Once in Her Life
Here are ten things I wrote about my hair life for the recent Backbone Storytelling event HAIR RAISING.
Backbone Storytelling is a live event where people drop their names in a hat to share personal stories. The events are themed around a part of the body.
The next event is 7 pm on Wednesday, November 16 in downtown Santa Barbara. Backbone is partnering with Wylde Works as a new venue. I hope to see you there and hear your story! The theme is Achilles’ Heel.
At least once in her lif...

The Chase

Chasing places
that move in my imagination
catch a plane
before they’re gone.
Chasing people
identities inside of me
who conceive a visit
before they’re gone.
Chasing time
like my old dog runs
wobbly enthusiasm
inconsistent, then gone.
PS: Olieo is fine. Just 15 years old and wobbly this evening.
Happy Samhain to all who celebrate!

Bye, Heathrow!
About my Heathrow excision from Douglas Adams’ London, A Map by Herb Lester Associates

Writing is a solitary practice and I am not, by nature, a solitary person.
(I’ll pause to give those of you who’ve actually met me a moment to finish laughing at the scale of that understatement.)
I crave external validation. I want reassurance from someone I trust. I hope for positive feedback while simultaneously reminding myself it affects me like a heroin rush. Totally addictiv...

Poppy Led Me To Pontoon:
A Review of The Casual Dining Arm of Studio Kitchen, Purveyors of Caravel, first published in Mostly Harmless, ISSUE 165 – October 2022 from www.zz9.org
The ContextI was walking the Hackney section of the Regent’s Canal, doing a bit of research for my book, when signs on a set of black iron access stairs, and another posted on Rosie the canal boat, announced: Studio Kitchen, This Way!

MY BRAIN: Studio Kitchen? WAI...

Peeking Out and Friend-Finding

The topic of peeking out and friend-finding has come around again this summer, just in time for the International Day of Friendship. Starting and stopping essays is a bad habit. It means this blog post was written around my birthday, sat in the drafts folder for months, and is finally finished (to the extent that I can ever be truly finished writing about a topic I’m obsessed wi...

Big Things Start Small
My friend Steve in the UK is embarking on a podcast journey called Save Us, Jeff Bezos! His goal is to get to the bottom of the secret Voyager 3 project. The first episode, Big Things Start Small, is filled with quirky commentary and great music. You may recognize “Kate,” who will be featured in upcoming episodes.

Steve is a clinical psychologist and improviser attending classes at the Free Association. We connected online after I studied Level 2 at the ...

Total Opulence Overwhelm
One of the walks in my book explores Knightsbridge: ground zero for the reality of total opulence overwhelm. It traces the destructive path of a spaceship with a giant silver robot in it crashing and destroying this area of London.

Adams’ book So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish (So Long) calls out and crushes many opulent places: The Park Tower Hotel (previously a Sheraton). Harvey Nichols. Harrods. Three places devoted to sucking as many pieces of small gr...

Yvette’s Eastercon 2022 Part 2: Achievements Unlocked!
Part 1: Safe Today had cute pictures of me and pictures of critters as I set out for my first Eastercon. Part Two is about achievements unlocked, including getting home with only a single whasset.

If I was supposed to contact you about something, I hope you’ll reach out to me.
Now that I think of it, I did manage to lose another business card, for a nice man who attends a LOT of conventions. I met him at the post-con Fandom First Thursday Drinks. Hopefully, when I have a few ...

Submission
“A+! Though I’ve never read a single literary guide before, and will probably never will again [not counting this one if I ever make it back to England], of all the tour guides I’ve read, nothing has come close you the hoopyness that is yours!”
Beta Reader
The end of the “first draft” is nigh.
This sort of comment from my Beta Readers is what is keeping me going…and going…in the wee hours of the early morning.

Yvette’s Eastercon 2022 Part 1: Safe Today

Another day, another COVID test. I’m safe today. Each swab is an exercise in staying in the moment, not dwelling on the possibility of upset plans, time and energy ‘wasted’ (that’s my mom’s voice in my head), and hardcore FOMO if it turns out I can’t do all the things I want to do while I’m here.
But WHEW! I’m safe today.
I’m not a danger to anyone…today.
I wanted to be extra careful because a friend of mine that I spent Monday with has tested positive. She’s def...
