve. He wanted us to live in the joy that is possible every day this side of the cross, when all the prophecies about Jesus have been fulfilled.
Because we are Easter people, we can live with joy, hope, and peace. We live with joy that Jesus died for our sins and took away the curse of death from us. He’s now preparing a place for us in heaven, as long as we personally and individually commit our lives to him. We can have peace knowing that though we have many troubles in this world, Jesus has overcome them for us and has much better things in store.
Today, I thank God for the friendship I had with Pastor Mark. More than anyone else, he taught me about small group ministry. He was the first to encourage me to write for the church and gave me unique writing opportunities. Pastor Mark counseled me, baptized my children, and attended my grandpa’s funeral. He and I laughed together and enjoyed good fellowship. I’m grateful for his constant encouragement.
Living as an Easter PersonToday, I commit to living as an Easter person, not just on Easter Sunday, but every day. This experience of blogging every day for over six weeks has renewed my joy and healed me. Surely Pastor Mark would be happy to know I’ve written every day and healed through the process. I can’t wait to catch up with him in heaven someday.
I hope you will live as an Easter person today too. May God renew your joy, hope, and peace today as you spend time in prayer and worship. I also encourage you to worship with others in church because community is essential. That’s where I met Pastor Mark who had such a powerful impact on my life. I pray you meet a supportive brother or sister in Christ in church as well.

As Grief Wells Up
As grief wells up is a part of a quote from my book Hope for the Hard Days, and I’m pondering it with you today.
For Lent 2025, I’ll be writing new blog posts every day. I’m writing for just five unedited minutes on a quote of the day to deepen our faith in this Lenten season.
Day 46 of Lent 2025 – April 19
I’m using my own books for quotes this final week of the Lenten season. This quote is from the chapter called The Second Round of Grief in Hope for the Hard Days.
Here is the quote in context:
The difference between the second round of grief and the first is that I have the advantage of seeing it coming…One thing I’m doing on this second round of grief is inviting Jesus into each moment with me. I envision him standing beside me back in that first round, when grief suddenly crashed into me like tsunami waves. He was right there, holding me when I felt his presence and especially when I didn’t feel his arms around me.The second time around, Jesus and I will be standing there together, watching the original scene. I’ll see him standing there with me the first time and feel him standing beside me the second time too. He’ll embrace me as grief wells up, and as it ebbs away.Though my knowledge of the situation the second time around increases my grief for a moment, he will be offering grace in heavenly abundance to me.This Easter weekend, you might be dealing with grief. Perhaps it’s another round of grief from something you lost before. I encourage you to spend some private time with the Lord, grieving what happened to you. I hope that what I’ve shared above about inviting Jesus into that moment with you will be helpful.
In Hope for the Hard Days, I often write about grief. It has been an enormous challenge for me to choose hope amid all the grief I’ve faced. However, with God’s help, that has been possible. That’s why I wrote the book – to encourage you to find even just a bit of hope for the hard days. If your hard day happens to fall on Easter this year, I pray my book will encourage you.
You can order bulk signed copies of my book for the cheapest price in my Etsy shop. It’s where you can get a signed copy from me. Check it out HERE, and don’t forget the discount codes below!

Down Went the Needle
Down went the needle is a part of a quote from my client Naomi Fata’s book Stitching Your Story Piece by Peace, and I’m pondering it with you today.
For Lent 2025, I’ll be writing new blog posts every day. I’m writing for just five unedited minutes on a quote of the day to deepen our faith in this Lenten season.
Day 45 of Lent 2025 – April 18
I am proud to have been the editor, interior formatter, and book launch manager for Naomi’s book, which made my list of favorite books of 2024 from over 100 reads. It’s a book with many metaphors about sewing. On this Good Friday, I’m featuring a portion of her book that’s ideal for today.
Here is the quote in context:
Good Friday was a quiet day in the sewing room. I decided this was an opportunity to clean the machines…As I dismantled the machines, taking off the throat plates, dusting and oiling as needed, I moved the handwheel to adjust the needle position.Down went the needle. The picture before my eyes – He was buried. As He went down into the ground from sight. Up came the needle. He is risen. As He rose a secure stitch formed. As we enter in, the death, burial and resurrection of Christ stitches us to the Father. This is the picture of His perfect love. I am stitched to Him, with a stitch that can’t be broken. As a novice sewist, this metaphor speaks deeply to me. It reminds me of the hope in this scripture:
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.Romans 8:11 NIVJesus’ perfect love displayed so powerfully on the cross binds us to him. Also, he gives us resurrection power through the Holy Spirit, who is the gift Jesus promised on the night he was betrayed (John 16:1-15).
I’m pondering these thoughts deeply on this Good Friday morning. I’ll be pondering them more when I attend church tonight and on Easter Sunday. May you join in fellowship with others in your local church this weekend, where you can find comfort and strength in community.
Get your copy of Naomi’s book HERE.

Venting upward is a part of a quote from my book The Fruitful Life, and I’m pondering it with you today.
For Lent 2025, I’ll be writing new blog posts every day. I’m writing for just five unedited minutes on a quote of the day to deepen our faith in this Lenten season.
Day 44 of Lent 2025 – April 17
I’m using my own books for quotes this final week of the Lenten season. This quote is from the Selfish or Kind chapter of The Fruitful Life.
Here is the quote in context:
What I’m doing differently now is venting solely to God. He can handle my raw honesty without being negatively influenced. By keeping my mouth shut toward others and opening it only in God’s presence, my faith is growing quickly. I’m learning what’s worth arguing about and what’s not. I’m learning that God sees the wrongs done to me, and He is my avenger. My trust in Him is getting stronger, since I’m venting upward instead of outward.I am not sure where I first learned the lesson about venting upward, but it’s been one of the most powerful tools of spiritual growth I’ve ever used. It broke my tendency to triangulate, as modeled in my toxic family dynamics. Venting upward first draws me closer to God because I cast all my cares on him first. Often, that is enough to take care of the problem.
Once I am finished venting upward, God will tell me if I need to speak to someone else. The Bible says there is wisdom in talking with many counselors (Prov. 15:22). So, only after I have spoken to God do I go to my Christian counselor, best friends, fellow Stephen Ministers, or other wise people for additional input. I start with God first, and this sets everything right.
If you aren’t in the practice of venting upward first, I highly recommend it. This practice tempers your spirit while drawing you closer to God. It’s a great way to grow spiritually in a short period of time, because you’ll notice how often you are turning to others as soon as you put this into practice.

Acceptance Is a Beautiful Way to Live
Acceptance is a beautiful way to live is a part of a quote from my book Newness of Life: Trusting God in Times of Transition, and I’m pondering it with you today.
For Lent 2025, I’ll be writing new blog posts every day. I’m writing for just five unedited minutes on a quote of the day to deepen our faith in this Lenten season.
Day 43 of Lent 2025 – April 16
I’m using my own books for quotes this final week of the Lenten season. This quote is from the Grieving and Dancing chapter of Newness of Life.
Here is the quote in context:
This is why God gives us a time to grieve. Healing and wholeness are on the side of acceptance. It took me years to arrive at the acceptance phase, particularly when I was grieving several live relationships which may never be truly satisfying. But acceptance is a beautiful way to live, and if grief was the price I had to pay, it was worth the cost. When I wrote this book in late 2016, I was grieving living deaths. Those relationships were live at the time, and they weren’t what I wanted them or needed them to be.
Now, all those relationships have died. In the past three years, I’ve gone through a massive grieving process for the losses. I cycled through the steps of denial, depression, bargaining, and anger many times, sometimes several times daily. These steps were essential for me to work toward acceptance, where I have recently arrived.
In my grieving process, I’ve learned to see grief in all new ways. I see it as a great gift from God, who knows our human hearts can only take so much. I’ve learned that it often takes much longer than I would like to grieve an enormous loss. In fact, I’ll likely be grieving some things the rest of my life, though in lower levels. The book As Long As You Need has truly helped me value grief for what it is.
Now, in the acceptance stage, I see that grief got me here. Acceptance isn’t possible without grief. It’s the process God uses to heal us and make us whole again. It also leads us to dancing in praise of our Father’s goodness, which I explore more in the chapter I hope you’ll read in the full book.

Spring Always Wrestles
Spring always wrestles is a part of a quote from my book Hidden Manna on a Country Road, and I’m pondering it with you today.
For Lent 2025, I’ll be writing new blog posts every day. I’m writing for just five unedited minutes on a quote of the day to deepen our faith in this Lenten season.
Day 42 of Lent 2025 – April 15
I’m using my own books for quotes this final week of the Lenten season. This quote is from the Birdsong chapter of my most favorite book that I’ve written.
Here is the quote in context:
Setting out for a walk in early spring, I still need my jackets and cold gear in the morning. But the reward for my time in layering is the cheery bird song in my woods and in the thickets and tree stands along the gravel road. Their songs, so innocent and happy, remind me to delight in the new life that is sprouting all around me.Spring always wrestles with winter to gain the upper hand. Cold, windy days vie for power against the warmer, sunny afternoons. Yet the bird song is consistent. Right at dawn, the timing of which aligns with the morning bus pickup, the birdsong volume increases moment by moment. They join in chorus with local roosters to welcome the sun’s rays no matter the March morning temperatures. The songs of the birds remind me to sing my own in heartfelt praise to God.This time of year, it’s hard not to wake up with a smile because the birds are singing so loudly. Though it’s often still dark and I’m sleep-deprived, the birdsong cheers my heart and reminds me that spring always wins the battle against winter.
Winter is always a battle for me because I suffer from seasonal affective disorder. This is a form of depression that happens between the time changes in fall and spring. The older I get, the harder the fight becomes. I must remind myself over and over that every single year I’ve ever lived, spring always arrives, and that’s a sure sign my depression will lift.
In my personal life right now, today’s quote is a good reminder to put my hope in God. For the past three years, and even before that, hope has wrestled with despair. There were many days when I thought despair would win. Certainly, for hours, days, and weeks at a time, despair had the upper hand. However, hope has been gaining ground in the fight each day of this Lenten season. I’m grateful to feel more hopeful as God heals me and gives me hard proof that hope is coming to life.
It’s good to be reminded of this in the book I wrote just months before my world shattered. God knew I’d need these words in this season, and I’m grateful to look back and gain hope from them today.
