Kids' Grades Can Suffer When Mom Or Dad Is Depressed:

I’ve written before about how I sought therapy for depression while I was a work-at-home father. (I’ll reblog that post later, too, just to put it back in some feeds.)

The results of a recent study can be seen as a confirmation of my fears and the fears of a lot of other parents waging the same battle: Your depression does affect your kids. But, there’s hope.

The study also found that treatment, such as my therapy, can help both you and your kid. Taking care of your self, working on coping with your depression, can alleviate the negative effects. Here’s a quote from epidemiologist Myrna Weissman, of Columbia University Medical Center in New York, regarding the results of the study:

“We showed that at the end of three months, if mom got better, the children got better.”

So, as I say, if you’re suffering, please seek help. There’s no shame in it. Taking care of yourself benefits you and everyone around you, even your kids.
