#PoweredByIndie - An Indie Author's Harvest of Pride

An Indie Author's Harvest of Pride
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
(From “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost)
Though the path to publication is well-trodden by Indie authors nowadays, it was virtually uncharted territory in 2007 when I first decided to diverge from mainstream publishing for launching my first Contemporary Women’s Fiction novel. Nine years later, I’ve stayed the course for launching my new release.
An Indie Author, I take full responsibility for marketing and promoting my work on a daily basis. Though grueling and time-consuming, I’ve reaped a bountiful harvest of fruit from a labor of love.
I beam with pride whenever I sign a paperback destined for a reader who has taken a leap of faith, enticed by the cover I designed and the blurb I’ve composed to represent my story.
That has made all the difference!

The BLOG Tour de Force
To tour or not to tour? That is my question as I pursue lucrative marketing strategies to pimp my book.
If anyone has already undertaken a virtual venture, I cordially invite you to relate your experiences to illuminate the path for kindred Indie authors, myself included.
Lost in a blog fog of ignorance as to how this social marketing strategy actually benefits an Indie author from all the buzz generated by a promotional venue, I navigated the nebulous haze to find out as much as I could.
Push came to shove for me to get serious about scheduling a virtual blog tour immediately following the release of my Contemporary Women’s Fiction novel, AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE (Sept. 20, 2016):
myBook.to/AnEQuiche
Why? Because, a Mel Brooks “high anxiety” set in after I sent out 26 press releases to local newspapers representing communities in my native state of Rhode Island, the smallest state in area, but the second most densely populated of the fifty US states. My resource for procuring a list comprised of newspaper titles, editors, email addresses, telephone numbers, and street addresses was obtained from:
EasyMediaList.com
Not a single response to set up an interview with one of their own! While I will allow a few more days to pass and follow up with phone calls to each editor, it is not my style to pout, sulk, and lament—but to take the bull by the horns!
So, I’m packing my Media Kit with author necessities conducive for a successful tour: book cover photo, author photo, bio, blurb, excerpt, book trailer, book buy links, giveaway promo, etc.
Let the blog tour de force begin!
I’ve got my sights on two so far:
THE BOOK ENTHUSIAST - Author Services Menu:
http://www.bookenthusiastpromotions.c...
*My preference based on pricing and reputation: #1 Best Promotion Service at Preditors & Editors Poll 3 Years in a Row – PUMP UP YOUR BOOKS
Author Services Menu:
http://www.pumpupyourbook.com/author-...
I’m contemplating the One Month Book Blast which I’d like to schedule for November. As the holidays loom in our horizon, it’s high time to deck the blog tour halls with books. Fa la la la la la la la la!

Setting up Shop
Finally! Both the Paperback and Kindle Edition formats for my Contemporary Women’s Fiction novel, AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE, have merged on my Amazon Book Page. Here is the “universal link” I alluded to in my Author Toolbox:
myBook.to/AnEQuiche
Remember, you can create one universal link for your book that works for all Amazon stores. If you sign in to Booklinker and click “Manage Links,” you can see how many times your link has been clicked and where:
http://www.booklinker.net/
As soon as I discovered the “merge” it behooved me to set up shop on social media in preparation for my book launch.
First, I cyber traipsed to my home base, Authors Den, where I updated my bio and uploaded all pertinent details of my novel to accommodate the Kindle Edition, as well as making it available for purchase at the Signed Bookstore at a much lower price than it retails on Amazon:
http://tinyurl.com/jkmqhpa
Next, I changed my Facebook Author Cover to better reflect a shift in the wind. Pivoting from the motif of a vintage manual typewriter, I proceeded to incorporate adding text to photo, courtesy of:
http://picfont.com/
While there, I installed my Freebooksy Facebook Marketing App for Authors:
https://www.freebooksy.com/freebooksy...
I’m so glad I did! Why?
*The one-click READ MY BOOK button allows potential readers to purchase your book from Amazon or any other site you choose.
*The “Join Mailing List” feature encourages fans to sign up for your mailing list so you can communicate with them directly.
*You are able to provide a free chapter or excerpt from your book.
*The Share functional helps spread the word about you and your book to prospective readers on Facebook.
Then I set up shop at Goodreads by submitting the ASIN for the Kindle Edition to join the Paperback.
https://www.facebook.com/author.evapa...
Setting up shop was not a straightforward path to successful installation by any means. At this juncture, the video feature on Facebook isn’t working for me, despite several frustrating attempts to upload my official book trailer.
As with most projects we get ourselves into, Murphy’s Law applies at every turn. I’ve got under-eye circles with enough baggage to rival a Louis Vuitton suitcase!

My Author Toolbox
Eva’s Byte #73: My Author Toolbox
What I don’t know about Internet marketing could fill a book! And, I’ve no doubt those much savvier than I have loads of gadget wizardry tucked under their tool belts to create an effective post on social media. But, I acquired my post etiquette the hard way, justifying that necessity is the mother of invention.
Necessity, an accessory after the fact, upon submitting the manuscript of my second Contemporary Women’s Fiction novel, AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE, for publication on March 31st. Having taken an 8-yr. hiatus from social media, last May I pitched my tent by establishing an Author Page in the vast wilderness of Facebook as preparation for my book launch in a matter of days when everything is in place. Emily Post would be proud of my posting etiquette!
Early on, I made the wise decision to order a copy of INTERNET MARKETING by ALEX ABAZ, a former business executive and entrepreneur who worked with the best people in building the latest technology and creating direct marketing campaigns. From her expertise I learned that when creating engaging posts you should focus on REACH, RESONANCE, and RELEVANCY.
Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/hypdzwy
Content aside, I’m reaching inside my Author Toolbox to share FREE tools of the trade I use for posting etiquette:
#HASHTAGS – Tags with the pound sign in front make it easier for users to identify theme or content. I generally like to place my hashtags above post content, and usually incorporate no more than three.
TINY URL – Turns a much longer URL into a shorter one. Mrs. L, my junior high, Home Ec teacher would have called long URLs “lazy women’s threads.” I keep this link accessible on my tool bar.
http://tinyurl.com/ or https://bitly.com/
UNIVERSAL LINK - I have availed myself of this handy tool through where you can create one universal link for your book that works for all Amazon stores. If you sign in to Booklinker and click “Manage Links,” you can see how many times your link has been clicked and where:
http://www.booklinker.net/
3-D BOOK COVER - http://www.adazing.com/
TEXT ON PHOTO - http://picfont.com/
AUTHORGRAPH – When available at Amazon, I will register my e-book on this website which makes it possible for authors to sign e-books for their readers.
http://www.authorgraph.com/
In order to perform any job effectively, you need the right tools at hand.

Ain't Querying a Pitch!
Ding-dong, the pitch ain’t dead! Which old pitch?
The query pitch.
Ding-dong, the query pitch ain’t dead!
Progressing along the publishing process timeline, I am days away from announcing the release of my upcoming Contemporary Women’s Fiction novel, 'An Enlightening Quiche.' Having received a shipment of Advance Reading Copies, I’m ready to launch a massive campaign querying potential book reviewers through the medium of tailor-made letters pitching my novel.
Armed with a list of 100 book reviewers who have posted their reviews on Amazon for books similar to mine in theme, I’m hoping my pitch will hit the mark:
Dear ______________,
I have read your review for TITLE OF BOOK by AUTHOR. Since my upcoming novel, AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE is similar because (REASONS), I am optimistic you would enjoy reading it.
At this juncture in the publishing process timeline, it would be a pleasure to send you either an Advance Reading Copy or the final digital PDF file, should you be interested.
Sincerely,
Eva Pasco
Ding-dong, the merry-o! Sing it high, sing it low.
Let me know the query pitch ain’t dead!

Hook, Line, or Stinker?
After I submitted my manuscript for my upcoming Contemporary Women’s Fiction novel, ‘An Enlightening Quiche,’ to an indie publisher on March 31st, it behooved me to emerge from the woodwork of oblivion by picking up the slack in the wake of my absence on social media for 8-plus years. Vis-à-vis Facebook, on May 1st of this year, I created Eva Pasco’s Author Fan Page for the purpose of marketing and promoting a book whose release loomed down the road by a stretch of four months.
Then, the dawn of realization hit. What do I do in the meantime?
Besides slowly accruing “likes” little by little and hook or by crook for the potential to increase traffic to my Page, I face the daunting task of engaging the public at the risk of turning people off, boring them, or instigating animosity in the process of posting a hook, line, or the dreaded stinker.
What’s an author to do?
Statistical benchmark data referencing how often one should post content cites:
“As the amount of content coming from Pages has increased, so has the competition to appear on consumers' News Feeds. In other words, Facebook posts coming from Pages are becoming less and less visible in that competitive News Feed. The result? A decline in organic reach that leads to fewer clicks per post.
The biggest takeaway here is this: Don't overwhelm your customers with content on Facebook, and be selective about what you're publishing.” http://tinyurl.com/zylnfja
While there are numerous abandoned Author Pages and others which have not seen activity for days, weeks, and even months, I’m a firm believer in posting daily.
Taking into consideration suggestions for book and author-related posts that I’d come across on the Web, I’ve plied my own ingenuity and truthfulness in crafting my dailies:
Enlightening Elements from ‘An Enlightening Quiche’ – total: 30
Behind the Scene Notes – total: 24
Author Notes – 29 and going strong
I’ll shift gears when my book release is imminent, and develop another train of thought for the subject of future posts: Giveaways, Excerpts, sharing events, incorporating author interviews.
Though my Author Page shows signs of life through likes and shares, I’d like to see more consistent post engagement.
With an eye towards the future, whatever happens or doesn’t happen stays on Facebook—hook, line, or stinker!

WRITE of Way
On August 22nd I submitted the final eProof file for my upcoming novel, AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE. In effect, this was the green light for me to proceed past the crossroad at Proofing and Publication by asserting my WRITE of Way.
The Logistics
Giving it the gas and peeling rubber along the last stretch of a nearly 9-yr. journey:
Any day now, I can expect to receive a high-resolution jpeg photo of my front book cover which I intend to convert into a 3-D representation to incorporate in an official book trailer.
Within a week, I’ll receive the final proof of my completed and approved book to examine.
During this same timeframe I’m expecting 35 ARC’s to arrive at my door. Hopefully, the stock pile will dwindle for each unit to serve a higher purpose in my attempt to line up several book reviewers during the pre-release phase.
My first book order for 99 copies will take 1.5 weeks to print and 1.5 weeks to ship.
My book will be posted to distributors’ websites within 7 – 10 business days.
In 4 weeks, the print book will be converted to an eBook which will be posted to distributors’ sites within 7-10 days.
When I feel everything is in order and pertinent links are forthcoming, I’ll set up shop at my Facebook Page and my Authors Den web page where I’ll be able to offer signed/personalized copies at a greatly reduced price in comparison to suggested retail for a 562-page book.
May each Indie Author find his/her WRITE of Way along the easement of publication as a means for advancing past logistics and accruing sales statistics.

My Last WRITES
Ave mundi spes Maria, ave mitis, ave pia, ave plena gratia--the reverberating Latin lyrics from a Gregorian chant accompany my adieu as I conduct the third and last read-through of the final eProof for my upcoming Women’s Fiction novel, ,An Enlightening Quiche.'
A perfectionist who has never claimed holier-than-thou status, “My Last WRITES” is a euphemistic blog title at this stage of production. Meaning, any picayune peccadillo pertaining to punctuation or hyphenation will remain intact posthumously for all eternity. Even though I’ve unearthed a case scenario for a comma being neither here nor there, I will not hold up publication for two weeks just because I’d feel better if the correction team removed a comma after “plaid” in this sentence:
I placed all of my eggs in one basket, ultimately basing my decision on an opinion rendered by the man clad in a plaid, flannel shirt.
Anticipating the final send-off, and a waiting period of approximately four weeks for eBook and Print conversions, I’ll soon send out an open invitation on social media asking for a few volunteers to read the PDF file and write a review ready for posting at Amazon on the date of my book release.
Meantime, in support of kindred indie authors, I’m reading and reviewing books written by those I’ve befriended or interact with in my groups at Facebook. Likewise, I’m hitting the “like” button, commenting, and even better—sharing posts on my wall to celebrate a cover reveal, new release, author interview, book review, giveaway, or other milestone event.
To all other indie authors immersed in the proofing process, may you minister the last WRITES through pragmatic editing short of overkill.

My Morning WRIT-ual
Awaiting the final proof of my second Women’s Fiction novel-in-progress to approve, you might think I’m earnestly drafting the third, considering it took me 9-plus years to get AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE underway. On the contrary, it’s not how I roll. For the next year, at the very least, my primary focus will entail that of tirelessly marketing and promoting my upcoming novel through various venues, and trying my darndest to interest a filmmaker in adapting it into an indie production. During this interim, I will continue to further along my Memoirs, Blogs, and the occasional essay relevant to my native state of Rhode Island.
Pre-publication, I’ve established a daily morning WRIT-ual strictly adhered to for “the importance of being earnest,” barring unforeseen emergencies or priorities demanding immediate attention.
4:00 or 4:30 – 6:00A.M. – Rise and shine! Switch on the computer and allow it to boot while I scoop out the litter tray. Primed for me to navigate the Internet, I then begin my WRIT-ualistic morning Tour of Duty:
First – Authors Den. I check my click stats pertaining to my latest posts—in particular, my blogs. To my delight, they usually accrue more than 200 hits by the end of the week when I’m ready to post the next one. While at the Den, I update my bio on a daily basis by mentioning a literary pursuit. Then, I peruse the latest “Stories” and “Articles,” select one or two that strike my fancy to read, and leave a comment.
Second – It’s on to my Facebook Author Page where I update my status as it relates to my upcoming novel. Then, it’s onward to my Personal Page where I share that same update and upload a related post which incorporates a previously published memoir, essay, or blog.
Third – Interact at my groups, peruse and schmooze the Home Page, share author posts.
Fourth – Make a brief Goodreads appearance where I edit my bio by updating it with my status for the day. Next, I’ll check the topic threads at my groups which may or may not prompt me to investigate and/or leave a comment.
Fifth – Answer personal emails from the previous day.
Sixth – Check email notifications connected with Facebook Posts I’ve interacted with.
6:00 – 6:30 A.M. – It’s time to exercise. Rolling out the mat, I’ll manage abdominal crunches, a few Pilate’s moves to tone the core, weight lifting, and a run on an elliptical trainer.
By 7:00 – 7:15 A.M., I’m ready for whatever lies in store. During the course of the day, I’ll carve time to write my “shorts” and prep my daily Facebook Posts. This constitutes an endeavor of much thought in crafting them because my sole purpose is to engage, and eventually entice potential readers into purchasing my book when it is available.
Here is a previously published post uploaded to my Facebook Personal Page on July 23rd:
In conjunction with today’s Behind-the-Scene Note for my upcoming Women’s Fiction novel where I disclose my bartending research, step inside the local dive which inspired the bar in AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE via one of my previously published Blogs, “Raising the Bar” (Excerpt – Ch. 14, included): http://tinyurl.com/htxdeoz

My WRITE Instinct
Itsy bitsy teenie weenie like a skimpy yellow polka dot bikini!
A writer with the proclivity to parlay 562words into my upcoming Women’s Fiction novel, AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE, I’ve put my shoe on the other foot when it comes to marketing and promoting. Let me invoke the KISS method – Keep it Skimpy, Stupid!
According to “Attention Span Statistics”- http://www.statisticbrain.com/attenti...
The average attention span is 8.25 seconds.
The percentage of words read on an average 593-word web page is 28%
Point of Fact: I put much thought into creating engaging daily posts for my Facebook Author Page. Checking Insights for 08/02, my post had a 306-reach with only 13 post clicks and 23 reactions.
By and large, no one gives a rat’s patootie!
Hopefully, potential readers will be more responsive when my novel is published and I’m able to conduct a Book Launch Giveaway Event. When I actually begin the process of promoting at pertinent sites, I’ll practice the KISS method. And, you can be sure my official book trailer will be scantily clad of words.
Citing the 8.25-second rule in exercising my penchant for brutal honesty:
I rarely read stories or articles posted at Authors Den exhibiting words crammed together without paragraphing due to a formatting issue. I am not keen on scrolling through literature with miles and miles of words. Therefore, I will never post Chapter 1 of AN ENLIGHTENING QUICHE in its 17-page entirety. Nor do I expect to post it in segments either. If what I’ve alluded to thus far hasn’t interested anyone by now, so be it.
While I highly respect kindred authors in my social circles at Facebook, I shy away from watching any author interview videos I’ve noticed are twenty minutes or more in length, no matter how revealing. On the other hand, I enjoy perusing question & answer interviews because one can ingest them in under five minutes.
Yet, I won’t pander to anyone’s attention deficit by churning trending “shorts” in the guise of novels. I intend to follow my WRITE instinct when acquainting the public with my upcoming release because most people, like myself, don’t care to drown in a sea of words.
