USAF F-4C Phantom shot down by North Vietnamese SAM

In July 1966 a USAF F-4C Phantom  was shot down by a North Vietnamese SAM-2 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Hanoi.

This was the first loss of a U.S. aircraft to a Vietnamese surface-to-air missile in the Vietnam War.

US Bombs Hanoi

In June 1966 U.S. aircraft bombed the major North Vietnamese population centers of Hanoi and Haiphong for the first time, destroying oil depots located near the two cities.

James Meredith Shot in Solo Civil Rights March 

In June 1966 James Meredith planned a solo 220-mile  March Against Fear from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi to highlight continuing racism in the South and encourage voter registration. On the second day, he was shot by a white sniper and suffered numerous wounds.

Russian Venera 3 Lands on Venus

In March 1966 after a course correction, the Russian space probe Venera 3 crashed on Venus as the first space probe to hit the surface of another planet.
