The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz

Hagalaz is the half-month rune through 13 November. The intuitive rune is Laguz. From right to left is Hagalaz, then Laguz. The earthly spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), dead things (not pictured), World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon), and Key in the direction of Back/South (golden dwarf), with element Acid (lemon zest), in the season of Winter (tree button).

This week we’re deep into Hagalaz and quickly feeling the pressure of the second aett. The first three runes of this aett are a wintry trio of harshness, focus, and stillness--fun combo! They set us up for how we fare with the remainder of the aett, which means for how well we cope with navigating the affectivity of others. Where we got comfy with the idea of having agency in the first aett, the second one reminds us sharply that our agency isn’t separate from that of others. What we do with ours reverberates out into everyone else with impact, just as the impact of theirs ripples back to us.

From Elder to Ancestor – Repairing the Human-Nature Relationship

They were shoring up humanity’s long-forgotten planetary frithgard that has existed since the dawn of humanity, and maybe before. They showed us our key resource to tend the broken path. They showed us that we can reengage it and that it is our job to do so. And we have to do it now.

The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz

When we take that logic into Hagalaz, the opening rune of the second aett, that truth might sit a bit harder. Hagalaz means hail and all that it signifies: sudden hardship beyond our control, devastating loss, which we may have seen coming but couldn’t stop, either way. This may show up in literal natural disaster, interpersonal interaction, and/or human person vs human-person systems. It’s hard, and Hagalaz is a rune no one wants in their casts.

The Weekly Rune – Wunjo

Wunjo is the half-month rune through 28 October. From right to left is Wunjo, then Uruz reversed. The spirits of place holding space with the runes this week are Death, whispers of the Hunt, dead things, and World Ancestors. Surprise also joins us. Honey Bee is the earthly Helping Spirit walking with us in the direction of Right, with the element of Mycelium, in the season of Spring. Again, we have no Beyond Earth Helping Spirit engagement.
Wunjo is the meeting of beneficial change and opportunity. A little elbow (probably a lot) and the right place at the right time. A nuance of Wunjo that gets lost is it is unusual. It is a wonderfully beneficial outcome in a sea of typically not-so-great outcomes.

The Weekly Rune – Wunjo

Wunjo is the half-month rune through 28 October. Although not pictured, the spirits of place holding space with the runes this week are Death, whispers of the Hunt, dead things, and World Ancestors. I checked in with the directions, elements, and Beyond spirits of place and got a wide open, “You do you,” as in we each need to check in with those beings of our own ecosystem space. I would love to hear who visits, should anyone care to share.

When we cheerlead the ecosystem as it does its thing, we're more intentionally part of it, IT can be bigger. It can be more enlivened with all who participate. In this way, human-persons play a role in seasonal change.

The Weekly Rune – Gebo

Gebo is the half-month rune through 13 October, with Ansuz reversed expressing how we can best work with Gebo. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), and World Ancestor (wooden spoon) in the direction of Austri/East/Right/Ocean (mossy dwarf), with elements Timing (wee hourglass) and Bone (turkey wishbone), in the season of Autumn (tree button).
Gebo is the rune of relationship, which in animistic territory means everything. Gebo is the first place in the traditional arc of the first aett that we are met on our path, really met. We find interdependence. We find belonging, and it reflects itself back to us.

The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Death (plastic skull), whispers of the Hunt (stag button), dead things (paper wasp nest, potter wasp nest, mink skull), and World Ancestors (wee wooden spoon) in the direction of Beyond (Earth orbit marble), with element Acid (lemon zest), in the season of Autumn (tree button).
Hagalaz is the rune of things not going the way we planned and having to keep on keeping on. And one way or another that leaves mark. And the sun still rises.
