There were no screens on the long windows in the old houses on Third Street, and mostly no curtains either, but only wavy panes of old glass, or new thinner glass where any wavy panes had been cracked or broken. They entered my office as if they owned the place. Who did they think they were, anyway? Expanding my practice to counseling idiots had seemed a logical step, but as my first clients took a seat on the couch I now realized it meant actual contact with the annoying. Unless . . . unless I ran the sessions from a chat room. It made sense. I'm the kind of guy who develops an immediate hatred of people whose voices I find even mildly abrasive. In a chat room I wouldn't hear what they sounded like....
