Defense Against Misinformed Parenting Advice

Defense Against Misinformed Parenting Advice:

A couple of years ago, I spitballed a post idea with the guys from @how2beadad. The finished version racked up more then 100,000 shares and they thanked me with a bottle of awesome whiskey that lasted about an afternoon.

If you hate getting unsolicited parenting advice, this post it for you. (Badgers not included.)

5 big takeaways from a new study linking personality type to parenting style.

5 big takeaways from a new study linking personality type to parenting style.:

There’s a ton of data in this recent report from Truity about how personality types affect parenting. They turned it into a handy-dandy infographic, but it’s still a lot to take in, so Upworthy collected the highlights for everyone.

The study doesn’t make judgments about people or the results, but rather presents interesting commonalities and dissimilarities when it comes to how we raise our kids, what’s important to us, etc. It even tackles how parents see each other and themselves. From the report:

Perhaps a more constructive way of thinking about how we gravitate towards different
family roles would be to understand these choices as reflective of an individual’s talents,
strengths, and needs. Caring for children is a particular type of work, and just as with any
type of work, some people will be more naturally suited for it—and find it more personally
rewarding—than others.

I dig that a lot (and I’ve been saying it forever, just FYI—thanks for catching up, science!) because it stresses the importance of not comparing yourself to others. It shows we each have things at which we’re good.

The highlights are definitely worth a look, especially if you need reassurance that you’re doing okay as a parent. Because you totally are. Science says so.

Remember how I mentioned I’d be speaking at the 2016 Dad 2.0 Summit? No? I’ll be speaking at the Dad 2.0 Summit. There, now you’re caught up.

Anyway, I’m leading a roundtable discussion on book publishing since I’m a super-important international bestselling author, fancy dresser, and bon vivant. So, attendees can chat with me at the consecutive roundtable sessions about whatever publishing-related questions they have. Yay!

Dumb-Ass Stuff We Need To Stop Saying To Dads

Dumb-Ass Stuff We Need To Stop Saying To Dads:

A-fucking-men.

This message has been the battle cry for the online dad community for years. Yet Madison Ave., Hollywood, Wall Street and DC all seem to think we’re still in the 1940s. Thankfully, the ever-growing popularity of parenting bloggers is leading to an overdue cultural shift.

After a months long barrage from dad bloggers, the U.S. arm of Amazon Mom quietly changed its name to Amazon Family. More often than not, cutesy memes showing dads as inept caregivers are met not with laughter, but with an eye roll
from both men and women. Mom bloggers continuously shout the praises of their male counterparts and peers.

So, now that it’s sinking in, let me say this again to advertisers, producers, investors and politicians:

Dads are parents. We care. We matter. And just to drive it home, I’ll also point out that we buy things and vote, so you‘d better step up your game when addressing parents.
