US Surgeon General Report on Smoking & Health

 A report released by the Surgeon General of the United States in January 1964 concluded that lung cancer and chronic bronchitis are causally related to cigarette smoking. The report also suggested evidence for a causative role of smoking in other illnesses such as emphysema, cardiovascular disease, and various types of cancer.

Christmas Flood 1964

Vietcong Bomb Saigon Brinks Hotel

In December 1964 bombing of the Brinks Hotel  (Bachelor Offices Quarters) in Saigon by the Viet Cong, resulted in the deaths of two US soldiers and injuries to a further 60 people, including civilians.

MLK Receives Nobel Peace Prize

In November 1964 the  Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the American Baptist minister and activist Martin Luther King Jr.  “for his non-violent struggle for civil rights for the Afro-American population.”
