SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2019 Finals: RECAP + TOP 10 EVENING GOWNS!

Best in Gowns--Miss Universe 2019 Finalists in their Evening Gowns (L to R) Miss Universe Colombia Gabriela Tafur,  Miss Universe Thailand Paweensouda Drouin,  Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi,  Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson, and Miss Universe

France Maeva Coucke--Miss Universe 2019 Finals, Atlanta Georgia

Universal Beauty--Zozibinin Tunzi, Miss Universe South Africa is crowned Miss Universe 2019 by outgoing Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray--Miss Universe 2019 Finals, Atlanta Georgia

Last night was the Finals of the 68th Annual Miss Universe contest, held at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta Georgia. 90 contestants from all over the world competed and the eventual winner was the stunning Zozibini Tunzi , Miss Universe South Africa.

Zozinini Tunzi, Miss Universe South Africa and new Miss Universe

A front-runner and a favorite from the start, 26-year-old, Zozibini bested the 89 other contestants with her elegance, stature, and intelligent answers. Tunzi has a Bachelor's Degree in public relations from the Cape Pennisula Institute of Technology. Prior to winning her country's title, she was studying to get her Master's in public relations as well. She is the third woman from South Africa to win the Miss Universe title and in case you might be wondering the social media power of becoming Miss Universe...Zozibini's Instagram following jumped to 1.4 MILLION as of last night!

Her National Costume--Zozibini Tunzi "Miss Universe South Africa"--Entitled "Waves of Love", this Lloyd Kandlin-designed costume incorporates love letters from South African males to women, as part of Zozibini's support of the #HeForShe campaign.

Speaking of National Costumes...The 2019 Miss Universe Best National Costume Award went to:

Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados--Designed by Cary Santiago, this stunning silver costume depicts the Philippine Eagle, the national bird of the country. It features laser-cut fabric in feather motifs in a fit-to-flare gown, with back wings, two eagles sitting atop her arms and an outstanding headdress. It is a work of Haute Couture Costume Art!

Now, it's time to get to the EVENING GOWNS! Let's discuss the Top Ten Semi-Finalists Gowns from the No. 1 to No. 10 favorites...Every gown was beaded so in terms of Trends, there was that, and speaking of trends: "Nude Gowns" are still as HOT as ever...

Let's begin with the Winner of Miss Universe 2019, South Africa's Zozibini Tunzi:

1. Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi--The eventual winner of this year's Miss Universe wore this shimmering gown for last night's Evening Gown Competition. The design featured a gold and silver sequined pattern that ended in a "sea" of turquoise toward the hem. The bodice was nude but covered in the appropriate places with coral-like sequin design. In addition, it featured beautifully cowl-draped sequins in long strands framing the top. It was impacting, sexy and fit her perfectly. If there was any critique, I had a couple: The shoulder pads that I could see through the sequins, and  THOSE SHOES; they were distracting and too clunky for that type of gown. I gave it my Top Gown placement even with those bad shoes (I just pretended they were gold non-platform strappy heels).

The dress was by Biji-La Maison de Couture, the same designer/brand that made MY FAVORITE GOWN from the Preliminaries:

White Caped Goddess--Miss Universe South Africa Zozibinin Tunzi, during the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries

2. Miss Universe Colombia Gabriela Tafur--My second favorite gown of the night was this gold sequined dress worn by Miss Universe Colombia. This is the same dress she wore for the Preliminaries and was designed by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza and I was a fan of it then . The dress was THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of a well-made sequined dress. Full Stop. Many contestants tried to wear something on this variation, lots falling a bit short of in showing elegance, red carpet fabulousness or looking rich. This right here covered all those bases, and it fit her to a T.

3. Miss Universe Thailand Fahsai Paweensuda Drouin--At first glance when Paweensuda came out, I was like "Oh No She Didn't!" and "Is that a SEQUINED LEG?!" At first, I was a bit confused with my emotions and thoughts on the gown but now, a day after, I really liked it! Designed by SURFACE Adhit Dhirakittiwat,  the dress (with one sequined leg), was very stage impacting and certainly stood out among the other nine. It was original in its design and featured gorgeous and very elaborate silver crystal beadwork framing the bodice. One could argue that it was two minutes away from being a costume--for a very High Fashion Moulin Rouge perhaps--but on the Miss Universe stage where you get just ONE CHANCE, Paweensuda went for it, and to me, it paid off.

4. Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson--Wearing the gold gown by designer Luis Antonio, Miss Universe Puerto Rico sauntered into the Top 5, then the Top Three and eventually, became the 1st Runner-up. She looked like a movie star walking onstage to announce the Best Actor Nominees for the Oscars. I loved the mirrored sequins covering her body, the shape of the dress was perfect and the gold went great with her golden hair.

5. Miss Universe France Maeva Coucke--This was one of my favorite gowns from the Miss Universe 2019 preliminaries and I was happy to see Miss Universe France didn't change for the Finals. The ivory sequin-and-feathers dress was from Lebanese couturier Ziad Nakad and looked as exquisite and expensive as most of those Lebanese designer's gowns (from Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, etc.). I loved the placements of the sequins and feathers at the bottom half and sleeves and in addition, the nude/blush coloring was perfect for Maeva's porcelain skin color and auburn hair. She looked like an actress at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet: Tres Chic.

6. Miss Universe Indonesia Frederika Alexis Cull--Indonesia's Frederika Cull wore another one of those golden/nude sequined gowns very popular with pageant and red carpet ladies. This gown was designed by Tex Saverio, the same designer who made her Preliminaries gown. The dress is beautifully made, as it has become custom from many of these Indonesian designers, featuring heavily beaded designs, simulating diamond necklaces draped all over her sinuous body. Under this see-through sequined netting, she wore a nude-colored strapless corsetted bodysuit, like a very Haute Spanx. She looked sexy and glamorous. I was also extremely happy that she wore the RIGHT SHOES! (Take note ladies--THESE are the gold strappy heels I am always talking about).

7. Miss Universe Mexico Sofia Aragon--For the Miss Universe 2019 Finals, Sofia went red. This red sequined gown was designed by Fher Santos , the same designer who made her white preliminaries gown seen HERE. This column-shaped dress fit her to perfection with hidden inner corsetry and was completely covered in crystals. The design had a detachable red organza overskirt, which she removed as part of her catwalk. The color and shape were just right for Sofia.

8. Miss Universe Peru Kelin Rivera--Kelin is at my 8 out of 10 spot in this dress designed by Peruvian Designer Maritza Mendoza Studio. The dress featured a nude (of course!) colored satin dress with peek-a-boo see-through netting at the side, curving up to the front of her torso. The heavy crystal beading covered the entire gown in a rich scroll-like pattern. This was a perfectly nice gown that fit her well and made her look Pageant perfect on stage.

9. Miss USA Cheslie Kryst--Miss USA Cheslie Kryst also chose a gold gown for the Finals of Miss Universe 2019 (I was beginning to think they all actually got a directive TO ALL WEAR GOLD!!!). This particular dress was from Sherri Hill and featured a high side slit, nude base with gold mirrored sequins that looked like broken glass. I thought the one-shoulder dress fit her nice (showing off Cheslie's incredibly toned body) and I also loved how the "broken glass" mirrored sequins were placed throughout the dress and how they radiated from the side waist, doing a fab "cinched-in" illusion...but compared to Miss Puerto Rico this dress looked a bit "off the rack" compared to Madison's Haute Gown.

Lastly...

10. Miss Universe Iceland Birta Abiba Porhallsdottir--The oh-so-lovely 20-year-old Birta captured the hearts of the universe last night during the Miss Universe 2019 pageant. With making it into the Top 10, she achieved the highest placement for her country since...1962! She wore this golden gown from Sherri Hill. The strapless dress had a gold beaded bodice and full ball-gown style skirt with gold appliques over ivory crinoline fabric. The style was sweet and worked for the 5' 10" tall beauty. While it was a bit "Miss Teen"-like, I'm glad she went a bit "edgy" by not lining it and giving a semi-view to her legs underneath.

So...a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the new Miss Universe, South Africa's Zozibini Tunzi!!!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries: My TOP 15 EVENING GOWNS!

Gown Fab--Miss Universe 2019 contestants during the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries Evening Gown Competition (L to R) Miss Universe Singapore, Miss Universe Philippines, Miss Universe South Africa, Miss Universe Indonesia, Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson--Miss Universe 2019 Preliminary Competition, Atlanta Georgia

TONIGHT is the Finals of Miss Universe 2019...but on Friday, the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminary Competition took place and part of this was the Evening Gown Competition. 90 contestants from all over the world showed off their best Evening Gown looks. To be honest, it was a bit of a tackylicious mess (as a whole) with lots of bright colored cheap-looking sequined dresses or lots of silver and gold slit-up-to-the-cha-cha looks that were a bit off-the-rack-looking. I was disappointed. I almost felt as if we had gone backward--evening gown-wise--and were in the late 80's/early 90's Beauty Pageant time. But...within all those questionable taste level dresses, there were some standouts.

More Gown Pretty--Miss Universe 2019 contestants (L to R) Miss Universe Malaysia Shweta Sekhon, Miss Universe Japan Ako Kamo, Miss Universe France Maeva Coucke, Miss Universe Croatia Mia Rkman, Miss Universe Honduras Rosemary Arauz--Miss Universe 2019 Preliminary Competition, Atlanta Georgia

Here are my TOP 15 BEST GOWNS of the 2019 Miss Universe Preliminary Competition:

1. Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi--STUNNING. A breath of fresh gown air, after so many too-heavily-beaded cheap polyester-looking tacky neon-colored gowns. When Zozibini came out in this white gown with matching cape, it was like a Gwyneth Paltrow-Tom Ford moment at the Oscars. She looked elegant, divine, elegant, regal-like. And to top it all off, the cape (whose outer layer is white velvet) featured a gorgeous sequined black-and-white printed Xhosa-inspired patterning motif that just about made me swoon. This was Gown Perfection, custom-designed by South Africa's Biji-La Maison de Couture .

2. Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados--At No. 2 is this golden gown inspired by the Philippine Eagle designed by Filipino Designer Cary Santiago . This was the same inspiration for her National Costume, which was also designed by Santiago. The gown featured a fabric manipulated textured design, a fit-and-flare strapless silhouette with bird-and-wing-like details at the bust, and pleated lower half, creating a dramatic bottom skirt effect. This was one of the rare Miss Universe Preliminary Gowns that stood out for uniqueness and Haute Couture-like drama--and more importantly, didn't look cheap and tacky. For eagle-eyed pageant fans, they recognized that this was a gold version of what Gazini wore when she competed for Binibining Pilipinas, Miss Universe Philippines back in June:

Gazini Ganados during the Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2019 pageant, wearing a pink Cary Santiago gown

3. Miss Universe France Maeva Coucke--This was my No. 3 favorite gown of the night, worn by Miss Universe France. The white see-through gown was striking, chic and was on another level of all the other see-through sequined dresses seen on display. It was designed by Lebanese Designer Ziad Nakad and featured hand-beaded jeweled sequins, feathers, and dangling paillettes. It fit beautifully and was very Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week!

4. Miss Universe Croatia Mia Rkman--One of the rare black gowns at the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries (in a sea of pink, blue, silver, gold)  this one worn by Miss Universe Croatia was a standout for sure. The gown featured a see-through netting base with heavy black sequined applique and multilayered tiers of organza creating a fabulously structured, dramatic shape. While her exaggerated hair bun was a bit TOO MUCHEEY, it didn't affect my gown critique.

5. Miss Universe Colombia Gabriela Tafur--Looking sublime, gorgeous in this silver sequined gown, Miss Universe Colombia was GOWN PERFECTION. This was a simple design that did the job of having stage presence, making her look elegant and modern. I recognized the Alfredo Barraza design since the Colombian designer is known for these styles of dresses; he does them VERY WELL! Once again, in a sea of off-the-rack polyester sequined dresses, this one stood out for looking expensive, well done and on another level.

6. Miss Universe Honduras Rosemary Arauz--In a gown by designer Lucia Rodriguez , Miss Universe Honduras made a strong impression on stage during the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries. The dress featured vertical silver sequined details laid on top of the silver iridescent fabric. The column gown fit her perfectly and included a dramatic (but not too dramatic) matching cape. Her slicked-back hair, clean makeup, and earrings added an air of regalness and were the right finishing touches. Whoever her "Glam Squad" team was, they did an excellent job overall!

7. Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson--This contestant is in it to WIN IT! When Madison came out SLITHERING in this gold sequined gown, she might as well have ended the Evening Gown competition right then and there. I thought the gown, which was designed by Luis Antonio , was PERFECTION! The way the gold mirrored sequins were placed on the gown, as well as the UBER SEXY column shape, reminded me of the "Good Ol' Days" of the Miss Venezuela Pageant Alta Moda evening gown shows. Muy Bien Madison & Luis!

8. Miss Universe Malaysia Shweta Sekhon--Shweta wore this blush colored gown designed by Carven Ong and it was quite a stunner. The strapless design featured a blush-colored netting base with gold and silver jeweled appliques and had a side front slit and side-hip panels. It was a directional style for an evening gown, making it look more "High Fashion Runway" than "Beauty Pageant", which I liked. I wasn't a fan of the shoes or jewelry but other than that, I really liked the gown.

9. Miss Indonesia Frederika Alexis Cull--One word: Wow. Frederika took my breath away in this one-shoulder red and black sequined gown from Indonesian designer Tex Saverio . The design was inspired by the "Spirit of the Phoenix" and fire and featured a side-front slit as well as a shoulder "fall" drape. She looked Cher-like and ready to present an Academy Award...or get one herself!

10. Miss Universe Singapore Mohana Prabha--DRAMAAAAA!!!! Miss Universe Singapore is definitely one of the Top Fashionistas of the 90 contestants, always bringing the FASHIOUUUUN!!! Here, for the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminary Evening Gown Competition, she slayed in this white sequined gown from Michael Cinco . The gown was part of a special collection done for the Ballet Philippines Gala (lower photo above) and featured a fitted column gown with dramatic "Elizabethan" kimono-like sleeves. She looked like a walking Couture Snowflake.

11. Miss Universe Japan Ako Kamo--Miss Universe Japan looked fabulous in this red fit-and-flare gown featuring black sequined applique and dramatic shoulder feathers. I loved all the details up top which framed her torso beautifully, especially with her hairstyle and makeup. She looked like a Bond Girl in the next James Bond film!

12. Miss Universe Mexico Sofia Aragon--Designed by Mexican Designer Fher Santos , this was another gown featuring dramatic sleeves. I thought she looked quite gorgeous in this white sequined design, giving absolute drama and queen-like presence on the stage. The dress was made to perfection, as I appreciated the finished hem lining (which you see at the lower middle part of this photo).

13. Miss Universe Bangladesh Shirin Akter Shela--I have to admit that Shirin is one of my top favorites of the 90 contestants and I was happy to see that she did not disappoint when it came to her evening gown choice for the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries. She looked elegant, sweet and modern in this off-the-shoulder nude-like gown with gold sequined swirls. The dress featured a nude-colored back cape to add a little bit of drama. I liked the styling--her hair, makeup, and great shoes. Well done Shirin!

14. Miss Universe Bahamas Tarea Sturrup--I actually liked this barely-there dress worn by Miss Universe Bahamas Tarea Sturrup. It was fun, super-sexy and made me notice her! The design featured a nude tulle base with flower-like sequin appliques covering her upper torso and then loosely sewn (or glued, perhaps) at her lower half. She looked very Cher (is this a Theme in Evening Gowns??!!). One complaint: Those shoes. No.

Lastly...

15. Miss Universe Vietnam Hoang Thuy--Speaking of SUPER SEXY and barely-there dresses...Miss Universe Vietnam gets my "This Gal Has Got Nerve!" and "THE BODY" to pull this off! In a gown by Vietnamese Designer Nguyen Cong Tri , Hoang slithered her way down the runway stage in this white chiffon design with nude tulle one-sleeved top featuring flower-like sequined appliques. This might as well have been an "Evening Swimsuit" since like 90% of her body was showing. I loved it! Especially for the fact that she was OWNING that stage and had a look of "What are Y'all Looking At?" You are looking at THE BODY of this year's Miss Universe, darlings! J Lo, you might want to get in touch with this designer ASAP!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2019 National Costumes: My TOP 20 List!

INCREDIBLE COSTUMES--National Costumes from Miss Universe 2019 contestants (L to R) Miss Universe Costa Rica Paola Chacon, Miss Universe Laos Vichitta Phonevilay, Miss Universe India Vartika Singh, Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados, and Miss Universe Brazil Julia Horta--Miss Universe 2019 National Costume Presentation Show, Atlanta Georgia

This Sunday is the Finals for the 68th Miss Universe competition. In advance of the Finals, this past Friday night was the National Costume Presentation Show during the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminary Competition. The 90 contestants vying for the crown showed off some of the most ORIGINAL, STUNNING and SUPER CREATIVE COSTUMES I have seen in a long time! Kudos to the creative teams, designers, workers, sewers, painters, hand-beaders...who made these costumes a reality.

Watching one after another work of Costume Art was a thrill for someone like me. I only wish that they had a much bigger, dramatic stage to showcase all of them; a hotel ballroom in Atlanta just didn't give it the duly deserved platform, such a shame. But on a good note: It was DEFINITELY the highlight of watching last night's Preliminaries (besides all those unfortunate slips and falls during the Swimsuit competition ). Without further ado, here is my TOP 20 LIST of Miss Universe 2019 National Costumes:

1. Miss Universe LAOS Vichitta Phonevilay--Laos' National Costume takes MY NUMBER ONE spot in this out-of-this-world incredibly original costume depicting a regal Elephant, the national animal of Laos. The elephant represents prosperity and a symbol of strength for the Southeast Asian nation. Her national costume is a MAJOR presentation...

Elephant Queen--Miss Universe Laos National Costume, Miss Universe 2019 National Costume Presentation Show, Atlanta Georgia

First, Vichitta saunters onto the stage INSIDE the elephant contraption, then...opens the front, revealing herself, in a traditional Laotian pink silk embroidered dress doing a traditional bow. But kids, it's not over...she then moves to the side, whereby gets back into the elephant and opens its side, revealing a "Stop Fire. Save Amazon" sign with a lighted sequined backdrop (showing the burning Amazon). Needless to say, she received a standing ovation. No idea how she got that thing through A) Customs and B) In her Luggage but BRAVO!!!! She dropped the National Costume Mic!

2. Miss Universe PHILIPPINES Gazini Ganados--Gazini's costume is in my No. 2 spot for being so outstanding, so Haute Couture fabulous and incredibly stage impacting. Her silver design was inspired by the national bird, the Philippine Eagle. The amazing costume was designed by Filipino designer Cary Santiago , who also designed her gown. It featured hand-stitched silver fabric with laser-cut patterns. Her headdress paid homage to the eagle's feathered wings and in addition, the look had two divine silver eagles sitting on her arms. This was something out of a vintage Alexander McQueen show...or Met Gala red carpet. Another Bravo!

3. Miss Universe BRAZIL Julia Horta--Julia's national costume involved FUTBOL (soccer), naturally, the nation's favorite sport. But in addition, she was also representing Brazil's most famous female soccer player who goes by one name: Marta. The costume seemed simple enough: Julia came out with a soccer ball, knocking it around with her knees, finally tossing it out into the audience, then she made her way onto the front of the stage, revealing not just her bedazzled futbol uniform with exaggerated golden wings covering the entire stage...but then out of her shoulders came a white square-shaped fabric, which she unrolled, revealing (yes, another reveal!) a VERY BOLD "STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN" sign with blood-like painting. NO ONE in that audience expected this and I BOW DOWN to her for doing it! From a fun soccer look to END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: Yes Maam!

4. Miss Universe PUERTO RICO Madison Anderson--Madison stole the National Costume Show (besides Laos & Brazil!) when she came on stage with this INCREDIBLE costume depicting the National Symbol of Puerto Rico: The Flor de Maga, or Hibiscus. The costume was designed by Joshuan Aponte and also features the Golden Coqui, a small rare frog, native to the island. In case you are wondering where that golden frog is, look nowhere else but her torso chest plate! It's a stunning depiction of flora & fauna with outstanding stage appeal.

5. Miss Universe MALAYSIA Shweta Sekhon--Shweta's very original National Costume represents Peranakan Culture. Entitled "A Peranakhan indulgence", the heavily beaded costume comes with trays of traditional Malay sweets and delicacies--it's like she's the Malay Queen serving dessert! The costume was designed by Carven Ong and took 3 months to make and weighs over 60 pounds!

6. Miss Universe COSTA RICA Paola Chacon--Depicting the colorful Carreta Tipica (traditional cart) seen in Costa Rica, Paola also honored the artisanal work of Sarchi, Costa Rica. Her costume shows the multicolored prints shown in the carretas and the entire back of the gown is supposed to be one of those wheels seen in the carts.

7. Miss Universe HONDURAS Rosemary Arauz--Rosemary's costume is a "Tribute to Corn", a staple of food for her country. The costume was designed by Alonso Maximo and features a very high fashion-styled skirt in corn husks displayed in a high-low designed gown. The feathered headdress showcases a look of a Pre-Columbian Emperor. The five circles in the headdress simulate the five stars in the Honduran flag.

8. Miss Universe THAILAND Paweensouda "Fahsai" Drouin--Miss Universe Thailand's National Costume involved a stage presentation similar to some others in that she first came out--hidden under a huge mask. As she got to the end of the stage, she appeared in a short mini-dress in copper-clad aluminum wire arranged in a distinctly Thai pattern. The costume which was designed by Alongkorn Kongin was inspired by the "Ghost Festival". The over six-foot-tall mask...

Was made of recycled materials including plastic bags and...take-out food plastic forks (right photo above)

9. Miss Universe BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Bria Smith--Bria's very prolific costume is inspired by the National Flower of the British Virgin Islands, the Oleander. The pink flower is seen throughout the costume but especially as exaggerated petals framing her neck and at the bottom of her gown, bursting out of a carriage. The nude dress she is wearing is beaded with hundreds of sequins and is completed by a golden headdress. The entire look was very impressive and beautiful enough to make the No. 9 spot.

10. Miss Universe PERU Kelin Rivera--Kelin's National Costume is a work of Costume Art. period. When she came onto the stage, I gasped! It is inspired by several things: First, she came out covering her entire head, albeit only showing one eye, as an homage to the Tapada Limena, a unique mantle used by the Native Peruvian women to go anonymously out in public. The design of the gown itself is inspired by the Lord (or Christ) of Miracles, an image venerated in Lima Peru, painted by a slave, formerly of what is now Angola, who was brought to Peru. This costume needs to be in a museum ASAP!

11. Miss Universe BANGLADESH Shirin Akter Shela--Shirin's National Costume represents her country's culture and identity. The beautiful red Jamdani Sari is completed by a "hood" designed to pay homage to the iconic Bangladeshi Rickshaws. Finally, the jewelry imitates Bengali letters. I thought she looked elegant and I especially loved the mini rickshaw she carried; very original.

12. Miss Universe ECUADOR Christina Hidalgo--Christina's costume was inspired by a coastal town in Ecuador, Esmeralda. She first came out in a multi-tiered white folkloric off-the-shoulder dress with beautiful handsewn crystals and plastic paillettes. As she un-snapped her top, she unveiled a sexy sequined bodysuit/jumpsuit as well as a hand-painted mural lining the skirt. This was yet another "reveal" type of National Costume.  And it worked.

13. Miss Universe JAPAN Ako Kamo--Miss Universe Japan's costume is inspired by the Shisimai, the traditional Japanese Lion Dance. In the dance, the performers mimic the lion's movements in a lion costume, dancing with festival music. Ako did just that, coming out onto the stage, with a fabulous "fantasy lion" headdress, moving like one of those performers. She also donned an elegant green cape/coat, beautiful red kimono top with gold, red and black brocade obi, and black sating "jodhpur"-like blouson pants. The entire mini-performance was quite effective at bringing the crowd at happy attention.

14. Miss Universe MONGOLIA Gunzaya Bat-Erdene--The minute Miss Universe Mongolia stepped onto the stage in this, I thought I was witnessing Star Wars Queen Amidala COUTURE!!! This was even better than one of those costumes from the film! The gorgeous red and black gown was straight off a Haute Couture runway with its dramatic and architectural shape and structure. The horned headdress was EXQUISITE and perfectly dramatic.

15. Miss Universe EL SALVADOR Zuleika Soler--Zuleika paid tribute to Salvadorean artist Fernando Llort with this fantastic costume that featured a Mermaid-shaped hand-painted skirt with a petticoat underneath, a "flora and fauna" bra top and immense artisanal contraption attached to her back which she had to hold the entire time. Llort was known for his colorful art depicting life and culture in El Salvador. He passed away last year.

16. Miss Universe NETHERLANDS Sharon Pieksma--Sharon's National Costume, entitled "Lost In Trash", was a one-shoulder design showcasing what happens to plastic materials that end up in the water, polluting it. The see-through-like dress represented the clear sea while the ruffled multitiered overskirt, which she fanned out to display all the trash that ends up in the oceans in the inner lining. It was quite a beautiful way to display such a powerful message.

17. Miss Universe UKRAINE Anastasia Subbotta--Anastasia was another contestant displaying her passion for being "Eco-Conscious". The costume, designed by SVITLO , was entitled "Green Ukraine" and represents how a bird would see her country's terrain and land as it would fly over it. The design features 1000 pieces of fabric in different shades of green, has many feathers, sequins, and 3D lace and took 2 1/2 months to make.

18. Miss USA Chelsie Kryst--Chelsie's costume pays homage to Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" (the wings), "Rosie The Riveter" (the headband), the Statue of Liberty (the torch and crown) and "Lady Justice" (the scales she's holding). The one-shoulder outer dress was painted denim and underneath, there was a satin-and-feathers underskirt. It was designed and created by Martin Izquierdo of Izquierdo Studio in NYC, who has worked with Heidi Klum, Lady Gaga and Madonna.

19. Miss Universe BOLIVIA Fabiana Hurtado--Fabiana's costume, entitled "Amazonian Phoenix: The Rebirth of the Jungle", represents the rebirth of the Amazonian Jungle from the fires that have consumed it. It is a tribute to the Bolivian flora and fauna affected during the burning fires. The costume is a protest to the human beings who have abused the incredible jungles and forests around the world.

And lastly...

20. Miss Universe URUGUAY Fiona Tenuta: Another South American ends up in my Top 20 National Costume List...this time Miss Universe Uruguay. It pays tribute to the Uruguayan flag which features the blue and white stripes (here in sequins) and sun (back "wings"). I thought it looked impressive, very "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" and quite fabulous.

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2019 National Costumes PREVIEW: 20+ Costumes!

Universal Costumes--(L to R) Miss Universe Thailand Paweensuda Drouin, Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe Vietnam Hoang Thuy, Miss Universe Indonesia Frederika Akexis Cull and Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson

It's THAT TIME KIDS: MISS UNIVERSE!!! The 2019 Miss Universe pageant is happening--with the Finals in Atlanta Georgia USA on Sunday, December 8th. Most of the 92 (!) contestants are making their way down to Atlanta so while we wait for the Preliminaries, it's time to reveal some of the fabulous, "interesting" and oh-so-creative National Costumes.

Time to take a look at what some of this year's Miss Universe National Costumes will be...

Divided by geographical region, let's start with...

AFRICA:

Miss South Africa Universe Zozibini Tunzi--Zozibini has unveiled her national costume entry for Miss Universe 2019 beauty pageant. Entitled Waves of Love the costume incorporates love letters from men to South African women as part of Zozibini’s support of the #HeForShe campaign, which seeks to activate men in the struggle against gender-based violence. It was designed by Lloyd Kandlin , who was responsible for the national costume worn by 2017 Miss Universe winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Pieters.

Miss Namibia Universe Nadja Breytenbach--Nadja's colorful costume was designed by South African designer Mzukisi Mbane . The Director of the Miss Namibia pageant Connie Maritz explained that the national costume is structured to celebrate the strength of Namibia: The headpiece reflects the formidable and unique collection of Africa's wildlife, the bodysuit embraces references to the diverse and exciting tribes within the country. I do love the different prints and stylish "horned" headdress.

ASIA, OCEANIA & THE MIDDLE EAST:

Miss Australia Universe Priya Serrao--Priya's national costume represents the iconic Australia frilled neck lizard. The dress is inspired by Aboriginal culture and the colors of the Outback. The costume was made by Claudia Williams of Llani Creative using recyclable materials and artwork by Wangkangurru/Yarluyandi women from the Simpson Desert as well as Bidjara men. They told stories of their country through paintings on canvas which were incorporated into the 6,200 scales in the dress. The "wearable art" creation took approximately 200 hours to put together. One thing is for sure, I cannot wait for the comparisons to the other iconic Australian lizard:

  Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Miss Indonesia Universe Frederika Alexis Cull--Frederika's national costume is inspired by the legacy of Srikandi. Srikandi is a symbol of the fighting spirit of the women of Nusantara, the Indonesian word for the Indonesian Archipelago. Exquisite details and appliques in the costume symbolize fire, the "machete" batik motif, and the bow and arrow...

Represent "Glory" and "Hope" respectively. The costume was designed by a collaboration between Morphacio Body Art and Mayaratih Couture.

Miss Israel Universe Sella Sharlin--Entitled "Tears of Hope", this costume connects the present with the past while looking toward the future. The strapless gown features a white base with blue ombre dyed hem treatment. I think it's a very stylish and chic design for sure.

Miss Japan Universe Ako Kamo--The theme for Miss Universe Japan's national costume is Shisimai, the traditional Japanese Lion Dance in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to festival music. It was designed by Yuuki Akiyama, and features the "lion" feathered headdress which she holds on to, and in conjunction, she is wearing a Kimono Fab chic look.

Miss South Korea Universe Lee Yeong-joo--A gorgeous and very regal Hanbok is what's at stake for Miss South Korea Universe's national costume. Beautiful yellow/gold-toned silks, luxurious silver brocades...an outstanding back detail, and that fabulous headdress, all add up to a costume work of art!

Miss Malaysia Universe Shweta Sekhon--Shweta is set to present to the world Malaysia’s Peranakan culture in a special costume entitled "A Peranakan Indulgence". The creation comes complete with trays of traditional Malay sweets and delicacies "kuih-muih", including onde-onde, kuih talam, red eggs, ang ku kuih and more. Taking over 3 months to complete, the Carven Ong -designed costume weighs a total of 28kg, and is made up of a songket (Malay brocade fabric) with delicate embroidery and beadwork, headgear with gold aster flowers, and wings designed to look like Nyonya batik. Its golden cape, threads, and red beading were inspired by traditional Peranakan bridal wear.

Miss Myanmar Universe Swe Zin Htet--The buffalo is the "strength of the Myanmar agriculture" and so...it makes perfect sense for Miss Universe Myanmar's national costume to be an Avant-garde Couture Buffalo!

Miss Singapore Universe Mohana Prabha--Designed by Filipino-born Dubai-based Couturier Michael Cinco , the fuchsia pink design. The gown was inspired by the Vanda Miss Joaquim, also known as the "Singapore Orchid"...

And was previously shown as part of the designer's "Impalpable Dream of Swan Lake" collection at the "Fashion Forward Dubai" shows.

Miss Vietnam Universe Hoang Thuy--Miss Universe Vietnam's national costume is always a fun and exciting design. Last year, Vietnam wore a banh mi costume for FASHION'S SAKE! So yeah, always exciting to find out what that country's contestant ends up wearing. Every year, they have a contest and this year's winner was the design that depicted "Ca Phe Phin Sua Da”--Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk. The costume was created by designer Tran Nguyen Minh Duc. It features a bedazzled jumpsuit. But that's just the beginning: It also has a large spoon prop, filter headpiece, and cup skirt. Word is she might ditch the cup skirt and stick with just the sequined jumpsuit and spoon. Personally, I would LOVE to see the iced coffee cup design on the right in the above photo!

Miss Thailand Universe Paweensuda "Fahsai" Drouin--Designer Alongkorn Kongin has attempted to capture the eye-popping spectacle of the Phi Ta Khon Festival, the annual Ghost Festival, in a form-fitting short dress of copper-clad aluminum wire arranged in a distinctly Thai art pattern, topped with a 70-centimeter hat made of the same material. Much of the color of the ensemble comes from a huge phi ta khon mask that Paweensuda will carry, which is made of used plastic bags and other recycled material collected by her fans. The mask represents liveliness and fun, while the short dress reflecting the light bears an undeniable grace, according to the designer.

EUROPE:

Miss Belgium Universe Angeline Flor Pua: Designed by Roman Vdck , this Swan-inspired national costume. The Swans that are revered in Bruges, and therefore makes perfect sense for Miss Belgium Universe to don this Swan Queen costume.

Miss Czech Republic Universe Barbora Horacova--Designed by David Hanykyr , this Czech National Costume was inspired by the 30th Anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. Featured in the design are golden leaves of the Linden Tree which is one of the Czech Republic's national symbols, but more prominently featured is the Czech Flag which creates a full skirt with a long train.

Miss Denmark Universe Katja Stockholm--Demark's National Costume is a Viking Queen, representing a strong, powerful woman, connected to nature, spiritual world, and her according to the contestant, herb own "feminine qualities". The costume, created by Jewlify , is handmade, mostly from recycled materials. The couple who owns the design company is said to have a great love for tribal cultures and put great honor creating handmade work with respect to sustainability, quality, and local production.

Miss Poland Universe Olga Bulawa--Olga's costume seems to be inspired by the "Peace Dove",

commemorating the Congress of the World Council of Peace in 1977 which took place in Poland. Created and designed by Polish designer Patrycja Kujawa and features handmade crystal and beadwork as well as outstanding feather detail.

Miss Slovakia Universe Laura Longauerova--Laura's National Costume dress is very personal to her: The embroidery in this dress was from her grandmother--from 50 years ago! She gave Laura this embroidery as a present for Miss Universe 2019 to bring her luck. The traditional and folkloric design is simple, featuring handmade needlework, using a special technique called "oblique needle", typical of the region where she comes from. The dress and shawl were designed by MIHLOSHO Miklosko Fashion Design

Miss Ukraine Universe Anastasia Subbota--Entitled "Green Ukraine", following the fact the Green has become a symbol this year in Ukraine. The idea of the costume is to show Ukraine the way the bird sees it from the height of its flight. A flying bird sees meadows, fertile land, forests, rivers, the flora and fauna of the country. Designed and created by SVITLO, who have done the Ukraine National Costumes for the 4th consecutive year. This particular costume has 1000 pieces of fabric (!) of different shades of green and is decorated with feather stripes, sequins, and 3D lace and a team of ten people worked on the costume for 2 1/2 months!

AMERICAS:

Miss Bolivia Universe Fabiana Hurtado--Entitled the "Amazonian Phoenix: The Rebirth of the Jungle", on the wings of the majestic macaw Jacinto as an Amazonian Phoenix, this costume represents the rebirth from the ashes of the Bolivian jungle, which was consumed by the flames of the burning Amazon. It is a tribute to Bolivian flora and fauna that were affected during the fire. The bodysuit is inspired by the jaguar and Bolivian coral snake, Bird of Paradise flowers. The costume is a protest to raise awareness about the abuse of human beings in the jungles and forests of the world.

Miss Curacao Universe Kyrsha Attaf--On social media, Kyrsha showed off her "Dushi" National Costume. Dushi is an Antillean/Papiamento word that can describe many things including "Sweet", "Sexy", "Tasty", all positive. The costume is very "Curacao Carnival" featuring drums, colorful feathers, sequined crop top and high-low skirt, and a BIG horn! She definitely the most festive "Carnival Drum Queen" in the Miss Universe 2019 National Costumes so far!

Miss Ecuador Universe Cristina Hidalgo--Entitled "I'm Esmeralda", the costume was designed by Benyamin Maffare, it is inspired by Esmeraldas, a coastal city in Ecuador, in the Province of Esmeraldas. The design encompasses a headdress, scarf accompanied by a turban with handmade details and decorated in silver and rhinestones. The delicate white blouse showcases elements like snails and African necklaces.

Miss Peru Universe Kelin Rivera--Wearing a very traditional gown merging the Colonial past, religious icons with Jesus Christ on the cross featured prominently in the front panel of the period gown. The design celebrates the Lord of Miracles (also knowns as Christ of Miracles), an image that is venerated in Lima Peru that was painted in the 17th Century by an unnamed slave taken from what is now Angola to Peru. The costume is also inspired by the tapada limeña, a unique mantle that was used to cover the faces of the women-only permitting an eye to be seen. This mantle represented freedom, allowing women to roam free through the streets with anonymity.

Miss Puerto Rico Universe Madison Anderson--Madison's National Costume was designed by  Joshuan Aponte , who also designed part of the wardrobe for last year's Miss Universe Puerto Rico. This design is inspired by the diverse nature of Puerto Rico and in particular, the spectacular red flower, named "Flor de Maga", the Thespesia Grandiflora or Hibiscus, which is a national symbol of the island. And in case you were wondering what the gold sequined chest plate represents? It's the Coqui Dorado, or Golden Coqui, a rare species of FROG (!) endemic in Puerto Rico.

So....there you have it, some of the National Costumes you will see at Miss Universe 2019!!! Stay tuned here on my "Sashes & Tiaras" BLOG for more Miss Universe 2019 STYLE COVERAGE!!!

ICE STYLE.....2019 NHK Trophy Figure Skating COSTUMES: ICE DANCE & PAIRS!

Flashdance Perfection--Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France during their Ice Dance skates at 2019 NHK Trophy, Sapporo Japan

Pairs Style--(Top) Wenjing Sui and Cong Han of China and (Lower photo) Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro of Canada at 2019 NHK Trophy, Sapporo Japan

In my last ICE STYLE post  HERE , I discussed the costumes from the LADIES and MEN of the 2019 NHK Trophy ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating competition...so now it is time to talk about the costumes of the ICE DANCE and PAIRS...

Let's start with ICE DANCE:

Shiyue Wang and Xinyu Liu China Rhythm Dance to The Look-A-Like Contest by Christopher Curtis, Life Can Be Like the Movies by Christopher Curtis, Titine (from "Modern Times") by Leo Daniderff--For their Rhythm Dance, this Chinese pair was costumed a la Charlie Chaplin following the 2006 musical "Chaplin", of course. I liked how chic and sleek these were, especially her almost Dior "Bar" Jacket-like. I also loved her black and silver painted nails (it's the little details that matter!). He also looked nice. I am not normally a fan of matching outfits but here they worked.

Free Dance to Nina's Dream, Perfection, A Swan Is Born (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell based on Swan Lake by P. I. Tchaikovski--These were stunning costumes. Period. Hers featured a nude illusion top with silver/black sequin applique and a chiffon flowy dress. He was actually THE COSTUME STAR! I loved his black swan "wings" displayed proudly on his white knit jersey top. This was a perfect costumed ICE DANCE pairing. Gorgeous!

Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri Italy Free Dance to Space Oddity by David Bowie performed by Amanda Palmer Jherez Bischoff, Life on Mars? by David Bowie performed by Lukas Nelson, Promise of the Real, Space Oddity by David Bowie performed by Amanda Palmer Jherez Bischoff--I just LOVED these costumes worn by Italians Guignard and Fabbri for their Free Dance. The "Cosmic Chic" looks were sublime, fashion-forward and on-point with the music. Fabbri's black look included the requisite black pants and a great mock-neck stretch top with a sequined-and-sheer sleeve. Charlene was like a Space Odyssey-Paco Rabanne-Courreges Fashion Diva in this ivory look featuring beautiful, sequined spider web-like detail and a slit-front mini skirt.

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron France Rhythm Dance to I Can Do Anything Better Than You Can by S. Linzer & D. Wolfert (arrang. by Maxime Rodriguez) from "Fame" by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchsord, Fame by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchsford (arranged by Maxime Rodriguez and Ludivine Amado), Fame by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchsford, performed by Irene Cara--Take a big guess what Papadakis and Cizeron skated to for their Rhythm Dance. If you guessed Olivia Newton-John's "Physical"? Nope. But if you guessed "Flashdance"? You get a prize! The skate and these costumes were EVERYTHING!!! Only this fab French Ice Dance pair can pull off 80's leotards, headbands and legwarmers in such a flawless manner that no one, absolutely NO ONE, batted an eyelash! It was fab cheesy, disco-licious and Retro Chic, all at the same time. Oh, and their Rhythm Dance left me in a jazzercise sweat: J'adore!

Free Dance to Danny by Olafur Arnalds, Find Me by Forest Blakk, Suspects by Olafur Arnalds--Skating to the gorgeous music from the British TV drama "Broadchurch" and a spoken word poem, Papadakis and Cizeron took Ice Dance to yet even more heightened level. Their simple, modern dance-like costumes mirrored the music and choreography beautifully and seamlessly; the sheer vs. solid all-black looks was directional and almost became invisible within their incredible skating. These looks were a costume change from what they had worn before and added the silver "splashes" on their tops: I LOVED that! The silver detail added a nice visual element to their otherwise very monochrome all-black looks.

And...in case you were wondering what those all-black looks were:

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France, Free Dance at Internationaux de France 2019

PAIRS:

Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro Canada Short Program to Love On the Brain (Los Feliz Blvd) feat. Bishop Briggs--I liked these pretty costumes worn by Kirsten and Michael. The striped sequin detail on her dress was nice: There was an Art Deco/Erte element to her graphic costume and very "Rockettes".  I also liked his "subdued" version of her striped look. Very nice.

Free Skate to Carry You by Ruelle (feat. Fleurie)--I really liked Kirsten's nude/peach one-shoulder draped dress that she wore for her Free Skate with Michael. It was fashionable, the sequin applique looked expensive and I also appreciated the "crown" on her head.

Wenjing Sui and Cong Han China Short Program to Blues Deluxe by Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart performed by Joe Bonamassa--These looks make me want to go out dancing at a Blues/Jazz concert! Her one-shoulder black costume with silver sequins was THE DEFINITION of "Razzle Dazzle". I especially loved his silver crystal raw-edge "suspenders"; they looked as if they had been torn off after too much dancing fun! And...(yes, there is more!), his studded jeans were quite fab too!

ICE STYLE.....2019 NHK Trophy Figure Skating COSTUMES: LADIES & MEN!

Sequined Kings and Queens--(L to R) Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan (Far left, second from left), Rika Kihira of Japan and Alena Kostornaia of Russia--2019 NHK Trophy Sapporo Japan

This past weekend was the 2019 NHK Trophy , the "Grand Prix of Japan" competition event for the 2019-2010 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, which was held in Sapporo Japan. As it is custom here on my "Ice Style" BLOG, I discuss the figure skating costumes so now, after blogging about all the previous competitions HERE , it is time to do a Costume Recap of 2019 NHK Trophy. Let's start with the LADIES and MEN for this BLOG. First up, the...

LADIES:

Alena Kostornaia Russia Short Program to Departure (Lullaby) from "The Leftovers" (soundtrack) by Max Richter and November by Max Richter--Alena wore this white costume (in keeping with the white looks seen in the HBO show "The Leftovers") featuring subtle blue tie-dyeing, dark blue/gray accents on the sides and back and delicate beading. I thought the dye detail formed quite a nice design on the torso of the costume, almost giving a sea creature or angel-like effect. The back is STUNNING as you can see in the photo above and the gloves are EVERYTHING with the crystals and spikey/winged details; I am thinking it is definitely more "Angel" from the Heavens for sure.

Free Skate to The Meadow (from "New Moon" soundtrack) by Alexandre Desplat, Eyes on Fire (from "Twilight" soundtrack) by Blue Foundation and Supermassive Black Hole by Muse--For her Free Skate, Alena wore a costume featuring a purple base, sweetheart neckline, black accents, silver rhinestones and red blood-like sequin accents. I liked the not-so-subtle homage to the "Twilight" movies' vampire theme and the subtle details such as those gloves; she looked pretty yet slightly deadly. I especially liked the neckline's sequined "fangs" motif.

Alina Zagitova Russia Short Program to Me Voy by Yasmin Levy--Russia's Olympian Alina Zagitova was vibing the Spanish flamenco theme with this black lace and sequined costume. I wasn't overly moved by this look; to be honest, it seemed a bit "old" and rather uninspiring for her. All that lace and darkness reminded me of the black lace Mantillas the widows wear to their husband's funerals. The one word that comes to mind is "Bland".

Free Skate to The Feeling Begins by Peter Gabriel, Lawrence Of Arabia by Maurice Jarre and Ramses by Khatir Hicham--With a Middle East-themed soundtrack ranging from "The Last Temptation of Christ" to "Lawrence of Arabia" to Egypt, we arrive at this fabulous costume worn by Zagitova. After a rather dull Short Program design, I was very happy to see this for sure! I loved the one-shoulder black-draped design with sequined nude illusion and in particular, the turquoise jeweled "Cleopatra"-like wings at the bust. Oh, and then those incredible details like the necklace, shoulder epaulets, snake wrist accents, and gold paillettes used as eye makeup were fabulous.

Eun-soo Lim Korea Free Skate to Sabrina (soundtrack)--Very "Sabrina"...you've got the necklace, the sweetheart neckline, the sequined bodice...this nude-colored costume was elegant, very delicately pretty and right for the music. She is literally the "Pageant Betty" of Figure Skating, especially here in this costume.

Karen Chen USA Free Skate to Illumination by Secret Garden--Karen wore this very pretty costume for her Free Skate. I thought she looked quite delicate and beautiful in this lightly ombre-dyed lilac costume featuring heavy-to-light sequins highlighting the torso. I liked how the nude illusion seemed to disappear highlighting the jeweled "shoulder straps".

Rika Kihira Japan Short Program to Breakfast in Baghdad by Ulf Wakenius performed by Youn Sun Nah--Japan's Rika Kihira wore this red sequined costume. I liked the design and black ombre dye effect under the silver rhinestones, as well as the delicately asymmetrical skirt. The look was a bit "Vampira" but the red and black coloring was impacting, especially against her porcelain-like skin. This was a COSTUME CHANGE from what she wore before at Skate Canada International and the Autumn Classic:

Which costume do you guys like better? Red or Blue?

Free Skate to International Angel of Peace: O Virtus Sapientae by Hildgard of Bingen performed by Maya Beiser, Beirut Taxi (from “Syriana” soundtrack) by Alexandre Desplat, Wings of the Eagle by Uttara-Kuru, Caravan on the Move (from “Caravans”) by Mike Batt, Mother Tongue by Dead Can Dance, Sacred Stones by Sheila Chandra, In A Moment of Greatness by Larry Groupé)--Rika wore this olive-toned costume featuring ombre dyeing effect and gold sequined embroidery. I wasn't a fan of the rather drab color and the gold lace applique was a tad too "Mother-of-the-Bride" old. This was also a COSTUME CHANGE...

From this blue and gold costume above, which she worn for her Free Skate before. I DEFINITELY liked this blue one better.

Now, let's discuss THE MEN:

Jason Brown USA Free Skate to Schindler's List (soundtrack) by John Williams--For his Free Skate to "Schindler's List", Jason wore this ombre dyed gray costume featuring a Lycra turtleneck with sequin applique, deep gray pants, and cummerbund-like waist accessory. I thought this was an elegant design and I especially liked the sequined top with a detail that reminded me of the Manhattan skyline, but I think the pants were way too baggy.

Koshiro Shimada Japan Short Program to Stay by Cynthia Erivo, Oliver Tompsett--18-year-old Koshiro wore this blue costume for his Short Program. The Lycra top featured multicolored sequins and an asymmetrical neckline. He paired it with black pants. It was a nice look but still a bit "Junior"-esque. Maybe I should just be happy that it didn't look as if he went to the Japanese version of "Men's Warehouse" and bought a basic shirt, pants, and 90's black belt, like some of the Men's figure skater are wont to do.

Sergei Voronov Russia Free Skate to I Belong to You/Mon Cœur S’Ouvre à ta Voix by Muse--Sergei wore this purple/lilac colored stretch top withy very dark grape-colored pants. The color story was nice and I liked the color blocking effect. I also liked the contrast back zip. Do I wish there was more? yes. I am just not sure what that more would be.

Yuzuru Hanyu Short Program to Otonal by Raul di Blasio--Yuzuru Hanyu rehashed his same Short Program music from last season for this 2019-2010 season. I liked this season's costume with its jaggedy edges and beautiful rhinestones. It all makes for a striking design on the torso, giving a "Snow King" effect, like stylish icicles. I know that he is a fan of the neck ruffle detail which makes for a nice "framed face", but here it looked a bit too "children's costume"-like.

Free Skate to Origin ("Art on Ice")  by Edvin Marton--This was a STUNNING costume worn by Yuzuru Hanyu. The subtle purple shading, the beautiful gold curved rhinestone design, the juxtaposition of the solid vs. the sheer, the 3D effect of the applique...all details that add up to a very Couture-like design that is right for such a Couture-like figure skater.
