Sunday Snippet: A Knife’s Edge by Eliot Parker

Today’s Sunday Snippet is from the thriller A Knife’s Edge by Eliot Parker. It was published by Headline Books and is available as an Ebook: (ASIN: B07JVXMMLQ); Paperback: (ISBN 978-1946664426); Audiobook: (ASIN: B07P5JKB34).

Synopsis of A Knife’s Edge by Eliot Parker

book cover blog post picture ebook thriller A Knife's Edge by Eliot ParkerWill her secrets put his life in danger?

Six months after a drug cartel infiltrated Charleston, Police Agent Ronan McCullough continues to fight the drug war that plagues the city. His investigations are halted when the body of a mutual acquaintance, Sarah Gilmore, is found in the trunk of a burning car.

In an investigation that takes him deep into the professional and personal life of the victim, McCullough discovers secrets lurking in her past, and a tangled web of personal and professional conflicts, suspicion, and betrayal.

Sarah’s life is connected to BTech, a new blood diagnostics company that has established a headquarters in Charleston, promising to revolutionize the way diseases are diagnosed and treated and aid the police in criminal investigations. Sarah’s work reveals details about BTech that the company doesn’t want anyone else to know.

Was Sarah killed for those reasons or something larger? As Ronan seeks answers, his life and the lives of those closest to him are used as pawns in a deadly game that has no ending.

Sequel to the Award-winning novel Fragile Brilliance.

Chapter 3 from A Knife’s Edge by Eliot Parker

Ronan opened one eye. The thick haze of fractured debris made his eyes burn.

He spat, trying to clear the dust from his nose and throat. He wiped the back of his uniform sleeve across his eyes and blinked twice. When the scene became clearer, he found the room had been reduced to rubble by the impact. A smoldering, jagged hole had ruptured the skin of the building, like a busted pipe.

Ronan stared at the ceiling. The force of the collision had buckled the outer wall of Clay Center and the spiral metal staircase had collapsed when the roof partially caved in on it.

Sore, but generally unhurt, Ronan noted thin streams of blood on his hand. Instinctively, he drew it closer. He felt warm tingling on his forehead. With the other hand, Ronan touched the area. A fresh speck of blood coated his fingertips. He began quizzing himself silently. He was able to recall his name, where he lived, and his birthdate. Although not exact, the impromptu assessment told him he didn’t have a concussion.

Ronan pulled himself up to a seated position. The atrium smelled of sulfur. Flecks of ruptured electrical writing hung loose from the ceiling and surrounding walls. Ronan could hear the pained groans of people around him. From across the room, a woman screamed, causing others around her to start trying to move.

Then it clicked. Ty. Ronan called out his name. He heard nothing but the dull buzzing of a bent streetlight that had been plowed over by the collision and now hung at an odd angle like a bowed tree.

Ronan called out for Ty again. The screams from the woman across the room subsided and she begged for help.

In moments of chaos and disaster, Ronan knew to focus on one task at time. The first order he gave himself was finding Ty. Ronan pulled himself to his feet. His vision blurred for a moment as a wave of dizziness overcame him. He closed his eyes for a second, held his breath, and waited for the blood in his head to equalize. Luckily, it worked.

Now clear-headed, Ronan looked around him. The scene resembled a war-zone. Tables had been overturned, the dais at the front of the room had been pushed back and shattered into the wall. Bricks and mortar speckled the floor. Dust was everywhere, clouding the air. Many of the guests were seriously injured.

The buffet table that hugged the wall in front of Ronan before the collision had been smashed. Food lay scattered across the room in colored clumps. Ronan took inventory of the damage. Near the far end of the buffet line, Ronan saw the man that had pointed into the plaza outside. He lay on one side, bent at his waist, with a large column of bricks and steel piled onto him.

Ronan raced over and lifted some of the bricks from his body and pulled back what pieces of steel he could grab. Ronan winced as a jagged piece of steel cut his finger, trickling a new stream of blood over his hand. Despite Ronan’s removing the excessive weight, the man did not move. After a few more seconds, Ronan was able to see the man’s face. It was badly smashed and the bones in his face had shattered like glass. Ronan reached down and placed two fingers on his neck. There was no pulse and his skin felt cold. He was dead.

This was the first discovered casualty. There would be more.

What’s Wrong with Wheat? Guest Post By Susan Neal RN, MBA, MHS

Today’s post is written by author Susan Neal who will be making an appearance on my podcast The Segilola Salami Show. In this post, Susan talks about what’s wrong with wheat, in her opinion, and what she feels you can do for the betterment of your health. Happy reading!

What’s Wrong with Wheat?

For centuries, people flourished by consuming bread. Nevertheless, the problem with wheat is that it is not the same today as it was one hundred years ago. Most people have no idea that wheat has been bred to the point the body thinks of it as a foreign substance. This is from hybridization. Eliminate wheat because it is addictive and the human body has difficulty digesting the gluten.

Today, grocery stores and restaurants make nongluten food choices readily available. Why has gluten sensitivity skyrocketed? Fifty years ago, sensitivity to gluten was rare. I believe it is because the human body cannot proficiently digest the gluten in wheat the way it is hybridized now.

Hybridized Wheat

Norman Borlaug received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 in recognition of his contributions to world peace through increasing the food supply through hybridization—crossbreeding of different varieties—of wheat. He crossbred various types of wheat to create a high-yield dwarf wheat. Wheat is now only a couple of feet tall, drought resistant, and prolific. Unfortunately, the gluten changed so much that it can induce gluten sensitivity. Therefore, do not consume wheat products. No waffles, pancakes, muffins, cake, piecrust, pizza, pretzels, bread, pasta—the list goes on and on.

Gluten is in wheat, barley, and rye. Yet breads made of barley and rye are uncommon. Therefore, I believe the gluten culprit comes from the hybridization of wheat.  Wheat is addictive because a polypeptide from wheat passes through the blood-brain barrier and goes to the opiate receptors in the brain. These receptors release dopamine, the feel-good neurohormone, making you desire more of the product.

Since gluten in the hybridized wheat is difficult to digest, some individuals become sensitive or intolerant to the gluten. These individuals experience digestive problems when they consume foods with gluten. If a person’s body does not recognize gluten as food, their immune system attacks the gluten and, unfortunately, their body at the same time. The intestinal lining becomes damaged, resulting in holes in the intestinal wall (called leaky gut). Those holes allow food to enter the bloodstream. In turn, a person may become allergic to other types of food as well. It is not surprising that gluten sensitivity is often paired with an autoimmune condition because the body accidentally starts harming its own cells as it attacks the broken-down food particles in the bloodstream.

In other words, if you get an autoimmune disease, it could have been caused by a gluten sensitivity you didn’t know you had. This sensitivity could have caused your immune system to get confused and attack a part of your body. Therefore, I recommend anyone with an autoimmune disease not eat wheat.

Processed White Flour

White flour is one of the most prevalent wheat products used today, and it is far removed from the grain it once was. A wheat berry consists of three layers: bran, germ, and endosperm. White flour contains one part of the wheat kernel—the endosperm, which is mostly starch. The other two parts of the wheat contain the fiber and nutrients, and these are not included in white flour. The flour has also been chemically bleached, consequently, the grain no longer resembles the wholesome food it once was. Now a slice of bread will raise your blood-sugar level higher than a teaspoon of sugar.

Before 1870, wheat was stone-ground, and the whole grain was mashed (all three parts of the kernel). The invention of the steel roller revolutionized grain milling. With this device, the components of the wheat berry could be separated. Removing the bran (fiber) and germ (nutrients) significantly extended the shelf life of the processed flour. Stone-ground flour contained natural oils from the wheat and became rancid after sitting for a time on the shelf.

This limited shelf life is similar to nuts and oil. Have you ever eaten a rancid nut or smelled rancid oil? The capacity of food to become spoiled is a good thing because the foul smell and taste lets you know the value of the food is gone. However, food industries prefer products with a longer shelf life so their products won’t go bad and can be sold for a longer period of time.

Unfortunately, after the bran and germ components of the wheat berry were removed from the wheat, people started having diseases caused by deficiencies in B vitamins because the wheat germ, which contained the grain’s nutrients, was removed from flour. Therefore, in the 1940s, vitamin enrichment of bread began.

Processed foods, like white flour, with their extended shelf life, do not go bad anymore because the natural nutrients were removed. Consequently, such foods don’t benefit the human body. In fact, if we eat processed foods that do not contain nutrients, we deprive ourselves of essential vitamins and minerals. A lack of nutrients leads to malnutrition. We end up overweight but malnourished because the processed foods did not contain nutrients or fiber, only empty calories. No wonder our bodies are unhealthy.

About Andrew Schatkin

Andrew Schatkin has a JD, law degree, two internmational law certificates from Holland and France and a theology degree from Princeton Theological

Seminary in Biblical languages, Greek, Latin and Hebrew

He is the author of 5 books, 5 book chapters, and 4 more books are in the process. The books are both legal and christian in character.

Andrew Schatkin is presently a business and educational consultant, a teacher, writer, and speaker. He presently is the host of two radio shows with an international outreach. He has been a guest on many radio and tv shows. If you want to know more about Andrew Schatkin please feel free to consult his website schatkinshow.com where you can see his books, blogs, and podcasts.

Here is an excerpt from one of Andrew’s books, taken from the book Essays on the Christian Worldview chapter 2 entitled” Why I am Against Abortion” p 4″ The right of a woman to so called reproductive freedom now established as the law of the land has become the calling card of the modern woman. No longer, the feminist says are women to be enslaved to the accidents of biology and the mastery of macho men. With this right to so called reproductive freedom comes, if it did not come before, the right to sexual freedom. The double standard lis gone; free and unfettered sexuality is the here and now, since women no longer fear the burden and pain of childbirth and children as a result of the sexual act.

Comment by Segilola Salami: I am a woman and I am a firm believer that it is every woman’s right to decide what happens to her body. Choosing to have an abortion is not something I believe the average woman would do without first thinking it through. I cannot imagine that every woman who chooses to have an abortion did so simply because she could. A myriad of reasons have been known to affect a woman’s choice to keep or not keep a pregnancy and not because she had “free and unfettered sexuality”

Character Interview from Romantic Comedy 100 Dates and a Wedding by Stephanie Tumba

I really enjoyed reading last week’s character interview that I decided to publish another one. Today’s character interview is from the romantic comedy 100 Dates and a Wedding by Stephanie Tumba. It was published by Sté Tumba Capital on February 2018 and the French version the 22nd June 2019. It is available as a Kindle ebook (ASIN: B07HHC9YRC) and a paperback (ISBN-13: 978-1981435982). It is available in stores in French and English at Barnes & Noble, Fnac, Libraries de Paris, Grangier, Dedicaces.

book cover for Character Interview from Romantic Comedy 100 Dates and a Wedding by Stephanie Tumba

About 100 Dates and a Wedding by Stephanie Tumba

100 Dates and a Wedding by Stephanie Tumba is a romantic comedy that narrates Valérie’s dating experiences in London and shares the lessons she learnt from them. She recounts the worst of her dating experiences London offered and the lessons she learnt from them. Her disillusionments, her joys, and her own ambiguities are shared without concession. 100 Dates & a Wedding is a romantic Frenglish (mix of French and English) journal which will make your heart laugh out loud; it is filled with raw emotions and evinces the garbage culture in which we live today. Beware! 100 Dates and a Wedding doesn’t bash on men, it spreads an inspirational message through Valerie’s dates: you definitely need to kiss a few frogs before getting to the right one.

Who is this character interview about and why did you choose to interview them?

Valérie is the main character of 100 Dates and a Wedding, she’s French, a young divorcee of 30 and comes from a very traditional family because of her African origins. She has been in South Kensington for 3 years and has divorced the morning of the first chapter. Valerie smokes, likes brands, has a French accent, always on heels, very cultured she is also very intelligent and understands human nature. She likes to travel, to eat, wine, dine out, dancing, and love sweets, Personality wise, She is passionate, witty, talkative (all the time an experience/story to tell), dramatic, impatient, spontaneous, and endearing. All through the book, she wonders: How do you deal with a break up after a long relationship? How to believe in love again after being defeated? How many dates does it get to find the “One”? 100? How many shags? Valérie won’t tell. How many mistakes made? Certainly plenty. Should you play the Game? Valérie never understood the rules. So how do you meet the right one then? After a few slaps on the face. Between the English’s rules of dating, the expected texts, the expected loves, the misinterpreted messages, the words over-interpreted, and the language barrier Valérie experienced the misunderstanding of love in all its splendour and the cultural clash at its worst.

The Interview

INTERVIEWER: Valérie , Why did you divorce your husband?

Valérie: Pierre, my ex-husband, lied to me. He put himself into debt behind my back to pay the bills hiding the fact that he lost his job. I felt betrayed and I could not trust him anymore. It was over.

INTERVIEWER: Did you sleep with these 100 dates? And are these dates all real?

Valérie: I did not sleep with 100 men and 90% of the dates are real, some have been romanticised and some have been borrowed from friends.

INTERVIEWER: How long did it take to you to get into a serious relationship after her divorce?

Valérie: Well, I got straight away into a serious relationship with Adrian which lasted 6 months. But, I was not ready.

INTERVIEWER: How did you break up with Sonny?

Valérie: I broke up with him at his place. I came low key and I told him I was not staying, I gave his ring back and told him that I was still in love with Cassius.

INTERVIEWER: And how did he react?

Valérie: He was the amazing gentleman he has always been, he nodded, smiled, and simply let me go.

INTERVIEWER: Why did you pick Cassius and not Sonny?

Valérie: I suppose a part of me, at the time, was more in search of a “father figure” rather than a “partner in crime” and this is what Cassius represents to me until today.

INTERVIEWER: Are you still with Cassius and do you regret Sonny?

Valérie: As we speak, I am still with Cassius and I do miss Sonny’s friendship but I do not regret my decision.

This is what she had to say about the book:

“I would recommend The Joy of Burnout to listeners of The Segilola Salami Show because it takes the concept of burnout, which many people fear, and shows how it can actually be beneficial and help someone truly find themselves after their burnout. It doesn’t promote burnout but it shows how you can support yourself and see yourself in a different light if you are burning out or have burned out. Character Interview from The Final Fence: Sophomores in The Saddle By Marc O’Brien

Normally, today’s Sunday Snippet would include a chapter from a book given to me by an author in my network. However, I thought I would try something different. So today’s post features an interview with two of the characters in the YA novel The Final Fence: Sophomores in The Saddle by author Marc O’Brien. Marc O’Brien has previously been a guest on my podcast The Segilola Salami Show. Without much ado …

FAIR QUESTIONS FOR A FEATURE STORY Is a disability something that is subjective or is it objective? Is a diagnosis opinion or fact? The Final Fence: Sophomores in the Saddle authored by Marc O’Brien takes a creative and honest look into a life filled with support due to well-meaning individuals that think before they speak. When Eddie Patrick meets up with Danielle Lynne on a college campus, a love of horses triggers a classroom discussion. When their professor-a large chestnut pony named The Great Satan-starts the lecture, the relationship skills make the grade, with the ribbon only being a decorative award. Using a backdrop of the elegant and classy world of the hunter jumper horse shows during the second Ronald Reagan presidential administration, the setting for this novel is a perfect way for the future generations to learn about respect.
After finishing their sophomore year in college Danielle Lynne Easton who was an Olympic caliber equestrian who never qualified for the Nationals and Eddie Patrick who competed on the National level in English style horse back riding sat down with an interviewer:

INTERVIEWER:  So, what is the deal with the wrist bands, Eddie?
EDDIE PATRICK:  It was a real bad day and I self-destructed, I did not have the maturity due to the education that I have today, and due to nurses like the ones studying at Southern Dominican University being at the gate and ready, I am here today a little bit more wiser.
DANIELLE LYNNE EASTON:   In plain English, he had a bad round, knocked down too many fences and had to retire, then headed to the show office, plopped down another fee for another class which has been clear so far.

INTERVIEWER: Are you two enjoying University together? Studying (pause) training?
EP:  SDCU is a wonderful supportive environment, I have a group of friends now, there is Peter King, Bobbi Barnes (pause) and Abigail my sorority big sister.
DLE: It’s perfect one hour from my Uncle’s barn and it is a beautiful campus.

INTERVIEWER: What are you looking for in your junior year?
DLE:  To get noticed by the powers that be.
EP:  Would love straight “B”’ grades.

INTERVIEWER:   Danielle Lynne, you say get noticed by the powers that be, what does that mean?
DLE:  Well, I do have a plan for the Grand Prix’s in the summer I will compete at Devon Pa, Upper Ville, VA, Lake Placid, NY then finish it with the mini prix at the Sussex County Horse Show. Then return to my Uncle’s farm to prepare for the Indoor season where hopefully I will get notice for next years Olympic Qualifier.

INTERVIEWER:   Sounds like a busy schedule, do you think the name “Easton” will play apart of getting noticed?
DLE:  Well The Great Satan does have a great strut and we look good together. That should raise some eyebrows of the powers that be.

INTERVIEWER:  Eddie are you going to have that same regimented schedule as the Olympic dreamer?
EP:  I am also riding her horse The Great Satan, but it will be in local horse shows in South Florida.

INTERVIEWER:    Are you looking to get noticed?
EP:  Actually, I am just trying to stay on the right diagonal when competing in the flat classes.
DLE:  From a photogenic standpoint Eddie looks great in the saddle. Since I am practicing for the bigger shows, I am not concerned with any local championships, so I ride in the jumper division and Eddie rides in the flat.

INTERVIEWER:  Such an interesting educational comparison. A rider who did not compete in National competition due to subjective selections but has Olympic caliber potential with an objective decision-making competing on the same horse with a disabled equestrian who represented his home state in National competition.
EP:  And won.

INTERVIEWER:  And won. Danielle Lynne what are you studying?
DL:  How to think.

INTERVIEWER:  Eddie.
EP:  How To communicate.

INTERVIEWER:   What a wonderful combination for a feature story.

As a book lover myself, I absolutely love CHARACTER INTERVIEWS. The author in me knows that there’s so much more to a character than what is written in a book. I love knowing more about how the characters see themselves.

Today’s Sunday Snippet is from the family and personal growth book Paint Your Hair Blue – A Celebration of Life with Hope for Tomorrow in the Face of Pediatric Cancer by Sue Matthews and her sister, Andrea Cohane. It is a 248 page book published by Morgan James Publishing on February 6, 2018. It is available as both an Amazon Kindle ebook (ASIN: B079FJ6621) and a paperback book (ISBN-13: 978-1683507277).

Synopsis of Paint Your Hair Blue – A Celebration of Life with Hope for Tomorrow in the Face of Pediatric Cancer

book cover blog post banner art graphics Sunday Snippet: Paint Your Hair Blue - A Celebration of Life with Hope for Tomorrow in the Face of Pediatric Cancer by Sue Matthews and her sister, Andrea CohaneIf you’ve ever loved someone with all your strength, mind, heart, and soul, Paint Your Hair Blue: A Celebration of Life with Hope for Tomorrow in the Face of Pediatric Cancer, by Sue Matthews with her sister Andrea Cohane, will appeal to you. In this book—this love story—Matthews tells a deeply personal story about her young daughter’s determination to stay alive despite the onslaught of pediatric cancer. Your heart will break and soar, sometimes simultaneously, as you learn about Taylor’s fierce courage and unremitting resolve to not permit cancer to scar her spirit along with her body. As much as any drug or medical protocol, readers quickly realize that Taylor’s best medicine, and the one that worked better than any other, was the lavish and unconditional love of her father, mother, and sisters. You will come away from the book with a vivid understanding of how truly short and precious life is and a greater willingness to add more color as we go along.

Today’s Snippet from Paint Your Hair Blue is from the Chapter: Mischief on 68th Street

After several very scary days immediately following my daughter, Taylor’s lung surgery seemed to be perking up.

Anyone working in a surgical unit knows that preventing complications from surgery and jump starting one’s recovery requires getting the patient out of bed and mobile as soon as possible. From the very first moment Taylor could stand the pain and bear the risk, she was walking. She didn’t like it, and she didn’t do it without protest. Getting her to walk against her wishes took more than pronouncement; it took intense negotiation and persuasion. Telling Taylor what to do was the surest way to ensure it would not happen. Donald Trump would have been easier to negotiate with.

It was still August; the weather was warm, and the city was quiet. Sun washed the floor in her hospital room at the end of the day. Every twenty minutes or so, the nurses would pop in, saying, “Remember, Taylor; you owe us one more walk.” Taylor would listen, wave them off, and turn her head.

On the last attempt, the senior nurse came to push Taylor—and push her hard. She played the integrity card: “Taylor, you promised one more walk today.” The nurse tried to make the walk sound appealing by suggesting that Taylor walk outside for some fresh air. Taylor was uncharacteristically immune to the nurse’s appeal. She turned away again. The nurse looked to my husband, Bob, for an assist. He told the nurse, “Leave it to me.” He knew his audience.

“Tales,” he said, “they want a walk? Let’s give them a walk they’ll never forget.” She was intrigued. He had her attention now and could see her impish grin. “They think we should go outside? Let’s go outside!” Taylor began giggling, knowing she was part of a scheme created by Bob. “Tales,” he said, “let’s go get some ice cream!” Tales was as energized and as upbeat as she had been in a while.

Since I wasn’t there at the time, Bob told me all about it later. “She fidgeted, while suppressing her giggles and excitement as they mundanely moved the IV lines, disconnected the wires, and set up the mobile IV pole.” The nurses couldn’t believe her change in enthusiasm. They waved and called out, “You go, girl! Take your time and walk as much as you like!” Tales didn’t hear a word. She was laboring, tired, and in pain, but she was giddy. She was on a mission.

When the elevator opened on the ground floor, Tales headed for the main entrance onto York Avenue. Bob remembers the smell of cigarette smoke filling his nose as they passed a pack of hospital patients getting some air—most of them, unbelievably, smoking. Taylor never noticed or flinched. She skillfully kept walking, turning left at the corner of 68th Street and heading uphill toward First Avenue. This was one heck of a walk!

Tales was still in her hospital gown, a thin gray smock with the back wide open, exposing blood seeping through the bandages. Her underwear was like a flag waving in the back as she pushed her IV pole laden with three bags. She looked to any passersby like an escapee from a mental institution, and Bob remembers thinking that they wouldn’t have been completely wrong. But this was New York City, home of the good, the bad, and the ugly, and a half-naked insane person strutting down the street wasn’t that shocking.

She should have been afraid of the uphill walk and the physical effort, but instead she was delighted at calling the shots and once more poking her finger in the eye of the giant. People on the street stopped, stared, and then applauded. Cabs tooted their horns, maybe thinking she was a nut or maybe congratulating her. Passengers opened windows to cheer her. They all laughed like it was a publicity stunt. She walked all the way up that hill, huffing and puffing, turned right onto First Avenue, and kept walking. First Avenue is far busier than York Avenue, so there was even more commotion. Taylor was clearly tired but elated and felt in control.

The truth is, neither Bob nor Taylor knew exactly where the ice cream store was. Bob asked Taylor, “Do we turn left or right?” They weren’t sure how far they had to go, but really, this wasn’t about the ice cream. They were taking a walk, Taylor style.

Bob watched as sweat accumulated on Taylor’s brow and she began to look a little pale. Her little body was asking for a break. The point was made. The ice cream seemed to get farther away with each step. She was still smiling and enjoying the street attention, but she was ready to go back to her bed for some care and monitoring. Bob said, “This was the plan all along—take the walk, make a point, and return triumphantly, demonstrating who was in control.” Adventure over. Taylor, 1; hospital, 0.

Downhill was obviously easier, and I’m sure she felt more secure knowing she was on the way back toward comfort and care. What Bob didn’t know was that the nursing staff had begun to panic. After all, a post-surgical patient can only walk so far. The nurses started asking the patients on the street, “Did you see a young girl passing by?” I guess someone recalled her “turning left a while ago.” Now they really hit the panic button. Security was called, and a search was initiated. They were missing a very sick patient who was under their care.

Around that time, I received a call on my cell phone and heard a very angry voice ask me, “Do you know where your daughter is? She has been off the floor for a significant amount of time, and, Mrs. Matthews, you do understand how sick she is!” I asked, “Who are you?” The person on the other end declared, in an arrogant and aggressive tone, “This is security!” I replied, calmly and perhaps a little smugly, “Yes, I understand she is very ill, but if she is with her dad, I am sure all is well.” Of course, this only infuriated them more.

In the meantime, Bob and Tales were gliding downhill toward York Avenue when suddenly they saw two very angry security guards trudging up the hill. Laughing, Bob said, “These guys weren’t exactly physical specimens, so the hill was no bargain for them. They were sweating more than Tales was. And they were clearly out of breath.”

Watching two very perturbed and portly security guards running uphill looking for her was the perfect end to the walk. The more she laughed, the angrier the guards got, until they finally reached her. By now, anyone could look at the scene and put some of this together. Those watching whooped or gave her a thumbs-up. The guards chuckled, too. It was hard not to laugh along with Bob and Taylor. Bob remembers Tales being in her glory as she strolled past the security guards with her head held high.

Two very pissed-off nurses were waiting when they got back to her hospital floor. Tales tried not to antagonize them and painstakingly held in her laughter, but both she and Bob looked like the proverbial “cats who ate the canary,” sporting huge grins. Neither of them spoke a word as Bob tried not to look at the nurses. The head nurse blurted out, “Where have you been?” and that was all Tales could take. The giggles took over, and all she could get out was “ice cream.” She kept walking. Bob kept walking. The nurses trailed behind, clearly feeling dismissed. As they glared at Bob, looking for an explanation, he just held his hands up with a shrug, saying, “She took a walk, just like you asked.” Uncharacteristically, Tales said nothing. She was triumphant but clearly running on fumes.

Moving her to the bed and re-establishing all of her wires and tubes was done with a constant drone of criticism for taking such risks and worrying everyone. Sometimes it was directed at Bob and sometimes at Taylor. Tales just smiled, but the nurses were starting to hit a nerve. She glanced at them with her “you’re boring me” look and said, “I’m sorry you were so worried, but my dad was with me. You told me I could walk as much as I wanted, and you told me I could go outside. So, I did.” She turned away and closed her eyes, as she reached for Bob’s hand.

Instantly Bob felt warm all over, as emotion and pride rose up and pulsated throughout his veins. As she held his hand, he knew how much she appreciated him taking her on their adventure and that she was glad he was staying with her that night. But he couldn’t help but think that by not letting his hand go, she was also protecting him from the nurses who were anxious to have a private word with him. She was fast asleep in minutes, clearly wiped out and exhausted. But she never let go.

Bob tells me that sometimes when he closes his eyes, he can still feel her hand in his.
