My Writing Goal for 2013: not writing half a million words with a newborn

I was in a chat with my NaNoWriMo gang this past November when my buddy Rich started asking me if I’d be aiming for 500,000 words again in 2013. I started to hem and haw about how I hadn’t decided yet, what with not knowing what it would be like with a new baby and all, and then our other buddyChris popped into the chat and was all, “What are you guys talking about?” and Rich was like, “Hillary isn’t going to try to write half a million words this year with a newborn baby” and Chris was all,...

2012 Writing Goals Debriefed: Did I succeed in writing 500,000 words as planned?

In 2011, I fell short of my writing goal. My goal was 500,000 words and I only wrote392,074. But I decided to keep that 500,000 goal for 2012 because I’ve been steadily trying to ramp up how much I write with the ultimate goal of 1 million words a yearand I hadn’t been that far off.

But, as discussed, 2012 threw a ton of curve balls at me. So, you’re wondering, how close did I get to that 500,000 words?

218,638 words. Only 43% of my goal.

I was going to write “hangs head in shame” here but, you...

2012 in Review (in which I had a baby & neglected to tell the internet about it)

Merry Christmas Baby (album)

Merry Christmas Baby (album) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This year kicked my butt in a lot of huge ways but I hesitate to call 2012 a bad year. It was weird, challenging, and taxing, sure, but we were incredibly fortunate that everything bad that happened ultimately worked out for the best.

For instance…

When two of the people closest to me each got a scary medicaldiagnosis followed by scary surgery, both not only came out of it fine and made quick recoveries but also discovered the danger hadn’t...

The Love of Three Oranges in the wild! A tweet from a princess dove.

I’ve mentioned before how truly awesome it is to be a writer in this digital age and see your fans and readers talking about your book or play in real time. Well, look what I found on Twitter:

Talk about a tweet! (I blotted out all the identifying details because the Twitter user was underage.)

If you can’t make it out, it’s a tweet and photo from an actress in an upcoming school production of The Love of Three Oranges showing off both her script (with Princess Ninetta’s lines highlighted) and...

What it’s like working with me & performing The Love of Three Oranges

I don’t have a lot ofoccasionto look at the Amazon page for The Love of Three Oranges since copies are no longer sold there. When I did happen to glance at it recently (mostly because I was trying to figure out how people get off selling copies for $300+ when they are much less over on Playscripts) I noticed this really wonderful review I’d never seen before.

I think this is the only review that’s been written on Amazon since the play was released through Playscripts and it’s interesting to he...
