The Weekly Rune – Berkana

The Weekly Runecast for 17 March 2024 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell Berkana is the half-month rune through 30 March. The intuitive rune is Hagalaz. The earthly spirit of place anchoring the runes this week is Uninvited Guest (spiraled hag stone), in the direction of Beyond/All Things (world marble), with element Stone (bottle of amber), in the season of Summer (tree button). From right to left are Berkana (carved reindeer tile), then Hagalaz.

Berkana is a rune of tending and being tended. It comes after deep tribulation, the kind that makes us fear for our lives, the greater good kind, the aggrieved sacrifice kind. So, the lead-in from Tiwaz lingers into our experience of Berkana. There is a sort of spa quality to the care this rune bestows, perhaps even medicinal. It also brings a somewhat present-focused state, in that we are solely tending Self in the moment and not projecting ahead for what comes next. I approach this runic space as rehabilitation: we’re not what we used to be, we are not who we are becoming, yet are shifting throughout.

Soul Stories

Soul Stories, Kelley Harrell I’ve always understood worlds I created existed in a layer of being different from that of formed being, yet not full-on Other, and that they are real.

The Weekly Rune – Tiwaz-Berkana

The Weekly Runecast for 10 March 2024 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell Tiwaz is the half-month rune through 14 March, at which point Berkana moves to the fore until 30 March. The intuitive rune is Ansuz reversed. The earthly spirit of place anchoring the runes this week is Human Heart (ceramic heart rattle), in the direction of Above (cloud marble), with element Plant (caloglossa moss, in the season of Summer (tree button). From right to left are Berkana (carved cedar stave) above Tiwaz below, then Ansuz reversed (carved ceramic tile). Metal just wanted to be along for the ride.

Remember that even as we sit with what the runes mean and how we’re in relationship with them in season, the presence of a certain rune doesn’t have to dictate what will happen in its half-month. Rather, it provides a small window of opportunity for us to explore what that rune might teach us about our current circumstances or needs.

With Tiwaz comes sacrifice, thus grief, also memories of power, comradery, and kinship that no longer suit who we are. The most difficult aspects of Tiwaz are those memories of something great, going to battle for to protect what they symbolize, only to realize mid-conflict that another approach must be allowed so that the relationship can become what it needs to for current needs. Ultimately this is the rune of an OG godden, who when confronted with the battle of his life succeeded at his intentions, but only after he dropped his ego and did what was required for his community.
