It’s another wet day in London today and I think it is the perfect time for a new book. In today’s blog post, I bring you an interview featuring one of the characters of the speculative fiction Spaghetti Head by Sarah Tyley. Synopsis of Spaghetti Head by Sarah Tyley

Do you ever feel like you can’t think straight: that you have a negative voice in your head, constantly talking, messing with your emotions? Spaghetti Head follows Nell Greene on her journey of self-discovery as she struggles to take control of her negative inner voice: SID. Under pressure to have a child in a post-disaster world, Nell needs to find a partner – but, as SID regularly reminds her, she is incapable of trust, so how can she ever going to fall in love, let alone persuade anyone to fall in love with her? Nell enrols at a state-of-the-art therapy centre where she explores her memories and fears in an attempt to take control of SID, learn to trust, and find love. SID, however, has other ideas.

Why was this character chosen for this interview?:

How often do destructive alter-egos get the opportunity to give an interview? Cyd leapt at the chance.

Question 1: What first made you want to appear in Sarah Tyley’s book?

Answer: Cyd: I didn’t want to appear in it! What clear-thinking alter-ego would ever want to be enrolled at a residential therapy-centre, and have all the details recorded in a book?

Question 2: So, how did you end up going to a therapy-centre?

Answer: Cyd: Because Nell went! Apparently, I was the root of all her problems, which I find hard to stomach seeing as I wouldn’t even exist if she hadn’t thought me up. Do you think it would have been my choice to be shoved away in a dark corner of someone’s mind only being allowed out to talk nonsense? Nell was informed by the planet’s governing body that she had to increase the crumbling global population by having a baby: or face severe consequences. Hilarious! Nell, having a baby wa about as likely as rice growing on trees. For a start, it would mean she needed to get into a relationship, and stay in it – which would also mean she would need to trust someone, and that’s wasn’t going to happen this side of the next century. I persuaded Nell to refuse and face the consequences.

Question 3: How did the governing body react?

Answer: Cyd: They never found out. Nell’s interfering Mum got involved before Nell sent her reply to them. She persuaded Nell to use her ‘personal development’ credits at one of Scandinavia’s state-of-the-art therapy centres. Interfering Mum believed that with the right help, Nell would rid herself of me, (apparently the reason for all her problems. What a joke), meet a man, fall in love, have a baby and live happily ever after. Deluded, or what?

Question 4: Did you think therapy would help Nell

Answer: They never found out. Nell’s interfering Mum got involved before Nell sent her reply to them. She persuaded Nell to use her ‘personal development’ credits at one of Scandinavia’s state-of-the-art therapy centres. Interfering Mum believed that with the right help, Nell would rid herself of me, (apparently the reason for all her problems. What a joke), meet a man, fall in love, have a baby and live happily ever after. Deluded, or what?

Question 5: So what did happen?

Answer: Cyd: Miracles. It’s hard to describe really. Nell and I went on mad adventures inside her mind and met one another face to face and got so angry we tried to destroy one another and eventually laughed about it and cried and met other crazy people and she fell in love and Alice (Nell’s house robot) fell in love and I learnt to knit and I now live in a beautiful wood cabin with orange curtains and it was all bonkers-mad. Oh, but the best bit – I’m now Nell’s second-best-friend.

Synopsis: Two fish tales in one!

The Fish King is lonely and wishes he has a wife to keep him company. Why was this character chosen for this interview?: Because they both go to a party given by The Fish King and they find themselves dancing with two ghosts

INTERVIEWER: So, Countess Von Dolphin and Leanora Sharkeyes, you must have been to a lot Fish King’s parties?

A – Countess Von Dolphin

Yes I have, I’ve known the Fish King, since he was the size of a tadpole. We went to fish school together. He’s always been a bit grumpy, I surprised he decided to have a party, he’s not a very good dancer.

A – Leanora Sharkeyes

I’ve been to quite a few events at Fish and Clam Palace.

 

INTERVIEWER: What was the food like?

Answer: Countess Von Dolphin

The royal chef made them the most delicious treats a seaweed salad with worms to eat. Fish eggs and larvae, jellyfish with a sauce, a special surprise with every course.

 

INTERVIEWER: Sounds a bit unusual. After the meal what happened next?

Answer: Countess Von Dolphin
Then came musicians all ready to play with sea shanties, the music got under-way.
The guests tapped their feet in time with the beat and soon everybody got up from their seat.

 

INTERVIEWER: Sounds like a great party. What changed?

Answer: Countess Von Dolphin
There I was happily skipping about, then I let out an almighty scream “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!”
I said “my partner’s not normal I think he’s a ghost, he doesn’t seem to dance, he just seems to float. Then I added “ when I touched him he was just thin air. I looked in his eyes, at his ghostly stare.”

 

INTERVIEWER: You mean to say, you were at a party and found yourself, dancing with a ghost?

Answer: Countess Von Dolphin
That’s right. I was really shocked I might tell you.

 

INTERVIEWER: What about you Leanora?

Leanora Sharkeyes

I found myself with a phantom moving in full swing. I tried to speak to him, just to get his name. He just stared right through me and no answer came. It was a most frightening experience, I might tell you.

 

INTERVIEWER: What happened next?

Countess Von Dolphin

There was pandemonium in the great hall. Protocol was quickly forgotten by one and all. Eyes shot about for sightings of spooks. You should have seen the faces of all those duchess, and dukes.

The King bellowed “everybody remain nice and calm.”

But the guests faces were pale, still terribly alarmed.

But now the two ghosts were nowhere to be seen. It was as if it had just been a terribly strange dream. The dancing stopped, though the musicians played on, as the night got colder and a bright moon shone.

Prince Eric had watched this story unfold. He’d watched the ghosts dancing, it was a sight to behold. His best moment was when Countess Von Dolphin realized her partner was a spook. He’d burst out laughing, as he saw her shocked look.

Soon some guests demanded their coats. They didn’t want to stay knowing the palace had ghosts.

 

INTERVIEWER: So Prince Erik saw the ghosts dancing with you at the party?

Countess Von Dolphin

He thought it was the funniest thing ever. He was in on the joke from the start, the royal rascal.

 

INTERVIEWER: One last question. How does a fish know when the party’s over?

Countess Von Dolphin

WWell, that’s pretty obvious, when it’s fin-ished.

 

INTERVIEWER: Well thank you very much for telling us about your spooky experience. As you know The Daily Star fish is always fishing for a big catch.

Countess Von Dolphin

Thanks for the oppor-tuna-ty.

 

Author Bio

Born in 1961, in Reading, England Francis H Powell attended Art Schools, receiving a degree in painting and an MA in printmaking. In 1995, Francis H Powell moved to Austria, teaching English as a foreign language while pursuing his varied artistic interests adding music and writing. He currently lives in Moret sur Loing, France writing both prose and poetry.

Francis H Powell has published short stories in the magazine, “Rat Mort” and other works on the internet site “Multi-dimensions.” He has had three books published and has also compiled a book of short stories, poems, and illustrations, featuring other writers and poets. The book is called “Together Behind Four Walls” and is a book of lockdown stories and poems.

The books have raised money for Marie Curie nurses. He has had poems published in anthologies, for both adults and children. He has done poetry reading for Paris Lit Up as well as other events.

Turner Syndrome, what’s that?

A few days ago, I connected with another blogger via Twitter, and whilst browsing through their blog, I discovered a new medical condition that I knew nothing about. If like me, this is your first time hearing about Turner Syndrome, this guest post by Charli Dee should hopefully be a good starting point for you.

The year I graduated from middle school was quite a year. I was about to leave one school and start attending a new one. I welcomed a new member to my family. It was also the year I was diagnosed with Turner syndrome. Don’t know what Turner Syndrome is? Neither did I when I was diagnosed, which is not surprising. Turner Syndrome is a relatively rare condition, and not very well known.

What is Turner Syndrome?

Turner syndrome is when a girl is born with one of her X chromosomes partially or fully missing (boys generally have an x and Y chromosome, while girls generally have two X chromosomes). Turner syndrome occurs in around 1 in 2,000 to 2,500 live female births (Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center). Around 99 of pregnancies where the fetus has Turner syndrome end in miscarriage (Stanford Children’s Health). I suppose that makes me a bit of a miracle baby, or so I like to think.

 

My Diagnosis

My Turner syndrome diagnosis didn’t come as a shock to me. Short stature is generally a symptom of Turner syndrome, and I have always been quite small for my age. Also, when I reached my teen years my female peers were already growing out of training bras and getting their menstruation. I had yet to show a single sign of even beginning puberty, another sign of Turner syndrome. My parents and my doctor started getting concerned, and my doctor took some tests. The rest is history. I may not have been surprised with my diagnosis, but I was disappointed. Growing up, I couldn’t wait for puberty. I used to read all about the changes my body would eventually go through, and couldn’t wait for them to happen. When I was diagnosed I found out I would not be able to go through puberty without hormone replacement therapy. I felt like an incomplete woman, having to take medication in order to get my body to do something most women’s bodies do naturally. To top it all off, I was told that women with Turner syndrome generally can not have children naturally, and I was likely no exception to that rule.

 

A Woman’s Worth

Beautiful was never really a word I used to describe myself. In fact, I’ve been called the exact opposite growing up. Needless to say, I am happy I’m an adult now, and past the bullying days. However, they say if you’re told something long enough, you’ll eventually start to believe it. In other words, what I was told by some of my peers, and the way I was treated by them, affected how I viewed myself, and still does in a way. Learning to embrace who I am has not been an easy journey, but I am improving my self-image one day at a time. I’ve learned that a woman’s chest and hip size do not determine how beautiful she is or her worth. I’ve learned that having to take hormones and being infertile does not make me a failure, or less of a woman.

 

CONCLUSION

Who knows why I was part of that small one percent of babies with Turner syndrome to make it through pregnancy? I just know I’d like to think that right now my purpose is to spread awareness and help all women feel comfortable in the skin their in. In a world where many people feel the need to change perceived imperfections, everyone deserves to know that they are perfect just the way they are.

Synopsis:

Chapter 1

A diseased, dirty wind whipped up against the towering fence guarding France’s Space-Lift. The razor wire swayed gently back and forth as the polluted air buffeted it. The structure, along with scores of laser-rifle toting guards, had been specifically setup to keep the general population away from the precious mode of transport. It was only the best, brightest, and richest, that were allowed to pass the outer perimeter. Yet, part of the fence was beginning to fail in its task.

One of the thousands of metallic support poles that held the fencing in place had finally decided to embrace the hopelessness of the barren landscape around it, and was drooping inwards. As a result, a small space was being created between the wire and the filthy ground. Today, someone was determined to make the most of that tiny opportunity.

With a final check of his watch, a diminutive figure rose from the cover of a burnt-out vehicle. The man hoisted a heavy backpack higher up his shoulder, and then burst into a run. Reaching the fence, he squinted against the murky skyline, and breathed a deep sigh into the respirator strapped tightly around his mouth. With a swift prayer to a god he no longer believed in, he dropped the bulging backpack to the ground, and pulled out two old-fashioned oxygen tanks. Being careful to keep his hands well away from the prickly protective wire, the man used the heavy cylinders to prop up the loose section of fencing, creating a gap just big enough for his malnourished body to slide through.

With the protective barrier balanced as best as he could on the tanks, the man made a final check of the small oxygen satchel strapped to his leg. Content that the lifegiving device was properly secured, and pumping perfectly to his respirator, he lowered himself to the ground. It was slow going as he crawled, scrapping his stomach across the stony soil. Inch by perilous inch he squeezed forward. He didn’t even dare to breath. Finally, with a flick of his ankles, the man swung himself round into the compound. Being certain he was clear of the wire, he sat up and gazed around for a long moment. The view wasn’t any different from the other side of the fence, he simply marvelled at looking at it from within.

The man’s view was ruined as the bright beam of a lantern cut through the dirty air. The trespasser immediately twisted to grab at the rucksack he had left on the other side of the fence. As he hurriedly tugged the bag it caught on one of the oxygen tanks. In a panic, he heaved harder, and then watched in dismay as the cylinder started to wobble. The man yelped, and dragged the rucksack in the opposite direction, bumping it into the second canister. With a yelp, he just managed to get the bag out of the way as the canisters fell and the fence’s knife-like cables shot back into position. The man’s head bobbed down and cursed his own stupidity.

Quickly catching himself, he remembered the approaching sentry and pushed up, before dashing towards his final goal. The Space-Lift was still a distance away, but he had to get to it. He was on a mission, and for him getting caught was not an option.

Why was this character chosen for this interview?: He is the story’s main character and the captain of the airship Galeru.

Let’s delve into the Secrets of Captain CorsairQuestion 1: Why did you decide to become a sky pirate?

Answer: I wanted to follow Master Tesla’s dream of new technology for everyone, not just for the corporate rich lining Thomas Edison’s pockets. Freedom, peace, and prosperity are for everyone, and I intend to spread the wealth, even if I have to lie, cheat, and steal to do it.

Question 2: Your airship is called the Galeru. Why such an unusual name?

Answer: Galeru is the name of the mythical rainbow serpent from aboriginal mythology. It’s meant to invoke fear in my enemies and a vision of hope in the eyes of the people. Seeing the “serpent of the sky” with the Jolly Roger flying from the tailfin lets people know who they’re dealing with.

Question 3: Tell me a little bit about your crew.

Answer: The crew of the Galeru is a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life. My first officer, “Kiki” Mori, is a ronin as beautiful as she is deadly. Our pilot, “Eager” Kingsman, is the best in the air for a blind man. The Scarlet “Fox” is the best Shade in the business, able to infiltrate and discover everyone’s secrets. Besides being an Italian lover, “Dash” Castello is my weapons expert and sharpshooter. “Knox” Roming is a former military man and my heavy weapons specialist. “Bronx” Jones is a Vernian genius and my Chief Engineer, and “Moon Crow” is our ship’s doctor, expect tracker, and an Apache medicine man. I couldn’t do my job without them.

Question 4: Where do your adventures take you?

Answer: All over the world. From our recent heist over the English Channel to the ruins at Luxor in the Egyptian desert, the skyline of New York City and the streets of Harlem, to the American Southwest. But no matter where we go, Odysseus Station over the Öræfajökull Volcano in southeastern Iceland will always be home. Master Tesla built it as a way station for sky pirates, refugees, and anyone searching for freedom from the corporate grip of Thomas Edison and his ERP Corporation.

Question 5: Do you have any secrets, Captain Corsair?

Answer: No comment. This isn’t the right place for that conversation.

How to Awaken Your Destiny: Ori Appreciation for Personal Growth

Do you ever feel that you’re not living up to your full potential, or like you’re struggling in one aspect of your life or the other, no matter how hard you work? Do you feel like there’s something missing in your life, despite having everything you need to be happy and successful? The Yoruba people believe that these feelings could be a result of not being in tune with your inner self, your Ori. In this blog post, I share with you how to awaken your destiny by appreciating and appeasing your Ori!

 

What is Ori?

Ori literally means head but in this context, it is a term used in Yoruba religion and spirituality to describe our individual inner consciousness and destiny. Think of it as your spiritual head, not your physical head. Your Ori is believed to guide you through life and keep you aligned with your purpose. Therefore, appeasing your Ori is a vital step towards achieving personal growth and success.

There’s a saying I once heard, he who fights with his Ori, fights with himself! Thus, for things to fall into place perfectly for you, you need to be in alignment with your Ori.

Here’s how to awaken your destiny and appreciate your Ori to promote your personal growth and success:

1. Meditation and self-reflection: Spend some time in quiet contemplation and meditation to connect with your inner self and understand your true desires and purpose. When you know where you are coming from and where you are heading to, then you can work out a path to get there. To simplify, you need to know what you truly want out of your life first before asking your Ori to help you achieve it.

2. Observance of Taboos: Observe and respect the religious and cultural taboos associated with your Ori or in your ancestral lineage. In some families, there are some things that are considered taboo for them. Going against your family’s taboos can cause dissonance in your life. Your Ori is thought to have distinct preferences when it comes to dressing, food choices, and interactions with others. Embrace taboos that align with your Ori to promote inner peace and personal development. For some people, some colours do not resonate with them and they should avoid wearing those colours.

3. Personal cleanliness: Ensure personal cleanliness since physical hygiene is believed to be an indication that the body, and therefore Ori, is being respected and honored.

4. Explore your strengths and weaknesses: Your Ori is said to guide you to your purpose in life. You can also think of your Ori as that inner voice that speaks with you. Explore your strengths and weakness, interests and passions, and align them with your career or personal goals. For instance, if you love animals, you could consider choosing a career that revolves around animals in one way or the other.

5. Appreciate and enjoy what you already have: Gratitude is another way of appeasing your Ori. Appreciate what you have, celebrate small wins, and cherish the moment. More good things will continue to come your way. If you cannot appreciate what you already have, you will find that peace of mind will be far away from you.

I regularly tell my daughter, if the desirable is not available, the available becomes desirable!

6. Offering of Prayers and Sacrifices: Offer prayers, and make an offering or sacrifices to your Ori. This can include offerings such as kola nuts, fruits, water, honey, and kolanuts or any other item you feel is appropriate.

If you do not know what you are doing, please do not attempt to offer any sacrifices on your own. Rather, say positive words over your life in the form of prayers and regularly cleanse yourself.

7. Regularly attend or participate in spiritual events and rites, and consult a Babalawo or Iyanifa for guidance and instruction in conducting prayers and offerings.

 

Appreciating your Ori is a crucial ingredient to awakening your destiny

Ori appreciation is a fundamental part of Yoruba religion and spirituality, and it is a crucial ingredient for personal growth and success. Paying attention to your Ori and appeasing it helps you connect with your inner self, discover your purpose, and unlock your full potential. By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can increase your chances of achieving the life you desire.

It’s important to note that the specifics of how to appease your Ori may differ depending on your individual beliefs and practices within the Yoruba religion. It’s always wise to consult with an elder in your family if you are Yoruba or a spiritual leader if you’re unsure about the procedures or steps to take.

Corsair and the Sky Pirates Takes Double BookFest Honors in 2023
