US Surgeon General Report on Smoking & Health

 A report released by the Surgeon General of the United States in January 1964 concluded that lung cancer and chronic bronchitis are causally related to cigarette smoking. The report also suggested evidence for a causative role of smoking in other illnesses such as emphysema, cardiovascular disease, and various types of cancer.

Christmas Flood 1964  

The Christmas flood of 1964 affected the Pacific Northwest and some of Northern California. Continuing until January 7, it resulted in 19 deaths, serious damage to buildings, roads and bridges, and the loss of 4,000 head of livestock.

 Vietcong Bomb Saigon Brinks Hotel 

In December 1964 bombing of the Brinks Hotel  (Bachelor Offices Quarters) in Saigon by the Viet Cong, resulted in the deaths of two US soldiers and injuries to a further 60 people, including civilians.
