The Weekly Rune – Thurisaz

Moving into Thurisaz this week shifts us from this formative physical and conscious space into shaping what we do with them. Thurisaz is the rune of quickening, which I talked about in the What in the Wyrd episode of Thurisaz as a rune. It is the point in the traditional Elder Futhark order that we assess the data coming in from physical, mental, and emotional levels, we generate awareness of sacred order, and we respond with urgency. We could even say with lightning speed.
This rune is everything Thor, which means it's the point of our cultivation of righteousness and the capability of responding when that sense of divine order has been disrupted. Whether we commit some offense against it or someone else does, we feel it in our bodies and ontologically. Our whole being knows the infraction has happened, and we're poised to respond. At this point in the Futhark progression, how we respond has everything to do with how well we've come into relationship with Fehu (body/force) and Uruz (unconscious/action).

The Weekly Rune – Uruz

Uruz has us reaching into our wildness, the aspects of us that have never been and can never be domesticated. It sounds like a dangerous invitation on the surface, though through the relics of rituals we have from our northern Ancestors, they understood the need to be in relationship with inner utangardr. While great personal insight came up in this cast, the whole time I was listening to the various pieces and parts, I kept getting the memo that this runecast speaks more to the collective dynamic than to personal ones. In other words, it’s about the overall energy and transitions happening to the planet, which are informing our personal ones.
The thing about Uruz that has always stood out to me is that our wildness follows our tameness in the traditional ordering. Like some kind of reminder. “Don’t be too tame.” Fehu is our assets that must be managed, represented by cattle. They are domesticated. They cannot tend themselves. They require force. Uruz, though, is the aurochs, a wild creature that tends itself. Uruz is action. It may or may not flow accordingly; that’s not up to us. Even for Utharkists who place Uruz first, I feel like the opening tone of the Elder Futhark is that it takes relationship with both our discipline and our chaos to function well in this world. We can’t disregard either. In fact, our capability in navigating both sets the pace for our experience of the rest of the Futhark. And if we haven’t done that sitting with, by the time we get to Thurisaz and Gebo and Eihwaz, and even Tiwaz… Think about it. What does hardship look like without our cunning edge and knowledge? What about partnership? Or the entire log jam of the second aett? Not good, friends. Not good. And if we look at this from a collective vantage point, souling-in-form is getting a sharp upgrade. Even other-than-human forms are getting deep reunification with Beyond. I’ve got mini essays on that.

The Weekly Rune – Uruz

Moving into Uruz this week pushes things into new territory. Well, okay, not new to us, but new for this cycle. With Fehu we begin the cycle with a very grounded, tending of formed beingness, and Uruz ignites that with a little drama.
In fact, Uruz kind of is drama, of the primal variety. If Fehu is making sure we have the Midgard supports in place to soul-in-form, Uruz draws on the unconscious ones. It draws on the muddy, entwined roots that simultaneously anchor us into the ground and Beyond, into All Things. It is where our wild becomes metabolized into neurology, will, agency.
I’ve spent a lot of TWR talking about Uruz as our untamed inner power that the world can’t handle us wielding. I want to take that a little deeper in this cast.
This is the only rune associated with a named other-than-human being--Audumbla. Audumbla is the primordial feminine life force/Jotun/goddess/aurochs who was carried forward largely in oral tradition. She’s barely referenced in Gylfaginning in the Prose Edda, and that’s it. We have Ymir all over the place.
