Douglas Adams Tour: The Travel Epiphany

OUTTAKES CONTINUED: The Travel Epiphany is an outtake from my writing about my 2015 forty-two places Douglas Adams tour. I’m cutting a lot of 1st-person POV from the upcoming book, Forty-Two Places: Douglas Adams’s London. Cheers to a travel epiphany!Yvette In a Small Café in Rickmansworth

This is me, age 42. Zipped up in a jacket the color of the hot cocoa I’ve been sipping. I raise a tall café glass and salute the camera. I got significantly better at taking selfies after traveling alone. In the picture, I l...

Finnemore Fridays: Alchemy

I’m updating this blog post from 2017 because John Finnemore illustrated one of my favorite sketches (I think of it as Alchemy) and shared it on YouTube!

Who is John Finnemore, you may ask?

Oh, you know, he’s Neil Gaiman’s writing partner for Season 2 of Good Omens. (If you have to ask who Gaiman is, or what Good Omens is, you have a lot of good stuff ahead of you, you lucky devil!)

ORIGINAL POST:

We don’t talk about this kind of thing in our culture, but back in 2017...

Side Quests Continued: What Type of Traveler Are You?

St. Michaels from Marazion

I promised interior pictures from St. Michael’s Mount, and I have included a giant, gorgeous photo gallery of images below. But before we get to the beauty inherent in an ancient castle maintained by the St Aubyn family entrusted with a national (perhaps world) treasure of spiritual significance, I want to ask a jarring question: What Type of Traveler Are You?

Douglas Adams famously wrote about travel (and a million other things). His books cover hitchhikers, t...

Side Quests: St Michael’s Mount

St. Michael's MountSt. Michael’s Mount

Over breakfast the morning after my fall at The Lizard, Paul, another Keigwyn House Guest, asked me what I was planning to do that day. I’d checked off all my Adamsian sites the day before, so I had time for a side quest. Cornwall was full of awesome things and I assumed I’d pick something when I arrived…but now I had an injury.

“My vague plan was to do more hiking at the Lizard…but that doesn’t seem like a good idea now. I kind of wanted to see St. Michael’s Mount, b...

November 4 & 6 at 7:30 PM: Yvette in Personal Stories – Return to Live!

Yvette poses in front of 42 Noel Road, a literary tourism destination you can learn about in Personal Stories-Return to Live! on November 4 and 6th an Center Stage Theater.Literary Tourism at Number 42, Noel RoadWhat? Yvette is actually going to use that voice of hers where it makes sense!?

On November 4th and 6th I will be sharing personal stories on stage live at the Center Stage Theater. At a 7:30 PM show on Thursday and Saturday nights, I’ll be telling a tale about ‘Kate’s Corner of the Park,’ just one of the many moments that turned me into a Douglas Adams literary tourism addict.

It’s one story, but you have TWO OPPORTUNITIES, to hear me “out” m...

Douglas Adams Travel: Pretty, Pretty Penzance

Penzance Station SignPenzance Station Sign

“On this particular Thursday, something was moving quietly through the ionosphere many miles above the surface of the planet; several somethings in fact, several dozen huge yellow chunky slablike somethings, huge as office blocks, silent as birds…The huge yellow something went unnoticed at Goonhilly…”

HHGTTG

I was headed for Goonhilly Earth Station with my unrelenting companion: a head cold.
My huge yellow chunky something was the result of blowing my nose.
I s...

Douglas Adams Travel: A Lot of Left

In my opinion, if you’re an average American, driving in the UK is something best left to the experts. A car might be useful if you’re British, or careful, or both. But cars are tricky for non-Brits who only find them convenient if they can steer like Zaphod Beeblebrox, with the extra arm they recently had fitted. The lack of limb addition services available at Heathrow is a major reason why I’ve partnered with International Friends, a coach tour company, for my Douglas Adams Forty-Two Places ...

Douglas Adams Tour: Coach Tours

Continued from Douglas Adams Tour: The Nerd Big Three

I enjoy coach tours for difficult-to-reach Adams sites because driving on the left side of the road is not easy. Though most of the places in my book are accessible via train and a reasonable walk, Glastonbury Tor and Stonehenge are exceptions. They’re out in the country, but both can be visited via a coach trip from London.

OUTTAKES CONTINUED…This post is an outtake from my 2015 forty-two places Douglas Adams tour. I’m cutting a lot of 1st-person POV from the upcoming book, Forty-Two Places: A Douglas Adams Travel Guide. Mark & Yvette Selfie at The British Museum

“Mark, Since this will be your first trip to England, is there anything you want to see?”
“The Nerd Big Three: The Rosetta Stone, Big Ben, and Stonehenge.”

Uh Oh. Despite close reads, re-reads, and plain old wishing, no Douglas Adams...
