Distraction

This handmade paper postcard caught my eye in Formé Millinery, famous for serving up high-fashion hats for the Kentucky Derby.
Distraction, you are my favorite. It spoke to me. It followed me home and said, “Whoooo? Youuuuu? Wriiiiiite? Nooooo…make hats.”
So far, I haven’t listened. But I’ve given myself a mini-creativity retreat for the next few days. Even if I don’t work on any of my many hat projects, Wise Fedora Owl reminds me that yep, distraction is my favorite p...

Gunnersbury Park Campaign EXTENDED!
Last week I wrote about Gunnersbury Park’s Art Fund campaign. This week I have fantastic news: The deadline for “Set To Stun” has been extended!
Our community has until the 27th to chip in a bit each and fund a museum exhibit that will preserve the spirit of Science Fiction we love!
After I posted on my blog and social media, many fans sens me questions about the rewards and the campaign. I put those questions to the organizers on your behalf and I have answers for you!

‘Set to Stun’ at Gunnersbury Park Museum (Get Cool Swag)
Hey fellow froods! Have you seen this opportunity to support Gunnersbury Park Museum and get cool swag?
Given our interest in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (yes, American spelling), the Gunnersbury Park Museum thought their upcoming SF exhibition might be of interest to us.
They’re planning an exhibition in London, ‘Set to Stun’, a celebration of Sci-Fi film and television design from the 1960s through to today. They hope to turn the camera onto the West London creatives who brou...

Marketing for Authors
Today I have a big message (and a small story) about marketing for authors. I was recently in a self-publishing boot camp. The dreaded MARKETING part of publishing came up and even across a Zoom screen I felt a wave of despair from my fellow authors. We were all muted and I swear I heard a collective moan.

I know that gut-twisting groan. I’ve made it in the past. I’ve felt that way about work I was doing. So I took some time to try and understand why I felt that way and why “selling”...

Obrigados Pelos Peixes Author Q&A
The wonderful Adams fan site, Obrigado Pelos Peixes (Thanks for all The Fish), helmed by the fabulous May Santos, sent me a series of questions for an author Q&A about being a Douglas Adams fan and creating Douglas Adams’ London. You can read my answers in Portugese here, or in English below.

The answer to this question makes me a little sad because I managed to just miss meeting Douglas Adams in person during his ...

Bye, Olieo.

Today is the day. Olieo’s last day as a dog and my last day as a dog mom.
I’m writing about this because I can’t do anything else. I can’t think about anything else and I can’t feel any way other than sad, so I might as well get it out on the page.
Olieo’s kidney disease has been getting markedly worse. For several weeks he paces nightly. He looks for us, panting constantly and unable to settle. Even with pain medicat...

Happy Launch Day

As of today, the first thing I noticed when I went to check on my guide-baby (as opposed to book-baby) is that Amazon still thinks they are unofficial:

I have no idea and my publisher doesn’t work weekends.
I confirmed last week that the distributor in L.A. had them, and in fact, a box of my author copies was on my doorstep today! Hooray!
