#27 (Dedicated to Josh who was taught that Pope is totally uncool)
"I think she always nursed a small mad hope.
I'd finished recently my book on Pope."
-Nabokov
The clang of the dumpster this morning
and the stutter-flap of a hawk in wind
could as easily be the sound of a page turning.
Quelle difference! Pope was like a kid
because he built himself a playground
of shells and mirrors, and down he went
every morning, slap of the metal trap
of his mind banging shut behind him.

"S—
If you go a block east on Milk Street from the intersection
of Congress and Milk,
There's a clairvoyant whom I gave my hands."
-Kristi Maxwell
In Boston waves crash all day on the shoreline
of hasty congress: body meets thinking as in,
which train to take to get to Milk Street? Begin
by mapping the route, then convince the opine
corpus to go, even if it's unwilling. Such flashes
of assembly happen by chance, for instance, speaking
to a voice over the phone, the mind will leak

Now that we're winding down, it's thrilling to think I'll have twenty-odd poems to work on over the summer thanks to NaWriPoMo. I've appreciated the discipline involved, the fresh thinking and fresh approaches duress brings, and, of course, the wonderful stuff you, fellow writers, have produced and kindly shared with me.
Cool.
In other news, I bought Elvis Costello's Spectacle (the complete first season) for Josh's birthday, and boy was it was nice (in Episode 1) to hear Elton John praise La...

"There was a woman from the north
picked up a stone from the earth.
When the stone began to dream
it was a flower folded in."
-Alice Oswald
Collapsible so as not to injure
(it does), a falling magnolia folds in,
drops to pavement: an erasure
of the flower spring says it's been:
particular, dressed in its own white
sort-of wedding gown, sort-of bluish-foam.

"What he had said came back to him.
Sectioned seat, sectioned seat.
The lift caught wind and swayed him in.
Big armoire, big armoire."
-Susan Wheeler
Stuff of our baby years, we won't recognize
sometimes when it comes like an elevator
to lift us up and up: a sister's ex
when you were three and he was twenty
all big arms, wrapping paper and clowns.
But you were a boy, so this isn't right.
For you it was guns, I hear, dead squirrels

"The whole town by the ruins oft did walk;
no better place for ash than where it burnt."
-Julie Sheehan
Flummoxed by the flattened earth, our bonfire
grows up. It would rather spread but cannot.
Somewhere there's water, and a ferryboat.
Somewhere there's a restaurant called "Tall Mast"
though it has none or, at least, none attached
to a sea-going ship. Restaurants are
mostly bound and land-locked. Knowing this,

I'm so behind on the poems it's gross.
Josh and I got to meet the wonderful Matt Guenette this past Sunday/Monday. (Thanks, Sophia!!) We had a delicious dinner Sunday night in German Village with mysteriously striped-ladies who all said "bonjour" to the waiter as they walked in. Then yesterday, there was a fun-tastic reading at CCAD. Our students obviously loved it so much, to keep Matt talking, they asked him things like, "what's your favorite cheese?" The answer, dear readers, was pepper jac...
