The Weekly Rune – Fehu

Runes cast on a medium dark wood grain background, with Fehu carved into a cedar stave, Berkana and Gebo carved into polished Baltic amber, a small wooden spoon, a tiny hourglass, a button with a treen in autumn, a piece of plished lapis lazuli, and other Baltic pieces scattered around, with the words Fehu is the half-month rune through 14 July, (carved cedar stave). Berkana is the intuitive rune (Baltic amber), and Gebo indicates Indigeneity’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are World Ancestor (wooden spoon) with element Timing (hourglass), in the direction of Below (lapis lazuli), in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Fehu, Berkana, then Gebo.

I’ve talked about how our modern take on Fehu centers money, though this year’s runecasts with Fehu have totally thrown that aside. Where last week’s cast was flavored with joy and support from many corners, this one is all about humanity and where we stand.

Fehu means wealth, specifically assets that must be tended. It also expresses how we enter into a new cycle--with thoughts of what we have to bring to it, how we cultivate what we have to share, the idea that making sure we all have good Fehu increases everyone’s assets.

The Weekly Rune – Fehu

Fehu is the half-month rune through 14 July, fully in the sign of Cancer (carved porcelain tile). Wunjo is the intuitive rune, and Ingwaz indicates Mountain Jotnar’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Fossilized Belemnite with element Plastic (Little People Dog), in the direction of Beyond (world marble), in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Fehu, Wunjo, then Ingwaz.
The full runecast will be publicly available here, two weeks from publication. You can find it in full on Patreon, now.

Fehu is the time of rune that can be very bracing in terms of figuring out where we stand with it. Beginning this new cycle likely brings up lots of things--as any new cycle does--relief, fatigue, confusion, maybe excitement. Fehu represents assets that we must tend, which of course implies that we have assets to tend. In a modern context, we make assets all about money, which comes with all sorts of baggage that isn’t traditionally part of this rune.

The Weekly Rune – Dagaz – Fehu

Dagaz is the half-month rune through 29 June, at which point Fehu comes to the fore until 14 July. Ansuz is the intuitive rune, and Algiz reversed indicates Recommitment’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are the World Ancestors with element poison, in the direction of Beyond, the season of Autumn. Read right to left is Fehu above, Dagaz below, Ansuz, then Algiz reversed.

In accordance with this runic calendar, we close our time with the Elder Futhark in season. We’ve walked another year through the guidance of the runes, and with that go forward with shared experiences and communal space. I feel closure at this point in the year, partly because of the intensity of June Solstice, and because Dagaz imparts a sense of a change of course. I experience that Dagaz gap between extremes as a moment of calibration, albeit not always in ways that I want to be recalibrated.

The Weekly Rune – Othala-Dagaz

The Weekly Runecast for 11 June 2023 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell Othala remains the half-month rune through 14 June, at which point Dagaz (carved polymer clay tile) moves to the fore until 29 June. Sowilo (Sowilu) is the intuitive rune, and Jera indicates Weather’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Wheel with element Poison, in the direction of Below (lapis lazuli), in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Dagaz, Sowilo, then Jera.

Dagaz is the closing rune of this runic calendar. It represents a year in intentional relationship with the Futhark, a cycle of intentional relationship with Self and ecosystem, and deep faith in the runes as devotional allies in humaning well across season. It also heralds one of the most spectacular stellar events of the year, and brings wisdom for how to navigate it.

The Weekly Rune – Othala

The Weekly Runecast for 4 June 2023 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell For the week of 4 June 2023

Eldering Self

Today marks The Weekly Rune’s 11th birthday! Thank you for your continued support of this runecast and for how you continue to bring the runes forward in a livable way. I so enjoy it with you!

Othala (carved wrought iron tile) is the half-month rune through 14 June. Perthro is the intuitive rune, and Fehu reversed indicates Fear’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Barred Owl with element Air (feathers), in the direction of Above (cloud marble), in the season of Winter (tree button). Read right to left is Othala, Perthro, then Fehu.

This week’s cast brings a chaotic mix of influences over how we feel about ourselves as elders. As if we need more insecurity around that. But it also offers wisdom on how to elder from where we are, not where we want to be or think we should be, which is an abundant stance to take, all things considered.

The Weekly Rune – Ingwaz-Othala

Ingwaz (carved reindeer antler slice) is the half-month rune through 29 May, at which point Othala moves to the fore through 14 June. Perthro is the intuitive rune, and Ehwaz indicates Wrath’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Mink Femur with element Acid, in the direction of West (Vestri), in the season of Autumn (tree button). Read right to left is Othala above, Ingwaz below, Perthro, then Ehwaz.

Moving into Othala early in the week shifts our focus from a very high, and likely exciting place, to one that's a bit more subdued and somber. In my vernacular, Othala is the rune of eldering, and in American settler culture, that's a challenging thing to do. Yet, it's also the greatest demand of our lives.

The Weekly Rune – Ingwaz

Ingwaz (wrought iron tile) is the half-month rune through 29 May. Hagalaz is the intuitive rune, and Ehwaz indicates Wealth’s perspective. The spirits of place anchoring the runes this week are Turkey Wishbone with element Stone, in the direction of Within (innan), in the season of Spring (tree button). Read right to left is Ingwaz, Hagalaz, then Ehwaz.

Our time with Ingwaz this season has been more complicated--as has our time with all of the third aett. The complexity with Ingwaz has been framed by tense astral alignments, to say nothing of the malcontent that laces many of our daily engagements. For a rune that indicates stepping out into a new version of Self, Life, and/or dynamics, it has felt like a confining few moments with Ingwaz. And yet, what a great opportunity to explore how to be true to new Self in a time that is most likely to challenge it.
