Interview with Gail Z. Martin, SELLSWORD'S OATH

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?Sellsword’s Oath is the second book in the Assassins of Landria series. It follows the adventures of Joel “Ridge” Breckenridge and Garrett “Rett” Kennard, who are the two best King’s Shadows—elite assassins who protect the king and kingdom. Ridge and Rett are unconventional, they’re a headache to their boss, they suck at being stealthy, but they are fiercely loyal to the king and to their friends, and they will risk everything to protect the kingdom—even if doing so lands them on the ‘most wanted’ list!

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?Yes. I’ve had books/series published by one of the Top 5 New York houses and a large London publishing house, as well as mid-sized presses and small presses. I have a fiction and a non-fiction agent.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?We have three series currently with Falstaff Books, and all of our audiobooks to date have come out from Records Books/Tantor. Plus quite a few books in my backlist are still for sale from their original publishers. Having said that, we now self-publish most of our newest books (my husband is in the business full time with me) because it provides the most flexibility.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?We had gotten comfortable with the basics of book publishing, and we had friends who had been doing self-publishing successfully for a long time who were willing to help us and answer questions. I like the flexibility to bring out as many books in a year as I want to produce, to write what I want to write, to switch between genres, and to work with a stable editorial team.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
Working with the cover artists is fun for me, because I can provide input but they turn that input into something that is just right. We work with different cover artists who create in a variety of media and who are located all over the world. So we’re very involved!

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?Since I write a lot of books in a year, I need to be efficient, so outlining is essential! I can’t spare the time to have to make major re-writes or paint myself into a corner.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?Yes. The books go through a round with beta readers (readers who see the manuscript before the final edits to help catch plot holes and continuity issues) and then it goes to a professional editor who has been working in the genre for a long time. Good editing is essential!

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?Making friends with other authors to share knowledge, trade tips, ask questions and help each other promote is essential. I’ve also learned that technology changes constantly, so you’ve always got to be adapting. I’ve also learned to trust my passion, because if I really want to write something in a new sub-genre, I need to take the risk and give it a whirl.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale? Many of the books are available in bookstores, nearly all can be ordered by a bookstore for in-store pick-up, and they’re also mostly available in Nook, Kobo, iBooks and on audiobook.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?Never give up. Everything takes longer than you think it will, but if you learn about the business of writing, learn the craft, and keep at it, you will succeed.

BLURB:
Buddy flick epic fantasy! The second in the Assassins of Landria series from the award-winning, bestselling author of Scourge: A Novel of Darkhurst and The Chronicles Of The Necromancer books!

Wandering mystic Yefim Makary, known to his followers as the ‘Witch Lord’, disappeared before he could be accused of inciting dissent against King Kristoph. His supporters among the disenchanted aristocrats who weren’t arrested have fled or died by their own hand. The king is happy to put the matter behind him. Yet Burke, the commander of the elite King’s Shadows, doesn’t believe the threat is over, and he assigns his two most troublesome, rule-breaking—and successful—assassins to ferret out the real threat and put a stop to Makary’s plots.

Joel “Ridge” Breckinridge and Garrett “Rett” Kennard rose through the ranks of the Landrian army together, from teenaged conscripts to seasoned fighters. Together, they became the most feared team of assassins in Landria, surviving longer that most in their profession by virtue of excellent fighting skills, legendary bravado, peerless strategy, and an uncanny synchronicity.

As the threads of a new plot come together revealing disloyalty among the priests and generals, Ridge and Rett once again find themselves on the run, hoping they and their allies can figure out the Witch Lord’s latest scheme before it costs them their lives—and the king his throne.

#Excerpt: THE CRYSTAL WAR by Tracy Auebach

The Crystal War
Tracy Auerbach
(Fragments #2)
Published by: Parliament House
Publication date: April 14th 2020
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy
The line between human and monster is not as clear cut as they once thought.
In the weeks since her escape from the hell of the Eastern Fortress, things have grown more complicated for Kai. She cast her lot with her brother’s self-absorbed boyfriend, who controls the Western Army, but she’s been separated from Finn, the soldier who found a place in her heart.
Finn has defaulted to his signature move: he’s run away; afraid of himself, his new feelings for Kai, and all the terrible truths he’s learned.
Tessa is free in the world for the first time, a force to be reckoned with. She’s gone to the far west and the Dome of Artifacts to seek revenge on the system that ruined her life.
The type ‘A’ soldier who was once a friendly boy named Charlie has been restored to factory settings, a weapon for Aric to use.
The Science Council has unleashed new crystal compounds, more toxic and destructive than anything the world has seen. As Kai and her friends struggle with everything that’s been done to them, they will have to find a way to unite and prepare for the fight of their lives.

CHAPTER ONE:Bill’s boots gouged through the sand as he was dragged from the vehicle that had stolen him from the safety of his camp; the hands gripping his biceps were huge and rough. A black scarf had been wrapped over his head, covering his eyes, and a gag stuffed in his mouth.
The toes of his leather boots bumped up then down as the sand’s softness was replaced by cement underfoot. The footsteps of those who dragged him echoed and it registered; he’d been taken indoors.
Hands repositioned themselves on his arms as he was slammed backward onto a cold metal table. Struggling, he tried to yell, but no sound got past the gag. Restraints, large and cold, closed over his wrists and ankles. He bucked and kicked before feather-gentle fingers touched his temples, a sensation vastly different from the rough grip that had previously held him.
The scarf over his eyes was lifted away to reveal slender fingers. He blinked in the harsh light, waiting for his blurry vision to focus. When it did, his heart sunk, and he froze. Struggling had been futile. The woman above him was the rumored head of the New Resistance.
Bill stared into the strange, amber eyes of the woman he had heard about. Over the past few months, whispers had traveled throughout the west; rumors of her beauty and cruelty, and above all, her power: his small army of Resistance fighters had been preparing for her imminent attack.
Everything he had heard about her magnificence was true; golden eyes that sat in a perfectly structured face; tan and well-defined, but not too sharp to be feminine. White-blonde hair stood in spikes over her arched brows. Gunmetal-gray hoops in her ears reflected the light of a small crystal fragment set into a dome lamp over the table. She was dressed head to toe in utilitarian black tactical clothing, but he could still tell that her body was a work of art. He couldn’t guess her height; she seemed tall, with beautifully defined curves and a tiny waist.
“Stop staring, prisoner,” she whispered in a melodic voice. “Looking upon me can’t save you.”
Bill was in a lab, but he couldn’t see much. The halo of light from the single crystal above was dim and focused, but beyond the table he where he lay, details quickly melted into shadows. He could barely make out the hulking shapes of the men who had dragged him from his guard post; only the beautiful, terrible woman was clear. He tried to speak, but his lips fought uselessly against the fabric still in his mouth.
“Do you wish to say something?” asked the woman.
He nodded, and she removed the binding from between his dry lips—he licked them before speaking. “I’ve heard of you,” said Bill, awed. “These past couple of months, everything’s changed.”
“It has. I am changing things. And this is just the beginning.”
“Are you going to make me into one of your slaves?”
“I must have your absolute loyalty. I’ll accept nothing less.”
Bill swallowed, feeling ill with the certainty that he wasn’t going to get out of this, and he saw her smile, as if she knew exactly what he was thinking.
“Why me?”
“Why not?” She blinked momentarily releasing him from the power behind her eyes. “You’re a good soldier; I’ve done my research. You’re exactly what I’m looking for right now. You will come and work for me, just as they have.” She made a sweeping gesture toward the men around them.
“Forgive me, Miss…”
“Raven.”
“Forgive me, Miss Raven, but what makes you think you can you ensure my loyalty?”
“It’s just Raven,” she corrected, her expression unchanging. “And the answer is simple. It’s all about consumption.”
“Consumption?”
“Yes. Everyone is a consumer. Press the right button, and anyone’s loyalty can be controlled. Even yours, soldier.”
“My name is…”
“Not important,” she cut him off.
Bill sighed. He’d had more than enough of being controlled; given over from his foster home to the Eastern Forces, trained to mine for crystals, months of being a type ‘B’ soldier on blue compound, only to be stolen in a raid by the Resistance, and retrained as a guard, led to believe that he was at last working for a higher cause. And now this.
Raven gestured to the soldiers standing in shadow, and Bill craned his neck to try and see what was happening, only to close his eyes, feeling his stomach drop when one of the men approached, holding up a faintly glowing blue syringe.
So, more of the same, then.
“What’s his poison?” asked the man with the syringe.
“Primarily stimulants,” instructed Raven. “Food as a secondary, pre-established reinforcer.”
The man leaned closer, and Bill saw by the light of the glowing crystal fragment that he was young, with a healing but grisly-looking scab that ran the length of his left cheek, ending near his eye.
Bill jerked in his restraints, even though he knew it was futile, and gritted his teeth as the needle pierced the skin of his upper arm. The fire of the compound made its way through his blood, causing him to sigh in relief. It still felt good, every time, even after being off it for months now. It had only taken him a few weeks back at the Eastern Fortress to become addicted to the compound itself, and months for the Resistance to detox him.
Heart racing, his stimulant craving spiked. He refused to beg until the Raven girl held a small vial of pungent-smelling coffee under his nose—then he screamed with want. The compound created an itch that the right thing could scratch, and it felt so good.
“Would you like this?” she asked in a silky, taunting voice.
“Yes,” he whimpered.
“Open up, then.”
Bill opened his mouth, sick with anticipation of the bitter cordial that would bring relief to his burning blood. Every pump of his heart demanded it. He greedily swallowed the wetness on his tongue, but it didn’t taste like coffee.
He opened his eyes and saw that the Raven girl held a vial that was empty but for a glowing residue.
She’s given me Shine.
Bill stared at his tormentor. It was too late to spit out the horribly addictive drug. Gulping with a heedless greed he usually reserved for coffee, he’d swallowed a good mouthful of it.
Too much. She had him.
Knowing that Shine would quickly supersede his moral compass, he tried to hold onto his terror, his ideals; he tried to retain any part of himself. But as he looked into her expressionless eyes, he began to feel the drug taking hold. Soon, the fear faded, along with all thoughts of fleeing. The world shrunk, leaving room for her alone in his mind. His senses sharpened, overwhelmed by the power of her presence and the Shine’s euphoria.
The rest of the world faded away, and nothing else mattered but his new queen.
I will serve this woman forever.

Interview with Alexandrea Weis, THE SECRET BROKERS

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
The Secret Brokers is the first book in The Secret Brokers Series. It sets the stage for the adventures of Dallas August, owner of a company that has spies for hire gathering secrets that can be sold to the highest bidder. He didn’t want to own the company, but the responsibility was thrust on him after his previous adventures covered in another book trilogy, The Nicci Beauvoir Series. Dallas is a broken man, physically and emotionally. This is the story about how he heals himself and devotes himself to his company.
Do you have a favorite character? Dallas August. I love his dark side, and his attempt to make himself a better person. He is an intriguing blend of angst, sexiness, and warmth. I developed him in the previous Nicci Beauvoir Series in the book Recovery, and I could never let him go. He flourished in that series and The Secret Brokers is the result of wanting to take him in a new direction.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all? Cleveland was a minor character in Sacrifice, the final book in the Nicci Beauvoir Series, but I loved writing him so much, I brought him back to be a regular character in The Secret Brokers Series. He is a handful and filled with all the zest found in the residents of New Orleans. He is a true New Orleans character.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
Yes, and eventually it worked, but only after I established myself as an indie author. The Secret Brokers is published by Vesuvian Books.
What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
Chemistry, and their ability to listen to you as an author-something that is true in all business relationships. You need to find someone who makes you comfortable and allow you to write what you feel. If someone tries to put you in a box and only write what they feel is lucrative, find another agent or publisher.
Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both? I have several books under contract with my publisher, Vesuvian Books, and I am also working on other ventures in the film industry.
What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence? I don’t have a process, but I do not listen to music. I just sit and write. There is no routine, no set minimum of words I give myself. When I am writing a book, it is usually eight to ten hours a day I spend at my computer.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you? I sometimes outline when working with a partner. Other times I go with my muse, but usually I have an idea where the story will go.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book? Marketing is always a struggle, fortunately I have a fantastic publisher who handles a lot of that. Still, it is an effort to market, and not an exact science as many authors will tell you.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions? I am a wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, so when I am not writing, I am working with orphaned and injured wildlife. Helping animals is my other passion.
What’s next for you? My next novel comes out in October and is a Christmas love story with a spooky ghost tale woven in. The Christmas Tree will hit in late October and be a cozy and creepy holiday read.

Interview with Susan Golden, ALL THAT'S HIDDEN

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
All That’s Hidden is the second book in my Sugar Shack series. The first book, Catnapped, introduces Jennifer and Ryan. All That’s Hidden picks up their romantic journey and throws some challenges at their bond. Catnapped was the fairy tale romance. All That’s Hidden reflects the realities of life. Jennifer is just starting up a doggy daycare expansion of her pet-sitting service. Strange things begin to happen even before she’s opened. And they eventually throw her into a world of international intrigue.

As her business-life becomes chaotic, her personal life experiences an upheaval that threatens her marriage and tests her trust in Ryan. It’s about secrets, hiding, looking beneath the surface, and trust. Serious issues, for sure, but there’s lots of fun, wit, and romance all served up with a side of nearly absurd. Life is never dull around Jennifer.
Do you have a favorite character? That’s like asking a mother if she has a favorite child. I love them all. They are all unique and special in their own way. If I had to pick, I’d say Sugar, Jennifer’s sulphur-crested cockatoo. He’s the bird I longed for all my life, but never had. In some ways, he’s just a TV-watching, cardboard-shredding, regular bird. Like all cockatoos, he’s clever, a quick learner and a startling mimic. But he has this uncanny ability to fit what he’s saying at any given time to the situation. And he knows things. He’s like a feathery Yoda sitting quietly until he says the unexpected. He’s fun and funny and quite frankly, just a bit freaky.
Did you ever have a minor character evolve into a major one. Did that change the direction of the novel at all? For these first two novels, not really. A few grew more important than I had thought they would be originally. But for novel three in this series, “Flippin’ Out”, John Evans, the security official for Ryan’s company, hijacked a good portion of story. Did it change the direction? Well, in this series, I didn’t plan much, I just went where it took me and the characters all told me who they were and what they wanted to do. It’s an astonishing thing how that happens. As a psychologist, I know it’s all in my head, but the way things in the beginning fit into events at the end, how they offer up solutions to situations you hadn’t contemplated, never ceases to amaze me. It’s astounding what the mind works on in the background.
Do you outline your story or just go where the muse takes you?Catnapped and All That’s Hidden were my first two novels. I’ve conveyed factual information all my life for work, but I’ve never had a creative writing class. I had no idea really what I was doing, so, as I said, I didn’t plan. I got stalled on Flippin’ Out and wrote another novel before I went back to finish. I did make a plan when I sent back to it but I wouldn’t call it an outline. In my head, I had a skeleton of what I needed to finish. This writing journey has been a learning experience. You can solicit advice on how to proceed, but you need to find your own path. I plan more now, but I would say the muse goes where I want in the end, she just decides how we get there. I’m just along for the ride.
Did you hire an editor for your manuscript before publishing?Yes. I think they are absolutely essential to putting out a quality piece of work. Because no one is stopping you from self-publishing should not be an excuse to have less than professional standards. Resources not withstanding, if you have the means to pay for professional editing, then I firmly believe you should do so. It’s not just about the quality of the work. My editor has helped me grow in my writing as well. Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
What advice would you give to a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena? It’s fun to have control. It’s satisfying to know no one is going to tell you no. Those are the positives. But you are alone. There is a great deal that you will be required to take on by yourself if you want success that has nothing to do with the quality of your writing.  You need a good story, of course. Nothing is going to take the place of that. But there is so much more and most of that is both time-consuming and not particularly fun. Write because you love it and have a story to tell. Spend time in the beginning researching and planning for how to go about those “other” things.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?I love to cook. I learned to sew when I was in junior high and have sewed on and off for my whole life. Recently, I’ve discovered machine embroidery and I have to say, I’m hooked.  I do volunteer work for several organizations and I am a critique partner of sorts for several people. I’m retired now and time is a resource I didn’t have in the past. I’ve unfortunately got a fairly long list of things I’d like to try doing. The cat inside me is easily distracted by bright and shiny objects.
Some fun facts about you – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or tea? Talk or text? Day or night? Animals of every stripe, chocolate, coffee, do not text me.Day or night – depends. What are we doing? (Yes, my books do have some steam.)  Fun fact: I would much prefer to laugh than cry. I look at the world as a slightly absurd place. Amplifying the ridiculousness around me keeps me sane.
What’s next for you?As I mentioned, I’ve written a number of novels after All That’s Hidden. I presently have a historical romance (Regency) that is in the querying stage with traditional publishers. So, I’m in something of a holding pattern regarding releasing those other novels that are completed. I do plan on putting out “Flippin’ Out”, perhaps as a self-publication by year’s end. And I’m currently writing another historical romance (1700s). Then we’ll see where the muse takes me. As I said, I’m not really a planner. Not knowing is a lot more fun. <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Arial; panose-1:2 11 6 4 2 2 2 2 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} @font-face {font-family:Calibri; panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin-top:0in; margin-right:0in; margin-bottom:8.0pt; margin-left:0in; line-height:107%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;}</style><br /><div style="margin: 0 auto 15px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://xpressobooktours.com/" target="_blank"><img alt="" src="https://www.xpressobooktours.com/wp-c..." style="height: auto; max-width: 100%;" /></a></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> </span></span><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>All That’s Hidden</b><br /><b>Susan Golden</b><br />(Sugar Shack, #2)<br />Publication date: August 12th 2019<br />Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance</span></span><br /><blockquote><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>All That’s Hidden is a delightful story with intrigue, humor, and of course, romance. EXCERPT:My mother came out with two shot glasses and a bottle of bourbon. She poured some liquor in each glass and put one in front of me on the coffee table. She downed hers before taking a seat on the couch next to me.
My stomach curled at the thought of mixing bourbon with my upset stomach.
“For some strange reason, Grams wants me to go to Italy. She said you had a secret to share, something that could explain why.”
My mother fidgeted silently, hands in her lap. I braced myself.
“Tom Rudack is not your father.”
I stared at the boring beige rug under my feet. I didn’t know what I expected her to say, but it wasn’t that.
I wrangled my bottom lip between my teeth and winced from the bruising I’d given it earlier.
“Stop biting your lip,” she said.
“Are you saying the man you were married to is not Ray’s and my father?” I raised my eyes to her face.
Chin lifted with an air of defiance I didn’t quite understand, she watched me, her brown eyes partially hidden behind long bangs, unnaturally dark for her age.
“He’s Ray’s father. Not yours.”
I let out a noisy breath and shook my head. “Then who… who is my father?”
“He’s a man from the garden center where I used to work. An Italian who came here on a work visa. He worked a year and went back to Italy.”
My real father was Italian?

#Excerpt: SCARS & SINS by Melanie Munton

Scars & Sins
Melanie Munton
(Brooklyn Brothers, #2)
Publication date: March 31st 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
We are the Rossetti’s.
The exiled “sixth” family of the New York mafia. We’re the good guys.
People don’t fear us…much. They respect us.

The five of us? We’re the Brooklyn Brothers.
And we protect what’s ours.
You know when you have a little sister and she has that one friend that always follows you around like a puppy? For me, that was Roxanna “Roxy” D’Angelo. That was years ago, back when our fathers didn’t hate each other. Then they became enemies and she went off to boarding school in Connecticut.
Now, she’s back…and looking nothing like the shy girl I remember.
Cavorting with anyone from the five families is strictly forbidden to someone like me. So, I can’t figure out why I keep finding myself in situations with Roxy that could bring the force of the entire mafia syndicate down on our heads. Even if those situations are the wildest, most intoxicating experiences of my life.
But with the Sicilians in town and out for blood, times have never been more dangerous. If they find out about our relationship, they won’t hesitate to remove both of us from the equation so they can restore order.
We’re not Romeo and Juliet. They both died. And I refuse to let anything happen to Roxy. I have to protect her. From my family. From hers.
I hope she won’t hate me for what I have to do.
Because it might just kill her before any bullet can.

EXCERPT:Roxy
“How’s Gia?”
His eyes softened. “She’s good, other than being annoyed all the time. She’ll be a senior at NYU. Pre-law and she hates it.”
She and I had been best friends for our entire childhoods. Inseparable up until one disastrous night five years ago. That was why I’d been around Ace so much over the years. Any time she and I had hung out, I’d always begged to come over to her place. My house had never held much appeal because after all, Ace wasn’t in it. And knowing Gia as well as I did—or used to—she would have definitely hated going pre-law.
God, I missed her.
“I’m sorry to hear that. Um,”—I bit my lower lip— “can you tell her I said hi?”
His expression turned to that of an adoring older brother. “Of course.”
And that was why my crush had never gone further than a crush.
I was just another little sister to him.
Gia and I were the same age, three years younger than Ace. He had basically lumped me into the same category as her years ago: annoying younger sister. Trailing after him, hanging onto his every word, I had made a giant fool of myself. Even worse, I knew his four older brothers had teased him to no end about it. If Ace had ever been protective of me, it was always in an angry, brotherly way, not in a jealous, possessive type of way. Which was what I’d always secretly longed for.
Because I’d never—not once—thought of him as my older brother.
Not for one second.
“Maybe you guys could hang out sometime,” he added. “She’d love to see you.”
My heart ached.
There had been a gaping hole there ever since I lost her years ago to the rising tension between our families. Our fathers had once been good friends, then they had a falling out, and any connection between the D’Angelos and the Rossettis had been obliterated in an instant.
“I think you and I both know that’s not possible.” My voice was resigned. “Nothing has changed.”
To my astonishment, his eyes flared as they slowly raked down my body.
Okay, I’m definitely not imagining that heat.
Was he really looking at me like that? Like he did in my pathetic, hopeless dreams? But where was it coming from?
“Oh, I don’t know,” he rasped, his gaze once again landing on my mouth. “I’d say some things have definitely changed.”
Whaaaaaaaat actually is happening here?
His words knocked the air right out of my lungs.
The level of bafflement on my face was surely making me look like an idiot, but nothing could have been done about it.
He took a meaningful step toward me. “Have you been a bad girl, Roxy?”
I’d been staring at his mouth, the way the corner of it twitched with a hint of a grin, but my eyes flew up to his at those words.
Because they dripped with innuendo.
Since when did Ace speak to me with innuendo? Did he suddenly forget who he was talking to?
Embarrassingly, I felt my cheeks heat. He probably thought I was an inexperienced, naïve child at seeing how easily I could still blush.
But I was only one of those things, thank you very much.
My voice unintentionally came out as a whisper. “Excuse me?”
His eyes briefly flitted to the confessional booth. Then that grin came back. “What kind of sins does a girl like you need to confess?”
There was one thing about Ace that had always stood out for me above so many others.
That inquisitive expression of his I mentioned earlier was one that could swiftly turn very intense. Particularly when he was looking at a girl he was interested in. His eyes would go molten, his jaw would harden, his lips would tighten, and when his chin dipped almost imperceptibly lower, he really meant business. And by business, I meant he was turned on. It was like his signature look that he always gave pretty girls.
For years, I’d desperately hoped Ace would one day look at me like that.
That I would make his jaw clench, make his mouth firm. That I could cause the kind of visceral reaction in him that made his hands fist with the uncontrollable urge to grab me and haul me to him. I wanted his need to kiss me to light a fire in him so hot he’d do anything to relieve the burn.
I’d seen him look at so many other girls just like that, and it had broken my heart each and every time. I’d fallen asleep countless nights, praying that I would eventually be the recipient of his heated inspection.
And for the first time in my life…Ace was looking at me.
Just.
Like.
That.

#Excerpt: DOG TOWN by Debbie L Richardson

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Debbie L. Richardson will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Harry loves to race around the streets of Dog Town. When he stumbles upon the lost city of cats, he finds himself in a race against Dog Town’s fastest canine, Grizzly.

The winner of this race will have the power to save Cat World, or destroy it.

Harry wants to win, but there is one small problem. The race is in the ocean, and Harry is terribly afraid of water.

Can Harry overcome his fear of the water and save Cat Town?

Excerpt:

Harry spied the bell of the clock tower over the treetops. He heard the bell strike the first of twelve chimes.

“First place, here I come,” he whooped with delight.

“First to the finish line has to take a bath,” Fleabag shouted, right on his tail.

“Stop changing the rules, Fleabag,” he barked.

“At least we can tolerate a bath,” Junior cried out, though from further away.

Junior was talking about Harry’s phobia – called ablutophobia, a fear of water. Harry suffered terribly from it. He was even afraid to get too close to his water bowl in case it tipped over. And he never bathed. His brown coat could very well have been white underneath the dirt for all anyone knew.

He could see no point in bathing anyway, because he often rolled in something filthy afterwards.

Even now, the thought of water made Harry look up at the sky. Above was a wide expanse of blue without a cloud in sight. Just the way he liked it.

Sneaking a look behind him, he saw Junior trailing behind in third place. Junior’s attention was more on the traffic than on the race. But Fleabag, who was in second place, was gaining on him. She was competitive, probably more competitive than Harry, yet something other than competitiveness propelled Harry forward. Harry was the champion racer, and he’d been the champion racer for two years. He wasn’t about to quit and give up the title.
