SASHES AND TIARAS.....BEST BEAUTY PAGEANT GOWNS of 2019: My TOP BEST RECAP!

Best of the Best--Selection of my TOP PICKS for BEST PAGEANT GOWNS of 2019 (L to R) Miss World Philippines Michelle Dee, Miss Universe Indonesia Frederika Alexis Cull, Miss Universe South Africa (and Miss Universe 2019) Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados, and Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson
The time has come...to come up with my BEST OF THE BEST LIST of Beauty Pageant Gowns, from the top International Beauty Pageants. This has become something of a tradition here on my BLOG and so, why stop (and my Blog Readers were asking!!)? I narrowed down my criteria to the following international beauty pageants: Miss Grand International , Miss International , Miss World , and Miss Universe , so if you think I might have missed some UBER-FABULOUS gowns from other pageants...sorry.

Gown Gorgeous of 2019: (L to R) Miss Universe Colombia Gabriela Tafur, Miss Grand Ecuador Mara Topic, Miss World Nigeria Niekachi Douglas, Miss International Venezuela Melissa Jimenez, Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi
Let's begin with my TOP FAVORITES from...
MISS GRAND INTERNATIONAL 2019:

Miss Grand Ecuador Mara Topic--Mara looked elegant and very beautiful in this gold sequined gown. It was dramatic, figure-flattering and I especially loved the back golden cape. I also liked that the entire gown wasn't entirely sheer and that the length was perfect (no sight of those tacky platform heels!).

Miss Grand Venezuela and Miss Grand International 2019 Valentina Figueroa--Winner of the 2019 Miss Grand International crown, Venezuela's Valentina Figueroa was also my top choice for Evening Gown. Designed by Venezuelan designer Nidal Nouaihed, the gown was on trend with the slew of "nude gowns" that have been a favorite of late, for beauty pageant contestants as well as celebs on the red carpet. This particular gown featured a nude tulle illusion base with striking silver sequins throughout. The dress also had a center front slit and interesting horsehair netting shoulder detail. During the Preliminaries, she wore the gown with a back overskirt in peach iridescent organza (with crystals on it) to add drama, but it was removed for the Finals. I think this was a good move to remove it.

Miss Grand Mexico Maria Malo--Maria wore the strapless lilac-colored sequined gown for the Finals. The column shape fit her well, making her look TEN FEET TALL, and as a Fashionista, I really appreciated the unique sleeve. Muy Bien! I am sure many pageant followers were probably not fans of that sleeve but...darlings, I am here to tell you: It's FASHION!

Miss Grand Thailand Arayha Suparurk--I absolutely LOVED Miss Grand Thailand! She had personality, realness and was ready for her close-up....every time! For her evening gown, she wore this red and blue sequined one-shoulder design from Unkuniya. The gown was super sexy, featuring the red-and-blue sequined panel with a nude leg-and-torso-exposing side, as well as iridescent organza back cape detail. Was it probably A LOT? Maybe. But I loved it. She SOLD IT like her rent was due! The only thing is...those SHOES! Next time, strappy non-platform ones.

Miss Grand Peru Camila Escribens--This Peruvian beauty, Camila Escribens, actually received the trophy for Best Gown for Miss Grand International 2019. This golden encrusted gown was certainly a stage-impacting design and well-deserved of the trophy. This was another one of those "Nude Gowns", with the gold sequin applique and silver rhinestones. It also had gold beading falling from her shoulders. With her straight dark center-parted hair, she was very "Bob Mackie Cher" in this, which means I LOVED IT! If there was any critique, I am just not a fan of the "sistahs" being so...well...on display; they were smooshed and took away from the dress design.

Miss Grand India Shivani Jadhav--In a gorgeous gown designed by Falguni Shane Peacock, Shivani certainly made a strong gown impact. This gold sequined dress fit her to perfection and featured a v-neck, sequined belt, and side front slit. It was very Red Carpet Fab!

Miss Grand Vietnam Nguyen Ha Kieu--Miss Grand Vietnam triumphed the Evening Gown Preliminaries with wearing the only jumpsuit "gown". And I loved it! It was designed by Do Long and featured a stunning golden/nude sequined jumpsuit with hand-applied yellow feathered exaggerated sleeves. It was dramatic, stage-worthy and fashion unique! When she appeared on stage, all I could say was "You Go Girl!". And that is why she made my Best of 2019 Pageant Gown List!
MISS INTERNATIONAL 2019:

Miss Venezuela International Melissa Jimenez--Melissa didn't make the Top 8 of "Miss International 2019" but made my Best o0f the Best Pageant Gowns of 2019 List. Wearing this gorgeous red sequined gown from Venezuelan designer Douglas Tapia, she looked like Pageant Perfection. The minute I saw this gown, it was like a "Drop-the-Mic" moment. The gown featured red sequined applique on nude stiff netting, beautifully applied in an off-the-shoulder very fitted column dress design with a dramatic attached cape. The dress was "nude", in that it was see-through but she did wear a nude leotard (like a very fancy Spanx) that covered her torso. The design was impacting, looked very Haute Couture and fit her perfectly.

Miss Mexico International Andrea Toscano--Andrea wore this shimmering silver gown that made a very strong gown impression during the Miss International 2019 Finals in Japan. The design featured stunning silver beaded and pearl sequin applique over a netting background. It was fully covered in beads at the sweetheart necklined torso and had these dramatic bell-shaped sleeves. It fit her beautifully and I liked that it was lined as opposed to fully see-through for a change. This was my other TOP FAVORITE GOWN from Miss International 2019.
MISS WORLD 2019:

Miss World Nigeria Nyekachi Douglas--One word: WOW! The nearly six-foot-tall beauty wore this emerald green one-shoulder sheath of a gown for the Final and well, she got MY HIGHEST Gown Score! The crepe design featured a fitted bodice with one shoulder strap and a wrap, slit-skirt that showed off her leg. It also had silver jeweled sequins that were placed correctly and elongated her already long figure. At the hem, there were delicate crystal feather-like designs. This was elegant, chic and thoroughly Pageant Modern. Oh, and what a shocker: She wore the right strappy heels! Love.

Miss World Philippines Michelle Dee--In a gown designed by Filipino designer Francis Libiran , Michelle conquered my No. 2 "Miss World 2019" Gown Spot. I thought she looked gorgeous in this teal-colored sequined gown with a front opening, sheer illusion panels, and dramatic full sleeve drapes. It was DRAMA and not in a Diva way...more PRETTY DRAMA. Her chic slicked hair and proper silver strappy heels were STYLE PERFECTION!
MISS UNIVERSE 2019:

Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi--STUNNING. A breath of fresh gown air, after so many too-heavily-beaded cheap polyester-looking tacky neon-colored gowns at this past year's "Miss Universe" Preliminary Competition. When Zozibini came out in this white gown with matching cape, it was like a Gwyneth Paltrow-Tom Ford moment at the Oscars. She looked elegant, divine, elegant, regal-like. And to top it all off, the cape (whose outer layer is white velvet) featured a gorgeous sequined black-and-white printed Xhosa-inspired patterning motif that just about made me swoon. This was Gown Perfection, custom-designed by South Africa's Biji-La Maison de Couture . Definitely one of my TOP BEST of 2019!

Miss Universe South Africa Zozibini Tunzi--The eventual winner of 2019 Miss Universe wore this shimmering gown for last night's Evening Gown Competition. This was a Gown Change from the previous gown which she wore for the Preliminaries. The design featured a gold and silver sequined pattern that ended in a "sea" of turquoise toward the hem. The bodice was nude but covered in the appropriate places with coral-like sequin design. In addition, it featured beautifully cowl-draped sequins in long strands framing the top. It was impacting, sexy and fit her perfectly. The dress was by Biji-La Maison de Couture, the same designer/brand that made her gown for the Preliminary Competition.

Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados--This golden gown worn by Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados was one of my BEST OF 2019 PAGEANT GOWNS for sure. It was inspired by the Philippine Eagle and designed by Filipino Designer Cary Santiago . The gown featured a fabric manipulated textured design, a fit-and-flare strapless silhouette with bird-and-wing-like details at the bust, and pleated lower half, creating a dramatic bottom skirt effect. This dress stood out for uniqueness and Haute Couture-like drama.

Miss Indonesia Frederika Alexis Cull--Let's start with the dress on the left, the design worn for the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries: Frederika took my breath away in this one-shoulder red and black sequined gown from Indonesian designer Tex Saverio . The design was inspired by the "Spirit of the Phoenix" and fire and featured a side-front slit as well as a shoulder "fall" drape. She looked Cher-like and ready to present an Academy Award...or get one herself!
But then, for the Finals, she changed her gown to this "Nude"-gold number: Frederika Cull wore another one of those golden/nude sequined gowns very popular with pageant and red carpet ladies. This gown was also designed by Tex Saverio, the same designer who made her Preliminaries gown. The dress is beautifully made, as it has become custom from many of these Indonesian designers, featuring heavily beaded designs, simulating diamond necklaces draped all over her sinuous body. Under this see-through sequined netting, she wore a nude-colored strapless corsetted bodysuit, like a very Haute Spanx. She looked sexy and glamorous. I was also extremely happy that she wore the RIGHT SHOES!

Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson--This contestant was in it to WIN IT! When Madison came out SLITHERING in this gold sequined gown, she might as well have ended the Evening Gown competition right then and there. I thought the gown, which was designed by Luis Antonio , was PERFECTION! The way the gold mirrored sequins were placed on the gown, as well as the UBER SEXY column shape, reminded me of the "Good Ol' Days" of the Miss Venezuela Pageant Alta Moda evening gown shows.

Miss Universe Colombia Gabriela Tafur--Looking sublime, gorgeous in this silver sequined gown, Miss Universe Colombia was GOWN PERFECTION. This was a simple design that did the job of having stage presence, making her look elegant and modern. I recognized the Alfredo Barraza design since the Colombian designer is known for these styles of dresses; he does them VERY WELL! Once again, in a sea of off-the-rack polyester sequined dresses, this one stood out for looking expensive, well done and on another level.

Miss Universe France Maeva Coucke--I was very impressed with Miss Universe France's gown and therefore had to place her in my BEST OF THE BEST LIST here. The white see-through gown was striking, chic and was on another level of all the other see-through sequined dresses seen on display. It was designed by Lebanese Designer Ziad Nakad and featured hand-beaded jeweled sequins, feathers, and dangling paillettes. It fit beautifully and was very Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week!

Miss Universe Croatia Mia Rkman--One of the rare black gowns at the Miss Universe 2019 Preliminaries (in a sea of pink, blue, silver, gold) was this one worn by Miss Universe Croatia. The gown featured a see-through netting base with heavy black sequined applique and multilayered tiers of organza creating a fabulously structured, dramatic shape. While her exaggerated hair bun was a bit TOO MUCHEEY, it didn't affect my gown critique. I put this gown here for it's Alexander McQueen-like gown elevated fabulousness.
Lastly...

Miss Universe Vietnam Hoang Thuy--Speaking of SUPER SEXY and barely-there dresses...Miss Universe Vietnam gets my "This Gal Has Got Nerve!" and "THE BODY" to pull this off! In a gown by Vietnamese Designer Nguyen Cong Tri , Hoang slithered her way down the runway stage in this white chiffon design with nude tulle one-sleeved top featuring flower-like sequined appliques. This might as well have been an "Evening Swimsuit" since like 90% of her body was showing. I loved it, especially for the fact that she was OWNING that stage and had a look of "What are Y'all Looking At?" You are looking at THE BODY of this year's Miss Universe, darlings! J Lo, you might want to get in touch with this designer ASAP!
That's It! My TOP BEST BEAUTY PAGEANT GOWNS of 2019!

During our time filming the Premiere Episode of Bravo's Season 18 "Project Runway" , as a Consulting Producer , I got the chance to be at the iconic TWA Flight Center--or JFK Terminal 5 as it is also known--which is now the TWA Hotel . You can go HERE , HERE and HERE to check out some of my other BLOGS on filming here for the show, but this one involves actually visiting the restored TWA-branded Lockheed Constellation airplane from the 1950's that is now...A BAR!!!

Hostesswear--Nick Verreos at the TWA Hotel JFK Airport, at the TWA Hostess/Flight Attendant Exhibition of TWA Uniforms through the decades from top fashion designers--TWA Hotel, JFK Airport
This past Summer, we filmed this new Season 18 of "Project Runway" which is airing now on Bravo TV . We filmed the announcement of the first challenge at the iconic TWA Flight Center/JFK Terminal 5, which is now the super fab TWA Hotel . As a Consulting Producer for the show, I got great access to the location and naturally, as an avid fan of anything involving airlines and airplanes, I was like a kid in a candy store!

Flight Attendant Chic--TWA Flight Attendant styles through the decades from Oleg Cassini, Valentino, TWA Hotel JFK Airport
I was EXTRA happy to see a very special Exhibition at the TWA Hotel showing all the different TWA Flight Attendant Couture through the years...or as they titled it "TWA Hostess Uniforms". Check out all the chic and oh-so-fabulous TWA uniforms designed from the likes of Don Loper, Oleg Cassini, Pierre Balmain, and Valentino. And while you look at these, just think back to those days when flight attendants actually looked quite chic.

How Can We Help You?--Enjoying time with the "TWA Hostesses" Stevie and Sarah, at the TWA Hotel JFK Airport
Last Summer, I worked on Season 18 "Project Runway" on Bravo TV as a Consulting Producer. It was a lot of work filled with LONG hours and lots of drama and decision-making (part of the job!), but there were also lots of exciting location filming. The first of which was the actual PREMIERE Episode that we filmed for the First Challenge. You can go HERE to check out my BLOG on it!

TWA Flight Center-TWA Hotel, JFK Airport
We filmed at the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Flight Center at the JFK Airport , which has been restored and remade into....the TWA Hotel . The building itself is a MASTERPIECE of MidCentury/Neo-Futurism Architecture and Design, and naturally, I LOVE IT! I am a big fan of architecture and especially MidCentury design and in addition, I am also a big fan of anything regarding AIRPLANES and AIRLINE STYLE...
Here are photos I captured before--and after--filming our first episode introduction for Season 18 of "Project Runway":

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss World 2019 Final! Recap, EVENING GOWNS & "Dances of the World" COSTUMES

World Gowns--Miss World 2019 contestants (L to R) Miss World India Suman Rao, Miss World Nigeria Nyekachi Douglas, Miss World Jamaica Toni-Ann Singh, Miss World Philippines Michelle Dee, and Miss World Russia Alina Sanko--Miss World 2019 Final, London UK

Toni-Ann Singh "Miss World Jamaica" is the new Miss World--Miss World 2019 Final, London UK
This Saturday was the Final of the 69th Annual Miss World competition which occurred in London at the ExCeL. 111 women from all over the world competed for the coveted title. The lovely Toni-Ann Singh, who hails from Jamaica eventually took home the glittering crown. 23-year-old Toni-Ann Singh, Miss World Jamaica 2019, was born in Montego Bay Jamaica but moved to Florida USA since age nine...

Crowning Moment--Miss World Jamaica Toni-Ann Singh as she gets crowned by her predecessor, Miss World 2018 Vanessa Ponce of Mexico--Miss World 2019 Final, London UK
Singh studied at Florida State University where she graduated in women's studies and psychology. The 5' 5 1/2" (1.67 M) tall beauty, who sang a stunning rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" during the Final telecast, and answered a Q & A session with Piers Morgan intelligently with elegance and poise, now becomes the fourth woman from Jamaica to become Miss World.

Jamaican Beauty--Toni-Ann Singh "Miss World Jamaica", now Miss World 2019

Jamaican Madras--For her "Dances of the World" Introduction, Toni-Ann wore this traditional Jamaicas madras-plaid ensemble, consisting of an off-the-shoulder crop top with ruffled sleeves and mermaid-shaped multi-tiered skirt with ruffles. She danced her way into the judges' hearts--Miss World 2019 Final, London UK
More National Costumes from Miss World 2019 "Dances of the World":

Dances of The National Costume World--National Costumes displayed during the Miss World 2019 "Dances of the World" Introductions--(Clockwise, from top) Miss World Nicaragua Maria Teresa Cortez, Miss World Trinidad and Tobago Tya Jane Ramey, Miss World Panama Agustina Ruiz Arrechea, Miss World Venezuela Isabella Rodriguez, Miss World Philippines Michelle Dee, Miss World India Suman Rao, Miss World France Ophely Mezino, and Miss World Spain Maria del Mar Aguilera--Miss World 2019 Final, London UK
The 3+ hour show began with the introduction of all the 111 contestants, showcasing the traditional Miss World "Dances of the World" segment, where they get to do short dances from their native lands wearing traditional costumes. Normally, this is shown in an edited version, only showing a handpicked few doing these dances...but this year, it was used as the "National Parade of Nations"-like the segment where EVERY contestant was shown in "National Costume" doing a short traditional dance. While the introductions went on for a bit too long (there were 111 contestants!), it was nice to see the costumes and ladies doing their dances.
Now, time for the EVENING GOWNS!!!
Miss World no longer has an "Evening Gown Competition" a la Miss Universe so we got to see the contestants in their evening gowns when they announced the Top 12. So, here is my RECAP/REVIEW of the Miss World 2019 Evening Gowns, featuring the Top 12 contestants. I will begin with the eventual winner, Miss World Jamaica and her gown, even though, she placed 7th on my Top 12 List:

7. Miss World Jamaica Toni-Ann Singh--Toni-Ann wore this crisp white fit-and-flare gown with silver sequin applique at the torso. The fit was perfect and she looked nice and "Pageant Angelic" in it. Nothing too crazy and in fact, it was a nice conservative well-done look. I appreciated the perfect length, the no-show-of-shoes and loved the silver applique wing-like (or are they leaves?) framing her shoulders/top of her arms. She would have been higher if the contestants from Nigeria, Philippines, India...hadn't worn such slightly more impacting gowns...
Score 8.99

1. It also had silver jeweled sequins that were placed correctly and elongating her already long figure. At the hem, there were delicate crystal feather-like designs. This was elegant, chic and thoroughly Pageant Modern.
Score: 9.94 (out of 10)

2. Miss World Philippines Michelle Dee--In a gown designed by Filipino designer Francis Libiran , who also created her "Dances of the World" costume--Michelle conquered my No. 2 Gown Spot. I thought she looked gorgeous in this teal colored sequined gown with a front opening, sheer illusion panels, and dramatic full sleeve drapes. It was DRAMA and not in a Diva way...more PRETTY DRAMA. Her chic slicked hair and proper silver strappy heels were STYLE PERFECTION!
Score: 9.90

3. Miss India World Suman Rao--Miss World India looked sublime and oh-so-elegant in this silver sequined gown. The fit was nice, the silver was right for her...it was very, very nice. I liked the delicate rhinestones that were falling from her shoulders as well as her hairstyling and earrings. Very Bollywood actress at Cannes.
Score: 9.50

4. Miss World France Ophely Mezino--Ophely wore this blush pink colored gown for the Final. The design featured a fit-to-flare gown with a fitted waistband and gathered tulle netting overskirt. The dress had glittering sequin-like detail and very wide horsehair hem trim. She looked DIVINE and very pretty.
Score: 9.35

5. Miss World Vietnam Luong Thuy Ling--Looking quite
stunning in this aqua blue sequined gown designed by Le Thanh Hoa, Miss
World Vietnam looked like a runway model attending a major awards show red
carpet. I loved the design, the cut-outs the skirt side drapes....it looked
spectacular on her.
Score: 9.30

6. Miss World Russia Alina Sanko--Alina looked very Red Carpet-ready in this simple-yet-elegant blue gown with a one-shoulder side drape, sequined bustier and flared skirt. The shape and style were beautiful and non-Pageant Betty...very now, as opposed to 1990's Pageant Tackylicious. Her soft hair and no accessories made her look so on-trend evening right! I also absolutely LOVED the sequined pointy heels (with no platform, thank goodness!).
Score: 9.00
7. See Miss World Jamaica (up top)

8. Miss World Brazil Elis Miele Coelho--Elis wore a soft-pink "Princess"-style gown for the Final of Miss World 2019. The dress featured a semi-plunging neckline, tulle/netting overlay, a fitted upper torso, and a full ball-gown-like skirt. The design had a delicate sequined flower applique and was designed by Flavia Maciel . It was pretty but I have to admit, it seemed almost too "Mother-of-the-Bride/Prom" for her. I wanted a bit more red carpet fabulousness but I get that this is "Miss World" and the contestants tend to favor a more, conservative/traditional lady-like look.
Score: 8.50

9. Miss World Nepal Anushka Shrestha--Anushka wore this one-shoulder red fit-and-flare gown. While the color was impacting and nice for her, and the length was perfect...the fit was a bit too tight. I liked the sequined "print" top but that sweetheart neckline was a bit too mumsy.
Score: 8.40

10. Miss Cook Islands Tajiya Eikura Sahay--Tajiya wore this white fit-and-flare gown with crystal details and jacquard-like fabrication. The white color was impacting for her, and the silhouette was right, it just didn't scream "Fashion Forward" or made her stand out--gown-wise. But it was nice otherwise.
Score: 8.20

11. Miss World Kenya Maria Wavinya--Maria wore this red halter-style ballgown for the Miss World 2019 Final. The color was certainly impacting onstage and she was noticed. I am just not a fan of the feathered and ruffled full skirt. Unless it's done by a major Couturier, like Pierpaolo Piccoli of Valentino. This lacked regalness, finesse or runway chic-ness. She looked very "Miss World Pageant Betty", which maybe was right for this occasion, but for me, not so much.
Score: 8.10
Lastly...

12. Miss World Mexico Ashley Alvidrez--Ashley wore this pink strapless gown. The design featured a folded side drape overskirt that started halfway from the front, a fitted column dress, and silver sequined appliques. It was a bit overwhelming for her, looked a bit like she was trying too much--gown-wise and the Prom-Pink color didn't help. Overall, it was a bit too late 90's Pageant for my taste.
Score: 8.00

CONGRATULATIONS to the new Miss World--Jamaica's Toni-Ann Singh!!!

ICE STYLE.....Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2019 FINALS COSTUMES: PAIRS and ICE DANCE!

Pairs and Ice Dance Grand Prix Costumes--Peng Cheng and Jin Yang of China, Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China; Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada--2019 ISU Grand Prix Finals, Torino Italy
In my previous post HERE , I discussed the LADIES and MEN costumes highlights from the 2019 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Finals . Now it is time to do a recap of the PAIRS and ICE DANCE...
PAIRS:

Aleksandra Bokiova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii Russia Short Program to My Way performed by Frank Sinatra--Boikova and Kozlovskii of Russia wore these costumes skating their Short Program. They featured a pink dress and top for Aleksandra and Dmitrii, with multicolored sequin detail with blue pants for him. They were nice (I liked the beadwork) but not extraordinary; they did look a bit "Junior"-ish.

Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro Canada Short Program to Love On the Brain (Los Feliz Blvd) feat. Bishop Briggs--I liked these pretty costumes worn by Kirsten and Michael. The striped sequin detail on her dress was nice and "jazzy"--she looked sleek and chic. I also liked the sheer/solid panels which mirrored her sequined "stripes" which was a nice way of pairing them together--costume-wise.

Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov Russia Short Program to Je suis malade by Serge Lama and Alica Dona performed by Lara Fabian--Mishina and Galliamov of Russia wore these black and white looks for their Short program. These were nice costumes for the skate and he looked a bit 90's Retro with the skinny white tie, vest and studded trim jeans. Overall, these were effective for their skate; they looked like a romantic couple enjoying the 1994 Lara Fabian song (that's why the 90's look!).

Free Skate to The Master and Margarita (soundtrack) by Igor Kornelyuk--This is a repeat of the music they skated to their Free Skate last season (2018-2019) during their final Junior Season (the music is from a Russian TV miniseries ) their costumes were not a repeat. I liked these designs: The costumes were vibrant, effective and ice-stage impacting. I admit they were a little "Cirque du Soleil" Meets "The Greatest Showman" but that's OK, at least they were giving me something--hopefully helpful in complementing this obscure (to us Westerners) Russian miniseries music.

Peng Cheng and Jin Yang China Short Program to Alegria (from Cirque du Soleil)--This Chinese pair wore these costumes for their Short Program. They did a nice job of meshing the "White" and "Black" "Alegria" costumes from the Cirque du Soleil show. I liked her blush-and-black lace sequin bustier and his very chic black crystal top; if this wasn't a "Cirque du Soleil" theme, they could have easily have worn this for a Madonna-based skate. Notice also the flared out peplums on both his and her tops, resembling the flared-out crinoline shapes of the show's costumes.

Free Skate to Cloud Atlas (soundtrack)--I really liked these costumes from by the Chinese pairs skaters for their Free Skate. The varying shades of blue were beautiful and while I liked his "different" vest/jacket with rhinestone trim, it was Cheng Peng who was the obvious costume STAR! Her dress featured a pale blue chiffon base with deep lilac and silver paillettes and sequined applique, along with a silver sequin "belt". The design was gorgeous, expensive-looking and effective for the skate...

Her look reminded me of a design Lebanese Couturier Elie Saab (photo above).

Sui Wenjing and Han Cong China Free Skate to Rain, In Your Black Eyes by Ezio Bossio--Sui and Han wore these very impressive costumes for their equally impressive Free Skate. She wore a dark hunter green costume featuring a plunging neckline, nude illusion front panel and beautiful sequins across the torso reminiscent of a star-filled night sky. It was simple, elegant, and quite chic. I also liked his look which included a blue band-collar shirt, black pants, and wonderful across-the-chest sequined "straps" that looked like a "holster". It made his ensemble look modern, stylish and tied himself in with her sequined costume.
ICE DANCE:

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier Canada Rhythm Dance to Movies Were Movies (from "Mack and Mabel") by Jerry Herman, Look What Happened to Mabel (from "Mack and Mabel") by Jerry Herman, and Entr'acte, Tap Your Troubles Away (from "Mack and Mabel") by Jerry Herman--I loved these very impacting costumes, ready for the stage (or ice!), worn by Canada's Gilles and Poirier for their homage to "Old Hollywood". The old-school costume-y tuxedos were so Radio City Rockettes Glam with the silver, bubblegum pink, sequin and fringe details.

Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue USA Rhythm Dance to My Heart Belongs to Daddy by Cole Porter performed by Marilyn Monroe and Let's Be Bad (from "Smash") by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman--Madison vibed her best Marilyn Monroe look in this cowl-draped red sequined dress, looking very Old Hollywood and Zachary looked handsome as her Joe DiMaggio Baseball Player husband in his striped jersey and blue pants. Very cute and visually fun. This is a costume change from earlier this season....

Which do you like better?? I feel the new costumes project a stronger theme and tell the story in a stronger way.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates USA Rhythm Dance to Too Darn Hot by Cole Porter (original cast recording)--Chock and Bates wore these costumes bringing vivid memories of Hollywood icon Ann Miller in "Kiss Me Kate", especially in Madison's fuchsia pink fringed design. I thought it was fun, flashy and an obvious homage to Walter Plunkett's costumes for the 1953 film. And Evan looked sharp in his open-collar tuxedo outfit.

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizero France Rhythm Dance to I Can Do Anything Better Than You Can by S. Linzer & D. Wolfert (arrang. by Maxime Rodriguez) from "Fame" by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchsord, Fame by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchsford (arranged by Maxime Rodriguez and Ludivine Amado) and Fame by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchsford, performed by Irene Cara--Naturally, these 80's Jazzercize looks were probably my FAVORITE "costumes" from this season's Rhythm dance. Only this fab French Ice Dance duo can pull off ice dancing to "Fame" complete with leotards, headbands, and legwarmers in such a flawless manner that no one, absolutely NO ONE, batted an eyelash! It was fab cheesy, disco-licious and Retro Chic, all at the same time. They left me in a sweat...after watching them!

Free Dance to Danny and Suspects by Olafur Arnalds and Find Me by Forest Black--Skating to the gorgeous music from the British TV drama "Broadchurch" and a spoken word poem, Papadakis and Cizeron took Ice Dance to an even higher level. Their simple, modern dance-like costumes mirrored the music and choreography beautifully and seamlessly; the sheer vs. solid all-black looks were directional and almost became invisible within their incredible skating. I also liked the addition of the silver foil "splashes" on their costumes, which gave a nice contrasting touch to their otherwise all-black designs.

ICE STYLE.....Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2019 FINALS COSTUMES: LADIES and MEN!

Finals Costumes--Ladies and Men Skaters at ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2019 Finals (L to R) Alina Zagitova of Russia, Anna Shcherbakova of Russia, Alena Kostornaia of Russia, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and Nathan Chen of USA--2019 Grand Prix Finals, Torino Italy
Last weekend was the Finals of the 2019-2020 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating , which took place in Torino Italy. This is the grand culmination of all the previous Grand Prix competition events which took place with all the top-scoring skaters competing for the highest of spots. Throughout this season, I have covered most of these costumes but don't mind recapping them here once again. There were a couple of Costume Changes--if you could actually deem them "Costumes" (Hello Nathan Chen!) so without further ado...let's start with the LADIES and MEN, first up...
THE LADIES:

Bradie Tennell USA Short Program to Mechanisms and Chronos by Kirill Richter--Bradie skated her Short program wearing this red costume. The design featured a sequined covered nude illusion "plunging neckline" front, long sleeves and short skirt, all accented with a diamante thin belt. It looked sinuous and modern and devoid of any unnecessary costume fluff, making Bradie look sleeker than ever!

Rika Kihira Japan Short Program to Breakfast in Baghdad by Ulf Wakenius performed by Youn Sun Nah--Japan's Rika Kihira wore this red sequined costume. I liked the design and black ombre dye effect under the silver rhinestones, as well as the delicately asymmetrical skirt. The look was a bit "Vampira" but the red and black coloring was impacting, especially against her porcelain-like skin. She changed the costume she had been wearing at previous competition events and started wearing this red one at the NHK Trophy 2019.

Alexandra Trusova Russia Free Skate to Pray (High Valyrian) (from “Game of Thrones” soundtrack) by Matthew Bellamy, The Night King (from “Game of Thrones” soundtrack) by Ramin Djawadi--For her Free Skate to "Game of Thrones" music, she wore this costume. I think she was trying to vibe Daenarys "Khaleesi" Mother of Dragon's Season 3 costume, with the blue color and gray-ish tights. I get it, it was a nice attempt but it still looked a bit "Junior"-like (she is only FIFTEEN after all). I am not a fan of the sheer "leggings" but I give the costume designer points for trying to mimic the "striped" look in her costume to match the famous fur coat worn by the show's "Daenarys" character.

Anna Shcherbakova Russia Short Program to The Girl with the Plums, Meeting Laura, and Laura's Murder (from “The Perfume” soundtrack)--For her Short program, Anna wore this deep ombre dyed gray dress featuring sequined applique in the torso. While it was "Romantic Dark" and a bit "Nightshade Fairy" in its design, all that detail in the front torso looked a bit messy and jumbled, especially for her delicate body.

Free Skate to Six Gnossiennes: Gnossienne No.1 by Eric Satie, performed by Roland Pontinen
The Firebird by Igor Stravinski--Anna started the skate in the lilac costume on the left above and then, she did a tug at her neck and voila: NEW COSTUME! While I really was not a fan of the lilac halter neck look, in the beginning, she Costume-redeemed herself when the "Firebird" dress that took over. The red feather-like sequined applique-over-nude-illusion-body-suit-with-red-skirt was eye-catching and impacting. I liked that it was a definite change from what she had worn in the first half. Was it kind of cheesy--the halfway-through-the-skate costume change? Yes, but I liked it.

Alina Zagitova Russia Short Program to Me Voy by Yasmin Levy--Russia's Olympian Alina Zagitova was vibing the Spanish flamenco theme with this black lace and sequined costume. I wasn't overly moved by this look; to be honest, it seemed a bit "old" and rather uninspiring for her. All that lace and darkness reminded me of the black lace Mantillas the widows wear to their husband's funerals. The one word that comes to mind is "Bland". It seems she was saving her "Ta-Da!" Costume for her free Skate...

Free Skate to The Feeling Begins by Peter Gabriel, Lawrence Of Arabia by Maurice Jarre and Ramses by Khatir Hicham--With a Middle East-themed soundtrack ranging from "The Last Temptation of Christ" to "Lawrence of Arabia" to Egypt, we arrive at this fabulous costume worn by Zagitova. After a rather dull Short Program design, I was very happy to see this for sure. I loved the one-shoulder black-draped design with sequined nude illusion and in particular, the turquoise jeweled "Cleopatra"-like wings at the bust. Oh, and then those incredible details like the necklace, shoulder epaulets, snake wrist accents, and gold paillettes used as eye makeup were fabulous.

Alena Kostornaia Russia Free Skate to The Meadow (from "New Moon" soundtrack) by Alexandre Desplat, Eyes on Fire (from "Twilight" soundtrack) by Blue Foundation and Supermassive Black Hole by Muse--For her Gold medal-winning Free Skate (she had the highest Short program score as well as overall Total Score), Alena wore a costume featuring a purple base, sweetheart neckline, black accents, silver rhinestones, and red blood-like sequin accents. I liked the not-so-subtle homage to the "Twilight" movies' vampire theme and the subtle details such as those gloves; she looked pretty yet slightly deadly. I especially liked the neckline's sequined "fangs" motif.
MEN:

Alexander Samarin Russia Short Program to Blues for Klook by Eddy Louiss--Samarin wore this indigo-blue colored solid/sheer shirt and matching dark blue pants for his Short Program. It matched the "Blues" inspiration of his music for sure and he did look like a band member of a cool blues band. While it wasn't making any real fab costume waves, it was clean, sharp and fit him well.

Dmitri Aliev Russia Short Program to Je Dors Sur Des Roses (from "Mozart L'Opera Rock) by Mikelangelo Loconte--Dmitri wore this costume consisting of a wine-red velvet long vest with embroidered lapels, see-through black shirt, and black pants. It was "Mozart"-y I guess and it fits him nicely but as far as an overall design, it was a bit off-the-rack from a Skating Shop.

Kevin Aymoz France Short Program to The Question Of U by Prince--Naturally, if you are skating to Prince, you wear PURPLE! And Kevin did, as seen from the purple sequined and Lycra top underneath. Oh, and he also wore black pants with a black belt. I have to say there are more creative ways of honoring Prince than this so I wasn't a big fan of this "costume". He looked like he went to a Caribbean Cruise and found out it was a Prince Karaoke tribute night and then bought this at the ship's souvenir shop.

Nathan Chen USA Short Program La Boheme performed by Charles Aznavour--Nathan skated his Short Program to the music of Armenian-French singer Charles Aznavour. This was a costume change from what he had been wearing at previous Grand Prix competition events this season (the I'm-a-Waiter-at-a-Wedding Shirt/Vest/Red Pocket Hankie Look)...

The new "costume" involved a grey/lilac-colored tie-dye long sleeve stretch top with a black-and-white ribbed neck and black pants. While it was more modern "sportif", it fell short of adding any nice visual costume "candy" to his skate and let's be honest, had nothing to do with the iconic French chanson he skated to.
Nathan also changed his costume for his Free Skate...

Free Skate to Music from "Rocketman": Goodbye Yellowbrick Road by Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell; Rocketman by Taron Egerton and Benny and the Jets by Logic, Elton John and Pink--For his Free Skate to "Rocketman", Nathan changed from a psychedelic, multicolored tie-dye stretch shirt to...a yellow-and-white tie-dye stretch shirt. It was obviously made by the same people who did his Short Program costume and maybe were under A) Budgetary or B) Time constraints and decided to just cut the same style top but in a different fabric. He looked like an extra in a vintage "Star Trek" episode. It looked sloppy and the unfitted style was distracting as it flopped around during the skate. On a good note: At least it was YELLOW, honoring the Elton John "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" music. But, in case you didn't understand my review: I wasn't a fan.

Yuzuru Hanyu Japan Short Program to Otonal by Raul di Blasio--Yuzuru Hanyu rehashed his same Short Program music from last season for this 2019-2010 season. I liked this season's costume with its jaggedy edges and beautiful rhinestones. It all makes for a striking design on the torso, giving a "Snow King" effect, like stylish icicles. My only critique is those necklaces...As much as he likes wearing them--as "lucky charms", for sponsorship or health as some messageboards say HERE --but they distract from the neckline of the costume as a whole.

Free Skate to Origin ("Art on Ice") by Edvin Marton--This was a STUNNING costume worn by Yuzuru Hanyu for his Free Skate. The subtle purple shading, the beautiful gold curved rhinestone design, the juxtaposition of the solid vs. the sheer, the 3D effect of the applique...all details that add up to a very Couture-like design that is right for such a Couture-like figure skater.
