Character Interview: Nathaniel Grey and the Obsidian Crown by Farrell Keeling
Today’s character interview is from the YA Fantasy novel Nathaniel Grey and the Obsidian Crown by Farrell Keeling. It was self-published by the author on the 20th of July 2019 and is currently available as a paperback, ISBN-13: 978-1097136490 and an e-Book, ASIN: B07VDZ7W6B.
Synopsis of Nathaniel Grey and the Obsidian Crown by Farrell Keeling
It’s been over half a century since the Phoenix rose in the City of Light. Accused of grave crimes against the Obsidian Throne, Nathaniel Grey is cast out of Obsidia and forced to seek refuge with his peoples’ sworn enemies, the Lycans. With the Szar and Necromancers plotting in the shadows, Nathaniel must mount a swift return to his homeland before war breaks out between the Regals and Lycans. Whoever bears the Obsidian Crown, shall hold the fate of Horizon in their hands…
Name of character to be interviewed: Nathaniel Grey
Why was this character chosen for this interview?:
Nathaniel Grey is the main character of the second instalment of the Phoenix Saga. Though the first book, which acts a sort of prologue to the series, follows Nathaniel’s grandfather as a child, Nathaniel will be the titular character for the rest of the series.
Question 1: Why did you decide to move the focus of the saga from Thorne to Nathaniel Grey?
Answer: It was a tough decision. Ultimately, I felt that the series would be better served by moving further down the timeline. The character known as Crow played a pivotal role in this as well (every protaganist needs a foil of sorts). In Obsidian Crown, Crow is now an adult, experienced in the arts of Necromancy, and thus a dangerous threat to Nathaniel. Importantly, I feel that Nathaniel’s ‘origin story’ is quite interesting, pitting his loyalties to the throne against the prejudices of his people.
Question 2: What does this mean for Thorne Grey? Has the series moved on without him?
Answer: Thorne Grey will always occupy a space in my heart and, I’m pleased to say, within Obsidian Crown. He may not be the main character, but he still plays a pretty essential role in terms of driving the story and guiding Nathaniel’s development. A kind of Ben Kenobi role, if you will.
Question 3: City of Darkness ended with Thorne Grey choosing not to become the next Phoenix. What does this mean for Nathaniel?
Answer: It would be strange if the mystical ‘Phoenix’ power was to be abandoned completely after the first book. I’d have to consider renaming the entire series! As for whether Thorne’s choice will affect Nathaniel in any way, well… you’ll have to read the book to find out! What I will say is this: prepare for one hell of a ride in Obsidian Crown’s last chapter.
Question 4: What kind of flaws does Nathaniel have to contend with?
Answer: The main flaw, I would argue, is shared with his people – the Regals. The Regals are hugely prejudiced against the Lycans (a faction now led by Nathaniel’s grandfather, Thorne Grey). It all comes to a head early in Obsidian Crown, after it is revealed that the Regal emperor, Jael Tolken, is looking to end years of tensions between Regals and Lycans, by seeking a peaceful alliance. Not everyone is happy about Jael’s decision, least of all the Szar, Draeden Kusk.
Question 5: Were there any characters from other books that inspired Nathaniel Grey?
Answer: I think any character an author produces will ultimately be the sum of their reading history and life experiences. If I was put on the spot, I’d probably say that Nathaniel shared some traits with Rand Al-Thor, one of the main characters of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Their paths do diverge to a certain extent, though, they are marked by different tragedies.

Sunday Snippet: The Wind Is My Mother; The Life and Teachings of A Native American Shaman
Today’s Sunday Snippet is from the Native American Religions book The Wind Is My Mother; The Life and Teachings of A Native American Shaman by Bear Heart and Molly Larkin. It is a 272 page book published by Berkley Publishing Group; Reprint edition (1 Feb. 1998). It is currently available as a hardcover, paperback, audio book and audio CD.
Synopsis
With eloquent simplicity, Bear Heart, a full-blooded and traditionally trained healer of the Muskogee Creek tribe, shares a lifetime of training. In sections titled “The Cure Lies Within You” and “Learning How To Live,” Bear Heart weaves together anecdotes and philosophy to show how traditional tribal wisdom can help us maintain mental, spiritual and physical health in today’s world. We journey with him from his initiation into the Muskogee Creek’s “medicine ways” in 1938 (when he walked unharmed through a den of rattlesnakes) to his role as a respected elder and counselor whose gentle words spring from a lifetime of service. He describes the lessons learned in ceremonies conducted in the sweat lodge and the Native American Church; he explains why Native people pray with peyote and smoke the Sacred Pipe and how vision quests can bring clarity and personal revelation. Throughout, Bear Heart’s teachings stress the importance of self-knowledge, integrity, and being open to the guidance of the Great Spirit. Through inspiring stories and examples, he teaches us how to live.
Molly Larkin’s Introduction to The Wind Is My Mother; The Life and Teachings of a Native American Shaman
In 1987, I was ready to die. In a twelve month period, I lost my business to an unscrupulous partner, filed for personal bankruptcy, my lover committed suicide and, after rebounding into a relationship with an old boyfriend, I was left for a nineteen-year old receptionist. My life was at its darkest point, and I had gone so far as to make a plan to end it. Then I met Bear Heart.
His words gave me hope, and my work with him since then has dramatically changed my life. It seemed only natural that a book on his teachings could inspire countless others just as he has helped and inspired me.
Looking back, I see my life as one long spiritual quest. My journey began with my wanting to be a nun in the eighth grade and changed course as I declared myself an atheist by my senior year of high school. In college I experimented with drugs and followed that with twelve years of practicing meditation — two of them in an ashram. But neither chemicals nor Eastern religion brought me real peace of mind.
I gradually noticed, however, that when I was out in nature I felt a sense of serenity that years of struggling with meditation never gave me. Since Native American “religion” is based on a relationship with the earth and all living things, finding a Native American teacher willing to work with non-Indians — with me — seemed the clearest answer to finding peace and balance in my life.
Not long after my search for a Native teacher began, I met Cougar, a man of both white and Native American heritage, who I came to love very deeply. His suicide in March of 1987 was a devastating blow to me but, as is often the case with life’s tragedies, it proved to be a significant turning point in my life. Three weeks after Cougar’s death, I traveled to Washington state for his memorial service and it was there that I met Bear Heart. Many people were there grieving for Cougar, yet Bear Heart consoled them all with great warmth, depth, humor and compassion — his ability to lift up our spirits seemed boundless.
Within a few months after I returned home to California, Bear Heart came to Los Angeles to conduct ceremonies and workshops. I attended them all and a friend, knowing of my deep depression, suggested I meet privately with him. I had no idea of what to expect, but something inside — perhaps intuition, or simply desperation — told me it would be a good idea.
I spoke with Bear Heart about the past year and of my thoughts about wanting to end my life. During the thirty minutes I spent with him, he said one thing I’ll never forget: “There are many kinds of death. It isn’t necessary to leave the physical body in order to let a part of you die that doesn’t serve you any longer. When you allow that to happen, you can be reborn into a new and better life.”

Review of the product that made our 2019 summer holiday extra special
The heatwave we had this summer was never going to last but it was great having a really hot summer for a change. My little girl really enjoyed herself with an even more active social life than I do. There were birthday parties to pool parties to BBQs to even a road trip to Wales. I cannot think of anything else a little girl would want. Now that September is here and the myriad of activities have stopped, for the time being, I thought this would be a great time to write a review of the product that made our 2019 summer holiday extra special. What product is this you may ask? Well it is none other than the POW Mo
EXPANDABLE WIRELESS SPEAKER + UNIVERSAL MOUNT & WALLET which was gifted to me.
What is the POW Mo
EXPANDABLE WIRELESS SPEAKER + UNIVERSAL MOUNT?According to the manufacturer, the POW Mo
is the first release in their lineup of WaveBloom
enhanced speakers. It is a pocket-sized speaker that delivers dynamic sound that rivals bigger, bulkier speakers. You can unleash its power in the comfort of home after a long day, or bring it with you to amplify your weekend dance party.
With its unique magnetic design, you can attach your POW Mo
speaker to your smartphone, a fridge, the body of your car and more. POW magnets will not interfere with wireless charging or your phone’s performance.
POW Mo
is compatible with just about any Bluetooth enabled sound source device, including Apple® and Android
smartphones, tablets and more.
DIMENSIONS
Length: 4.375″ (11.11 cm), Width: 2.5″ (6.35 cm), Height (collapsed): 0.937″ (2.38 cm)
WEIGHT
7oz (198.45 g)
FEATURES
Stereo Sync
Up to 8-Hour Playtime
Water-Resistant
UV Stable
Bluetooth 4.2
100 Foot Range
USB-C Charging
How did I use the POW Mo
EXPANDABLE WIRELESS SPEAKER over our 2019 summer holiday?Whilst having our own summer BBQ at home, I thought it was the perfect time to use the POW Mo
speaker for the first time. Whenever I put my android phone on speaker in the garden previously, the sound did not carry enough for us to truly enjoy the song that was being played. So I was eager to see if this speaker would make any difference.
Pros of the POW Mo
speakerPOW Mo
speaker came with a USB cable which I connected to a wall charger head and was fully charged in less than 2 hoursIt was pretty straightforward to connect the POW Mo
speaker to my android phone via Bluetooth. After you connect the POW Mo
speaker to your device the first time, you don’t need to do so ever again. Simply activate Bluetooth on your device, turn on your POW Mo
speaker and voila it connects automatically and plays a welcome message. This little speaker should NOT be underestimated for even one second. Just thinking about the POW Mo
speaker is giving me goosebumps. The clarity of the sound is out of this world (when compared to my android phone speakers). When I used it, it sounded like I had a large surround sound system. It even has that thumping sound you would get from proper speakers. Seriously, my review cannot do this speaker justice. My POW Mo
speaker is on my fridge, so it takes up ZERO valuable space. After the first charge, I didn’t use the POW Mo
speaker for about a week. When I turned it on, there was still enough charge to last the 30 minutes I used it with no sign that the built-in battery was about to run out
Cons of the POW Mo
speakerIt did not come with a wall charger
I’ve not been able to figure out how to use the POW WALLET or rather I don’t know what it’s for. There were two of them included in the box
There’s no battery life indicator
I found it impossible to expand the speaker, so can’t comment on if it enhances the sound
CONCLUSION
If you do not already have regular speakers at home or you are considering a buying a new one, I totally recommend you give the POW Mo
speaker a try. Having this speaker has made doing housework enjoyable. I give this POW Mo
speaker 9/10. I have never received a gift that gave me goosebumps before.
What did you do over the 2019 summer holiday? What do you think of my review of the POW Mo
speaker? Please leave a comment below

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs That Make You Stand in Your Own Way to Becoming a Millionaire
Today’s blog post about overcoming limiting beliefs is a guest post written by H. J. Chammas following his recent appearance on my podcast The Segilola Salami Show. H. J. shares with us some limiting beliefs and how we can overcome them on our journey to financial freedom.
H. J. Chammas’ childhood
When I was a teenager, I always used to wonder why my parents were so adamant about their children seeking higher education so that they would get a secure, high-paying job. My parents themselves have spent their adult lives as employees going through the ups and downs of the employee life. They were at times put out of their jobs and then forced to pay for less paying and less rewarding jobs. They worked very hard for money to provide the best they can for their family. When they retired, they woke up to the realisation that neither their previous employer nor the government will look after them. My parent retired broke, and luckily enough I had the means to take care of their needs when they were out of money after their legal retirement age.
Back then during my childhood, I observed that the parents of my wealthy classmates did things quite differently from the route my parents selected for themselves. When I used to visit their houses for play days, even as a young child, it was obvious to me that my wealthy classmates’ lifestyle was quite far from the lifestyle our family was enjoying … or not enjoying!
When I grew a bit more mature, I automatically fell into the same “life programming,” and as soon as I graduated, I started my career in the corporate world. I found myself trapped in the rat race, running from one pay check to the next. My corporate life allowed me great exposure to working with my colleagues from the different corners of the world. I also have worked as an expatriate in different countries for almost 17 years. I realised that almost all my work colleagues, irrespective of where they fall on the corporate ladder, irrespective in which country they live and work in, all had accepted their fate and were trying to make the most out of the life program that their parents handed over to them.
In overcoming limiting beliefs, first review your financial situation
When I started my wealth-building journey, my starting point was taking a proper inventory of my financial situation. When I had a look at my first ever personal financial statement, dozens of questions and ideas came to my mind. In some instances, I comforted myself with some irrational justifications about my financial ruin. It was like covering a bad story with another bad story. Finally, I had to face reality and objectively analyse what brought me to this situation. During this same time, I looked at Forbes’s list of billionaires and started to ask myself questions about how those billionaires and other wealthy people attract money like a magnet, whereas people like me and my fellow colleagues, employees in general, seem to repel it.
Being determined to discover the answers, I talked to dozens of people, including ones who were poor, middle class, well off, and wealthy. As I met people who were low-, medium-, and high-paid employees, self-employed, investors, and business owners, I began to notice that people who depend on earned income, irrespective of their income level, have much in common. On the other hand, people who have acquired multiple streams of income from their income-producing assets also share a lot in common. The difference between those classes was astonishing.
How does the beliefs of a wealth builder differ to that of an income earner?
People who have accumulated wealth have let go of an incredible number of misconceptions and limiting beliefs. In fact, the wealthy have managed to subscribe to a new set of empowering beliefs that contradict what the majority of the population still hangs onto.
It appears as if we are all programmed to believe in a set of false assumptions that become limiting beliefs. Too often the poor and the middle class hold tightly to a set of limiting beliefs about money and investing. Meanwhile, those same beliefs hold them captive and prevent them from achieving financial freedom.
When I first looked at my personal financial statement, I had the same set of limiting beliefs. It was only when I understood how those beliefs were enslaving me to a state of financial ruin that I managed to let go of them. I had to understand the personal truth about my negative thoughts in order to overcome them and replace them with empowering beliefs.
After going through those beliefs, you will see how the poor and middle class look at them differently—actually in opposite ways. The poor and the middle class have adopted limiting personal beliefs, whereas the wealthy have adopted empowering personal beliefs. You’ll never embark on the road to wealth if you let such negative thoughts constrain you.
The poor and the middle class will most probably remain in the same financial situation if they conjure up any number of excuses for not choosing wealth—excuses that say more about their inner thoughts than about the difficulty of achieving wealth.
In overcoming limiting beliefs, you need to unearth your personal truths
If you’re embracing negative thoughts, you need to understand what they really mean. It’s time to dig deep and unearth your personal truths. Jot down negative statements you whisper to yourself, and, after some honest soul searching, record the personal truth that lies beneath each. Once you become honest with yourself and accept that those beliefs are limited only to the extent you allow them to be, you will experience a transformation of those beliefs into empowering ones. Self-awareness is critical in this transformation. Before you change your life, you need to change your mind. Your thoughts and beliefs are deeply entrenched, so deeply rooted that you may not even be aware of how much they’ve impacted your financial situation.
Below is a selection of those limiting beliefs. For a complete list of all the limiting beliefs and the respective strategies to transform them into empowering beliefs, I am offering 2 free ebooks, which will put you on the right track to start building wealth and achieve financial freedom:
The 4 Stage of Building Wealth: www.employeemillionaire.com/the4stages
Break Out of Your 9-5 Job: www.employeemillionaire.com/breakout
Limiting Belief 1: A job provides financial security for now and at retirement
Almost all of the poor and middle class were programmed to graduate from school to seek a high-paying job that would provide them security and eventually lead them to wealth. This might hold true for CEOs and other corporate executives with hefty pay cheques.
But to the majority of employees, this remains a dream they chase until one day they retire, only to be surprised by a bank account and pension plan that can barely sustain their lifestyle for a few weeks or months. Then reality kicks in—when it is too late. The fact of the matter is that a job, for the majority of us, merely supports the basics of life, the essential expenses.
The drug that keeps all employees addicted to their job is seeing their income increasing from the day they start working till the prime of their income-earning years. This false evidence of prosperity leads to a false feeling of security. As a result, more and more of their income gets channeled to discretionary expenses, and those who can afford it start to spend on the appearances of wealth. One day their income starts to go downhill, and like a drug addict who cannot have the same high doses of drug anymore, they wake up to the fact that this fantasy is over and that they have to cut down on their expenses. The few exceptions will be corporate executives, who are only a minority of the general population.
I encourage you to start looking at your job in a different way. Consider it as a form leverage that acts in your favor. It is about having your job work smarter for you while you work hard for your job. It’s a win-win term.
“The Employee Millionaire” program
The objective of “The Employee Millionaire” program is to enable you to leverage your position as an employee to qualify for bank loans (good debt) to purchase income-producing assets that will generate unearned income in excess of your monthly expenses and therefore put you on the road to being wealthy.
As you may know, banks generate profits from lending money to people. The interest they charge the borrowers is the bank’s income. Banks like to lend money to creditworthy people. They want reasonable reassurance that borrowers have steady incomes that will enable them to repay their loans. Banks will look at the length of time the borrowers were in their current jobs as their reassurance of steady income. The first step of the wealth building process is to take advantage of the fact that you have a steady income that qualifies you for a loan that you can take to purchase income-producing assets.
Limiting Belief 5: Failure is bad, and mistakes are a reflection of my incompetence
Most of us fear failure and mistakes, which is no surprise. Throughout our years at school and university, failing an exam resulted in a feeling of shame and incompetence. Even in most of our life as employees, failure to deliver on our objectives will eventually lead to a bad performance evaluation, and in extreme cases the door will be wide open for us to leave our job.
Some mature companies accept failure as part of the learning curve of their employees, but those failures need never be experienced more than once, and they should not lead to a major financial loss. In other words, those mature companies are projecting an image of a culture that welcomes failure as part of a learning organization. But when the shit hits the fan, the employee who made a mistake will be looking for a new job in a new company sooner rather than later.
In my professional life as an employee, I used to fear making large mistakes. But in my professional life as an investor, I have made rather large mistakes and realized that failure is an integral part of my success. When I learned how to convert “fear of failure” into “opportunity of failure”, I developed creativity, flexibility, agility, and the ability to explore new ways of achieving my goals.
In fact, the biggest mistakes I have made in my investment life have taught me lessons not only about how to avoid them in the future. The solutions to those mistakes have taught me more important lessons about how my how-to can become more rigid and can deliver better results.
When you fail in an important endeavour, you affiliate yourself with some of the most famous people in the world. I am confident you know two famous quotes from Thomas A. Edison, known as America’s greatest inventor. One quote is “I have not failed. I’ve just found ten thousand ways that won’t work”, and the other one goes “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”. The moral of the story is that you fail only when you give up.
Another impressive story is that of Abraham Lincoln, who served as the sixteenth president of the United States. After facing several failures, such as losing his job, failing in business, having a nervous breakdown, being defeated for speaker of the house, being defeated for nomination in Congress, being defeated for the US Senate, and being defeated for nomination for vice president, he overcame each of them as it was time for a better outcome, and was eventually elected president. He is also famous for saying “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other”. What those great achievers taught us is that determination for success will keep us going and trying again and again until we succeed. Who we become in the process becomes as important as success itself.
In summary, I encourage you to start “learning to learn” by learning to unlearn in order learn again and again.
Limiting Belief 6: It takes money to make money
A common objection I often hear from starting investors is … “it takes money to make money”.
Indeed, it takes money to make money, but who said it has to be your money? In an earlier article, I have shared one of the best lesson my mentor, Papa Joe, ever taught me: “The road to wealth is good debt”. Check out this article, it has explained in depth the principles of borrowing and leverage to create wealth.
The reality is a large amount of money is required for investment in assets such as rental properties. Most of us do limit our own selves with thoughts such as: “I can never save that amount of money!” … So, we end up spending our hard-earned money on discretionary expenses.
It is only through the wise use of good debt that returns can reach high double digits. In the best scenario—when you don’t use a single dollar from your own money to purchase income-producing assets—your returns can be infinite.
I invite you to transform this limiting belief into an empowering one – Indeed, it takes money to make money, but who said it has to be my money?
With this kind of thoughts, you will start he road to wealth is good debt. I will become as rich as the amount of good debt I take in my life. I shall begin managing my expenses to save money and eventually invest it and use leverage to accelerate my returns on investment.
Limiting Belief 11: All the good investments are taken. Only the mediocre and bad investments are left over to the small investors
Most unknowledgeable people are cynical about investment. They often claim that all good investments are taken and that only the mediocre and bad investments are left over for small investors.
Savvy investors wouldn’t miss opportunities to make good investments. Why can’t you join the league of those investors? In fact, the marketplace is a dynamic place, with economic forces and personal forces always at work, generating a continuous flow of investment opportunities.
Economic forces such as interest rates, employment rates, population growth, population shifts, and area developments all have major impact on the market. As a result, prices of properties might be driven up or down. Such economic forces are big and are on the news to an extent that they may often mask the impact of personal forces in putting opportunities in the market.
For example, personal situations like marriage, divorce, increase in the size of a household, relocation, death, inability to pay a mortgage, and family disputes over inheritance all present opportunities in the market. Those personal forces present more opportunities at discounted prices just because those people want to get rid of a property for personal reasons sooner rather than later. Such personal factors have always been there and will always remain there.

Character Interview: A Family Reunion by KM Beirne
Today’s character interview is from the Fantasy novel A Family Reunion by KM Beirne. It is a 227 paged novel that was independently published by the author on the 10th of March 2019. A Family Reunion by KM Beirne is currently available as an ebook, ISBN-10: 1799281434 and a paperback ISBN-13: 978-1799281436.
Synopsis of A Family Reunion by KM Beirne
Gail has never felt accepted at work, nor indeed, has she ever felt truly accepted in this world. Will an unexpected encounter with some unusual strangers explain this feeling? Who are the emerald-eyed duo in pursuit, and what do they want from her? A mystical adventure could be about to explain all, but she might have to give up more than she could have possibly imagined and things will never be the same again.
Name of character to be interviewed: Gail Stormhaven
Why was this character chosen for this interview?: Gail is the female protagonist in ‘A Family Reunion’. She is definitely not your average office worker, hiding a secret that not even she is aware of that drags her into the world of demons, magic and tyranny.
Question 1: If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you and why?
Answer: I would love someone like a young Milla Jovovich to play me as she usually plays interesting science fiction characters who have a good balance of empathy and kick-ass. Plus she looks awesome whist she’s taking down a monster or two!
Question 2: Who has been the most interesting person you have met on this adventure?
Answer: Hmm…my favourite person would definitely be Nokken, if you met her you might be a little frightened at first by her outward appearance but her personality is so warm. She has picked me up and dusted me off more than once and she has an interesting way of getting around! The most interesting person though is probably the cool and calculated Mera, she is only a child but she packs a good punch. I would definitely watch my back around her! Despite my acquired skills on this journey, she is someone that I would have no chance of taking down myself.
Question 3: Did you learn anything new about yourself on this adventure?
Answer: Apart from something glaring obvious that would really spoil things if I was to let it slip right now, I really learned a bit of resolve and that I didn’t have to fit in with the popular crowd in order to feel comfortable with myself. I don’t fit in to normal society, and actually, that isn’t something to be ashamed of. Being weird is good. Normal is overrated!
Question 4: Name one thing that you would abolish if you could.
Answer: Oh, that’s easy – definitely hierarchy. I don’t understand how anyone believes that they are above or more important than anyone else in the world. Having the luck to be born in a certain place or a certain way doesn’t make you better than anyone else who wasn’t that fortunate. A desire to rule others is a pretty good reason for you not to, in my opinion.
Question 5: What was the biggest challenge you faced on this adventure?
Answer: You would think it might be demons, magic and you know, trying to save the world under dire circumstances, but actually it was that I didn’t feel quite myself (you’ll understand when you get to know me a bit more!) and I had to learn a whole new way of doing things from scratch. I really miss my favourite foods too…

Sunday Snippet: The Heath Cousins and the Kingsgate Bridge by Eileen Hobbs
Are you looking for a new book to read for free? Today’s Sunday Snippet is from the Children’s Chapter Book The Heath Cousins and the Kingsgate Bridge by Eileen Hobbs. The Heath Cousins and the Kingsgate Bridge by Eileen Hobbs was published in 2018 by Palmetto Publishers and is currently available as a paperback with ISBN 978-1-64111-250-5 and Amazon Kindle ebook with ASIN: B07PJ1RWXQ.
Synopsis of The Heath Cousins and the Kingsgate Bridge by Eileen Hobbs
The Heath Cousins and the Moonstone Cave introduced readers to Addie B. and her cousins, Jack, Bodie and Beanie when the kids traveled to the otherworldly Garden of Choice and encountered new friends and adventures.
In Book 2, The heath Cousins and the Kingsgate Bridge, Addie B. and her cousins must return to the Garden of Choice – this time to help their friend Gemma. Gemma is the kind woman from the Garden of Choice who reminds all the cousins of their Grandma Winnie who recently passed away. Addie B. and her cousins return to the Garden of Choice through the Kingsgate Bridge and, along with help from friends, must face the evil wolf Daiyu and help save Gemma.
Name of chapter snippet is from: Chapter 4 – The Treasure Chest
At first they could see nothing because of the blackness. Addie turned to Bodie.
“Quick Bodie! The marble!” she urged.
But Bodie was ahead of her. “I’m already on it!” he said, holding up his marble that he had been given from their visit to Moonstone Cave. As before, the marble glowed like a flashlight, illuminating the small room around them. It was a very small cave, with rounded stone walls. Jack’s head almost touched the ceiling. The room was empty except for a wooden treasure chest in the center.
“Maybe there’s gold in there!” Beanie said excitedly, leaning down next to the chest. He started to open it but Addie cautioned him.
“Wait Beanie!” Addie said. “Remember the sword?”
Beanie nodded, thinking of the sword that burned his hand from their previous adventure.
“I’ll do it,” Jack said, kneeling down in front of the chest. If anyone would get hurt, it would be him. He was the Protector after all.
Slowly, he grasped the latch on the chest and lifted the lid. There was definitely no gold. Bodie held his glowing marble over the trunk to reveal its contents.
Addie reached in and lifted out a red velvet floor length cloak with a fur lined hood. It looked to be her size.
“I already have a coat,” Addie said. “Am I supposed to wear this?’” Her cousins only shrugged. The next item was an axe in a leather sleeve.
“Darn!” Jack said. “I was hoping for my sword back.” Addie handed him the axe. She knew it wouldn’t be safe for Bodie or Beanie to carry no matter how much they wanted to. She reached deep down inside the chest to see what else was in it. Her hand touched a small smooth pouch with a draw string closing. She lifted it out.
“What is it?” Bodie asked curiously. Addie opened it and peered inside.
“It looks like…some seeds.” She poured some out in the palm of her hand.
“That’s weird,” Beanie said. “What is that for?’
Of course, none of them knew the answer. It was all a big mystery.
“Can I keep it?” Bodie asked. Addie handed Bodie the small pouch. It seemed harmless enough.
“Anything else in there?” Jack asked.
Addie leaned back over the chest again. The next item she brought out was a magnifying glass. The handle was gold and had a snake carved around it.
“Cool!” Beanie said. “Can I have that?”
Addie shrugged and handed it to Beanie.
Addie leaned over the chest again, rubbing her hand across the rough wooden bottom. “I think that’s it…” she started to say, and then exclaimed. “Wait. There’s a piece of paper! And something shiny next to it…”
Addie pulled out a crinkled paper that looked yellowed and worn. Along with it was a beautiful gold necklace with a bright turquoise stone. Addie’s hands began to shake as she examined the necklace.
“It’s Gemma’s!” she whispered.
“How do you know,” Jack asked.
“I remember her wearing it! When we first met her in the garden. But it wasn’t around her neck. It was around her forehead, like a crown.”
She turned to look at her cousins. Their pale faces shone like ghosts in the light of Bodie’s marble. “This is not a good sign,” Addie said. “She must be in real danger.”
“Read what’s on the paper!” Jack urged.
There was a dark ink script on it. It was covered in smudges as if the author had shed a tear while writing it.
“What does it say?” all her cousins asked at once. The writing was in Latin but none of them had been surprised. All their previous instructions had been in the same language and only Addie, with the help of her Moonstone ring, could read it. Her ring began to glow as she started to decipher the writing. But before she did, she skipped to the bottom of the page to see who the author was. There, a hurried signature read:
Gemma
“It’s from Gemma!” Addie exclaimed. “Hang on!”
She began to read the letter, slowly at first, as the Latin words changed into English before her very eyes.
“Dear Wanderers” she read.
I write this letter in great haste!”
“What’s haste?” Bodie asked. Beanie punched him lightly in the arm.
“It means in a hurry, silly” he said.
“I didn’t know!” Bodie fired back, frowning at his older brother.
“Stop it!” Jack said. “There’s no time for fighting. Go ahead Addie.”
Addie continued. “As I write, my Garden is being destroyed. Jumani has been taken from my side and I know now I am next. Remember these words, Wanderers.
The jewel of the garden is gone.
To find her, remember this song.
What seems to be right may be wrong.
The jewel may appear
But test that she’s real
One stone is pearl white,
The other like night.
Ignore the one who sings
But Follow the sapphire wings
Where once the secret treasure lay
This is where you’ll find the way.
Now hurry to the garden door
Or Wanderers will be no more.
Addie looked up at her cousins. They were all silent for a moment, taking in Gemma’s words of warning.
“What does all that mean?” Bodie asked finally.
“I’m not sure,” Addie said. “But I think we need to find out.”
“There’s no door,” Beanie said, looking around the small enclosure. “How do we get to the garden from here?”
A rumbling noise startled all of them. It seemed to be coming from the stone walls of the cave. The dirt floor under them began to shake.
“It’s an earthquake!” Beanie exclaimed.
“Look!” Jack said. “The walls are moving toward us!”
He was right. The room was getting smaller and smaller as they watched. It wouldn’t be long before the walls would close in around them and crush them!
“What do we do Addie?” Bodie asked. His voice trembled. Addie knew he was fighting back tears. Her heart was also pounding. She looked at Gemma’s letter again, searching for clues to a way to escape the suffocating walls.
“Addie!” Jack said, trying to control his fear as well. “I can touch both sides of the cave! What should we do?”
Addie looked up and saw that Jack’s long arms were outstretched and his palms were flat against both sides of the wall. The door where they had entered the small room had disappeared.
“Where once the secret treasure lay…” Addie read again. “The treasure!” She repeated. “I think she means the treasure chest.”
She leaned over the treasure chest once again and felt the bottom of it. Her hands touched a metal handle that had not been there before. She pulled on it but it did not budge
“Jack!” she yelled. “See if you can pull this up.” The sound of the moving rock walls was getting closer and closer.
Jack reached passed her and tugged on the metal ring. It began to lift up slowly.
“Bodie! Let me see your marble!”
Bodie shown his light over Jack’s shoulder.
“There are stairs!” Jack yelled. “Quick! Get in!”
He helped Bodie into the chest first. “Go on down the stairs Bodie. We’re right behind you!”
Beanie descended next. Addie quickly stuffed the cloak, Gemma’s letter and amulet into the backpack and followed Beanie down the shaky wooden steps. She looked back to make sure Jack was behind her. He had taken his first steps down the stairs when they heard a loud crunching noise. The walls closed in on the treasure chest above them and it began to splinter into pieces. Jack quickly closed the trap door just as the chest disintegrated above them.
They stood in silence at the bottom of the stairs, breathing hard. Their faces glowed pale white in the light of Bodie’s marble. They looked around to see where they were. It was another small cavern. In front of them was another door, arched at the top and made of iron..
“Let’s get out of here!” Jack said. Beanie took out his key and inserted it in the rusty metal lock. It turned and they pushed it open. Bright sunlight greeted them and they hurried out, anxious to be out of the dark cave with the deathly walls.
“We’re back!” Bodie yelled with excitement. “We’re back in the garden!!”
Bodie was right. All around them, the familiar walls of a garden rose up around them. They had returned to the garden where they had first met Gemma and Jumani last summer. They were back!
Their joy and excitement quickly turned to dismay, however. While the sun shone brightly and it was very warm, everything looked different. Where once luscious pink, purple and white flowers bloomed and emerald colored ivy trailed over the stone walls, there was only brown, dried leaves and dead stalks. Some of the plants even looked as if a fire had swept through, leaving black, ugly sticks in their place. There were no flowers, no heavenly scents of honeysuckle like before. There was no life at all.
“Oh no!” Addie whispered. “What happened?”

Name of character to be interviewed: Mikel
Why was this character chosen?: Mike has a mysterious and caring nature to him, it interests me the influence he has on his group of friends, his calm speaks volumes about his character.
Question 1: Was you ever in love with Kazzy?
Answer: To be honest Kazzy was a one night stand. but over time as she began to hang out with our crowd the intimate moments got more deeper, and then somehow my feelings were getting attached to her.
Love is a strong word, I’d like to say I was deeply into her yes.
Question 2: Why such an influence among the interns you work with?
Answer: When we all moved into the house together no one hardly spoke to eachother, I broke the ice, got us invites to local parties in the area, also organized fun nights for the room mates. This solidness brought respect with it. Aswell as that I always looked out for Sonia, Andrew, Jasmine and Lucas, including Vanessa who recently joint the clique.
Question 3: What has drawn you to Vanessa?
Answer: She’s a special one, she doesn’t realize it, her eyes took me by surprise, her smile is so real and her aura is true. I see myself in her, and it’s hard to kind of look away right?
She is so loving too, abit too loving but it’s her strength but she may see it as her weakness.
Question 4: Why did you want to be a fashion designer?
Answer: Its something different, my dad owns an oil company back in Nigeria, and I wanted a change from working with my Father to actually finding a new interest. Everyone including myself knew I could dress well so went to Fashion school before being an intern at Avena LA Grand

Character Interview: Jacob’s Ladder by Jake Evanoff
Today’s character interview is from the Children’s Picture Book Jacob’s Ladder by Jake Evanoff. Jacob’s Ladder was self-published by the author on the 1st of July 2019 and has 26 pages. It is currently available as a paperback, ISBN-13: 978-1999162818 and an eBook, ISBN-13: 978-1-9991628-0-1.
Synopsis of Jacob’s Ladder by Jake Evanoff
Jacob and Halley are the best of friends. They live in the small town of Hadderville and they do absolutely everything together! Every day after school, they meet up in Jacob’s tree house to start their next adventure, but one day Halley doesn’t show up! How far will Jacob go to find her?
Name of character to be interviewed:
Jacob’s Dad
Why was this character chosen to be interviewed?
I chose to interview Jacob’s dad because while he isn’t the main character of the story, he still plays a major role in it. Jacob’s dad encourages him right from the beginning and having that support assures Jacob that he’s making a good decision.
Question 1: How long had Jacob and Halley known each other?
Answer: Pretty much their whole lives. Since the day that Halley moved in next door to us the two were basically inseparable.
Question 2: When Halley went away, Jacob decided to build a ladder to try to reach her comet up in the sky… Has he always been one to think outside the box?
Answer: Jacob is by far the most creative child I know when it comes to finding unique solutions to problems.
Question 3: When you discovered that he was building the ladder, what was your initial reaction?
Answer: I was proud of him. Instead of letting the situation bring him down, he used his resources to come up with a plan.
Question 4: Were you surprised by how many people showed up to offer their support?
Answer: Not at all. In our little town, we all stick together. Everybody knows each other by name and you can always count on your neighbors to lend a helping hand.
Question 5: Do you think that Jacob brought the town of Hadderville even closer together with his actions?
Answer: Absolutely! I don’t think anyone will be forgetting about Jacob’s Ladder anytime soon.
