Lord of the Liminal Space: Reviver

I’m in a liminal space in 2023 – that means it’s an in-between space arching over what was and what will be. As I recover from my divorce in 2022 and many other losses, I’m seeing this year as a liminal space, and I am acknowledging God as the Lord over it all.

This year, I’m starting something new: an unedited prayer poem every day, written in just five minutes. I’m writing it based on the names of God I find in my One Year Bible readings.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Reviver

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

you revived the hopes

long nursed

in Jacob’s heart.

The hope against hope

that his beloved son

was not maimed

but somehow escaped

a painful and shameful end.

 

Thirteen long years

he must have told himself

to give up

yet a tiny spark of hope

kept flickering

deep inside

out of his love

long nurtured

for Rachel

and expressed

so beautifully

in his firstborn son.

 

As the report came to him

shock first arrived

but the hope unfolded

moment by moment

as he heard the stories

and saw the gifts

as proof that hope

was still alive.

 

O Lord

in my liminal space

where hope flickers

in and out

like a flame overtaken

by harsh winds

may I look toward the day

when you will revive

my hope with hard proof

that you had been working

all along

when I couldn’t see it

crafting a beautiful

expression

of your love for me

behind the scenes.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Honor Giver

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

they called you

just a carpenter’s son

mocking your knowledge

and limiting your potential.

Instead of being inspired

by your powerful message

they were deeply offended

and stubbornly

refused to believe

rejecting you

though you stood

right in front of them.

 

You said then

a prophet is honored

everywhere except his hometown

and among his own family.

O how this truth resonates

with me in this liminal space

when my own family

has not only refused support

but turned on me

in vicious betrayal

gossip

and doubt

accusing

I must be at fault

though you call me

innocent.

 

You performed precious

few miracles

in your hometown

because the people

who truly loved you

and accepted you

lived elsewhere.

Though your family

came back around

in the end

during your public ministry

you surrounded yourself

with true friends.

 

May I receive honor

from you alone

as I minister with my words

though I have

no bloodline support.

May those outside my family

carry me through

with prayers and love.

O honor giver

bestow on me your grace

in the times

I feel like an orphan

and remind me

you once felt cut off

just like this

though you were greater

than they could have ever

imagined.

Butchering Day – a memory poem

Next week, my family farm will be auctioned off. It has been in my family for 100 years, but its 102 acres will soon be parceled out in three tracts.

I have known the death of the farm would come in my lifetime, but I didn’t know when it would happen. Now it is here.

The farm is only one mile north from my property. This is the place where six generations of my family have lived, ever since my great-great-grandparents migrated to southeast Missouri from Germany in the late-1800s. It is so very dear to me.

As I make space for grief in this season, I’m reflecting on the good memories about the farm, such as butchering day. Thankfully, my photographic memory and status as the oldest great-grandchild gives me many memories to savor.

Here is one of my favorites as told in my age three voice.

My Grandpa Byron passed away one year ago this weekend. I want to share this memoir poem and my painting of the family farm in his memory.

Today is a big day at the farm.
All of Daddy’s family is gathered for butchering.
The ladies stand around the table side by side
so close I can’t see.
Mommy lets me poke my head in
and I watch them shake salt and brown sugar
over fat pink hams.
I hear thick white paper crinkle
when they wrap the hams tight.
Great-Grandma’s sink is full of feathers
like a pillow burst open.
I squirm when I see chicken feet
sticking out over the edge.
But the pot on the stove smells wonderful—
we’ll have chicken and dumplings for dinner.
I follow Daddy and my uncles to the smokehouse
where they hang the hams.
The sun lights up spider webs
in the holes of the wooden walls.
I breathe in the crackling fire’s smoky scent.
Outside I tiptoe up to the circle of men
and Great-Grandpa sees me hiding behind Daddy’s legs.
When he asks me to come closer
his blue eyes smile behind thick glasses.
“Watch, little Sarah,” he tells me
as he holds a chicken very still
on the old tree stump.
Suddenly I hear a thud
and the chicken chases me
without a head!
Great-Grandpa chuckles loudly
as I run inside like a scared little mouse.
Great-Grandma gives me a snack
when I tug at her apron—
graham crackers and sweet homemade juice
with grapes inside the jar.
She brings out the box of old toys
that Grandpa played with as a boy.
I play Farm with the metal tractor and wagon
and I play Kitchen with silver dishes and marbles
and little spice tins she saves just for me.
Best of all I like the old picture book
and I snuggle on the flowered couch
to find the story of the fox and crow.
Later I wake up just enough
to feel Great-Grandma tucking me in
with one of her homemade quilts.
I smile inside when she kisses my hair.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Farmer

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

You are the farmer

planting good seeds

in my life.

Seeds worked into soil

that has been softened

by your tilling

and your rain.

Soil enriched

by the death

of so many things

last year.

 

But the enemy comes

at night

and tries to pluck

the good seeds

from my heart

stealing hope

peace

and joy

before they have had a chance

to take root.

He sows his weeds

of frustration

struggle

and doubt

to grow up

right alongside

the wheat

intended for a great harvest.

 

I am surprised

that you, my farmer

do not wipe

the whole field clean

and start over

without the blockades.

Instead

you allow

the weeds to grow up

side by side

among the wheat

you know

is sure to produce

a harvest of thirty

sixty

or one hundred

times more

and you promise

to bind up

and burn the weeds

when the time is right.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Brother

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Jesus

you called yourself

my brother

even when your own

blood relatives

were standing nearby.

 

You expanded the territory

of family

as you expanded so much

in your earthly ministry

surely thinking

of people like me

in quiet times

with your Father.

 

You could see

the splintering

and shattering

of family ties

last year

the betrayal

of those with whom

I had shared so much.

You could see

my orphan heart

cowering in this liminal space.

 

As you spoke to your disciples

I imagine you had me in mind

saying long before I was born:

I am your brother

the one watching over you

protecting you

walking with you.

I am the one

who goes before you

and will always

eat with you

at the family table.

I will be with you

every holiday

rejoicing and laughing

as we delight

in each other’s company.

Our bond is stronger

than blood

and will never break.

 

You said

anyone who does the will

of your Father in heaven

is your sister or brother or mother.

So today

renew in me a desire

to do the Father’s will

so I can rest

in the comfort

of your brotherly care.

Lord of the Liminal Space: Mystery Keeper

I’m in a liminal space in 2023 – that means it’s an in-between space arching over what was and what will be. As I recover from my divorce in 2022 and many other losses, I’m seeing this year as a liminal space, and I am acknowledging God as the Lord over it all.

This year, I’m starting something new: an unedited prayer poem every day, written in just five minutes. I’m writing it based on the names of God I find in my One Year Bible readings.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Mystery Keeper

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

you are the mystery keeper

of so many things

beyond our comprehension.

In this liminal space

I’m pondering

the mystery of why

you don’t stop

certain bad things

from happening.

 

Joseph encountered

a wandering man

who told him

his brothers were at Dothan.

In that location

his brothers sold him into slavery

and new suffering

entered Joseph’s life.

 

My question:

if that man had not existed

would Joseph’s suffering

have been mitigated

lessened

or eliminated?

Would you have used

another way

to fulfill your plan

for Joseph and all your people

without such excruciation?

 

In my own story

I’ve asked similar questions

over and over:

why didn’t he just leave

when he had first planned it

long before

the trailer next door

became available

for our purchase

before the evil woman

who wrecks marriages

sank her fangs into him

before they both

shacked up together

in our faces

when they could live

anywhere else in the county.

 

Why, God?

Why didn’t you stop it

when you most certainly

could have done so?

 

Surely Joseph pondered

these questions

in the darkness of his prison

while he was punished

for doing nothing wrong

rather

for doing what was right.

 

And I wonder

if after he ranted

complained

doubted

cried

and grieved

he landed in the same place

I land:

your ways are higher than my ways

and your thoughts

are far beyond

my tracing out.

 

O Mystery Keeper

I hope you are weaving

a better story

beyond my own emotional prison

just like you did

for Joseph

though he could not

make sense of his story

nor see the hopeful future

that awaited him

beyond his terrible suffering.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Necklace

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

you are the necklace

of common sense

and discernment

that lays on my chest

in this season.

 

When my emotions fly wild

and the desire for revenge

is a blazing flame

your security

rests on my collarbones

and I feel its gentle weight.

 

I finger the jewels

and lockets

of your necklace

when I fear sudden disaster

and worry

that my enemies

will never face consequences.

 

I study how evening light

deepens the beauty

of the multifaceted jewels

in my journey at dusk

when you promise

to keep my feet from stumbling

or being caught in a trap.

 

At night I run my fingertips

back and forth

along the familiar chain

and I lie down without fear

as you usher me

into peaceful sleep.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Wrestling Partner

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

You are my wrestling partner

from dark to dawn.

In this space between

intense past struggles

and the fear of what lies ahead

you meet me

hand to hand

face to face

breath to breath.

 

In the darkness

I twist and turn

with you so close.

My muscles strain

with why questions

no one can answer

but you.

Answers don’t arrive

but you stretch me

over and under myself

turning me round and round

even inside out

as we tussle.

 

Though your strength

infinitely exceeds mine

you whisper that you would rather

I win the match.

As dawn breaks

you cry out

asking me to let you go

from this constant fight.

 

I say in boldness

after so much struggle

“I will not let you go

until you bless me.”

Then you give me the blessing

of a new identity

far larger and stronger

than who I have been.

 

Though you wrench me out of socket

in the wrestling match

I call you my partner

as I limp forward

in the morning

remembering the light

finally dawned

right before

I saw your face

so close to mine.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Sparkle Giver

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

O Lord

I have lost my sparkle

in the past year

of so much darkness.

Ever present grief

caused me to ask questions

from depths

I’ve never traversed before:

 

How long will you forget me?

Forever?

How long must I struggle

with anguish in my soul

with sorrow in my heart

every day?

How long will my enemy

have the upper hand?

 

Like John sitting in prison

after only doing your will

with fervent devotion

I am surrounded by darkness

and I even dare to whisper

“Should I keep looking

for someone else?”

 

But you are gracious to me

because you are the original

sparkle giver

from a morning pond

in begonia leaves

in rocks on my country road

through the night sky.

 

Restore the sparkle to my eyes

as I put my trust

in your unfailing love

though so many others

didn’t love me

and rejoice

because you have rescued me

from decades of suffering

Bless me

because I have not

fallen away from you.

 

Today I will sing to you

with a joy sparkle

because you have been good to me

and you will continue

to be good to me

in this liminal space.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Sender

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible.

 

In this in-between space

you are gracious

to send me

out past my comfort zone

to serve others

so I don’t turn so far

inward all the time.

 

You send me

to do your kingdom work

every time I leave my home

even when I don’t feel

as if my actions matter.

You send me to announce

your kingdom is near

often not with evangelistic words

but with kind eye contact

warm smiles

and simple sayings

of personal encouragement.

 

You send me

to speak blessings

upon those I encounter

just as you speak blessings

over me.

As my sender

you give me the right words

to say at the right time

which are not my own

but the Spirit speaking

through me.

 

Here am I

send me

where you wish

away from my recursive pain

and out into the world

with so much suffering

in need of kindness

that when shared

wicks the sadness

from my heart

and replaces it

with satisfaction

of a good day’s work.
