another new poem
the last hit
i was in the cramped and grimy
laundry room in my house
cleaning the lint trap and smoking weed
i didn’t want the neighbor lady to see me
so i crouched on the floor to take a hit
when i stood up everything turned silver-blue
and the next thing i knew
i was on my back
confused
as to how i got there
and then
my arms were waving uncontrollably
in front of me like the twitching feelers of some dying insect
and a weird mewling sound was coming from my throat.
i thought: this is it. i am having a stroke. i am dying.
and i realized how absurd and squalid it would be
to be discovered cold and stiff on the floor of
the cramped and dirty laundry room
with one hand full of dryer lint
and the other clutching a weed pipe
and i thought: perfect
this is exactly how
you deserve
to be found

BABYLAND
my 2nd job
age 17
was working as a groundskeeper
at the local cemetery
and babyland
was a place to break your heart
i still recall
the time
i sat with my back
against the maintenance shed
eating
my lunch
and a car pulled up to babyland
and I watched my neighbor put fresh flowers
on her child's grave
and then drive away
and I thought:
babyland is a place that
shouldn't exist

musings of a slacker messiah
"If i could just get the people who like my poetry books to read my chupacabra books and the people who like my chupacabra books to read my poetry books, then maybe..."

new poem
one for the cat
out of my house en route to the car
saw neighbor kids on roof of house next door
smirking freckled face tossed a baseball
off the roof trying to hit a cat crouched below
i saw red and bellowed, “Leave that cat alone!”
one of the teens sneered, “It’s my cat.”
as if that made one damn bit of difference
and i snarled, “I don’t care whose cat it is!”
then i challenged them to come down
so we could discuss it further
they opted to stay on the roof
as if to provide sufficient proof
of the cowards they were
i cannot abide cruelty to animals
and i wanna go berserk like Billy Jack
when i encounter the kind of bored sadism
i saw being practiced by these punks
dull and uncreative, their imaginations only
sparked to life by maliciousness,
they reminded me of shitheads i knew in prison,
covering the earth like a plague
a part of me wishes i’d dragged them down
and beaten their asses
but when i relate this story
people tell me i overreacted

something for the poetry fans
my imagination
i don’t try to ride coattails
or search for endorsements from famous people
but one time i did give a copy of Stone Hotel
to a rock star for whom i have enormous respect
i was hoping maybe that he’d read it and be so blown away
he’d mention it on Twitter or something
and help me get some (much-needed) exposure
and sell some fucking books
it was a mistake
the next time i saw him
he said, “i read your book…there’s a lot of darkness in there.”
and while he was polite and friendly
he was also a bit wary, i think, or maybe it was
just my imagination
in any case
he never mentioned Stone Hotel on Twitter
or anywhere else
but i want to make it clear
this does not change my opinion of him in any way
i still think he’s truly one of the greats
of this or any other age
and the last time i saw him
he gave me a hug
so maybe it was my imagination, after all
