More indie behind-the-scenes: don’t be taken in
I have seen a few posts on Twitter from new-to-indie authors about their estimated or actual expenditures, and they’ve made me somewhat alarmed. Publishing an indie bookdoes have some up-front expenses, but by no means should they break your bank. The quote I’ve seen most frequently tossed around is that an average indie book will cost you $1000, but that includes editing and marketing expenses! Editing is the biggest expense of publishing, so if your book is costing $1000 with editing costs...

Some indie behind-the-scenes: distributors
I recently agreed to teach a publishing class at a local college—yay! I never thought I would ever get back into teaching, and yet here we are. Life is full of surprises. Anyway, in the process of getting my lesson plans together, I realized that I’ve been hoarding a vast quantity of publishing tips, practices and tidbits, and this blog might be a good place to share some of them, if anyone’s interested! So today, I’m going to talk about distributors.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with...

YA Pride: Indie edition!
June is Pride month, and to celebrate, there have been a lot of readinglists floating around the internet. But I noticed that most of the recommended books (especially for YA) have been limited to traditionally published (and especially Big 5) books. But there are a lot of fantastic self-published/indie/small press books out there as well that readers looking to show their Pride this month would be sure to love! So I took to Twitter to ask for some recommendations, and got an overwhelming res...

Fourth World is joining the resistance!
Some brighter news today: I’m participating in a big 99¢-and-less sale with a group of my friends from the LFA. The saleruns from tomorrow (May 18) through the 20th!
The LFA—or, as I affectionately refer to them, “Henry’s Anarchy Brigade”—is where I made a lot of my first connections as a writer. My first short story, the Iamos tie-in “The Choice,” was featured in their anthology Imagining Liberty. I also originally intended to submit my short “Gale” (from Perchance to Dream) to George’sDefia...

Knowing your limits
I’ve always been the sort of person who likes to have a lot of different things to do. Working on just one thing tends to make me stagnate, so I like to juggle multiple projects, to keep everything fresh and me invigorated. I always thrived under these conditions when I was in school and through my twenties, so I guess I figured I’d always be able to keep it up.
I should have known better. Because the thing is, yeah, maybe that worked when I was in college and was in good health. But I’m not...

WIP Snippets: Seventh Line
I saw this cool meme floating around, and I knew it was too much fun to skip! The rules were as follows:
Go to the seventh line on the seventh page of your WIP and share a little of what you’re working on. Then tag seven writers to spread the fun!
So, here are a few paragraphs from my two current WIPs, beginning aroundthe seventh line on the seventh page (since one of them, the seventh line was the end of a paragraph XD). Enjoy!
Excerpt 1: From mycurrently-untitled NA f/f sci-fi action-comedy...
