Douglas Adams on 2020

Here it is, the final month of 2020!

For kicks, as we kick this year into the garbage can, enjoy this 1999 Douglas Adams interview where, at the 3:26 mark, he answers a question specifically about 2020:

“Imagine that the technology has ceased to be stupid and has become really effective, and you’re still writing…in about 2020. What might this new medium be like?”

Robyn Williams, Presenter for ABC Science

What do you think? Was he right? Have our machines disappeared?

Small Town Charm (or how my Mohs surgery went)

Surgery took about an hour; two hours total from drop off to pick up.

Dr. Mark Burnett was good humored and pleasant first thing in the morning. I also found out as the procedure progressed that he’s a Royal, class of ‘99, which I promised not to hold against him as a Don, class of ‘91. It was comforting to know a fellow local was in charge.

The procedure started with a familiar knock pattern on the door: shave-and-a-haircut

“Two bits..!” I sung out.

“Two bits—what’s ...

The “C” Word

TL;DR: Mohs Surgery Friday, my friends are wonderful, wear wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen of 30 SPF or better, with Zinc being the active ingredient in it.

Friday I’m having a basal cell carcinoma removed from my left temple in a Mohs Surgery procedure. Prognosis is good for removal of all the cancer cells. 99% of cancers removed via this procedure do not reoccur.

Thank you to everyone who has contacted me to say “I’ve had that,” “It’s no big deal,” and “You’ll be fine.” Vanity is a har...

When You Believe

It is easy to share (sell) your stuff when you believe it is… Great? Worthy? The best thing you could make at the time, with the knowledge and skills you had.

The Poison in the Pudding The Poison in the Pudding

Perfectionism and imposter syndrome are the enemies of creating, which means they are the enemies of learning, which means they are the enemies of getting better and making better stuff.

Each thing I’ve created (and what YOU have created too; Yes, I’m looking at YOU) has merit. Because we pour time and ...

Anger is a Map

…anger is a map…Anger shows us where we want to go.

Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way

I’m thankful that there have been very few identifiable hours or days in my life when my mood swings felt like being hit full-force in the face by a spiked volleyball.

Because it’s not pleasant.

Swinging from Hope to Despair to Anger to Grief to Betrayal to Hatred to Love to Hate to Shame to Joy is absolutely exhausting.

And getting new glasses is a chore.

This is why I don’t play volleyball,...

How Big Will The Hole In My Face Be?

That’s the question you’re asking inside your head when your dermatologist, the one you just met for the first time, finishes biopsy-ing the weird thing on the side of your face.

But you don’t ask.
Because you know he doesn’t know.

It is Tiara Tuesday and I have a bandage to show for my bravery in facing the spectre of inevitable death.

Image Tiara TuesdayBiopsy+Tiara Tuesday!

In a week or so, I’ll have the results of my first ever biopsy, and (according to the doctor) I’ll probably be scheduled for...

Just Call Me Frank

TL;DR: Navel-gazing post inspired by journaling and a podcast. I explore my general relationship strategy and discuss compassion, judgment, control, and leadership.

I’m still working through The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I finished Week 9: Recovering a Sense of Compassion. Compassion is a word that I believed I knew the meaning of, but I looked it up anyway.

From the Latin root, compati, meaning ‘suffer with.’ “Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of ...

Joke a Day: July 1

Just to set expectations, I don’t think this will happen every day, but some days are better than no days.

PS: I don’t golf.

Summer Reads: A- Grade for City of Girls

I finished “That Damn Book.”

City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert is in the category of That Damn Book because I feel hungover today. That Damn Book is a label reserved for Those Damn Books that make me hate myself the day after I read them.

Unlike young Vivian, the main character in City of Girls, nine hours of sleep, a “good morning” smile for my husband, and a generous helping of spirited enthusiasm are my preferred way to tackle a busy day.

That Damn Book has robbed me...
