April Fool with The Martian Zombie

The Martian Zombie is out!!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PWHSG8TAn here an excerpt for you :)
PERSONAL LOG: SOL 4
Acidalia Planitia, Mars
YOU CAN’T BECOME an astronaut unless you have the brains, that’s what everyone at NASA used to say. But now the slogan has changed. Now it’s: You can’t become an astronaut unless you eat brains.Yep. Zombies are all the rage at the moment. Zombie is the new sexy. This is how I became an astronaut and was shipped far away from Earth.Four zombies, one human. Nope, I’m not the human, and yes, I do eat brains. My name is Mike Addison, Ensign, biologist, mechanical engineer, and I’m about to describe myself, because this is NOT a novel. It’s the personal log I’m supposed to record for NASA every day. Although I’m not sure there’s a point to continuing to make entries, but I’m going to do it anyway. For posterity. So I can totally take a minute to describe myself.I have brown hair so curly not even the experimental centrifuge of NASA could make it messier. Grey-green skin. One of my eyes is milky blue, which freaks many people out—as if the eating brains part isn’t scarier. But the milky eye isn’t dead. In fact, I see better from that eye. My other eye is chocolate brown. My mum thinks I’m a great guy. Really, I’m pretty ordinary. Perhaps a little smarter than your average zombie. I guess you could say NASA chose me because of my brain, which is kind of ironic.Officially, our mission began eight months ago when we left Earth on the Zeus, our long-distance cruising spaceship currently parked in orbit around Mars. Three days ago (Sol 1), my crewmates and I touched down on Mars’s surface in the MAM, our landing shuttle—too much bumping and jumping if you ask me. The aeronautic folks at NASA should work on providing better suspensions.Waiting planet-side for us were all the supplies we needed to set up our solar grid, water reclamation unit, and ZAC (Zombie Aggregation Center), the white, premade, inflatable, some-assembly-required hub. I laughed the first time I saw it. It’s like a padded igloo with some bumps and alcoves that’s supposed to separate us from the extremely cold and unbearably red environment of Mars for the thirty-one-day duration of our mission.Home away from home. Our mission title? Hades 4. Yes, Hades 4. They named our mission after the Greek god of the dead since the crew is mostly undead. Fitting, isn’t it?And yep, there were three previous Hades missions before us.It all started back in 2032 after that astronaut guy—you might remember him—got stranded up here on his own, and NASA figured out sending zombies to Mars was less risky and would cost a whole lot less than dealing with humans.Sure, it might sound a little crazy, but think about it. Zombies don’t breathe oxygen. We don’t care if the temperature drops to -160 C degrees, and unlike some other undead creatures I could mention, we’re just fine with sunlight. Give us an endless supply of dried brain slices, and we can go on forever. So why not send zombies to Mars to explore and prep the groundwork for future human missions? We’re ideal! We don’t even need spacesuits! It all sounded fantastic. NASA got to work recruiting, and Hades 1 launched a couple of years later.Problem was that, yes, zombies don’t use oxygen . . . technically, although we need an atmosphere with at least 2% of oxygen while humans live well with 21%. What NASA didn’t foresee was the effect of Mars’s strong winds on the undead’s bodies.Mars has pretty strong winds. We’re talking about 170 Kmh. That’s like a Formula 1 car. And it’s not just wind, but sand and rocks, etc. The entire zombie crew of Hades 1, dressed in jeans and t-shirts, dissolved into the red oblivion of Mars during a single sand storm. Poof.Goodbye Hades 1.For Hades 2, NASA got smarter. They provided the crew with a modified Extravehicular Activity suit called ADAMZ (Automated Dynamic Application Model for Zombies). Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: NASA’s not very original when it comes to naming things. The ADAMZ suit is basically your average spacesuit without all the complicated tubes and valves an EVA suit usually comes equipped with. No filters to clean the air from CO2, no oxygen pump, no heating, but—and this is the important part—it’s weighted down and reinforced to withstand winds up to 300 Kmh. Impressive. The suit’s heavy and scratches my skin when I put it on, but hey, I don’t want to be turned into dust. Heavy and itchy I can handle. So, what happened to Hades 2? The problem was food.NASA packed tons of dried brain slices and flakes and preserved them in citric acid (lemon juice, in case you didn’t pay attention to your science teacher in high school. I didn’t because I couldn’t stop thinking about eating my teacher’s brain, but hey, I’ve got a medical condition. What’s your excuse?)It turned out that zombies are highly allergic to lemon juice in Mars’s gravity and low atmospheric pressure. Harmless on Earth, but here it’s like venom. Lemon juice dried out the crew and shriveled them to the size of raisins. Nasty way to go.So, goodbye to Hades 2.Hades 3’s failure was more subtle. ADAMZ suits worked fine. Dried brain was stored in a new kind of harmless gel. Everything seemed perfect. Except for one thing.Apparently, zombies do need water after all. The brains we eat consist mostly of water, about 70%, and dried brain has barely 5% of it. After twenty Sols (Mars’s days are longer than Earth’s days by 39 minutes) the crew of Hades 3 died of dehydration. Adios Hades 3.Which brings us to my mission, Hades 4, and how I came to be here on Mars.Oh, and that pyramid-shaped thing rising into the sky behind the ZAC? Remember the landing shuttle? The MAM? That’s my crewmates taking off without me. Unbelievable.Yep, I’m seriously fricked, fracked, fu—you know what I mean.Stuck on Mars. To survive, I’ll have to rely on my wits.Good thing I’m already dead.

Cover Reveal!

Publication date: June 4th 2019

Two months have passed since Derek Areios—war-scion and heir of Ares—and the band of rogue scions he’s aligned with recovered both the Thunderbolt of Zeus and the Heart of the Devourer and returned them to the Gods. During the battle, Derek discovered he could control not only the element of fire, as all war-scions can, but also the dark element “aether,” making him the only scion alive to wield two types of elemental magic.
Commanded by Zeus to retrieve the Trinity Weapons and the Shards of Cronus, Derek and the rogue scions are thwarted in their goal by a gang of water-scions with a grudge against one of the rogues—Thea, heir of Poseidon. Both groups travel to an uninhabited island to recover one of the Shards––the Eye that belonged to Cronus, King of the Titans. But what they encounter will lead them down a path of brutal betrayals, hard truths, painful memories, and desperate actions.
With angry and impatient gods breathing down his neck, a curse that allows Ares to control him, a prophecy he’s desperate to avoid, a magic spear corrupting his thoughts, and two forms of elemental magic, Derek has a lot of baggage—and a lot of power. Will the price of using that power to satisfy the Gods be too much for him to pay?
Mythological monsters, explosive magic, and devastating truths take center stage in the second novel of the action-packed AREIOS BROTHERS series from Amy Braun.

Brit Lunden is a prolific author who’s written over 50 books in assorted genres under different pen names. Bulwark was her first effort in adult fiction and was chosen by several of her fellow authors as the basis for a new series, A Bulwark Anthology. Using her characters, they are creating new denizens in spin-off stories to this bizarre town. Brit Lunden lives on Long Island in a house full of helpful ghosts.

1- Tell us about yourself? My name is Brit Lunden and I am best known for authoring over fifty children's books under the pen name Carole P. Roman. I am both a traditional and self-published author. I have published multiple genres, ranging from children's fiction and nonfiction, early reader chapter books, children's rhyming books, as well as, self-help marketing and promotion for indie authors. I am the host of three monthly blog radio shows, have founded an online magazine with author, RL Jackson called Indie Author's Monthly, and handle the promotion and marketing for my son's books. Oh, and I have a day job. I am the CEO of a thriving transportation company.
2- What changes did 2019 bring to your writing? While I have written many award-winning books, the majority of them were children's books. Last year I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and I published my first adult fiction. Bulwark received great reviews and imagine my delight when a group of seven authors asked if they could continue its story. I have decided to move into adult fiction and am planning to continue with this genre.
3- Why did you do an anthology? Was it harder or easier than writing a full out novel? What was the hardest part? Originally Bulwark was created for an anthology with another group of authors. No one met the deadline for publication, so I decided to publish it as a standalone. My book was the first in the anthology, so I created lots of "hooks" for the other authors to pull a story. There were hints of ghosts, vampires, and other things that go bump in the night. I sent it to Kirkus, BookTrib, and Foreword. The reviews were encouraging, especially when BookTrib said it was like, "Hansel and Gretel Meet Friday the 13th."
I was delighted when RL came up with the idea of using Bulwark for a new anthology and when I flipped open my book, I landed on chapter 2 and knew JB was going to be my contribution.
I like the idea of these short bursts of stories. They are quick and easy to produce. The hardest part is tying up all the loose ends in a short book, but also, I find I forget my stories as soon as they are written. I had to keep going back to see what I did in the first book and make sure everything matched.
4- How did you come up with your story? I never come up with a story. When I agreed to write in the first anthology, I started with a scene in my mind. Sheriff Clay Finnes spoke to me, and before I knew it, a whole cast of characters jumped out from this fractured Mayberry town. I loved them all, from the slow-witted deputy to the town harlot, Dana Dalton. I don't plan my plots. My characters take over and tell me where they want to go. I actually had no idea there was going to be a witch when I started, and I certainly hadn't planned the two endings. I think I wrote the entire book in little more than four hours, but then comes the hard work of tying it all together.
5- What is the hardest part of being an indie? The setbacks of trying to get word of your work out there. I think the idea of an anthology is a great way to showcase authors who can't afford the crazy expense of promotion. Sharing social media helps defray both time and money, as well as expose the author to a new and diverse audience.
6- Do you stay with one genre, or jump around? I am a genre jumper in both reading and writing. I love trying new books, different authors, or diving into a genre I've never read before. I love the challenge of writing in different voices, in these new genres. I think it's fun to be discovered by fresh readers who may not read my other work and maybe will take a chance because they've enjoyed something I've written.
7- Share the process of this collaboration? What inspired you from the original story and how did you marry it to your own work? JB Straton called out to me from the moment I opened Bulwark to look for a character to write. He is an ex-football star. Now I want to add, I have never watched a football game. For a minute, I thought I was nuts, taking a sports person and trying to write about his life, but the human condition is universal, and JB's story is sweet and tender. On a personal note, I lost my husband and soulmate last year. I think much of what I was processing may have come out in the story. I haven’t reread it yet. I’m planning to and I think I will discover much about my own feelings of grief and loss in these pages.
DJ Cooper wrote one of my favorite books last year. I was delighted when she took on Dr. Kent and Terence, two of my favorite characters. I adore her humor. RL Jackson has to be the Queen of Vampire stories, and I was over the moon with her strong female characters which she manages to fill with both sweetness and spice in a delicious mixture. Her books bring a totally new element to the genre. E.H. Graham is a children's author like me, and dove into the anthology by contributing a Hitchcock- like thriller with a twisty ending kept me engaged to the end. Kay Macleod brought elegance with her chilling story and fleshed out interesting characters. Kate Kelly's gritty tale of a sensitive professional fighter was as unexpected as it was fantastic. Del Henderson's contribution takes the reader back to the Civil War with haunting and intrepid realism. I am proud of my assistant, Brittney Leigh who had penned her debut novella with us. She bravely jumped into the venture producing a creepy tale with charming characters.
8- Would you do another anthology? Yes! In a heartbeat. It is far easier to pump out shorter books, and I do think readers enjoy these characters continuing on.
9- What trends do you see in indie books? I think many authors are using continuing stories and producing shorter books almost like the 'penny dreadfuls' of the last century. These were series that were published in newspapers by famous authors. People waited for them and eagerly bought the newspapers to continue the stories.
10- What makes your books stand out from the sea of indie authors out there? I think our group is diverse and multitalented. Each author bright a fresh style that compliments the entire series taking it to unimaginable places. They are the true voice of indie, untouched by media people who might reshape their talents for mass consumption. Indie authors reflect what real people are thinking, not a sanitized version. In the distant future when historians will try to understand out times, these are the works they will study- they are the reality of our lives.
I think we should all do this for each other on our social media. I will start running this as soon as we do the last video- so we can feature both. I will also put this on my mail chimp every other day.

An interview with DJ Cooper
1- Tell us about yourself?I’m DJ Cooper and I’m very tired! I live in South East England, I’m married and I have two teenagers. I have successfully run my own business from home for the last eighteen years. For the last few years, I’ve juggled that business, family life, and writing.
2- What changes did 2019 bring to your writing?I got to call myself an award-winning author for Missing Remnants thanks to Indie Authors Monthly magazine. I never expected that to happen, so thank you IAM. This year is the first time in recent years I’ve written something set on contemporary Earth. The town of Bulwark is not real but the setting was small-town America rather than in space or on an alien planet where I usually set a story.
3- Why did you do an anthology? Was it harder or easier than writing a full out novel? What was the hardest part? Why? Exposure. Pure and simple. The more places you can showcase your work, the more chances you have of enticing one more reader into your world. The story for the anthology was shorter than a novel, so that part was easier. The anthology was challenging because it had a deadline, I don’t usually write to a deadline. I was also writing characters I did not create so I was mindful of building on them in a way that was credible. Another challenge was writing about something in America. I’m English. We wear trousers over here, pants are underwear. Everything had to be written with American terminology in mind.
4- How did you come up with your story? There were snippets in the original story that sparked something in my imagination. The original contained aspects of Hansel and Gretel. I watched a TV programme called Mr Benn when I was a child. A man walks into a costume shop, tries on a costume, walks through a door and has an adventure. Of course, when I re-watched Mr Benn recently, I found I’d not remembered any of it correctly and I’d written something completely different but that’s not a bad thing.
5- what is the hardest part of being an indie?Promotion and marketing. The trouble with being an indie is that you have to coordinate everything. Even if you’re passing things like editing and cover design over to a third party, an indie author is the publisher. We are responsible for everything. I wonder how many of us wish we could just write the book and have someone else do the rest for us. I know I do. Marketing is something that can be costly, hit and miss with results and just a completely alien thing for a lot of us to undertake. We have to promote ourselves. I’m sure there are many authors uncomfortable with the concept of waving their arms in the air and screaming I’m over here, look at me.
6- Do you stay with one genre, or jump around?I can’t even live in this reality, let alone write in one genre! I am happier when I’m not constrained to only one thing. I always have been. Writing flows easier and quicker for me when I am not tied to a single genre. I’ll write science fiction, but it’ll have aspects of horror and humour. I’ll write horror but it’ll also have humour because people crack jokes in real life and the same person can also experience something horrific. I write a mixture of things, but I find that’s more realistic despite some of my more unrealistic settings. Humans are humans whether they’re on this planet or you’ve imagined them in space.
7- Share the process of this collaboration? What inspired you from the original story and how did you marry it to your own work? The original story has a theme of weird things happening when a pool of green water is present. There were also modern-day characters who appeared to be from different eras. I kept those themes running through my story whilst also creating something that could be read as a standalone work.
8- Would you do another anthology?Yes, I think collaborating on an anthology is a great way to showcase what an author can do. Every author has a different set of readers they can reach. A collaboration means an author has a greater chance of reaching a wider audience.
9- What trends do you see in indie books? There’s a lot of them! Both trends and indie books. It’s very difficult to be seen. I’ve seen authors try many things. Free is a massive trend at the moment. I’m hearing more and more authors refusing to give their books away for free because they’ve spent money getting them to the market in the first place. Competition is fierce and always will be. I don’t think the trend of hard work will ever change.
10- What makes your books stand out from the sea of indie authors out there?I’m not unique, but I have a relatable author’s voice. I have a flair for humour and an ability to write a scene in a way that doesn’t drag. I zone out of books I read that interrupt the flow of action with passages of the description which don’t seem to move the story on. So, I like to avoid writing the things that bore me as a reader. We all have different preferences and that’s why there is potential for every decent author to find the readers who appreciate their work.
