In February 1964 in Miami Beach, Florida Cassius Clay, an 8–1 underdog, beat heavyweight champion Sonny Liston in a major upset, when the champion gave up at the opening of the seventh round.

Political Upheaval in South Vietnam

The November 1963 in a military coup (with the tacit approval of the US) produced a period of political instability for the Saigon government.

General Dương Văn Minh became president, but was removed in January 1964 by General Nguyễn Khánh. General Kanh was subsequently ousted and exiled from South Vietnam in 1965.

USAF T-39 shot down by a MiG-19

In January 1964, an unarmed USAF  T-39 Sabreliner on a training mission over Erfurt, East Germany was shot down by a MiG-19 jet fighter of the Soviet Air Force. 

All three occupants of the aircraft were killed, becoming direct casualties of the Cold War in Europe.

Surgeon General Report on Smoking

In January 1964 the United States Surgeon General alerted the nation to the health risk of smoking and transformed the issue from one of individual choice, to one of epidemiology, public health, and risk for smokers and non-smokers alike.

Panama Canal Crisis

In January 1964 armed clashes between United States troops and Panamanian civilians in the Panama Canal Zone resulted in the deaths of 21 civilians and 4 US soldiers.

The incident is considered to be a significant factor in the 1977 U.S. decision to transfer control of the Canal Zone to Panama.

Lee Harvey Oswald Killed

In November 1963, two days after shooting President John F. Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald was fatally shot by Jack Ruby in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters.

In September 1964, the Warren Commission came to the controversial conclusion that Oswald had acted alone when assassinating Kennedy. Although controversial, the conclusion was supported by investigations from the Dallas Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation , the United States Secret Service, and the House Select Committee on Assassinations.

Walter Cronkite Reports JFK Assassination

On November 22, 1963, US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a presidential motorcade through Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was fatally shot from the nearby Texas School Book Depository by former U.S. Marine Lee Harvey Oswald. The motorcade rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where Kennedy was pronounced dead.

1963 South Vietnamese Coup

In November 1963, President Ngô Đình Diệm was deposed by a group of CIA-backed Army of the Republic of Vietnam officers who disagreed with Diệm’s handling of the Buddhist crisis and the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong threat to South Vietnam.

The coup, led by General Dương Văn Minh,  captured and executed Diem along with his brother and advisor Ngô Đình Nhu.
