In which Summer is over before it began

My mother rounds up.

“You better finish your homework. It’s already 9 o’clock!” she’s say and a glance at the clock would reveal that it was actually only 8:15. You can say that she was trying to trick us but I’ve seen it happen in too many situations to believe that is so. Oddly enough, she’s amazing at estimating the time down to the quarter hour if she’s going by the position of the sun but if she’s actually looking at a clock, she’s going to round to the next hour no matter how few minutes...

The Love of Three Oranges: just your typical “fairy tale on crack”

I don’t share every review of The Love of Three Oranges because there are just too many of them but, every now and then, one catches my eye and this one by Margaret McNamara may be my new favorite. It’s just peppered with jokes and references from the show and is a review of The Episcopal Academy’s Cappies winning production of The Love of Three Oranges.

You can read the original here but below are some of my favorite parts:

When am I going to write a follow-up to The Love of Three Oranges, you ask?

Sequel (album)

Sequel (album) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Back in this post, I mused about the nature of sequels in the theatre and when, if ever, do they work. Believe it or not, thiswasn’tjust a random rant. It’s actually somethingI’vebeen struggling with several years now.

See, in my play, The Love of Three Oranges, there’s a part at the end where the villains are excited theyweren’tkilled because it means they could come back for the sequel. This was, pure and simple, a joke. But after the show opened, peop...

Reviewers say, consider The Love of Three Oranges, even though you’ve never heard of it

Someone brought this great review of The Love of Three Oranges to my attention and, while the whole thing is both raving and well written, I especially loved the last line from the reviewer:

“The Episcopal Academy Domino Club proved that audiences shouldn’t approach lesser known shows with doubt or trepidation. Their performance of The Love of Three Oranges was truly a citrusy success!” -Rachel Horner

First of all, what a thrill for me to have a revi...

Why aren’t there more stage plays with sequels and prequels?

Cover of Grease 2

I’m not going to lie to you guys, I wrote a sequel to Guys and Dolls in high school. It will never see the light of day because it’s terrible but I wrote it because I wanted to see more of those characters and see where they ended up after the curtain fell. I guess that was my one and only brush with fan fiction. But it brings up an interesting discussion.

Sequels and prequels are big business at the movies and a series is the secret to success when it comes to books and video...
